Some random Red observations (because he’s my favorite)

In no particular order, but starting with:

1. Red is the only one to directly break the fourth wall by verbally acknowledging the readers, but I’ve noticed there’s also a handful of times he seems to look directly at the reader as well.

You could argue he’s just looking behind himself to check, but the framing feels a bit intentional. Like he’s aware that’s not quite true.

This instance could also be nothing, but considering everyone else is looking forward, it's possible he’s addressing the reader. But it's just as likely a dig at Blue, too, all things considered.

2. Vio only answered Red’s question directly.

Granted, “don’t be so shocked” is also a response to Blue (and Green), but not one that answers his question.

This doesn’t really mean anything, I just think it’s neat. Assuring it’s the real him just makes sense, there’s no deeper meaning there, but I like to think it’s also partially because Red was so torn up earlier about not knowing where the real Vio was (in the Temple of Darkness). That's at the very least why Red was the one to ask this anyway.

3. Knowing Red holds grudges, as seen with Blue in the cave, this was probably intentional.

“Oops.” <- he's not sorry lmao.

Considering Red and Vio are frequently shown standing next to each other early on in the manga, but not as often once they all reunite, it's definitely something to think about. (Side note: most of the instances post-reunion where they're near each other are because of Vio running over to Red. You can't convince me Red's not his favorite.)

4. Since we can’t see Red’s arms here, he’s probably hugging Blue.

This is the closest we get to an actual hug between the two. (And if his arms are just pinned in front of him, then we still have no hug between these two, which is odd, considering they most certainly spent the most time together out of all of them.)

5. Red’s just idling here.

We do see a more expected reaction from him on the next page, but it's interesting that he wasn't given a mouth to emote with like the others. What's he feeling here?

6. Of the colors, Red was probably the only one whose sword could have been stolen.

The other three are quick to draw their weapons when faced with potential danger, but Red never even thought of taking his sword out, thus allowing for it to be taken in the first place.

He literally has a buncha hostile adults pointing pitchforks and shovels in his face and he's still trying to defuse the situation with talking (though, to be fair, drawing a weapon could have led to a fight, he probably knew that.) I also think the other's would have noticed someone trying to take off their sword (with the exception of maybe Green?), so that tracks for Red to be more focused on the emotional crowd than where his literal source of being is.

He's not very good at talk-no-jutsu, but at least he tried.

7. The manga would be a lot shorter had Red been pointing the fire rod at himself.

Either that, or his comic relief powers would have let him tank it. Though it would have severely undermined the threat of being potentially burned alive way later in the volcano.

Side note, the mob of people chasing him are either incredibly stupid, or way too confident in their ability to withstand point blank fire to the face. If Red weren't so unwilling to hurt innocent people, or was someone actually villainous, they very easily could have gone out the same way their village did.

Mob mentality is one helluva a drug.

8. Not pictured, but with how often Red falls over, it makes me wonder if Link is clumsy? Like, did Link's quirks also get divided between the four of them? We know Blue likes to fold his hat and keep things organized (if we take the bonus comics to be somewhat true), but what else can we piece together from the og Link?

At the very least, Vio being so accurate with a bow leads me to believe all the knights are trained in archery to some degree, though it seems Link would much rather stick to a sword, if Green and Blue are any indication.

Red being able to pick up and drop so many weapons (slingshot, magic rods) probably means Link was able to adapt easily to new combat styles, along with Blue and Vio favoring their secondary weapons at times also being a point to that.

For all the faults Link definitely has, he's a powerhouse on the field. Perhaps that's what led to him being so cocky.

(But seriously, why is Red hoarding so many weapons)

Missed opportunity to have the 'magical god-killing macguffin' weapon be Andruil's spear. Rather than have an idol somehow become a dagger (not to mention cleansed of the blight and somehow expect us to just accept this - no questions) it could be this?

Also imagine Ghilan'nain being killed by Andruil's spear...raised to Godhood by Andruil's hand and then slain by the weapon forged by her hand???

I haven't seen a lot of people talk about him but harry melling absolutely killed it as wriothsely. for one of the first times we see the character of wriothsely really focused on in tudor media, he did an outstanding job at portraying a flawed, torn, nuanced and morally ambiguous risley. i loved him, and his ability to have amazing chemistry with mark rylance.

i could almost look past the fact that he didn't have red hair, in s2 even tho the s1 actor had it. idk maybe they ran out of lightener, copper hair color and 50 vol developer on set but he did good.

thinking about season 4 si-5. Thinking about the aftermath. Thinking about the absolutely fascinating trust Jacobi and Kepler have in each other- Jacobi in knowing that Kepler will make the right call, will keep the team safe, no matter how batshit nuts his plan of action is. Kepler in knowing that he can push Jacobi just as far to the edge without him falling over and without Kepler losing him or his unyielding faith.

And then season 3 finale happens and Maxwell dies. And Jacobi’s world view is thrown upside down. His strongest objectively positive relationship came out of his si-5 work, his relationship with Maxwell. A relationship that was a result of Kepler’s leadership. In seconds he loses his best friend and when he loses that, he loses everything he thought he knew about the situation he was in. Kepler slipped up, things were finally, finally pushed too far, something Jacobi was sure would never happen because there have been so many times where he was pushed just the right amount, but it happened.

It cost him his best friend and, in a way, cost him his relationship with Kepler. He loses his perspective on Kepler that he had. He loses that unyielding faith in the situation he is in. Kepler didn’t die, but Jacobi loses both relationships he formed in the si-5 when Maxwell did.

i watched kpop demon hunters last night and it is not good but it's so funny how them being a kpop group and also being demon hunters basically have nothing to do with each other. like doing kpop doesn't make them better at hunting demons nor vice versa, but also they rarely get in the way of each other or make it harder to do the other. the average hannah montana episode will give you more satisfying double life time scheduling hijinks slash double life emotional complexes than this movie

we know that Reko's father forced her into the industry at an early age, but it's not entirely clear what genre. The idea of it being an 'industry' definitely implies she was more of a pop idol since there isn't really a 'classical' industry in the same vein, though there is still definitely heavy competition and a lot of notoriety to be gained through being very skilled at classical music, especially at an early age, so I wouldn't be so quick to write that off, either. Even so, the plot line of her being 'forced to make music she didn't want to make' and her father being blinded by money definitely feels like it makes more sense in the context of a popstar. In my personal opinion, I like the pop idol route because it really emphasizes the distinction between her current views and aesthetic and the one her father would've been trying to get her to be. A sudden stark rebellion by going super edgy and emo in middleschool contrasts with her needing to be seen as nice, innocent, happy all the time (and probably a fair bit more feminine than she actually felt, too, since alt styles are heavily associated with androgyny). Its also worth noting that she mentioned crushing multiple huge industry offers throughout her later years, which further implies she had a strong reputation already. However logic is pulling on my sleeve and it's telling me that it honestly feels weirder for a 10-13 (this age range being chosen with the logic that it would've had to been *before* or she entered middle school, as per her personal account) year old kid to be a super successful pop idol than a highly successful classical music prodigy. Though, I guess there's the possibility her father actively lied about her age to get her in the idol industry.

I feel like the Hololive English that I loved the most probably peaked in late 2024. A few things capture that moment: everything around Ame & Fauna's graduations, The Broken Promise musical, Advent & Justice really blossoming into their own...

But for my money, the best single thing that encapsulates everything I loved about HoloEN is Odyssey. Myth, Promise, Advent, and Justice all singing together in a song put together by one of their own and not some bland project from Cover.

It tugs at my heart in a way I had forgotten things could. I want to cry, I want to smile. I mostly want to hold it up for all time and say

"This was my Hololive English, the community that I love."

Although that's not really the case, the truth is that he's usually very calm and has a serious expression. Fans love the gap moe, so they make him act that way because they know Gakupo is a method actor. Unless he's in character, you'll never see him with any expression other than a relaxed one.
