#stranger in paradise

So...this past week, I went to Paris for the first time.

And while it wasn't the reason for the trip, while I was there, I visited some of the places I wrote about in Velvet Waltz, including walking Avenue Foch. (I didn't have time to take the train to Soissons but reader, I considered it!) And seeing these places in real life...it just really stirred something in me. The flight home didn't have wifi (10 hours with no internet... ...) and eventually I was on my notes app drafting the next chapter of Stranger.

I haven't really touched it or written any of these characters in 4 years so I worry whatever I post may feel jarringly different. I'll do my best to make it coherent, but I've definitely improved as a writer since then. So don't be shocked if you notice some edits in the previous chapters. I just want to do right by this story and these characters. I'm aware of how much Velvet Waltz means to a lot of you, and I hope Stranger will meet your expectations.

Ah I wish I had gotten a jump on this summon mentor thing....I had at least 2 choices for Jaune, but for the one to make jack of all trades master of none.

Amakusa Shirou probably would've been my choice. Made him not only become proficient in magecraft but also give the brutal training of an executor.

Sub choice was Jack Garland, a literal Jack of all trades and would've chose the jobs that fit jaune well....limiting it 3.

Those sound like some pretty solid choices. Jaune does seem like he could be a "jack of all trades" fighter.

Amakusa Shirou probably would have been really cool, teaching Jaune how to fight and use magic. It would also be another Fate character I haven't seen or heard about (because I STILL haven't gotten into Fate).

Jack Garland also sounds like an interesting character to have at Jaune's side. Especially when you consider his initial role in the first Final Fantasy, as well as his skills shown in Strangers in Paradise (though I haven't played either of those).

I'm sorry you couldn't have gotten to the bandwagon sooner to submit your idea. However, I won't stop you from building with this AU into making your own story in with Jaune having Jack, Shirou, or BOTH as his mentors. So long as you keep up the good work!

quick thoughts on Stranger in Paradise by Isaac Asimov

I'll be reposting some of my notes on stuff I've read/watched here on Tumblr. First up: Stranger in Paradise by Isaac Asimov (wiki page)

As with other old sci-fi stories, there is some amazing potential in this story if it were not for the horrible ideas and imagery surrounding autism. They're not inaccurate for the timeframe, just terribly outdated to a modern audience. Same as Ursula K. Le Guin's Vaster than Empires and More Slow, there is something there I think has the potential to resonate with many autistic people in terms of a sort of detachment from other people, whether that be in terms of a robot like 'Stranger in Paradise or plants like Vaster than Empires. There is absolutely an angle of dehumanization in these stories, one that specifically targets autistic people with high support needs (if only for the reason that that was the only type of autism known at the time)—we mustn't forget that in discussing these stories. Still, there is a decently long tradition of autistic people relating to characters that are robots, aliens, or otherwise not human (such as Data from Star Trek). I think that can be a worthwhile angle to approach these stories from.

I can't say that I particularly like this version? But it's kind of obligatory not to do a spam and post the original performance, and it is the only case other than the film clip that features Marsinah's parts.

Best I can say is that maybe Kiley was going harder on an acting interpretation than strictly optimizing the music. (Note, however, that I do vastly prefer OBC's And This Is My Beloved, with those delightful overlapping parts, so it's not so much a general issue with the OBC as just their version of Stranger in Paradise.)

Nomura was insane for that statement he made. I know I should be focused on the foreteller part of it but I'm stuck on the inspiration for so much coming from the story of an American blues musician meeting with the devil to get guitar skills.

Like on one hand. Darkness/mom, mom/foretellers, marluxia/sora, mom/xehanort and xehanort/terra all being the devil and guitar player throughout the series imo. But also all I can think about is the devil went down to gerogia because that is so xehanort and sora to me in kh3 like is that literally not their vibe and it's also such a hysterical vision in my mind. I'm sorry like:

"Well, that ol' Devil bowed his head because he knew that he'd been beat

And he laid that golden fiddle down on the ground at Johnny's feet

Johnny said, "Devil, come on back if you ever wanna try again"

Also "this means demyx is mom" I will kms if that's the truth. I think its funnier if demyx also somehow "made a deal with the devil" but he's the only literal interpretation of this story in kh and that's why he has a sitar it would incredibly hilarious
