"I take it then that my son's safety is at your approval?" So she knows. Eddie considers it more dangerous than Quinn being the one to discover it. Quinn will go directly to punishment. Lydia likes to harbor information and use it with discrepancy any way that's most beneficial to her own plans.  Regardless, Eddie can't give away the nerve it's hit. "Ryder's secure," he answers, carefully blank.  Lydia's gaze doesn't decrease in its sharpness as she comes nearer. "I don't care that you warm my son's bed, Eddie. I'm impressed you've been able to keep it from Quinn's attention for so long when he favors you so much."  She's poised for a strike, but Eddie can't tell what kind. She can easily get Eddie out of the way by telling Quinn of the indiscretion. Being in her husband's favor hasn't made Lydia the most pleased person, even if Eddie's done such a good job at maintaining their territory.  "I find it hard to believe that you're okay with someone lesser having Quinn's and Ryder's favors," Eddie replies calmly. Her smile adds to his unease. "On the contrary," Lydia says, "the Toteemists embrace all. And I can respect someone who knows how to play a smart hand at survival." That finally pushes Eddie enough to betray his mask. "I don't align with Ryder out of survival."  Lydia's eyes blaze with triumph. "No, I don't suppose you do."

If yall want a prime example of why my username is what it is, let me tell you about a document I'm working on for @deviantroomba

So roomba is my husband (yes I mean that literally- I got married this year and forgot to tell yall) and also the DM for an irl dnd campaign I'm in with a couple friends. This campaign takes place in a world of his own creation.

My character happens to be a paladin from an island that's very religious. As such, I have been working on an anthropological document outlining the structure of the religion, the hierarchy within the clergy, how it's reflected in the island culture, etc.

I have talked with him At Length about the culture of this island. The document is already somewhere around a thousand words and I'm just getting started.

Something Billy got from his mom, which he later passed on to Max was that if he wasn't feeling the best, he'd just say "beep boop" on repeat and it usually made him feel better by some sort of devil magic

I love placebo effects! My mum used to tell me as a kid that Coca Cola would make you feel better, and let me have some when I was sick. I think there might be something to it, maybe with the bubbles on an upset stomach and maybe the sugar too for headaches and such. I swear if I ever lose a limb I'll drink a Coke and the pain will go away and the limb will probably reattach itself. Beep boop could definitely do it.

oh my god yes. also they all get really different flavors (billy:strawberry, steve:peanut butter and chocolate, and tommy:bubblegum), and every time, without fail, tommy will drink all three of them simultaneously and complain for the next five minutes about how disgusting it was. yet he continues to do it. every. time.

one time they all tried to split one with three straws in it, and they all leaned in to take a sip at the same time and bonked their heads

okokokok the autistic Max hcs gave me a really cute idea. Max and Jonathan bonding over both being autistic (and also having brothers that got possessed, but more so the autism)

I imagine it would play out totally by accident, the two of them bonding. Like maybe everyone’s at some get together or birthday party or something, and they both had started getting a little overwhelmed by everyone being in one small space. Billy had ushered Max out to the back porch for some air before it got to be too much for her, and Jon was already chilling out back there.

Neither of them wants to bother the other, Max almost turns around and goes back inside, but someone yells and laughs really loud on the other side of the door, and she changes her mind right quick. They sit far apart, Jon on the porch swing and Max in a wicker chair on the other end of the porch, but when Max starts humming to herself and flapping her open palms against her chest, Jon sees himself in that, so he invites her to sit with him, a little awkward maybe, but she accepts.

He doesn’t quite know how to bring it up with her, how do you just ask someone you barely talk to if they’re autistic, so instead he asks if it’s okay for him to rock the swing, because he knows he’d like permission first. Something about that consideration for what she would need in the state she’s in must give her the sense that he knows, because then she’s asking him, “How could you tell?”

And can just feel the weight of that question, he’s more than familiar with the mortification and fear that comes with someone just looking at you and knowing you’re different, so he assures her, “Because I’m like you.”

Max smiles so bright the stars overhead are put to shame.

They sit out there for at least an hour, talking back and forth about things they could never get the group to understand, things like their feelings and their stims and even their brothers, and a little bit of infodumping too.

It can feel pretty isolating sometimes, trying to communicate with people who just do not have the same experiences as them, so it’s nice, knowing they have someone now that they can go to if they need it.

Because Jonathan is older than her, there are still some experiences they won’t always be able to relate to, so it’s not like they become best friends or anything, but they definitely start to seek each other out more.

Max will bring Jonathan her questions about life, about all the things she’s been told she could never achieve and things she doesn’t understand, because as supportive as her own brother tries to be, he just doesn’t get it in the way Jon does. He gives her the best advice he can, and it helps him too, because he’s got to practice what he preaches.

If he tells Max not to be embarrassed to stim in front of her friends, how can he turn around and hide his hands in his pockets so he doesn’t flap them? If he tells her to try really hard to find something she wants to do with her life and stick to it, how can he keep avoiding applying to college out of the fear that they won’t want someone like him?

So even though it’s an unexpected friendship for sure, the difference in the both of them is so obvious to all their friends, and everyone (especially them) is just really glad that they found someone to share their thoughts and feelings with!
