Inomata’s Design Notes & Memories - Destiny Cast
Some notes:
I’ve linked images of each thing she references below.
Unlike the first batch of Eternia characters I previously posted, these were in Japanese. And unlike the Destiny 2 ones I translated, she talks about her experiences with the characters in the game and not just her design processes!
The book in question is this one.
What I think about most when designing characters is their colors and the components to their look. The characters are displayed as such small sprites, so in order to be able to differentiate them from each other, I give each of them a specific color palette and unique accessories to each of their outfits.
Stahn’s thing was his scarf. I also made sure his shoulder pads, gloves, and boots looked huge.
Rutee is supposed to be a thief, so I made her look a bit like a ninja. I didn’t want her to look too girly, so I gave her shorts and exposed her navel. For colors I went with red and black, since that’s a distinctive palette. Whenever I’d do boss battles, she’d always be joyfully picking 2 gald off the ground instead of healing my very low HP characters (laughs). I thought about removing her from my party to prevent this, but then I’d feel bad, and it just made me think “this is all part of her plot” (laughs).
Philia is a priestess through and through. I went for white and green to give her an earthly feel (laughs). Her glasses and braids were a strong request from Namco. I came up with designs for her, but they didn’t have the glasses or braids, so they were repurposed for the priests in Straylize Temple. It was the basis for Philia’s design as well as Elraine’s in the sequel. Philia has her eye on Stahn, but he eats too much and he oversleeps. I feel like they’d work out better if Philia was more the assertive type herself (laughs).
Woodrow is an archetypical handsome man, so I didn’t have much to stress about when designing him. He’s a king, so I wished he had a stronger atmosphere behind him. I almost never used him when playing the game though (laughs). When you break into Dycroft, I thought, “it’d be really cool in a narrative sense to use him here, but he’s just so weak”. But you get special dialogue if you take him along, so I went “tsk” and brought him anyway. “Just stick to the backlines and don’t die” (laughs).
Leon’s really easy to draw, so again I didn’t have much to stress about when drawing him. He has a princely vibe to him, so I gave him white tights, but everyone was taken back by it! I thought, “is it that weird?” and ended up making them less tight fitting (laughs). He acts a bit snobbish, gets seasick easily and refuses to eat vegetables, so he really crosses off a lot on the “young master” list. He’s also really fun to use in battle (laughs). He has a really low defense stat but he hits fast, so it’s crucial that you string your combos together. When paired with Stahn, if you can isolate your bosses in the far side of the screen, they go down quite fast. Then I see the popup that Rutee’s picking gald off the floor again and I just use healing items on him (laughs).
I wanted to make Chelsea cute and small, so I based her image off of little birds. I gave her a palette of pink, green and blue, and made her hair look like a cockatoo or parrot. Her bloomers look like a paper lantern and I find them quite cute (laughs). Her life story makes me want to cry though. She’s fine and all in the first game, but in the sequel, she’s still wearing those bloomers from when she was a kid, living all alone on a snowy mountain. And if you go through her drawers, you can take something that Woodrow gave to her. I felt so bad, I thought “even though it’s so out of the way, I’ll go buy all the items you need!” (laughs). Then she makes all of these bows for you, but by then, I’d already enhanced my weapons a lot… But I felt so bad that I never Refined them and thought, “I’ll keep these on me forever” (laughs).
Johnny’s original idea was “troubadour,” but as the story progressed and I gave him his hat and all sorts of plumes, he came out a bit comical (laughs). He’s a really fun character to have in your party though, and I fell in love with him right away. I love that his tone-deafness does physical damage to the enemies (laughs).
With the Swordians, they have the will of humans and I wanted to incorporate that into their designs, but it didn’t seem to fit so I went for something more inorganic. Berselius alone has a creepy aura to him, and when Destiny 2 came around I thought “But his owner is such a nice person! Is it really okay for him to have such a creepy design?” but then I thought well, maybe Harold just likes things that way (laughs).

i've finally made it to leon's side of destiny dc and i'm really digging all these extra cutscenes we're getting from his pov...i think it's rly clever how they squeezed in all these extra little interactions with hugo, marian, and chal through moments where he had been apart from the main party. BUT ALSO i just hit that one scene from cherik and it kind of tore my heart out lmao so. i need to ramble.
okay so even before cherik, i think the extra fleshing out of the castle scene was really great. from stahn's side all we ever saw was leon saying he's going to report the situation to the king and request a ship, and then...he soon came back with a ship! his report to the king naturally couldn't have been a pleasant conversation, but it was over and done with so quickly that i didn't think much of it.
and then leon's side showed him trying SO hard to plead his case before the king, his frustration at being dismissed and treated like a child, his momentary happiness and triumph when the king finally agreed...only for it to immediately come crashing as hugo comes in and smugly takes all the credit? god my HEART.
so then we sail off from darilsheid with leon under a shit ton of pressure, beating himself up from what happened in straylize and so so SO determined to succeed. it's under these conditions that they arrive at cherik. and they talk to baruk, who points out that it's "rare for leon to get along with people his age" while stahn happily says it's bc theyre friends, which naturally would've made leon feel put on the spot and defensive. and this was apparent when playing stahn's side, but even then, the way leon verbally lashed out afterwards and said he was "disgusted" seemed especially harsh.
still, it's leon, so i'd always just chalked it up to him being judgemental and disliking stahn's attitude + simply not respecting him during this part of their journey. all of which is true to some extent but then leon's side hits me with this additional scene:
and ofc i'd known that leon struggled to deal with people who wanted to use him for his status, but i had no idea that he suspected STAHN of all people to be doing that as well. but in hindsight, ofc he would think that...all this time, stahn was trying so hard to befriend leon, only for all these genuine gestures to be misinterpreted in the worst way possible. i need to go lie down now.
that said, i love the way this recontextualizes leon's bitterness and extreme resistance to friendship early on. stahn's efforts at friendship wasn't just grating to leon bc he thought it was a waste of time. leon's been burned by people lying and using him before. he thought stahn was doing the same, and it was only when stahn took the hit for him in the temple that he realized that wasn't the case...at which point he did warm up to him! that really was the turning point.
i'm experiencing so many feelings right now and i cant wait to see the confrontation at calviola's temple from leon's perspective soon. he'd ran off by himself for a little while there, so i'm sure there'll be a new scene, and i'm really digging the way they're using his side to explore his character further - tbh i expected it to be a 95% identical retread of act 1, but it is so much more than that! why did i wait this long to actually play tod dc...i love it...
#outofduty#[ not sure how to tag this bc#its not a headcanon if im just rambling over canon#but im experiencing feels and cant keep it to myself. so ]

A gift for straylize on AO3, for the Dimiclaude Gift Exchange
He grins back up at him. "You know I'm the kind of man who can't resist taking his chances when he sees them," he says. "Now come on, Dimitri. you know you always get flustered and don't know what to do in moments like these." That's not wholly true. Dimitri was honestly a pretty quick learner, the scarce few times that they had a moment for themselves where their hands could wander as they pleased. Like a foal whose legs crumpled underneath it upon its first steps into the world, only to need but a day before it took off at a gallop. Dimitri was the same, once... but it's like all that knowledge was wiped away from him, when Claude presses his palms to his breastplate. He doesn't have to so much as budge, in response to those palms. Dimitri does, regardless, confusion wrought across his face and drawing his brow together tightly. Maybe he thinks this is all some sort of dream. Well, that's fine, Claude supposes. If he thinks it's a dream, then maybe he'll go along with it more. Makes it easier for him to sit up in turn, sliding his legs over Dimitri's greaves. It is an action that he promptly regrets, as the hard metal presses up past the poof of his pants and into his skin. Fuck.
In a world where Faerghus rebel forces and Leicester unite, Claude makes a quick visit to Garreg Mach. He comes up with a plan, to help get Dimitri back in functional order. Definitely a very solid plan, that won't lead to fluttery heart feeelings at all.

Ahhh but Leon is finally letting his guard down!!! He's trusting everyone to fight WITH him and being cocky and snarky instead of stiff and defensive hehe

[Royalty/Retainer AU] Traveling painter, Yusuke Kitagawa!
An artist with a love for good aesthetics and good people.
Backstory and vitals under the cut, outlined by @straylize, and any additional information will be shared on the RRAU blog.
Vitals:
DOB: Batele 28, 741
Age: 28
Height: 181cm (5’11”)
Birthplace: Garudyne
Current Residence: Traveller, splitting personal time in Astarte, Garudyne, and Bufula primarily.
Born Yusuke Kashihara in the Kashihara Region capital of Garudyne, Yusuke lived something of an unconventional life compared to most Aristatans.
His mother, Sayuri Kashihara, was to be the future Governness of the region, however, that changed before she could take the seat. She had a frail constitution, but an unwavering spirit, and once she had her mind set to something, it could not easily be changed. This is precisely why went she met a traveling artist and fell in love with him, she knew she had to pursue him at all costs.
That man was Ichiryusai Madarame, and he too had fallen in love with Sayuri. He rarely spoke of where he was native to, having cast his past aside in favor of the group he traveled with. They were known as the Seven Sisters Troupe, a group of traveling entertainers that in centuries past, had been formed by seven sisters. Though the sisters had long since passed, the name remained, and those who wished to entertain all manner of Arisatan people sought to be accepted to that troupe; they were a family in their own right.
It was for this reason, along with Madarame’s never-failing need to remain inspired, that he continued to travel. Sayuri was his greatest muse however, and he found himself returning to Garudyne more and more, until they eventually married. She took an interest in his craft, and upon the announcement of her pregnancy, Madarame gifted her with canvas and oil paints, to allow her to pursue her fledgling interest in his absence.
The Kashiharas did not approve of Sayuri’s choices, and it was her sister, Junko, that often pushed that Sayuri wasn’t fit to lead. However, it wasn’t until Yusuke was born that things truly changed. Sayuri’s health had taken a turn for the worse following his birth; she was far frailer, and upon the death of the Governor, Junko took the seat of Governness. She had little interest in leading herself—she wished more for her son, Jun, to take the title, as she felt he was more suited as the son of two nobles. Sayuri was unable to fight this choice, but made peace with it, delving more into pursuing art and caring for her precious son.
The early parts of Yusuke’s childhood were happy; though Madarame was not often around, Yusuke loved him dearly, and had nothing but good feelings, especially given how Sayuri spoke of him. He picked up on his love of art at a young age, fostered and inspired by how much both of his parents loved the craft. Even as Sayuri grew too frail to much for herself, she encouraged Yusuke. He took inspiration from when she was more well, the self-portrait of herself holding Yusuke serving as a constant source as things grew bleaker.
It was at the age of 8 that Yusuke lost his mother; Sayuri had given in to her illness. The result of this was something catastrophic in its own right. Without Sayuri there, Junko had full control of the House Kashihara, and wanting to rid of the blight that she felt was Madarame’s bloodline, she cast Yusuke and Madarame both from their home. Knowing he had to care for Yusuke, Madarame left his forged family of the Seven Sisters troupe, settling in a small home in Garudyne.
He did all he could to make Yusuke’s life a happy one; he fostered and encouraged his talents. He aided Yusuke in technique for his art, and taught him other valuable crafting skills his had learned in his own travels, such as sculpting and making jewelry. Yusuke took to those skills easily enough, though painting was far and away the thing he loved to do most.
But he did not love art alone, and he did not let the tragedies that had befallen him keep him from living as any normal child in Garudyne. He never acted like that of a noble; he easily made friends with the other children that lived nearby. Lisa Silverman and Eikichi Mishina were two other creative children that lived nearby, serving as the first people outside of his own family that would be muses for his art. They played together often, and were sometimes joined by his cousin, Jun and Jun’s future retainer and best friend, Tatsuya Suou, who would sneak out of Kashihara Manor to play with Yusuke and his friends. They didn’t understand the political implications, nor did they care. The two had grown up with Yusuke, and took well to making new friends along the way.
It didn’t make life easy, though. Without the Kashihara fortune, Madarame still needed to earn money, and that often took him outside of Garudyne, and often to the imperial capital of Oratorio to earn money. Sometimes, Yusuke would travel alongside him, other times, he would stay behind in Garudyne. Rather than be left alone, he would be watched over by Maya Amano, a local girl who had a very sisterly nature towards Yusuke and all of his friends.
The bonds he forged with them were precious; Yusuke treasured them quite a bit. However, Yusuke could not be confined to Garudyne for his entire life. By the time he was sixteen, he could feel his inspiration for art fading. He had bled Garudyne dry of inspiration, and he needed to see more of the world in order to pursue his art. It was at this point that an aging Madarame made a suggestion: to seek out the Seven Sisters. He knew well that Yusuke would be accepted by the current leader of the troupe, especially given his lineage.
Yusuke did not refuse the idea, but did refuse to rest on the laurels of his name—both Kashihara and Madarame alike. He wanted to succeed by virtue of his own talents, and this was why he adopted a pseudonym—Yusuke Kitagawa.
His talent proved itself well, and by age 17, Yusuke had begun his life as a travelling artist, following in his father’s footsteps to forge a path for himself. Two years later, upon the retiring of twin dancers in the troupe, Lisa and Eikichi joined the ranks of Seven Sisters as a dancer and musician respectively. Yusuke was reunited with his closest friends—but that and art alone could not fulfill him.
He needed muses, and he found many along the way. With each city the Seven Sisters Troupe would visit, he would meet those who would inspire him. More so than landscape or cityscape, more so than the natural hustle and bustle of the kingdom were the individuals who shaped his inspiration… and his heart. Yusuke’s unconventional methods, his natural eccentricities, and his ability to be so sincere because of how inspired he would become drew people to him as well.
His heart could not at all be limited by the confines of society. He went where his heart took him, and whatever would give him the most inspiration. Really and truly, Yusuke couldn’t help himself to fall in love with those who would become his muses. Unlike his father, who fell in love with one and carried that inspiration with him, Yusuke fell for many, and brought himself to them in order to never lose his way.
The first muse that captured him was another traveling musician from Mahama; her voice was so captivating, as was the way she looked when she sang that he made his approach. The second had been in Nyxwing, retainer and heiress, a woman with bright features, who was devoted deeply to those she loved and vowed to protect anyone who was a threat to them.
The years crawled on, and more people captivated his heart. There was the assistant royal tailor of Oratorio, for his contrasting nature of gentle hands but crass speech. There was the royal military’s tactician, who could command any situation, but still carried classic, delicate features. There was a shop attendant who moved to Garudyne from Eigaon, who constantly got in her own way and bemoaned her bad luck, but had style and charm that matched nothing else in the windy city.
And then there were the ones who became most precious and dear. A retainer from Astarte who was fiercely protective, was incredibly strong and equally kind. The lady he protected, a future Governess who seemed like a bird soaring through the skies whenever she walked the streets. He was captivated by both them and the love they shared for one another. There were the pair in Bufula as well; another retainer who always seemed to provide him with food when he’d spent his last money on new paintbrushes, and the noble who was willing to put her own love aside in order to see him happy.
Each one was, and is precious to him. He carries his mementos of them along with his art supplies, traveling the world with his made family in the Seven Sisters troupe. To this day, at the age of 28, he is not limited by the world. He travels, he sees those he loves, and every so often, he returns to Garudyne to tell his father the tales of his travels, the people he meets—and of course, to share new pieces of art as an endless thank you to the person who helped shape him into who he is.

tying in with the "minato gets captured" idea, what abt a king's ransom? the captors dont just be like "arisatia give 10 tons of gold and we good ur king good we just want money"
TNT: This is exactly how it would go.
Akechi: Ah, why didn’t you just say that. Of course.Akira: fUCK YOU??????
Akechi isn’t suggesting they ACTUALLY give them real money… but just like. If they’re insisting on a trade, they need to make that trade happen somehow, which means they’ll do half the job and bring them Minato on the spot instead of force the Arisatian Military to blindly search every corner of the earth (bc who’s to say Minato’s still in Arisatia). Sure, it’d be dangerous, but it’d be the fastest way. Tbh it’d also be dumb of the captors bc I can imagine The Arisatian Military would have snipers ready to take out ALL people responsible unless they came in bulk. Lmao Akira looking at Akechi like “Now what? There’s 25 people here and we have 3 snipers”. Akechi, sweating bullets. “Give me a minute to think, asshole, God, I can’t get anything done around here because of you.”
Akira wouldn’t negotiate or even pretend to, Akira would just straight up go for murder when it came to Minato, esp if they gave him a location, he’d just go in prepared to fucking annihilate all of them. Akechi would be a bit more resourceful and pretend-meet the people halfway to get to Minato and if it means having to cut a few throats on his way out, well, that’s just the way it has to be.
Notice how they wouldn’t work together when it came down to something like a ransom because their methods would clash so much and they’d struggle to agree on anything. Akechi: Fine, you can have your army. I can’t wait for shit to hit the fan.Akira: sO YOU’RE PLANNING TO LET IT HIT THE FAN ARE YOU M-Akechi just, yeah, an unknown amount of people will all be carrying an unknown amount of guns and they’ll all start fucking shooting at the tiniest trigger fucking wonderful Akira tell me more Akira talk about this wonderful plan of yours where we all just simultaneously dodge 50 rounds of death Akira-
I love them but God whytheysofucking dumb.
Straylize: Yeah. Pretty much just.
Again, with no Akechi as a factor in mine, it’s literally just “Akira isn’t going to negotiate or pretend to.” He’s going to run down and obliterate anyone who threatens Minato’s safety. He isn’t going to reward them with money or let them live.
If he doesn’t absolutely kill them all himself, he’s going to make sure they’re locked up in a cell and tortured to the point that they wish they were dead for ever daring to fuck with the king. The worst scenario of all is the one where Akira kills everyone but the ones who arranged it, forcing them to see their comrades die before taking them in for torture interrogations.
I mean, bold of anyone to think Akira would really ever get kidnapped to begin with, but the outcome would just be ugly if it did, honestly.

since you write dmcl, can i ask if you could recommened other dmcl authors? if you don't mind! :o
Sure!
They’re in no particular order, but I tried to grab some names I see regularly or often in the dmcl tags (I sort by update date so if there are people who write them a lot I’m generally familiar with their names!), or people whose names I’ve seen for a good chunk of dmcl fics.
Trilies (also wrote the very popular dmcl coffee shop/modern AU fic)
whorerormovie (a very good friend of mine!)
Salt00
hannahbbug3 (singlehandedly kept the fic fandom alive when it was having a dead streak lol)
QueenPotatos
aetherae
straylize
mother_hearted
cthchewy (responsible for some very cute things!!!)
Quiverquill (another very good friend of mine!)
lazulila (has some + an ongoing dmcl but writes a few ships)
Nelenus
asael
unraelated
asoryuun
Not all of these people are still active/still actively writing dmcl (but I put them here because they have a bunch of older fics still up), but there’s a ton of fics just from that list alone.
I hope that gives you a good bit to read for a while for the boyssss! 💙💛

Another map finished! This time, it’s Tales of Destiny’s area of the world, the Lens Alliance (“alliance” used very loosely, considering Seinegald and Aquaveil’s conflict, and EVERYTHING about Cavalese). This was about the point in my gaming career that I cut myself off from adding any more game worlds into the universe, and it only made the cut due to whims in my original (cringy, don’t read it...not that it’s online anymore) fanfic, and a huge mega crossover I wrote as a play for a school project.
Anyway, the Routing definitely reflects a Seinegaldian-centric worldview, as the majority of Pokemon Scientists are from there. Hugo (not possessed in this version of the world though still becomes a businessman thanks to the stuff he excavated) donates a lot of money to the research due to his wife’s love of animal conservation, and keeps getting rare ‘mons for his kids as presents (half the reason Rutee is a Trainer...when she and Leon were separated from their parents during the war, it kept her remembering the positives of her past). No, seriously...Rutee has Legendaries (even one not from their Region) and a few Pseudos (again, even one not from the Region).
Starters: Tales of Destiny was the subject of Pokemon Retold Gen II, so they get the Johto Starters. This also allows Rutee to have one of her few Starters as one of her in-Region ‘mons (she’s the reason we broke the “make sure their ‘mons are available in their home Region” rule). It’s also why Squirtle and Torchic are around in this region (that and we’ve got some farm country for the latter). She did have to import her Litten from the Southern Islands and her Scorebunny from Elemen, though (Lufia and Teefa came through for her on those regards).
Eevee: Seinegald is actually the country Eevee originated in, with it being a lot more common than in other Regions where they’re either gifts or just came from a small population Released into the wild. They’re basically on the Routes from Darilsheid to the river south of Harmentz, the one from Darisheid to Cresta, and the one from Darilsheid to the Straylize Forest. No wonder Rutee has an absolute LITTER of her own, and why Stahn and Philia have the two she doesn’t have (real reason was me making jokes about the three with the Gen I Eeveelutions).
Legendaries: The Legendary Beasts guard several areas around here (Raikou...the Hidden Temple near Fitzgald, Entei...the volcano filled ridge in Cavalese, Suicune...hides on a lake on the Route from Darisheid to Cresta). Although, Ho-oh is from another Region, so either their story here is different or either it or the Beasts traveled away from where this event happened. Rather, the Hoenn Weather Trio lives on some of the tiny islands around the Region, as do the Lati Twins. Finally, Victini hides in a Lighthouse, like its Unovan Counterpart, near one of Oberon Corp’s factories.
Ultra Beast: Poipole lives in Trash Mountain since there are so many fun poisonous things for it to play in (and it’s adorable...if you could stomach the gas long enough to watch).
Fossils: I had to split Kanto’s up since we have several Regions with no Fossils and only decided to let the island one have a pass (for the same reason Alola has no Fossils). Not to mention the lack of a 9th Region to count from (still debating if I should leave Westland to wait for a new Region or just follow Northland since they’re from the same series). So here we get Omanyte and Kabuto, found in the old dig sites that Hugo used to excavate before founding Oberon (they were underwater caves after all). Due to the area they were in...I wanted them to be both Water Types.
Other Interesting Facts: Other than the stupid joke of Leon having a Sinnistea (because...Leon) and he being the sole reason that ‘mon is in this reason, I can’t think of much. It’s straightforward.
I need to make a few decisions on North and Westland (the only other places with an official map). So while I might get their Route listings done soon, it might take some time to get the Dex order down. Also, it would be longer with more variance since there are a lot of dungeon areas that aren’t just “we went into X castle taken over by the enemy and liberated it.” We have A LOT more caves/forests/uninhabited towers/ruins. So I think it would take time to fix even that portion of the set!

@bishonenprince from here !
It's not as though Leon expects to be recognized by the common folk, even if his face had become quite well-recognized around Seinegald in recent years. But even so, a mercenary? This is the first time he'd been mistaken for such a thing, and from the way Leon reflexively bristles, eyes narrowing, it's clear that he isn't too happy about the comparison.
"I am Leon Magnus, Knight Captain of Seinegald." He's already squaring his shoulders, chin tilted up and drawing himself to every last bit of his (diminutive) height in an attempt to look bigger and older than he actually is. "Not a mercenary. You, on the other hand..."
Hmm. The man in front of him looks very well put together for someone who's wandering around on the forest trail, and his clothes are somewhat similar to the priests of Philia's order. "Are you from Straylize Temple? You've wandered quite a distance."
#[ now that you mention it...the colour is similar to howl lol#it's okay sora! you only look a little suspicious...a little ]#bishounenprince

Just going to use this post to accumulate a list of dmcl fics, modern au or centuries later where dmcl are reincarnated and visiting a museum about the kings, or historians are studying the kings' old love letters.
"the romance of history" by asael. Museum exhibit about the kings.
"the wherabouts of love" by aetherae. Museum exhibit about the kings.
"Words Left Unsaid" by ALeigh30. Dimitri is the museum historian who finds Claude's medieval letter.
