v amused watching this video of this japanese man camping in a cozy 2 room tent with 2 different kinds of heaters, and finding the video recommended under it is a man with no sleeping bag, no tent and camping in alaska during winter. obsessed.
#he has like a kerosene heater i assume?#and a regular wood stove#not even just to cook with just to heat his tent#he has a regular gas stove to cook#he has so many gadgets with him#and a small dog in a sweater#and#the fucking contrast with the thumbnail of the guy sat in the fucking snowy alaskan wilderness#with nothing but a gun and a campfire#hilarious#hes just sat casually feeding his dog a banana during this and i occasionally catch a glimpse of the other guys thumbnail#its killing me

ok because i’m on the train and i just bought some what do you think the best post apocalyptic rugelach filling would be. (if you don’t know what rugelach is, click that wikipedia link, or the truncated version is it’s a filled small pastry originally from jewish communities in poland but now it’s made all over the world and people put all sorts of fillings in them. the filling can be jam, nuts with spices, flavored pastry cream, or even savory fillings. the kind i just bought are chocolate, in case you’re wondering.)
#fnv#fnv poll#fallout new vegas#fallout new vegas poll#btw in the other option i know not everyone knows kashrut (hewish dietary laws) but try not to include insects meat+dairy combo or meat from#predators because those aren’t kosher thank uuuu i love you i hope you have fun thinking about post apocalyptic pastries#i think having a ton of different bakeries in post battle of hoover dam vegas would be so cool#there’s really not a lot of food or clothing vendors in the mojave which i talk about a lot. i think it’s because (no offense lol) the game#was mostly made by cis white guys and as a demographic cis white gamer guys tend to not think about how clothing and food get made. like#the amount of effort that goes into feeding and clothing a community is generally one of the largest jobs. because it’s hard and labor#intensive. so while there are tons of food stands in freeside and vegas there’s still not like clothing stores which is weird. and in the#rest of the mojave there’s really not a lot of food vendors. like in novac there’s genuinely no food vendor. there’s a food tent with a#stove and a lady who stands there all day. but you can’t buy food from her. and no one else sells food unless cliff happens to have some#randomly. and there’s only one couple in town who raise like 5 livestock. so where the fuck do they all get food. no wonder carla hated it#there there’s no food no water just dinosaurs and radioactive junk#anyway i’m going off on a tangent

Wait, there's actually people weighing their gear for backpacking? I always thought it was a joke or something. I used to do a lot more backpacking myself, and the average weight for everyone in my troop was 55 pounds. It's really no issue
I mean... I'm mostly doing it because I have cabin fever and am trying to avoid seasonally appropriate work lol.
But maybe I should clarify why my gear weighs so freaking much.
I don't leave the house without a -10 sleeping bag. I live in the north, there's no guarantee you won't hit freezing in July, and I hate being cold.
Lightweight silnylon just doesn't work around here. Even the day hike trails will snag your gear on black spruce or devil's club and rip holes in it. The few truly lightweight items I have are as much gear tape as original material.
I'm also not going out overnight without my Whisperlight stove, fuel, and Spot beacon. Just no.
Ditto a proper tent. The bugs out here will suck you dry without screens, and the summer storms will find their way under, around, or through any kind of tarp and don't announce themselves more than 10 minutes in advance.
I have a pathological aversion to synthetic hiking clothes. I'll bring some in case I get rained out and need them, but my everyday clothes will mostly be natural fibers tough enough to stand up to the brush that don't feel like crap (do not tell me I'm wrong, I already know every expert says not to do this. Too bad. If I can't hike comfortable, why hike at all?)
My solar panel, backup battery, and book may be labelled luxuries on published packing lists, but they're non-negotiable. Again, what's the point backpacking if I'm bored?
Water bottles. A hydration insert has too much potential to get punctured, and is too limited in what you can use the water for without great difficulty. At least 2 full Contigo bottles go everywhere I go. Plus a filter as backup.
This bag has everything I need except a toothbrush, clothes, and food. It weighs 31 pounds.
Most recommendations for someone my size say don't go over 35 pounds, but this doesn't actually feel too bad. Depending on terrain, weather, and trip length, I could easily add another 10 pounds without worrying. There's still lots of room in the bag if I needed it.
And I don't usually head out for multiple days on my own. If I was hiking with T one of us would take the tent and the other would take the kitchen stuff to break up weight a bit.
So the numbers are a lot better than I'd hoped when I started this morning. Not that it's going to matter for the next 6 months.
#thanks for indulging my shenanigans guys#nothing like a perfectly good Sunday when things could get done to daydream about trips i can't do in this weather#it helps that the day pack i take everywhere with me is already almost 20 pounds#with flares bear spray plb gps compass tarp emergency blankets first aid kit a couple jackets water bottles water filter headlamp#spare batteries a couple knives 300 feet of cord dog stuff and whatever rocks i forgot to take out between hikes#also most of my gear was used or thrifted#thats the case for my big pack some of my pots my solar panels and both jackets#i justified buying the tent and bag as school supplies for my outdoor rec classes#and the stove was non-negotiable#it runs on bike gas and kerosene as well as naphtha and might be the nicest piece of gear i own

In a post apocalyptic scenario where my hormonal iud inevitably stops working and I have to deal with my period again, diva cups really are the best option. I still carry a collapsible one in my bag and honestly that would be in my apocalypse bug out bag, thank god someone gave Ellie a diva cup
#tlou#my bugout bag is the same as my bush camping bag#and it’s a tent a sleeping bag my bow (collapsible) a combo hatched and shovel a bunch of iodine a filter straw a camp stove and fuel#couple knives in there too and some flint and dryer lint for fires#and like a couple lighters#when I was in hs and suffering from The Brain Bads I’d go into the woods with just my bow#and a knife and some water#and I’d make a shelter and just hang out in the forest for a while#survivalism is my yoga and meditation I find it so calming and fulfilling to just yeet out of reality for a couple days#make a shelter out of pine boughs and make a little fire#in an irl zombie apocalypse tho I’d just immediately grab a boat and go to an island#growing up on a boat I know how to sail and boats are the best way to escape… anything#if the zombies can swim then I’ll have to reconsider the island but a small wooded isle#sail back to mainland to hunt for food and scavenge#Maine is the perfect place to survive in#the island I lived on as a kid even has wicked old forts and shit#for winter

Weekly Update: 12.21.24
The closer we get to Christmas, the busier life seems to be. The chaos this week was compounded by sickness. We perservered, however, and even had some fun along the way.
The closer we get to Christmas, the busier life seems to be. The chaos this week was compounded by sickness. My niece came down with a fever on Wednesday, two more were sick the next day, and by the end of the week, almost no one felt totally healthy. We perservered, however, and even had some fun along the way. Photo Credit: Grace Gage Our biggest project in the bunkhouse was the hearth. We…
