Promptober Day Six: Kimono

Just a cute little story a bit on the short side. I got the inspiration from Studio Ghibli and My Happy Marriage. Please no reposting or copying! Thank you!

“There’s something different about the season when the blossoms finally open their petals.”

Iris looks up into the soft blue eyes of the wizard as he tucks his hand in pockets, his coat floating about him in the breeze. “Hm?”

Felix reaches his hand up into the sky, grabbing a stray flower and bringing it down to show her. “Each season brings its own type of magic. Spring magic is fresh like rainwater. It’s rejuvenating.” 

“Six months with you and I still haven’t been able to decode your cryptic riddles,” Iris says, waving him off with a small smile. 

Felix brushes his blonde hair back with a laugh. “Really now? I thought you’ve been doing really well on your rune studies.”

“You know what I mean.”

The cherry blossom in his hand flutters slightly as he lifts it up, cupping his hand around it. A small light pink glow forms around it and with a quick flick of his wrist, it transforms, a golden loop snaking off if. He holds the finished creation up for her to see, pinching it between his thumb and forefinger.

“Do you like it?” he asks with a grin, taking her light wrist gently in his other hand as he slips the ring on. 

“Felix, it’s beautiful . . .” she says admiringly. 

“Know that you’re the first woman in the world who has a ring of an everlasting cherry blossom.”

“It won’t die?” 

Felix shakes his head. “No . . . it forever holds the magic of spring youth within it.” His soft blue eyes gaze at her, a slight pounding welling up in his chest. He has to look away from her for a moment . . . from her smile . . . as he lifts one hand to block his hot cheeks, gazing out at the storefronts of the streetblock they were on. His eyes twinkle a bit as he sees a fabric shop across the way, the little crest carved into one of the dark wooden posts causing his lips to quirk up. 

“Is something wrong?” Iris chirps as she notices his sudden withdrawal. 

“No . . . but . . . I’ve just had an idea.” He turns to her, tucking his arm under his. “As I’ve understood it, you’ve been fascinated with the culture of all the places we have visited so far. I would like to buy you a little gift.” 

“But you’ve just given me one,” Iris says, tilting her head. 

“Pah . . . a parlor trick compared to what I have in mind.”

He takes her across the street as the aromas of sizzling pork and salted greens from a nearby street vendor waft through the air. However, that soon changes as he holds open the red door, a blast of crisp air and the scent of clothing instantly cooling Iris’s face as she steps inside.

The magnificent ceiling above them stretches with fabrics of all different patterns and designs, swooping over decoratively like kites. Rolls of material are stuffed snuggly in rows within shelving as other, grander patterns of cloth are displayed on racks.

Light tan with white spider lilies, crimson red with golden cranes swooping over the front, light blue with leafy vines . . . kimonos line the walls beside the fabric displays, each as unique as a snowflake. 

“Oh wow . . .” Iris murmurs as an old woman steps out from a small door behind the counter. She hunches over the desk with a smile that makes her whole face wrinkle sweetly. 

“Hello . . . welcome to Mashizusu Gofuku Store,” she says in a scratchy voice, folding her hands behind her back. “How may we be of service?”

Felix smiles back at the woman. “Good day . . . I wish to ask that you dress the lady before you today.” He stretches his hand out toward Iris, who’s eyes widen in surprise. 

The woman bows a bit toward Iris. “We can of course.”

“However . . .” He holds up one pale finger. “I ask that you do it through the Superudoresshingu method.” 

The woman’s eyes widen a bit, inhaling as Iris furrows her brow. “The what?” she asks but is cut off as Felix puts his finger against her lips.

“So, a Onmyōji, are you?” the woman says, a bit of mischief on her face. 

Felix chuckles daintily. “Yes, I am.”

The woman bows again as she gestures toward the room she came in. “Very good. Right this way.” 

“What is going on?” Iris asks as Felix takes her hand.

“Superudoresshingu, translated as Spell Dressing,” he explains as they walk through an ornate hallway. “Did you notice the crest on the post before we went inside? That was a wizard mark. Certain stores within human society present themselves as just that, however they may have a hidden side to them, providing special services to wizarding folk.” 

“Really? And they have one here?” 

“They have them everywhere, you just have to keep your eyes peeled.” 

“So what is Spell Dressing?” 

Felix squeezes her hand gently. “You’ll have to find out love.” 

They enter into a dimly-lit back area, a curtain covering one half of the room. The woman walks up to Iris, holding out a plain white kimono. 

“Please change in there,” the woman says, pointing toward the curtained off area.

Iris nods and goes behind the curtain, quickly changing into the garment, stepping out a moment later. 

“Now please, stand over there, in front of the window.”

Iris stands as the woman opens it, letting the noise of the street below filter in.

“Now, have you been Spell Dressed before?” the woman asks. Iris shakes her head. 

“Right now, you are wearing a plain white kimono . . . however, when I call upon the power of the spirits, they will decorate you, shaping your cloth with their hands into something that suits you exactly. No two Spell Dressing sessions are the same. It will be unique to you, and you alone.”

Iris gasps in wonder, her brown eyes sparkling as the woman raises her hands and chants something that isn’t in English. A light breeze ripples into the room, and a second later, a cloud of cherry blossoms encircles Iris. Seconds later, they sweep out the window, disappearing as quickly as they came. 

Felix’s eyes once again have to be averted from Iris’s face momentarily as he gains his composure. It’s glowing with awe as she stares down at the kimono. The fabric is now a light pink color, golden flowers trailing down the fabric that seem to shimmer whenever she moves. 

“How do I look?” she asks, spreading her hands out to get the full effect.

“Beautiful,” Felix breaths, unable to repress the wonder in his voice as he stares at her. “Do you like it?” 

She smiles, walking toward him, her cheeks matching the color of the cloth. “Yes. Thank you so much.” 

Felix’s eyes soften as he gazes at her, taking her hand in his, kissing it lightly. “Only the best for you.”

What resolution do you use to browse, roughly?

I'm trying to figure out appropriate pixel dimensions for Chumblhome's "StreetBlock" view. The basic idea is to have 1-2 main columns for full size posts (perhaps 540 pixel width to match tumblr), along with smaller posts (1/3 width images; 2/3 size text) and thumbnails.

Thus, it's possible to browse through a large volume of content quickly, making the experience more pleasant. I'm limiting it to two main columns because that way the user's focus can stay down the centerline.

But what resolutions do you guys typically use to browse Google Plus or other social media? For example, I mainly use:

1024 pixel wide (1024x1280 rotated monitor) 1366 pixel wide (1366x768 laptop) 1600 pixel wide (1600x900 monitor) 720 pixel wide (720x1280 smart phone)

If you don't know the resolution you're using, just an idea of rough size and rotation is good, like:

Laptop (wide) phone (tall or wide) tablet (tall or wide)

If you're using a tablet in "tall" rotation because it works better with single column stream view, would you rather use it in "wide" rotation if there were a two column stream view option?
