I genuinely don't know the answer to this. I'm disabled and my life has always revolved around my shows and it's VERY annoying to me that I need to wait for my new show sometimes but at the same i can see it like it could be keeping my anticipation up and making me enjoy it more subconsciously but I really don't know. What do you guys think?

look I LOVE filler episodes; I love to take time and know the characters and the little details about them;that's my favorite form of TV; but I love them when the season is 20ish episodes long and there's time to develop; don't expect me to be happy when you take 2 years to make a season and it's barely 8 episodes long and you waste 4 episode for unnecessary crap that has no impact to the story! just tell me what the hell happened in that 2 years and be done with it!

The Death of Reruns
Tumblr media
Every so often, I come across social media threads from people my age who bemoan the fact that younger people don’t get their — to us — perfectly common pop culture references.
And none of us know anything about current pop music or (to us) niche streaming TV series.
Of course there’s the usual transition between generations and whatnot, but what’s actually happening?
One of the things we’ve lost in the transition to digital TV and streaming is the experience of encountering older programs.
There’s nothing today that’s the equivalent of the 1970s-1990s after-school 3pm-6pm block of syndicated rerun programming that your local affiliate would put on after the network soaps ended and before the 6pm newscast.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Shows that had been off the air for a decade or more were part of our cultural consciousness because TV wasn’t aimed at hyper-specific audiences; it had to appeal to everyone. Re-runs were also a cheap way to fill the schedule.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
We didn’t have cable, streaming was 35-40 years into the future, so linear over-the-air TV was our only choice. We watched whatever was on.
Because of this, we had to understand the context of what we were watching. Hogan’s Heroes was set in a Nazi POW camp; M*A*S*H was in the Korean War. Some shows were set in cities, others in suburbs, others in small towns.
1970s TV became more integrated and diverse thanks in large part to Norman Lear. We saw single moms, African-American professionals, liberated young folks, diverse Brooklyn classrooms, and even how older white working class guys were taking all this change.
Tumblr media
There weren’t any shows, much less entire networks, trying to identify and monetize specific demographics to the degree we have today.
The shift from over-the-air TV with its Big Three networks, independent stations, and PBS, to first the “500-channel universe” of satellite and cable, to today’s dozens of streaming services, has fragmented what we used to think of as “popular culture” into lots of smaller “cultural bubbles.”
Think about this; there are very few streaming / premium cable series that break into the public consciousness or gather the same proportion of audience share that network shows once did.
In 1985, an episode of Family Ties would get a 30 Nielsen share, meaning 30% of all active viewers were watching that show during its timeslot. (It was the number 2 show, and benefitted from having the slot after the top-rated Cosby Show.)
At its peak, that could be 20-30 million viewers, represented about one tenth of the total US population in the late 80s.
Today, streaming is measured directly; they simply count streams from their servers to signed-in users. Presumably, digital cable boxes aggregate viewing data too.
But it’s notable that the current top non-sports broadcast TV show is CBS’ Tracker, which airs on Sunday nights (!!!) with about 10 million viewers. (In the past, that would have been a broadcast dead zone.)
The top show of 2024, with about 19.8 million viewers, was NFL Sunday Night Football, and it’s kind of emblematic of how traditional TV networks have leaned into reality programming, game shows, talk shows, talent shows and sports; “event” broadcasting for broad audiences that can’t be binged in a weekend.
Whereas older broadcast TV shows get reruns to fill the schedule, get syndicated, or get DVD box sets, a lot of streaming series just get yanked from their services and disappear. They won’t become part of the shared cultural vocabulary; just forgotten.
We know, from experience, that having news bubbles leads to fracturing in our common politics. I wonder if the fracturing of shared popular culture doesn’t risk something else - less empathy, less curiosity, less discovery, less dialogue between generations, less sense of community?
Maybe what we need is less choice, and more reruns.

🌟 Exciting News! 🌟
My TV show on Izzy has reached the #1 most-viewed spot — and I couldn’t be happier! 🎉
If you haven’t watched it yet, head over to Izzy and stream it for free by creating a new account.
The show is all about helping you improve your Hebrew by watching Israeli TV shows and movies.
It’s so rewarding to see all the comments, questions, and shared thoughts in the comment section of each episode.
The value I wanted to pour into this show — making Hebrew easier, more fun, motivating, and rewarding — is getting people's 👍 "it's so helpful", so I’m beyond thrilled! 💙
If you’re having any trouble creating a free account, send me a message. Izzy had a tech issue and they’d like to know if anyone still experiences problems.
Thank you for watching, supporting, and growing your Hebrew skills with me ✨

AppleTV+ produces quality content that they give more of a fair shot to than the other streamers. Where they have the best quality and casting in their shows and miniseries', Netflix makes endless amounts of garbage for the masses to try and net anyone to their platform, with Amazon and Hulu not far behind, though slightly more boutique. AppleTV+'s sub fee is comparatively lower, they allow you to share the service with up to five other people, and doesn't have commercials. They should get more credit for consistently-well produced and sourced, quality programing with an actually decent user experience.
i’m actually grateful for apple tv+ who seems to be able to believe in their tv shows despite ‘low’ ratings.
based on wikipedia, they have 76 ongoing shows (drama + comedy):
- 27 of them were ended but 13 of them had at least 2 seasons which brings us to a 18% cancellation rate after their first season
- 18 of them (23%) were miniseries so their end is justified
- 21 of them are renewed but if if you add the 13 series that had at least 2 seasons, this brings us to a total of 35 shows that were renewed which is a 46% ratio renewal rate
apple tv+ renews half of their shows and i think we should be thankful for them in a time where netflix and amazon cancels 90% of their shows
