how to combine coupons with store savings w/out making it a full time job
Today I went to the grocery store and saved a bit over 30%, with about 30 min of prep the night before...I think that's pretty awesome. ok so here is how it works. Start with your newspaper inserts (or your neighbor's or co-workers, whoever is willing to give you them) and clip the coupons that you want, then go online and "clip" the coupons that you want and finally collect your catalinas you've gotten from previous grocery trips. Hopefully you've organized them into separate categories (as this makes it easier to find the ones that your looking for). Then pull out your circular for your local grocery store. If you don't get it sent to you then you can alway look it up online. Now it's time for a matching game!!
Going section by section in the circular look and see what deals you want and if you have coupons to match it. I try to match my coupons as soon as possible b/c you don't want your coupon to expire! This will be the way to get the most bang for your buck...aka most savings. When going to the grocery store I keep my coupons in an envelope that I know I can get deals with from the circular, so i'm not going through and scrambling at the checkout. However, I do always carry my small, but organized to-go accordian folder in case there are deals that weren't in the circular so it will be easy for me to track down the coupon I need and put them with the rest of the coupons i'll be using at checkout.
For example: If Brand X bars usually retails for $2.50 a box and is on sale for 2/$4 then that means you will save $1/2 boxes or $.50 a box. Now, if you have a coupon for Brand X that is $1 off a box of Brand X, then you can combine the store savings with the coupon and get 2 boxes for $3. Originally you would have paid $5 for 2 boxes, but you saved $2 combining both the store savings and coupons.
or in easier visual terms:
Brand X: $2.50/box
Brand X deal: 2 boxes/$4 or each box is $2
Brand X coupon: $1 off a box of Brand X
Coupon with store deal: 2 boxes for $4 (store deal) - $1 (coupon)=$3 for two boxes
Example 2->doubling: let's say that Brand X was a coupon for $.75 off a box instead of $1.00 off. That $.75 might actually be worth more money through doubling. Doubling means that the store with double the value of the coupon, and in this case it would be worth $1.50 and 2 boxes of Brand X would cost $2.50 instead of the retail price of $5.00 (that's 50% savings!!!). First rule in doubling...check your store's coupon policy. Often you can only double on coupons up to $.99 and you often can't combine coupons. Also if a coupon says not subject to doubling, as the catalina's often say, then the coupon can't be doubled.
Brand X: $2.50/box
Brand X deal: 2 boxes/$4 or each box is $2
Brand X coupon: $.75 off a box of Brand X
Brand X coupon doubles: $1.50 off a box of Brand X
Coupon with store deal: 2 boxes for $4 (store deal) - $1.50 (coupon)=$2.50 for two boxes
I know this might seem like a lot of math, but it's a great way to sharpen those mental math or calculator skills...and over time you learn how to do this really fast, and saving time saves $$$
Good news for dieters...there are often foods that are actually healthy for you that you can get through coupons...FiberOne has a lot of coupons out there, there are some soy/almond milk products with coupons, laughing cow cheese wedges, greek yogurt...These are all healthy foods that you don't have to pay retail price for!! Just put in about 30 min a week...that's all you need to save you some big bucks...And although fresh produce savings doesn't come in coupon form, frozen ones often do and they last a lot longer, also there are sometimes catalina's that say something like spend $20 in the produce section and get $5 off your next transaction...Still an awesome deal, given that being the savvy shopper that you are you are already saving $$ in produce from the circular deals.
Coupon recipe: Tuna melt! (300 cal)
What you'll need:
-2 slices of light bread (pepperidge farm coupon)
-1 5 oz can Tuna packed in water (bumble bee coupon)
-2 laughing cow cheese wedges (from laughing cow coupon)
-1 tbsp fat free mayo (using hellman's coupon)
-1 tsp dijon mustard
-lettuce, tomato, 1 tbsp diced celery, 3 shredded baby carrots
Let's put it together:
1. Spread a wedge of cheese on each slice of bread, then put in toaster to desired crispness
2. In a bowl, mix the drained tuna, celery, carrots, mustard, and mayo, can add pepper if desired or cayenne for a spicy kick
3. put tuna on top of one slice of the bread, then the lettuce and tomato, then put the other piece of bread on top for your ubber delish tuna melt! If too messy to eat, then eat it as two open face sandwiches.
