The Demon King Chapters 12-15

Chapter Twelve:

Admittedly, I've had chapter 12 bookmarked since i started reading. this was the point that changed everything. when i was in eight grade, telling myself, i'll read this last chapter and then go to bed-- but then ended up reading the rest of the book just in case raisa and han ended up meeting again lol i was so pissed when i had to wait two days to read the Exiled Queen.

Raisa is so funny, especially with the Amon thing! like, 'you want to tell your friends that i'm your sister, i'm going to kiss you in front of your friends!' She's so unhinged in the first book, i love it.

First meeting of the Grey Wolves, but it does make me wonder what's so wrong with the other two or three people in Amon's triple that he didn't ask them along to help 😭

This chapter was also the first time the infamous 'trader face' was named.

First off, it's actually 8 now. Second off, she's so thirsty, even now, and i love that for her.

Raisa and Han's first meeting is what we in the business refer to as a 'meet ugly' and it's perfect <3

Also, I always wonder what Averill is thinking in this scene? Like, yeah, his daughter getting kidnapped is bad, his daughter getting kidnapped by a former streetlord and accused murderer is WORSE, but he also has to have recognized the cuffs, and the last name Alister, right? Like, how is he not freaking out that his daughter is being taken by Waterlow's heir 😭

We are still talking about a pat down, right?

They just GET each other 😭

Chapter Thirteen:

Han getting jealous of Raisa's hypothetical marriage after knowing her for an hour, he is so unserious 😭

They're so cute! They were exactly what the other wanted AND needed (just maybe not at the exact right time)

Chapter Fourteen:

Raisa having to learn that being born into the line doesn't make a ruler, but she wants what is best for her people, and that is what separates her from Marianna <3

Just in case you thought that Raisa was in any way more serious than Han, btw

Raisa trying to send Han away, knowing he can't help her, and he's just regretting all of his life choices bc he's so worried for her but can't follow 😭

All right so I’ve finished reading King of Fools by Amanda Foody, and as far as I’m aware, this is a relatively small fandom so idk if anyone will even see this, but:  I need to scream about this book and I don’t want to spoil it for anyone, so!!  My long, incoherent, and very spoilery thoughts are below the line!

JAC NOOOO!!  I’m so upset, Jac was an amazing and really intricate character and now...gone.  The stupid fucking omerta.  Yes, I knew that logically, an important character would have to die over the course of this series.  But I did not want it to be him  :(

On that note, I had been seriously concerned that he would get back on Lullaby over the course of this book.  So I’m at least happy that it didn’t end up happening, but Charles Torren was awful and deserved what he got

In spite of all the other amazing characters, Enne continues to be my favorite.  She just has so much depth to her, and she’s come so far from first arriving in New Reynes.  She is definitely a Sinner now and I love it.  The literal first thing she does at that meeting is threaten Jonas - Jonas!  Scavenger!  The Scar Lord! - and you HAVE to respect that

Sophia is such an interesting character and I love reading about her.  Can’t wait for her POV in Queen of Volts!

JONAS MACCABEES what the fuck.  This character.  He is the most confusing person ever written about.  Okay maybe not, but you get my point.  One moment he’s saving Jac’s life, the next moment he’s being a really frustrating person, then the next he’s being hilariously relatable, and then he’s betraying everyone and then being really noble and then disappearing and then WTF JONAS

The Jonas and Harrison thing.  I.  What.

“There are cats everywhere named after murderers”  I love this

Throughout the entire book, I kept thinking to myself, “What the fuck is going on with Bryce Balfour?”  And it took until the end of the book (and reading the online prologue to Queen of Volts) but now that I know what the fuck is going on with Bryce Balfour, he is an even creepier and more chilling character than before

Also now at least I know why Rebecca was acting like that

Levi’s relationship with Narinder was very interesting and fun to read about but I’m glad it’s over - and yeah, for Levi’s sake, but much more so for Narinder’s.  The poor guy, honestly.  He had no bad intentions or ambitions:  he just wanted to run his club and keep himself and his sister safe, and suddenly he has gangs overflowing in the Catacombs and Tock keeps risking herself and blowing shit up all the time.  Don’t get me wrong, I love Levi, but he does make mistakes and Narinder was completely right in saying that he was doing all the listening/giving and Levi was doing all the talking/taking.  Narinder literally just wanted to run the Catacombs and be left alone

Lola had better get her job as a librarian at the end of this.  Lola Sanguick deserves the world

The Spirits are all so cool, and having Enne as a streetlord makes them ten times better.  It’s just...so refreshing to see so many characters who embrace femininity without being ashamed of it, you know?  (And that scene where Enne is watching over Roy, her hostage, with a gun while reading a tabloid magazine with an article about the gang and she gives her own wanted poster a kiss?  Perfection)

I absolutely adore the friendship between Lola and Jac.  They are amazing and the support they have for each other is so awesome to see!!  They’ll bicker and tease each other, but when it comes down to it, they have each other’s backs and they’re the ones that the other goes to when they really need it.  It’s great.  Plus she calls him Polka Dots because of that one cravat that he didn’t even buy, which is hilarious

Grace’s existence.  She’s an assassin and a financial expert who just hangs around reading romance novels and whose sole life purpose is to torment Roy.  What more can I say?

LOLA AND TOCK

Another bullet point for Lola and Tock because they are sooo cute!!  Lola blushing when Tock flirts with her at the party?  Lola acting all flustered when Jac is trying to ask her about the date?  Tock sleeping on the couch with her head resting on Lola’s shoulder?  alskjdflskjfsldkfjslfjslfjsd

This is getting long but idc.  Vianca is such an interesting villain:  a terrible person but a great antagonist.  You can tell exactly why she does the things she does and why she reacts this way, but you still hate her for it because she’s a monster and oh my god

It boggles my mind how Prescott could just...be killed, and the election would still go through.  And people would call it fair.  Like, no shit Harrison got elected.  The opposition is LITERALLY DEAD

Harvey!  He’s done a lot of messed up things, but I honestly feel bad for him, especially after reading the prologue for Queen of Volts.  I’m excited to read more about him

Mansi leaving the Irons and joining the Scarhands...it didn’t affect me as much as I thought it was supposed to?  Idk.  I didn’t exactly expect that she’d swear to Jonas, but as for leaving the Irons, I kind of saw it coming.  It definitely seemed likely, at least

Levi has so much character growth in this book.  It’s amazing.  Between what Narinder tells him and his argument with Jac (and now, Jac’s death), he’s really growing up and learning to prioritize the things that are really important over the things that he simply wants.  Because, as Jac and he both say in this book, he wants everything.  But not really anymore

There is no way that Ivory’s actually gone for good

I get the feeling that there’s more happening with Rebecca than just “she’s sick and Bryce can’t find anything else to cure her.”  Like, clearly that’s the case, but I find it hard to believe that Rebecca (someone who has made it very obvious that she has legitimate feelings for Bryce) would be comfortable with him trying to sell his soul to the Bargainer in exchange for a cure for her

As a final note, this book was AMAZING and there were so many twists and turns and I just....asldkfjslkfjsdfls.  Still bitter about Jac, but I’m so excited for Queen of Fools to come out so I can see what happens!!!

the power of flames

summary: sometimes, han dreams of how exactly his sister and mother died. 

the dreams always starts as something pleasant.

it doesn't derive from that until something clouds over him and han gets the distinct feeling that he isn't going to like what comes next.

and why should he? who would honestly like watching the only family they have left being burned to death knowing it was all their fault?

gavan bayar probably would, but han is pretty certain that maniac doesn't count.

the fire does not hurt him, it never does, but poor mari is still too small for her lungs to serve her much use. especially when she is already sick. mam is sheltering her from the worst of the flames, ripped pieces of her skirt wrapped around the lower half of their faces.

han calls out to them, hands stretched out to touch them, to rip them away from this scene so that they turn out alright. but they are dead and when their eyes turn towards him, he is petrified from the weight of their gazes, from the accusation on the tips of their tongues. he knows it is his fault and they know it too.

it is at this point that he wakes, drenched in sweat and breathing heavily. willo was there for his first nightmare, and she patted his head and made him a drink to help give him fewer dreams, but it hadn't worked. he had let her believe that it did, but willo is no fool and he knows that she knows he lied.

dancer doesn't know, but if the nightmare keeps reoccurring at the rate that it does now, he is sure to find out soon as well.

after the fear bleeds away though, all he feels is anger.

it makes his blood boil and his veins sing. he wants to go out and find bayar, wants to make him pay for all that he is done. he is already understanding why the clans hate jinxflingers so much, but then again, he has always understood why. bayar killed his mother and his sister, two innocent people that had nothing to do with the amulet or even with any business han had going on.

mam was strict and struck him often, she was never cruel to him without reason, but she didn't deserve to die. mari was young and hopeful and wanted him to do better, wanted him to be the best version of himself that he could be and she definitely did not deserve to die.

it is his fault, he knows that it is, and he knows that mari would not want this, but han won't stop until justice has been served. not until gavan bayar has been shown what the consequences of his actions are. no one has dared ever cross the high wizard, but this is han and he has never been afraid of a challenge.

he is han alister, hunts alone of the clans, and cuffs, the former streetlord of ragmarket.

by the time han is through with him, gavan bayar will make sure to always remember his name.

Chapter Seven:

Both Han and Raisa having to deal with "oh, no, my best friend grew up and got hot" is actually hilarious.

And then she does the same with her own son 😖

Something, something, the garden turning into Raisa and Amon's spot to Raisa and Han's spot, something, something

Amon is such a dork, I wish this part of him lasted longer 🤧

I feel so bad for her. All she's ever wanted was a FRIEND 😭 (remembering what happens in that same garden about a year later 🤧)

The Byrnes are so smart, if only people (marianna) listened

Oh, sweetie...

If you follow my blog, you're probably aware that I am NOT a raimon fan. And this is one of the reasons why they didn't work and why they will NEVER work. He'll always view her as his superior in a way, and she'll always be able to pull rank on him, just as he accused her of doing even at Oden's Ford. It's their dynamic, and it's the way of their friendship, but it doesn't make for a healthy romance.

Raisa, go girl, do ur thing 🤭

It's funny that Raisa became much more enjoyable as a character to me the first time around when she was able to make a few of her own choices. She got to taste freedom for the first time, and it helped her grow up.

Chapter Ten:

Okay, so I will admit that when I read Chapter Ten six years ago, I had been starting to get worried that i had misread the point of the story, and raisa and han weren't going to be romantic pair. and i do remember thinking that if raimon was all i was going to get, it would be okay... dear, maker, am i glad that that did not turn out to be the case <3

I wrote a rain fanfic with this exact premise 😭

Another reason raimon doesn't work romantically is Amon's first priority is to the line, not the specific queen. Yes, he cares for raisa, but he won't let that win out on his sense of duty, even back when he was just a corporal.

Chapter Eleven:

Imagine you’re Jonas Maccabees. You get an invitation to two meetings at a nightclub with all the other streetlords in the city, the only stipulations being that you can’t bring weapons or guests. You’re curious, so you go.

Your nemesis is there, showing excessive PDA with the nightclub owner. A new streetlord named Séance is there, and you already know her identity. The Dove Lord is there at the second meeting, and so is the leader of the Orphan Guild and his salesman, because apparently they get to break the rules. (For the first meeting, the Doves’ second had been there instead and the Orphan Guild leader’s girlfriend was there, and you suspect she killed your sister and is impersonating the Dove Lord, so this adds up. The second meeting is more important though.)

Séance suggests a stock market for the gangs and starts threatening the most important, dangerous people in the room to take her seriously. She pulls it off, so she has your respect. Everyone likes the idea except for Ivory—who, again, you think is actually Rebecca and murdered your sister. If this theory is correct, then Bryce is her boyfriend, and yet he goes against what Ivory says (not a smart move in any instance) and pledges to join the stock market.

Ivory is furious, and Harvey starts grinning like an idiot, confirming your theories bc if she was just the leader of the Doves, why would he care? Ivory stands up and walks away, and then Séance (in a real power move) just up and leaves, thanking everyone for their time. The audacity. Your nemesis follows, which, good riddance, he’s a mess.

Leaving you—Jonas Maccabees, Scavenger, the Scar Lord—alone with Bryce Balfour and Harvey Gabbiano, who are filled with simmering resentment and wildly inappropriate happiness, respectively. Two people who are almost certainly colleagues with the woman who murdered your sister. Two people who are absolute disasters and also just fucking ridiculous, and you are now stuck in a meeting room in a nightclub with them because everyone else at this Important Gang Meeting just bailed.

I have no real reason for thinking that Jonas was younger.  Looking back on it, I guess it makes more sense this way, but...I always thought he was, like, Levi’s age.  Maybe Harvey’s age.  Definitely not almost thirty.  For goodness’ sake, he’s closer to Harrison’s age than he is to Levi’s!

Again, I have no real reason for being so surprised by this, I just...???  I guess I just find it funny that Levi is basically Jonas’s nemesis, and Levi is like twelve years younger than Jonas.  That’s almost Mansi’s entire lifespan.  Don’t get me wrong, I love Levi and Jonas has definitely done a lot of fucked up things, but like...no wonder why Jonas hates him so much.  This kid has spent a fair amount of time as the streetlord of the Irons while Jonas is still Eight-Fingers’s second with MUCH more experience than Levi.  And Jonas is the one content to stay the second, because he supports and is loyal to Reymond, while Levi has spent the whole time wanting more and trying to become famous in the city and whining that Jonas’s name was mentioned in the New Reynes guidebook and not Levi’s.  Like, yeah, the part where Levi was reading that book and complaining about it was hilarious, but also no shit Jonas was in the book and he wasn’t.  When the book was published, he was probably, like.  Twelve.
