Day two of watching Gravity Falls and I still don't get why one of the main things I heard about this show being that Mabel is selfish and annoying. She's just like?? a 12 year old girl???? "Oh she's crazy about boys" tbh there's more episodes so far of Dipper trying to get with Wendy than there's been with Mabel doing anything annoying. Like does something happen later and it makes people only see her as being 100% wholly bad or is it just from her being a little into boys and being silly? Ah well

niche post but the argument people often make about the robins being "out of character" for batman or such because he wouldn't "force them to fight for him" has always been a pet peeve of mine because i feel like it's often underselling and sometimes even ignoring the near-universal characterization of like... any robin. i think that the batman 2004 is a great example of exactly the point that i'm getting to: in that show barbara becomes batgirl entirely of her own volition, at age, like, fourteen, and bruce's response to this is essentially "well i can't reasonably stop you, so i need to keep you with me now so that i can help you if you actually get into trouble". he's not forcing her to do anything! in fact he does actively try to stop her from being a vigilante at first! when he realizes that she's going to do it anyway, his response is to provide her with tools and supervision that allow her to continue doing the same thing more safely and effectively. think about, like, parents who let their teenaged children drink at home in a safe environment, so that they know what alcohol does to them physically and what it feels like before they get blackout at a party and get into legitimate danger. that's what's going on here. to me.
this is obviously My Onion and i'm not trying to imply that anyone has to agree with me on this, but i feel like it undermines the robins' autonomy and personality as characters to boil them all down to "well bruce forced them to fight for him because they're dependent on him". that sucks! it's boring! i'm sure there are legitimate ways to explore that in a complex manner, but frankly i am not interested in them! batman would not do that! there's a very canon explanation for why pretty much every robin would totally do what they do with or without batman's help. dick wanted to kill his parents' killer! jason was getting into street fights! tim ran his bike into a tree to get someone to pay attention to him! needless to say, damien was trained to be an assassin from birth! these kids are freaks! and that's not even mentioning the other batkids. obviously you can do whatever you want forever etc i genuinely do not want to stamp on anyone's creativity, but in my opinion it's way more interesting to take this lore into account rather than make them all Innocent Children Who Batman Is Manipulating.

man i remember when my time at sandrock was still in development and there was some dev update introducing the town doctor character, fang, with his pretty delicate facial features and long shampoo-commercial hair, looking like every cliche of a "cold, reserved anime pretty boy" distilled
and then the update where they said they would make him romanceable/expand his backstory due to popular demand, and i rolled my eyes in utter disinterest at what looked like the same cardboard cutout love interest we've all seen a million times, cuz that is just not my bag, personally
and then i played the game and well fuck, so he's actually disabled due to deep childhood trauma, and you help him through his struggles to a place where it's less debilitating, learn he's extremely, passionately motivated to help others not suffer the way he did, and is in fact kind and awkward and a little bit of a dork
and oh no, whoops, i've tripped and fallen and married him
