I have thoughts! They are below! Please remember that we are a DawnTrail-Critical household!

[Not in the sense that I hate it but I actually really loved a lot about it but that I think the writing was extremely mixed]

Ok for real now-first of all really loving everything going on with my beloved Dawn Throne family. Wuk Lamat is being amazing as usual. I love that we got closure about Koanas folks [cuz like, c'mon there was no way it went down as he remembered as like 2 year old LOL;;]. LOVE THAT HE REALLY STOOD BETWEEN A RONEEK AND A GIANT CHARGING DINO OF DOOM LIKE THAT WAS GOING TO STOP IT YOU WEIGHT LIKE 120LBS KOANA LOL

And I love that we've finally got something about Galool Ja and who his mom was, even if everything about it was so sad and broken from the start. I figured it would have to be, given Zoraal Ja's staunch denial of the child's presence. It still hits the right amount of tragic in the reveal of it all.

Also very excited that yes, Y'Shtola will be bothering me to examine the magical maguffin, even if I still don't like that it exists lol.

And I'm not even talking about hologram Sphene. BUT ALSO I AM 100% SURE HER ATTENDANT DID IT. OR SOMEONE CLOSE TO HER. Someone rebooted the system and then yoinked themselves back into the matrix.

ANYWAYS. I MEAN THE REAL SPHENE. THE ONE Y'SHTOLA JUST FOUND IN LIVING MEMORY.

I just. Its gotta be her, bleary eyed and confused about where the fuck she is. I'M CONFUSED TOO THE AETHER JUST SPAT HER BACK OUT FULLY FORMED. She sounds like she just woke up from dying!

At first I was just too mad about the whole thing with AI Sphene being back to think too much on it. On the extremely sus set up of it all, and what those neo regulators are *really for* bc you know Wuk Lamat is right. The AI Sphene we know was prepared to sacrifice the whole damn universe to save all her people, not just a few. Whoever this is realizes they only have so many resources to do this with.

BUT NOW WE HAVE REAL SPHENE IN THE MIX TOO. AND GUYS I UH...REALLY HOPE THIS PLAYS OFF WELL.

Because AI Sphene was a monster, cute smile and all, and I did not enjoy how hard the narrative tried to make us see her as a good person, or how inactive we were about it. Wuk Lamat is new to this, but we, and not just the WoL, but Alisae too, were right there and never said anything about how much this resembles past foes.

But guys. Real Sphene has the possibility of making all that just...a little bit less annoying. I hope. It wont fix the first half's writing issues, but it can turn it in a better direction. Especially if what it is, is that the writers decided to play the long game in terms of their two story halves more so than they have in the past.

Imagine. Queen Sphene wakes up. Finds the kingdom has lived far beyond her expectations. They survived and are wondrous and innovative...and they are also throwing the cycle of life and death out of wack. They are forgetting themselves and each other for the solace of avoiding death and pain. They are hurting others to do it. They are being lead by someone who looks like her, but has no compassion for anyone outside her own kingdom. If Sphene is even half the person the AI made her out to be...then she would be heartbroken to see what has become of her kingdom. And she has the power and authority to stop it.

The story has made a point to say "we don't know what the real Sphene would have wanted". Well shes here now, and boy wouldn't it be fucking amazing, if she said "not any of this".

It has real potential now too, to talk about the difference between the memory and actuality. How memory can distort and change over time, be a shadow of the truth. And...idk that they are going to go this route, but if Sphene is not going to be the only one to come back from Living Memory-then all the Alexandrians have to be confronted with those they forgot. Fucking imagine coming back from the dead only to find none of your loved ones even remember who you are?? What would even be the point?

I also. Really just want this to happen in the middle of the square in Solution 9:

I am very tempted to write a anthological Fan fiction about Skylanders and expand on the stories we have some info about but not all. Here are some of my ideas: Dino-Rang/Crash Bandicoot/Spyro & Cynder: These three together in the revisioning of the universe where its a little after the Legend of Spyro trilogy, Cynder and Spyro are being adorable until they uncover something. The world was recreated so they don’t really know what to think about what they found, which is a ruin. Is it a hold over from the old world? Is it a call to another Spyro and his friends? Well, they activate the portal and it releases something...

On two different sides, you have Crash recently winning against Neo-Cortex yet again but as the victory is had, Crash is suddenly whisked away through a portal, thinking its Neocortex’s doing. Meanwhile Ty the Tasmanian Tiger (Didn’t expect him huh) is visiting a village in search of a possibility of reuniting with his people. A portal opens though and out of fear of their new friend being hurt, a villager pushed Ty out of the way but fell into the portal, that being Dino-Rang.

Drobot/Drill Sergeant: A revision of his story would be similar to the story he had originally, a dragon who was more fascinated with technology before ending up on an island of tech. In this revision, it is not Terrafin who finds Drill Sergeant but Drobot, who while scavenging for parts finds the old robot intact and begins to work on him, the Arkeyan robot being onlined at the end causing a flashback for Drobot to watch.

Arkeyan Origins (Chop-Chop, Drill Sergeant, Crypt King, & Maybe another): So this version of the Arkeyans are somewhat different, kinda like the Combine from Half-life with the elemental origins being Undead and Tech as there would be more minor characters that are not skylanders in this story. Unlike the combine though, they are not conquerers, they are refugees from their world falling apart and they ended up in Skylands very shortly after its creation. And an enemy would be there, likely one of the cut skylanders we seen or a giant, leaning to cut character for a lot more content to play with. Ultimately Crypt King is damaged and Chop-Chop decides to save him by taking him to the underworld, leaving Drill Sergeant on the isle just for Drobot to find way later.

Sunburn: This one may be the darkest but this story idea ties into the first like the latter two connected. Sunburn wasn’t from Skylands in this revision idea, he was a creation made in a different realm. A few months after weird energies began to fluctuate, a scientist found a connection to another world, getting a dragon scale and with a part of a phoenix, began their dark expirements. Stretching the DNA of both beings until Sunburn was created, and when Sunburn was awoken, he did not have much to go off of but due to expirementation on the portal tech Spyro and Cynder have been doing with the help of other beings, Sunburn could tap into it. Sunburn is the first Portal Master and ended up in Skylands when testing out abilities, being scared by what he found, and began to drift between realms before coming back to Skylands, realizing, that is where he keeps being called back too. And the Traumatized fire lizard seeks out whoever is in charge to get answers about who he is. That person in charge being Spyro.

There are other characters I have in mind for possible stories but its mainly like the time of early Skylands so the only civilizations already sort of set up are the dragons and a few scattered ideas of others existing from a holdover of the previous world still are here. The Magic that created the new Skylands too created new life and one idea would be a Stump Smash story but still working on ideas for that. On the other hand it would mainly be aspects like this where it takes more of the Legend of Spyro Canon and apply it to Skylanders, doing my best to meld the series and possibly making something a little darker as you would see quite a bit more to possibly meld together and could tie into the aspect that Skylands is not in a normal universe setting but is a sort of shattered universe where life thrives in this corner of the multiverse but go beyond the unleashed magic that involved the ending of the Legend of Spyro Trilogy, and you will find something way more twisted in ideas.

DINO FURY RUMORS + IF I BELIEVE THEY ARE TRUE

So here is the complete list of rumors that leaked today. Take these with a grain of salt

red : highly unlikely

yellow : possible (wouldn’t be surprised or rule it out)

green : highly likely or pretty much confirmed

Lord Zedd invades Grid Battleforce and gets his Staff 💚 — Commander Shaw has already been confirmed to be returning, so there’s a likelihood that that box of “legendary” items will make a return.

Zayto gets a new alien Rafkon power up 💚 — Probably MaxRyusoul red equiv. as it does resemble void knights design, which zayto is familiar with.

Green Morphin master is in charge of prime universe 💛 — Because there have been multiple universes in pr, it does explain why they’re the only ones making consistent appearances. 

Lord Zedd returns to the moon palace ❤️ — So with a lot of the more mmpr connected things, I only put them as not very likely because I feel like it would cost a lot to try and recreate everything. 

Lord Zedd rebuilds NEO Serpentera in the final 3 episodes ❤️ — Maybe it should be yellow, but I have a feeling most of Ryusoulgers ending arc will be cut, so this could happen. Rebuilds? Seems like a lot (for production)

We have a clip show halfway into season 2 💚 — There are clip shows every season, is anyone shocked?

The villains of PR have a villains database just like the Rangers have a Ranger database 💚 — Wasn’t there one in Beast Morphers? Pretty much confirmed, but even then, I'm sure one is going to be present cause doesn’t the rangers’ database have info on villains. They could hack their data.

Dino Fury rangers get trapped in the dark dimension in one episode to fight MOTW 💚 — I'm sure they’re something from Ryusoulger that can be interpreted as a dark dimension. But also, having a dark version of something isn’t that new to pr. Dark energems, dark power stars (although lasted like one ep i think), dark robo knight, etc.

Lord Zedd creates "NEW" Dark Rangers that look exactly like the Dino Fury suits but different shade 💛 — Again, having a dark version of something isn’t out of the ordinary, so I say it’s possible.

Amelia's dad is Void Knight 💛 — See, I’m sure it’s true, but a small part of me just doesn’t buy it. It’s pretty much a one sided relationship (in that nothing from void knight so far would indicate family other than Santurna). And I feel like Amelia looking for her parents or clues of their disappearance would be a bigger part of her story, but all her focus ep’s were filler (even 11 is 80% filler)

Void Knight's girlfriend turns into a monster 💛 — I could see it, could happen we still have Pricious’ counterpart to get to, even Eras. I’ve also seen they’re adapting Madame Noir[‘s design] from ToQger, sooo.. maybe that’s why?

Lord Zedd is holding the other morphin masters captive in blue Zordon esque energy tubes 💛 — I have no comment.

Izzy's girlfriend makes another appearance 💚 — Power Rangers doesn’t suddenly drop established relationships, and I doubt they’d drop Izzy’s (cause it’d be noticeable and look bad for them).

General Shaw returns to brief the rangers on a secret plan 💚 — Pretty much confirmed Commander Shaw is coming back, and if we’re going with the Zedd steals his staff back, I’d say it’s likely Grid Battleforce would play a role in retaliation.

There is going to be fight footage with all 6 MMPR ranger suits (I am guessing w/Zedd) 💛 — I mean, they do have them from last years crossover, so.. possibly.

Dino Fury rangers travel to Eltar with a portal machine; Portal Machine gets destroyed by MOTW ❤️ — combining these cause I don’t have much to say on this either.  

Dino Fury rangers travel to the moon using a Rafkon spaceship 💛 — I think it's either be this or the portal machine, I doubt they’d do both.

Villains will get a new base ❤️ — I don’t see why they’d change (from a production perspective) and if they did it’d probably be subtle differences over a whole new set (unless they do end up going to the moon..)

Dino Fury is pretty alright.

So I have been watching Dino Fury because I've heard about what's coming up in the next batch of episodes and really wanted to give it ago. I've struggled with the series since Saban brought the property back and Hasbro hasn't really impressed me much with their take so far. Beast Morphers is probably better than I give it credit for but I love Go-busters so I don't think it could ever live up to my dreams. Weirdly the one series I've enjoyed out of the neo saban era and Hasbro eras was Megaforce. Mostly because of Emma and Gia. (Which is why I'm so excited about the leak of what's happening with Izzy)

But Dino Fury is pretty fun so far. It reminds me a bit of the start of Dino Charge which I enjoyed the first season of. I find it weird how so far the Hasbro era has a lot of original fight footage but actually feels cheaper I don't know I think the Nickelodeon bright clean camera stuff is way too clean like it doesn't feel like it takes place in a real world it's almost sitcom like. The ADR is also pretty bad. It has been since the neo saban era it feels so half hearted and I don't think that's on the actors I think it's a direction and mixing issue.

But the title of this was why I liked it kinda. Well first I actually like the theme song. I know we haven't had anything but remixes of the Go Go power rangers theme since Samurai but I kinda like the electronic feel to this one. Evolution Revolution is a great lyric even if I am not fussed on how powerful the Dino Fury rangers actually are. I think they really have a great roster each character feels pretty defined and their focus episodes are really character and lesson focused. I've found that the moral at each episodes core are pretty solid. The highlight of the early epsiodes is Winning Attitude. Amazing guest star and a two really great lessons and growth for Izzy.

Ok back to some disconnected thoughts about the season. It's really weird how the Sporix just grow big by themselves. The formula of Power Rangers has them defeat the small version then they get a second chance. It's really effecting how useful the rangers feel on combat because they basically can never win without zords.

God there is a lot of teleporting in this show. Rangers teleport everywhere, villains teleport on and off screen all the time. Fights can feel really weird when the villains can just teleport away. Also it's super weird that the rangers teleport in unmorphed we assume they are keeping their identities secret why not morph before showing up. (This is not a problem exclusive to Dino Fury but the over use of teleporting really highlights it here)

Episode 6 and 7 have a direct connection in following up on a zord finder that Solon is making. Episode 6 is set up that it will help find the zord then at the opening of episode 7 it doesn't work. Ummm what was the point of this? I like how there has been a natural story progression over the first couple of episodes but this just felt pointless. It's kinda trying to do the thing that operation overdrive tires but less clue to clue and just carrying over story beats. Just weird where you set up a device that instantly doesn't work.

Buzzblast, what is it? Like is it a YouTube studio, is it a news station, is it a digital platform. Also what is Jane's job. She is sometimes the boss, sometimes the live editor, sometimes a reporter. Why does she need anyone else? They might have been better served building a small supporting cast of Buzzblast characters. I think this emblematic of the format that they stick too. You get the rangers and their mentor, guest star friends and relatives who might never appear again and two comedy characters.

I love the zords. I haven't been a huge fan of recent zord designs I love the go-busters zords and beast Morphers not making a combined cockpit for them was one of its biggest mistakes. But yeah I really like the way the zords fit together and how each zord can become the head piece with its out mode.

I forgot that Ninja Steel is in main continuity so that's a thing looking forward to Mick showing up (I really dislike Ninja Steel)

Yeah I am just throwing this out into the ether because they are thoughts floating around with nowhere to go.

Talon Ranger vs. Lord Drakkon

Ever since I first learned about the Talon Ranger – or in the comic universe the Dark Ranger – I was instantly hooked. 

Out of all the Dino Charge Rangers, he had the best design (the vivid red, blue, and yellow really put him in a league of his own), a weapon that he could play to summon his zord (not unlike the classic Green Ranger), and what would have been a great face turn from villain to hero. Arguably, this ranger is epitome of the of what Neo-Saban is supposed to represent and who better to a neo-version of than Green Ranger Tommy.

The aforementioned idea was only more solidified after reading Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers #35 which took full advantage of the comic exclusive aspect of the character and used it tell a character focused/origin issue that was very competent, compelling, and captivating as a story. The issue genuinely made me tear up as it chronicled Heckyl’s backstory of how he came to be the Dark Ranger, why he chose to answer Zordon’s call, his motivation for joining the soon to be Beyond the Grid team on their rescue mission, and the reason he carries this Guilt/Redemption complex so close to his core.

Honestly, I’m vexed because this issue and depiction of Heckyl’s character and past is so good I wish the Dark Ranger had actually interacted more with and combated against Lord Drakkon directly during Shattered Grid; there are so many parallels between the two characters, and it would have done wonders for both in terms of their core character traits.  Drakkon is the darkest reflection of Heckyl that’s “beyond redemption and second chances” while Heckyl is a glimmer of hope to Drakkon that is not too late to change; there could have been a literal mirror match between the warped version of THE classic Saban Power Ranger facing off against THE beacon of change Neo-Saban Power Ranger.

Granted, if that had happened, then I might not have gotten issue #35 which is the whole reason I would have wanted Higgins to use his morphenomenal craft on the character in the first place… Maybe someone will write/draw a good fanfic of it some day soon.

What are your thoughts on Super Sentai and Power Rangers? Which do you prefer? Which one is your favourite?

Growing up I did love Power Rangers. My favorite seasons were Dino Thunder, Jungle Fury, and Ninja Storm.

The Disney-era of PR just felt good to me. Back then they knew what there were doing imo. Different theme songs that still rocked your socks, and an adaption that's near faithful to the original only with a few changes here and there.

Don't get me wrong, I like the Neo-Saban era. Samurai and Dino Charge were my favorites. But I largely dislike the idea of Super seasons, and the fact that the Gokaiger adaption (Super Megaforce) should've been its own thing. Call it "Power Rangers Armada" or something.

Thankfully the PR feanchise is in Hasbro's hands now. Can't wait to see how Beast Morphers (Go-Busters) will be adapted. I sure hope they keep those quirky Buddyroids in too and not remove their voices/personalities... Like what Saban did with Power Rangers RPM by completely removing the personalities of the Engines.

Aaaas for Super Sentai, I discovered it and the whole Tokusatsu genre since 2012. Kept it a secret for a while, but I've embraced it later on. Kyoryuger (Dino Charge) was my favorite season because it was a really "out there" idea. Dinosaurs and Samba music aren't really things one would put together, but somehow Toei really pulled it off with that concept. (Blue Sky did it with their film Rio too, but that's another story).

So there you have it: my opinions on the colorful toku heroes.

For ninja steel, I'd love it if all the characters got their fair share of development, something dino charge was sort of lacking, but the same sort of fun vibe the other neo-saban seasons have had. (I'm nearly just as excited for all the creative stuff the fandom will do with new characters/stories etc!)

personally, i want ten focus episodes for hayley and the rest can deal but agreed, decent character development for everyone would be the best case scenario... maybe it’ll be better with only six rangers? although they keep casting all these extra side characters so who knows.

i know im SO excited to write fic again?? i know i still have prompts to do in my inbox but... i wanna write ninja steel fic... and gif ninja steel... it’s so close i can TASTE IT

The thing is, the Neo-Saban era used aliens too many times in their seasons.

From MMPR to Space, it was sort of a continous story, so keeping aliens as the main villains make sense and every season had a new villain that was different to the one before, so even if it was the same formula, the charisma was different.

Next was Lost Galaxy, it reused the aliens but now it was set in a space colony, so it gave a fresh look to things and the evolution of the villains over the series made it stand out.

After that, the villains became more diverse: demons, mutants, ancient spirits, dino-guys, magical monsters, evil robots,even when they used aliens it was sporadic and it feel original. Lothor was a human that was banished in space, an evil emperor in a futuristic city, the several villains in Operation Overdrive (quality of this one being not good). But the point is, it felt unique.

But then, when Saban re-bought Power Rangers, and after 2 seasons of Samurai with a weak big bad in terms of personality, people excepted something better. Then we get Megaforce and Super Megaforce, and the villains were really bland, generic evil alien conquerors that were always angry.

Dino Charge and Dino Super Charge were better recived (even if the finale wasn't as much) but the fact that we repeat aliens for another 2 seasons sting a little, even if the villains were better (Sledge and Heckyll).

Then we get the Ninja Steel and Super Ninja Steel seasons, once again aliens in a series seen as mediocre to okay.

8 season with aliens as villains, with several degress of quality.

It isn't only because "aliens again?" It's because most of this seasons really didn't try too much to spin the concept of alien invasion. Some try, but never reach their potential with the concepts they introduce (criminals seeking freedom or competitors in an alien tv show).

In the end, some people have their issues in the present with alien villains in PR because of the lack of variety in the use and presentation of the alien villains in the Neo-Saban seasons, but that doesn't means that Dino Fury will suffer from that.

We don't know why they are attacking, we don't know their organization, their members. We only know that they are aliens, we shouldn't judge them before we see them in action.

Funniest thing I’ve read in a long time. In response to the blurb about the new season Power Rangers, someone on Facebook complained “enough with the aliens, it’s overused.”

Why yes. Power Rangers uses alien invasions frequently. It’s almost like it’s a foundation of the series, going back to Mighty Morphin’...

Seriously, when you complain about Power Rangers using alien invasions as a plot point, you’re complaining to complain.
