Unleashing Hidden Ambitions: The Power of Storytelling in Group Therapy ✊
In a dimly lit room, a small group of strangers gathered, each carrying untold stories and dreams long buried. We began our session with metaphorical cards, each participant selecting an image that resonated with their current state.
The theme? Suppressed ambitions.
Anna, a young artist, drew a card depicting a bird trapped in a gilded cage. Her voice trembled as she shared, “I feel like I’ve clipped my own wings. My family sees my art as a hobby, not a career, and I’ve started to believe them.”
Next was Mark, a former athlete turned office worker, who chose a card of a vast desert with a lone runner. “That’s me,” he said. “I’m still running, but I’ve lost sight of the finish line. I used to dream of coaching, but life got in the way.”
Each story unfolded, weaving a collective narrative of fear, doubt, and unfulfilled potential. Yet, within the cards, we also found hope.
For the next step, everyone selected a card representing where they wanted to be. Anna picked a soaring eagle, free and powerful. Mark chose a lush forest trail, symbolizing growth and direction.
Through guided storytelling, we connected the dots: What would their journey from the cage or desert to their ideal state look like? What obstacles stood in their way, and how could they overcome them?
The magic of the session lay in the group dynamic. As each person shared their fears and hopes, others chimed in with encouragement and insights. Mark told Anna, “Even eagles start in a nest. Maybe your art needs a safe place to grow before it takes flight.”
By the end of the session, everyone left with a clearer vision of their path and the support of a newfound community.
Storytelling isn’t just about words – it’s about discovering the narratives we live by and rewriting them to unlock our true potential.

Role-playing and storytelling with dementia folks works because it relies on creativity, not memory. And it’s fun! Props like hats help people get into character. A cowboy, a Frenchman, a fashion designer, a British noble, and a saloon girl attended this small session! #facesofcare #storytellingtherapy 📷: @mhersky https://ift.tt/2JGkVa8
