Strøget in Aarhus, Denmark.
Strøget is a pedestrian, car free shopping area in Copenhagen, Denmark. This popular tourist attraction in the centre of town is one of the longest pedestrian shopping streets in Europe at 1.1 km. Located at the centre of the old city of Copenhagen, it has long been one of the most high-profile streets in the city.

Why The Philippines is a Car-Centric Country
Navigating around the country poses a challenge for Filipinos, especially for commuters, with long queues for mass transportation and heavy traffic. Walking usually isn’t an option either, due to poor pedestrian infrastructure like uneven pavements and unfriendly “pedestrian lanes”. When will the Philippine government steer away from a car-centric approach, and prioritize commuter or people-centric transportation systems? When will we be able to reach a destination without having the need to ride a vehicle?
Problems With Commuting
The country feels like it’s designed for vehicles, specifically for private car owners. Commuting costs a lot while still experiencing long queues and uncomfortable rides. The country’s one of the primary modes of transport, the LRT system, has plenty of issues Filipinos must withstand; long queues, jam packed trains, and dysfunctional air-conditioning units. Despite being a convenient mode for mass transportation, the LRT is only accessible in the NCR.
Challenges as a Pedestrian
Walking as a mode of transportation isn’t friendly for Filipinos. There just isn’t enough good infrastructure and green spaces for people to walk in, for a tropical country with a lot of commuters, that is disheartening. Sidewalks are often difficult to navigate, with uneven pavements or constricted pathways.
Crosswalks don’t give enough time for people to cross; it’s common to see 20- or 10-second time frames given for people to cross the road, while vehicles have around 2 minutes to pass by. The difference between the time to pass through greatly favors vehicles over pedestrians.
Even with the short time allotted for pedestrians, they usually have to share the road for vehicles passing through an intersection. Some drivers, especially motorists are aggressive towards pedestrians, that they often feel the need to rush and compete with vehicles, when that’s the only time frame they are allowed to cross and supposed to feel safe navigating.
PUV to Private Cars Ratio
Due to problems commuters face, many Filipinos resort to private vehicles. Perhaps as a symbol of status or for convenience, the Filipinos’ need to resort to private vehicles is partly the problem. Some link the traffic problems to the population. To some extent, it is correct, but I believe the problem lies in the ratio between private vehicles to public transport. I often observe in expressways that the traffic is caused by the volume of cars, mainly consisting of private vehicles carrying a single or few passengers. In comparison to trains and other PUVs, these consume less space whilst carrying more people. If we prioritized public transportation, road traffic will be lessened, and the country will be much more efficient.
Why the Government Should Steer from a Car-centric Society?
If we did have sustainable and good modes of public transportation, private car owners would consider utilizing the public transportation rather than sitting at the comfort of their cars. However, the government should ensure that it is free from the hassles mentioned above, it should be beneficial for everyone.
The government should also leave behind the idea of infrastructures solely for cars. Constructing more expressways, wider roads, and skyways won’t solve the country’s traffic issues. With the growing population and demand for private vehicles for convenience, the country will run out of space to build roads long before being able to provide enough space for all the cars accommodating a single person, inefficient compared to investing in a good public transportation system.
I believe that promoting pedestrian and commuter-friendly spaces develops a country economically and environmentally. Fewer cars means fewer carbon emissions, and mass-walking spaces will promote commerce and enterprise.
A good example of a pedestrian-only space is the Stroget pedestrian street, which is a car-free shopping street in Europe, which originally consisted of interconnected roads.
Wrong Priorities for Transportation
While there are upcoming projects that will alleviate the country’s transportation crisis such as the MRT-7, along with other train routes, the government had the wrong idea of improving the transportation system. Instead of increasing the number of trains, and providing a space for PUVs only, they went for the construction of infrastructure catered to private vehicle owners, leaving pedestrians and commuters behind.
I believe that politicians don’t know the problems of the country’s transport crisis, and just provide band-aid solutions because they sit in the comfort of their private vehicles and will work in an air-conditioned space. One cannot effectively change what they do not understand.

Day 7 - Jan 7 - Copenhagen
I slept goooood. Finally. I got like 9 hours of sleep!!
Omg I did so so much today. In totality, I went to 2 castles (Rosenberg and Amalienborg), 4 museums (Design Museum of Denmark, Natural History Museum, SMK national art gallery, and the Guinness World Records Museums lmao), 2 sights (The Round Tower and Church of our Savior - quick peak from outside), and a bouldering gym!! I am so tired but I feel goooood
I also only spent like $12 on food, and really $7 bc $5 of it is technically gummies that I might keep for souvenir lmao. I ate my bread from yesterday for breakfast and then the pizza for lunch. I had this amaaazing grocery store sandwich from Netto for dinner. It was like a Mediterranean chicken sandwich. I liked.
Anyways, I woke up around 8, walked to ø12 coffee, which I thought was a coffee shop cafe but it was more of a sit down restaurant cafe, so I had to awkwardly order coffee to go. I grabbed my espresso and started walking through Stroget to get to Rosenberg Castle for my reso at 10am. It took about an hour to go through and it was pretty cool! Then I tried to go to the Botanical Garden across the street, but it’s going through construction and I could not for the life of me find the entrance. So I just started heading to the Amalienborg castle. I got there in time to see people lining up and crowding to watch the changing of the guard ceremony. Because it’s winter and the Royal family stays at this castle during the winter, the ceremony includes the guards band! It was pretty cool to see them do everything while we’re standing in the rain.
After they stopped doing cool stuff I went to the museum and quickly walked through it. It wasn’t AS cool but it was coo. Since the design museum is so close, I quickly walked over there and zooooooomed through that museum. It wasn’t that interesting - some parts were cool but some parts were like uh.. most of it felt like IKEA. But less cool…
Then I went to the Natural History Museum which I was SO excited for bc I LOVE dinosaurs.
There were no dinosaurs. The exhibit bad structure of the museum was so confusing and I ended up getting turned around many times. The Neanderthal exhibit replaced the dinosaur one and that made me really sad. That exhibit was lame. However, the photography exhibit was suuuper cool and got me emotional.
Then I crossed the street to go to SMK, which was poppping offf - lots of foreigners. It was a grand ol art gallery with a special Matisse exhibit. I don’t like old European art. I went through it very fast bc it was really lame. There was this “installation” exhibit that I walked into and the first one I saw was a bunch of mannequins that had been torn or destroyed around the private parts or other parts of the body and I remember thinking “wtf is this exhibition about rape?” I read the plaque - indeed it was about rape. Makes you think about whether or not people should make art.
Anyways, it was dark by the time I was ready to leave - I bought a postcard of the red studio
I realized the round tower and Guinness world record museum were open til 6pm so I went to those
Round tower was coo but I see why people go in the day - the view is great but it gotta be clear and daylight lol
Guinness world record museum was definitely meant as a gag thing for children - it was a little lame but there were some interesting facts I didn’t know - it was a light museum to digest. And it was included so why not? I only spent like 30 mins there before it closed
After that, I pulled the trigger to go to Christiania even though it was dark and late- I figured there was a restaurant I wanted to go to so I could go eat first and rest up, get energy, and power through Christiania to get to Bloc & Walls.
I was wrong. The restaurant didn’t freaking let me in!! It was half empty and they were like sorry we are fully booked and can’t seat you. I was like 🤔🖕🏼
So I started walking back to the central streets to find more food options, I couldn’t find anything so I just started walking to the art town and pusher street.
I was crossing the street to the entrance of Christiania, I was behind this other guy who was jaywalking and I was like 5 feet behind me. A man who had just left Christiania started yelling “NOO YOU CANT CROSS!!” And pushed the other man in front of me back to the other side of the street!!! I was like wtf so I walked faster. This group of men walked past me and I heard one say “you are a lucky young lady” in like a scolding way.. I think I did something wrong?? I looked it up at the gym but I think jaywalking is illegal but idk what the rules are in that commune!!
Anyways after that I was super spooked and just powered through that area. Pusher street is so sketch hahaha it’s like a red light district but for WEED of all things. There weren’t a lot of women so I just stayed next to couples, luckily there were still a lot of tourists. But there were times where I was like holy fuck it’s so dark what the fuck am I doing holy duck holy fuck
I finally got back to a main road and started looking for food bc AGAIN i was so so hungry and I looked at the map and I was so far away from the gym so I decided to just take the bus. I walked a little further and right next to my next bus stop was a Netto grocery store, so I bought a sandwich and some gummies and hopped on the bus
The Copenhagen card covers transit but idk how it works, every time I showed the driver, they just waved me away 🤷🏻♀️ fine by me I guess
I scarfed down my sandwich once I got to my stop as I walked to the gym
The gym was quite nice, a little pricey - it was $27 for pass and shoes ( I really should’ve said I was a student idk why I do this ) but the routes were fun and I got to do some abs
Around 9:15pm I was like I should probably get going, so I proceed to prep to go back out into the cold. The bus was super easy and quick back - I saw a lady bring her cocker spaniel in a tote bag on the bus
Then I walked to 7-11 to get some bandaids bc I noticed I had blisters on my big toes and get another snack - they have so many incredible snacks! The candy selection is next level and the chocolates are mind blowing. I think I need to try some.
Once I got back, I showered really quick, did laundry, and ate my snack/read my book while I waited. It’s now almost midnight and I’m still waiting on my clothes to dry 😩

Vintage Copenhagen Denmark The Little Mermaid Silver Pendant - Hans Christian Andersen Danish Fairy Tale Statue
Terrific silver pendant of Copenhagen’s most famous attraction, the statue of The Little Mermaid. This beautiful pendant pays tribute to the most iconic statue in Denmark which depicts the fairy tale by Hans Christian Andersen of a mermaid who gives up everything to be united with a handsome prince on land. This wonderful pendant is a fun symbol of Danish history, has a slight, undisturbed, natural patina and will be a conversation starter on your favorite necklace!

Day 6 - Jan 6 - Copenhagen
Again, I couldn’t really sleep. I was tired and tried to go to bed around 10:30/11pm but woke up at 12:25am and then again at 2:45am, 4:00am, and 5:15am.. I tossed and turned in between those times. Another guy checked into our room around like 2:30am so that woke me up too.
Finally I just gave in and scrolled my phone around 5:30am until my alarm went off at 6am. I think all of us were checking out or going somewhere so we were all up.
I dropped off my key card and walked a brisk 5 mins to the Arlanda Express station. I drank my orange, carrot, and ginger smoothie and settled into the 20 min train ride.
Got to the airport and security wasn’t bad but they made me squeeze liquids and lotions and makeup into this one ziplock bag. Ugh it was so arbitrary!!! Like mascara?? That’s not a liquid!!
The flight was quick - only a little over an hour and I sat aisle with no one in the middle seat. I slept the whole way.
We landed and it was instantly rainy and cold. People are so quick to get off planes here.. it’s interesting
I learned today that flying into Denmark from any European country doesn’t require a customs check, so we just walked right out. It was odd. I bought my ticket to the city and I had no idea if I did it right but the ticket lady on the train said it was fine! I really didn’t know until we got it Copenhagen central station
I put the rain cover on my bag and started trudging over. It sucked. Rain sucks. I much prefer snow.
I couldn’t check in yet so I put my stuff in a locker and proceeded to head out. I made it across the street before I realized it would be impossible to walk in that rain without getting drenched and uncomfortable so I walked back and looked up the metro route
It was only one stop so it was pretty easy. I got lost trying to find the market hut eventually did, got some porridge and ready my book.
I wanted to keep exploring so I went to go look for an umbrella. I found this cute IKEA mini like store that sold umbrellas so I got one. As soon as I stepped outside, it stopped raining for the day 😀
The city was sooo beautiful when the sun came out. I walked by stroget and to Christianborg palace and to Nyvgard for the colorful houses. It was ALL SO BEAUTIFUL!! Then I went to Fredericks Church which was just a church so I said hi to Jesus Christo jk he’s not real and left
Walked to Kaskellet, this Royal garden thing, saw the sun set which was gorgeous and took a pic of the mermaid thing
It was getting dark but I walked to Meyers Bageri got this chocolate filled croissant cinnamon roll lol nibbled and then continued to Det Rene Bakery which I didn’t get anything from but it was voted one of the best bakeries
From there, I walked to Baest and had to kill some time bc it didn’t open til 5pm, but I walked around some shops and then sat for the last 10 mins in front of the restaurant
This place was highly recommended and I normally don’t love pizza but this place was sooo worth it. I was a walk in and they sat me at the bar, I ordered a glass of glogg - this winter holiday drink consisting of wine, red vermouth, nuts and spices. It was STRONG lol I took my Pepcid (probably not early enough) and I was red. I also ordered the #1 pizza which was just tomato sauce, olive oil, basil, and baest moz(?). It smelled SOOO good and the ingredients were so fresh, it was incredible. I understand why there’s a wait and it was voted best pizza in Denmark. And #4 best in Europe outside of Italy!!
I ate and read my book, and took the leftovers home. I walked home and showered. I was pooped. I rested for a bit and then was gonna go read downstairs but I called Eric and then decided to go to the gym.
This guy let me in and then I learned that you have to pay 20DKK to use the gym for 2 hours. So I went to pay and came back and did a quick workout. It was honestly pretty nice!
I planned for tomorrow and then went to sleep.
