You know what I'm thinking about today?Season 3 episode 3. SPECIFICALLY the part where the pedo teacher says "If love can be called a mistake" while looking directly at Mickey and Mickey gives a side eye to Ian, clearly uncomfortable. And then he IMMEDIATELY hates himself for thinking that he is in love with Ian, another man, or even considering it as a possibility, so he overcompensates by trying to look Super Straight™ and fucking Angie. Dude. He was so abused and brainwashed by Terry that he had to dismiss the thought that he had feelings for Ian by screwing the first random chick he saw. Like that took anything away. He was fucking terrified. HE DIDN'T FEEL SAFE EVEN WITH HIS OWN THOUGHTS IN HIS OWN HEAD

#43. "pick up lines only work when i'm drunk."

"ian. are you listening to me?"

"mhm."

"...i'm thinking of leaving tami and the kids so i can ride off into the sunset with joaquin. thoughts?"

"sounds good," ian says vaguely, eyes glued to the dark-haired man sitting at the bar. "i'm sure she'll understand."

"man, you've got it bad." lip shakes his head, amused. "just go over and talk to him."

ian doesn't even turn his head. "who?"

lip rolls his eyes. "the guy you've been staring at for the past hour, who looks like he's part of a biker gang and one second away from smashing a bottle over someone's head. "

"i haven't been staring," ian says defensively, finally peeling his eyes away from the bar. "casually looking, maybe. at his tattoos. and his leather jacket. and his ass."

"and here i thought you wanted to catch up with your dear ol' brother." lip sighs. "how naive was i to think we could have family bonding time."

ian sighs. "grow up lip, we're in a gay bar. the only reason i called you and not carl is because for some reason he manages to pull more guys than me and well, you're... you."

"what the hell is that supposed to mean?" lip asks, slightly offended. "are you saying gay men don't find me attractive?"

"are you saying you want men to hit on you?"

lip shrugs. "i'm just saying, if i really tried, i can definitely pull a dude. y'know, hypothetically speaking, of course."

"okay, mr. i'm-ninety-six-percent-straight," ian snorts. "so, you think i should go and straight up flirt with him? or should i buy him a drink first? or maybe wait for him to come to me?"

"i think you should walk out the door and douse yourself in holy water because homosexuality is a sin and you're going to hell," lip replies solemnly.

"you're no help," ian sighs, sliding out of the booth. "i should've brought carl instead."

"okay, now i'm offended."

ian waves him off and struts over to his target at the bar, tapping the man on the shoulder.

"i think," he starts to say, leaning up against the counter, "you owe me a drink."

the man raises his pierced brow. looks ian up and down and smirks. "do i now."

"because when i saw you from across the room, i dropped my drink on the floor, so."

the man takes a sip from his glass, shaking his head slightly. "pick up lines only work when i'm drunk, and i'm not even two drinks in yet."

"i'll cut to the chase then." ian holds out his hand. "i'm ian. and you are...?"

the man looks down for a moment, before pressing their hands together and shaking. "mickey."

"so, mickey." ian leans forward, still gripping mickey's hand, ghosting his mouth close to mickey's ear. "you want to get drunk, or you want to get out of here?"

lip sighs as he watches the guy immediately throw a twenty on the counter and both of them leave out the front door together without a backwards glance. just as he's about to leave as well, he sees out of the corner of his eye someone checking him out from the next table over. a man, specifically, with tan skin and dark brown hair who, if he's being honest, kind of looks like joaquin?

lip contemplates, for just a teensy moment, whether he should go over and talk to the guy. you know, strictly for scientific purposes - only to prove a point to his stupid little brother who ditched him at a bar to bang some random dude.

but then again, he doesn't think tami will appreciate him flirting with a man - or anyone really - just so he can prove ian wrong and shove it in his smug little face. so he leaves quickly without looking back and thinks it's best, perhaps, the other four percent inside of him is better left unexplored.

Hilarious to me that from Debbie and Carl's point of view Ian was dating Mandy and got her pregnant and had a fundraiser to get her an abortion and then one day she comes home with Lip and she's kind of his girlfriend now instead and Ian's not jealous or anything but is pissed at Lip for not treating her well? The alleged love quadrilateral that is Lip, Ian, Mandy, and Mickey must be so wild from the outside.

“All this for me, huh?” Ian gestures the room with his head, his arms still draped around Mickey’s shoulders.

His eyes meet Mickey’s, the clatter and noise around them falling nearly silent as their eyes lock. He can’t manage to break his gaze, completely enthralled by Mickey’s beaming expression and soft stare...that closed-mouth smile spreading from ear-to-ear, causing the small lines by his eyes to crinkle…the blush pink flooding his cheeks as Ian’s eyes grow fonder with each passing moment.

Mickey shrugs, “What can I say? Been caught up on you for ten years, Gallagher.”

ian and mickey one THOUSAND percent often roleplay in the bedroom that ian is an out and proud gay guy who corrupts ~straight~ mickey and turns him gay. i know this is a regular occurrence just trust me

"So?" Ian asks, walking backward with arms spread wide to either side. "What do you think?"

"I think it was crazy to spend sixty bucks a pop is what I think," Mickey retorts. "What's wrong with sneakin' in?"

Ian's arms drop, and though he would refuse to admit it, he pouts.

"If I hadn't gone through the line for tickets," he says, "I wouldn't have been able to tell the ticketer that it was my husband's first time here." He raises a brow, and adds, "and she wouldn't have comped that fast-pass upgrade."

Mickey's ears feel warm, the way they always do when Ian flaunts their still-new titles.

"I guess the decorations are cool," he gives in, and the beam Ian graces him with is worth it.

"Just wait 'til you try my favorite ride! It's across the park, but it's worth the walk!"

Ian is practically vibrating with excitement, bouncing on his heels. Every time he bounces up, his head aligns with some creepy clown guy standing behind him, making it look like he's the one wearing the awful red wig.

Mickey chokes back a laugh, and gestures with one arm.

"Lead on.""

Ian wasn't lying--they really are crossing the entire damn park. They pass half a dozen rollercoasters, a haunted mansion, some ride where you get to shoot stuff with lasers--Mickey is definitely coming back to that one--all glowing an eerie reddish-orange against the darkening sky.

The crowds thin a little as they go, too, shifting from kids and parents to edgy teenagers and a handful of other couples. The noise dissipates as they leave the main area, and so do the lights. The actors are gone, and the regular attendants. They're just walking through a darkened theme park in the middle of the night, the pavement growing cold beneath them.

Somewhere behind them a child shrieks, and laughter follows. The echoes are tinged with a malice that makes Mickey's shoulders hunch under his jacket, makes him draw it tight against the night wind.

"Somebody's having fun," Ian comments, but Mickey isn't so sure.

There's more laughter. Closer this time, louder.

"Hurry up man," Mickey says, and picks up his own pace. "I wanna get there before dawn."

He wants to get somewhere, at least. Somewhere with lights again, and people. Where he doesn't hear his own footsteps echo and feel the need to look back over his shoulder as harsh laughter closes in behind him.

In his haste, though, he's only made it worse. Because the next corner they turn leads into a tall tunnel of metal and piled brush, and suddenly they're completely alone.

"So, uh, how much farther we going?" Mickey asks, and walks as close next to Ian as he can. There's not much light in the tunnel, just a few colored bulbs and the little moonlight that makes it through overhead, but he's close enough to feel Ian shrug.

"Think we're almost there."

Mickey stops.

"You think?" he asks. There's a weird feeling climbing up his back, up his neck. "Or you know?"

"I mean, I'm pretty sure." Ian stops too, turns back to him. "Why? Something wrong?"

And no, nothing's wrong. But also, yes.

"Damn it Ian," he hisses, eyes closing as he runs a hand through his hair. "Can't believe I let you talk me into this."

Ian taps his shoulder, but Mickey shrugs it off.

"I thought we were gonna go on rides, maybe shoot somethin', scare a few kids," he goes on. "Not wander around in the dark, probably halfway out of the park, with no fucking clue where we are!"

"Mickey," Ian says quietly, and taps his shoulder again.

"Don't Mickey me!" His breath is coming fast, and he pinches the top of his nose. Breathes through his mouth instead. "I need to--"

One more tap on his shoulder, and he drops his hand, spins around and shoves.

"Mickey!" Ian shouts, and Mickey wants to push him again, needs to push past and out of this dead-end tunnel and out of this goddamned park and--

And Ian had said that from behind him. Which means...

Mickey opens his eyes, and stares in startled red. Red from colored contacts, which go with the kid's plastic fangs and black cape. Red that's surrounded on all sides by white, eyelids stretched in shock.

"Um," Mickey says, feeling both a lot more settled and a lot more embarrassed by how much the night had gotten to him. "Sorry?"

The kid just blinks at him. Behind, Ian laughs. And instead of echoing with malice, it lights up the tunnel like the sun.

“Sorry kid,” Mickey repeats. Ian is still laughing when he turns and takes his hand. “Shut up,” Mickey orders, swallowing the giggle that lightens his own chest, “and let’s go find your coaster.”

writers of any kind, i've always been curious about. what does it feel like to write a story without an happy ending? and why do you do it?

let me explain. when i write i get so attached to my stories and the characters i created that it would genuinely destroy me not to make them happy at the end, especially if it's something i've put a lot of time and effort into. but i'm also like this as a reader (no matter how good a story is, if i know it's not happy at the end i won't even start it) so maybe it might depend on that?

i imagine it's a bit like listening to sad music when you're sad, you get to just pour everything you're feeling into it. but what about fanfics with over 100k words or whole published books building the story just to have a sad ending? doesn't that hurt even more as a writer?
