Painting on utility box in the alley behind the now closed Army & Navy Department Stores Ltd., Whyte Avenue. I have included a photo from Google Maps that shows the artwork before the store closed. (10411 82 Avenue NW, Edmonton, Alberta, Canada). • Across the street and slightly east along Whyte Avenue is one of my favourite buildings from the area “The Dominion Hotel Building” • from a Heritage plaque posted outside: “On October 2, 1903 two hundred guests sat down to a banquet at the new Dominion Hotel to the music of Clarke’s Orchestra. They dined on the very finest foods of the season. No drinks or cigars were served. The Management didn’t want to chance any disorder in this new hotel. “ • It was designated a registered Historic site on 14 July 1976 by the Hon. Horst A. Schmid - Minster of Culture • Source: plaque on site - erected by the Province of Alberta. The Dominion Hotel was built in 1903 by Robert McKernan, whose son, John W. McKernan, built the architecturally unique Princess Theatre across the street in 1914. At the time of the Hotel's construction, it was the most ornate of the buildings on Whyte Avenue. The architecture consisted of a relatively simple rectangular three-storey brick structure. The façade, however, consisted of elaborately decorated wooden balconies topped by an ornate central cupola giving the structure a distinctive Victorian Appearance. The building originally functioned as a hotel with the ground floor containing the lobby, dining facilities and a beer parlour. The Dominion was converted to apartments in 1916, when Prohibition devastated the Hotel business in Alberta. The Acme Meat Market opened at the location in 1921. The ground floor has been occupied by a variety of retail outlets. The building was almost entirely reconstructed in the early 1980s. Further restoration was done in 2018.
