A Brighter Future

My therapist told me that I should keep a diary, so I can have proof that I am, in fact, getting better. "It is also a way to address your concerns and elaborate on your feelings, a way to put them out in the world. It will help you get some weight off your chest and prevent you from keeping all of those negative thoughts inside of your head"

I know she's right. I mean, she studied, got a degree in psychology, and she's been doing her job for years.

The problem is, I'm not good at keeping diaries. God knows I tried to do that for years, but I always end up forgetting to write daily, or even regularly, and then the poor, cute notebook full of uneventful days, and swirling emotions that most of the time don't make sense at all, just sits there, in a hidden corner of my library, buried behind school textbooks and antique books I've been collecting for years. 

I love those books. I love the warm, fuzzy feeling that pervades me every time I find a small word, scribbled in the blank spaces at the bottom of the pages. I spend days and nights wondering what that person must have felt like when they were reading that same book I am now holding in my hands.

I found some letters inside of those books, too. Childish, full of poor grammar and emotions too big for a piece of paper to convey them completely. In some way, it reminds me of myself. 

I write in a language that isn't even my own, and I make mistakes (a lot of them, I know). But still... I can't help but feel content and comfortable. It's a language I learned. My own private success and hard work. I'm far from being perfect, but is it really that important? If something makes you feel good, does it really matter if you are not the best at it? 

Struggling with the idea of perfection is not MY battle. I guess it's common ground. Everyone is fighting that same war. 

But why am I so fixated with the concept of perfection and time? Why am I so scared of those unpolished little details? Am I a complete, utter failure? Am I really going somewhere? Or am I just spinning in circles, until I get so sick I can't even get out of bed?

Maybe I need to keep a diary. And it will be full of stupid jokes, and boring days, and the same old feelings. But maybe I will find out how to break out of this cage.

I don't know why I feel the urge to share this. Probably, I just need to share my existence and my internal turmoil with someone else. I mean, someone who is not myself or my therapist. I'll try to keep a diary. I'll try and make it work. And maybe it will help someone to feel a little less alone.
