Hi Tumblr I'm an Asian fantasy author fleeing the sudden death of all my other social media sites 👋 I've used Tumblr for years as a fandom lurker and rarely posted but in light of all my other communities imploding I guess I'll have to figure out how to be actually active on Tumblr and find bookish and writerly folks here 💜 say hi if that's you 🥺
If you love diverse filipino fantasy with bipoc leads, angry bi women clawing for space in a world that's always rejected them and soft boys who'd do anything for them, awesome elemental magic based on early Filipino shaman/ babaylan/katalonan mythologies and the Tagalog creation story, and the Bakunawa/Laho the 🇵🇭 sea dragon 🐉 and drowning colonizers then I hope you'll keep an eye out for SAINTS OF STORM AND SORROW coming in June 2024 from Titan Books

percy repeating that he can be good over and over again to himself while covered in the blood after an overwhelming unleash of volatile rage that destroyed all that threatened his loved ones while grover holds his face and steadily grounds him back to reality
("i'm safe, we're safe, it's safe, just breathe")
#grover underwood#percy jackson#grover looks past the violence because percy takes precedence and percy embraces the violence because grover takes precedence#like do you get it? do you get the sorrows of being an angry person trying so hard to be Good for the people you love and falling short#because you love too much and with your whole heart but your love is rage filled thing that you could never quite quell#(how do you fight a hurricane? how do you stop a tsunami? you can't. there's no outrunning the storm)#your love is a rage-filled thing and your love is strong and you would rather sacrifice yourself on a spit then be buried above their bones#and how fucking dare anyone try to threaten that#and now you are covered in someone else's blood and you are not Good (you never were you never were) and it's all you can do not to scream#(i can be Good i can be Good you say but the words are lies because you are a storm and who has ever looked to a storm as Good)#happy talks pjo

SAINTS OF STORM AND SORROW COCKTAILS
Cocktails inspired by the wonderful SAINTS OF STORM AND SORROW by Gabriella Buba!
An engrossing Filipino-inspired fantasy featuring vengeful gods and the people connected to them. Queer and complex and full of characters making difficult choices, it's a spectacular read.
So of course I had to make a trio of drinks, inspired by the three types of gods-blessed magic users in the story. Tide-touched, Firetender, and Stormcaller.
Tide-touched
A hint of oceanic flavor, topped with just a hint of sea foam.
- 2oz seaweed infused vodka*
- 1.25oz lime juice
- 1oz Cream of Coconut
- Sea salt (for rim)
Optional: one drop blue food coloring
* Soak kombu in vodka. I used 3 pieces of kombu (about 2"x3" each) in one cup of vodka and let sit for an hour or so before straining.
1) Rim a cocktail glass with sea salt
2) Shake all other ingredients together with ice
3) Strain into glass
Firetender
Heat and spice, with the tang of pomegranate.
- 2oz lightly-aged (gold) rum
- 1oz lemon juice
- 1/4tsp ginger syrup**
- 3/4oz grenadine***
- Pinch red pepper flakes to taste
** I use ginger syrup by Liber & Co, but you can make your own by lightly simmering chopped fresh ginger in equal amounts of sugar and water.
*** Use the real pomegranate stuff. You can make your own by heating equal parts sugar and 100% pomegranate juice on low heat until sugar dissolves completely.
1) Combine all in a shaker with ice
2) Shake well
3) Strain through a fine mesh strainer into a cocktail glass
Stormcaller
With the bright, sharp bite of lightning and a hint of earthy petrichor.
- 2oz mezcal
- 1tsp black peppercorns
- 5-6 leaves mint
- 1oz lemon juice
- 1oz simple syrup
1) Muddle peppercorns and mint in a cocktail shaker in the simple syrup
2) Add everything else plus ice
3) Shake well
4) Strain into a glass using a fine mesh strainer

Grief
Grief is a black cloud lurking above, it shadows all who we dearly love. One day it rains and drowns the soul and we lose that love and pay the toll.
Rain turns to storm and life withers away draining all the colour leaving nothing but grey. Oh, how we wish we could turn back time- to undo this remorse and break the paradigm.
Our tears fall like rain as we look back at all the memories now faded to black. But you will live on forever in my mind as I have no choice but to leave you behind.
In this storm I am trying to find a way out of this night and back into day where I can find sun and solace in life again and look back and smile from a place of zen.
I have done it once and I'll do it again, to be my strongest every now and then. Grief is a journey so very long and slow but even in storms, new seeds can grow.

Percy meeting Nico and realizing that he and Hazel are siblings. Suddenly there's this. Discomfort. And... guilt? He doesn't know why. But as the quest begins and the trio battle through perils, every time Hazel faces down a threat, no matter how trivial, his nervous system goes into overdrive.
I can't fail Nico again, he thinks each time. But he doesn't know why. Can't recall the memories that accompany the sense of fear and shame bubbling up from inside him.
He wonders if this is why Nico lied. Did he fail him? Betray the poor kid? Is that why Nico would rather pretend they don't know each other? What did he do? What does it have to do with Hazel? He doesn't know. But. Surely, he thinks, if he keeps Hazel safe, delivers her to Nico in one piece, then they'll be square this time. The stubborn guilt from whatever he didn't do last time will go away.
#hazel levesque#nico di angelo#bianca di angelo#percy jackson#happy talks pjo#it doesn't go away. of course it doesn't. it never will.#nico could swear on the styx herself that he does not begrudge percy for bianca's death. that he's moved. that it wasn't percy fault.#and percy will still cling to it like a piece of driftwood at sea in a storm#even when bianca's name no longer leaves nico aching. just a small sense of sadness rhat always accompanies loss and grief#her name will fill percy with a dread and sorrow he will never be able to move on from

Hi so I decided to read @inkcurlsandknives book Saints of Storm and Sorrow and I'm seriously not okay.
The premise of this book intrigued me immensely, and when I eagerly started reading it, I kept a notebook next to me so I could write down any quotes that stood out to me or thoughts I had along the way. But this notebook was quickly forgotten as I was completely swept up in this book, and my desire to know what happens next? While reading, I had to fight from stimming, gasping, and otherwise loudly reacting in public. When I continued reading in private, tears started dripping from my eyes at some point around the climax, from a combination of emotion and the fact that I had been so desperate to keep reading that I had strained my eyes until they watered.
This book is incredible. It is gorgeously, evocatively written in a way that inspires me to add even more detail into my own writing. The world created in this book is heavily drawn from our own, and is as deep as the ocean itself. Saints is also unafraid to dive into the darkest depths of humanity, and explore the complexities of pain. Seriously, I can’t state enough how morally gray everything and everyone is, making for a wildly compelling and thought-provoking cast. If anyone wants to gush about this book more in depth, I’d be happy to.
#please read this book it almost made me cry in public#I can count the number of books that have done that on one hand#there were certain aspects of it that resonated with me in a deeply personal way#not publicly disclosing what they are because of privacy reasons#but just know that it did#anyway yeah I am like in awe of this book#other people's writing#saints of storm and sorrow#does this count as a book review?

"Go to a Stormcaller for vengeance, for they do not heal and they do not save."
Lunurin, the bisexual nun wreaking vengeance on colonisers from Saints of Storm and Sorrow by @inkcurlsandknives aka Gabriella Buba!
This book is based on Filipino history and mythology, described by Gabriella as "Avatar the Last Airbender if the protagonist wasn't a pacifist", and if you need more persuasion (I didn't, but then I found this fact out and bought the book twice) the male lead's POV chapters are voiced by Dante Basco AKA Zuko in the audiobook (only available on Spotify afaik).
me 🤝 alon
weak for angry girls with lightning hair and sharp teeth
I am *definitely* still getting used to drawing on this tablet but having fun with it, so I'm posting along the way - I normally post at @harleyartley but I've reblogged a bunch of stuff about Saints so I thought I'd post this on main. Pray for Tumblr not messing up image quality, and that colours are... Not fucked up in between monitors. 🙏

Sleep Like Death: Kalynn Bayron returns to fairytales with a lush, thrilling and original YA Snow White retelling
We Shall Be Monsters: Frankenstein meets Indian mythology in this twisty, darkly atmospheric fantasy where the horror is not the monsters you face but the ones you create.
What I Would Do to You: The death penalty is back. But if the victim’s family wants the perpetrator to die, they have to do it themselves. Twenty-four hours alone in a room with the condemned. No cameras. No microphones.
You're Safe Here: Wellness, motherhood, and technology converge in a future California as three women’s seemingly innocuous decisions have consequences greater than they could imagine.
