Top 5 Benefits of Store Locators for Your Business
Tumblr media
In today’s competitive market, a store locator is essential for businesses aiming to enhance their customer experience and increase sales. With the help of a user-friendly store locator map, businesses can guide customers to their nearest locations effortlessly. A customer can not only find good information about the products but also about their business, everything from great photos to addresses and phone numbers of all the local stores. A customer will surely like this because it saves time and allows him to quickly find the information he needs.
What is a Store Locator?
In the digital age, businesses must adapt to meet the evolving needs of their customers. One such adaptation is the implementation of a store locator. A store locator is a tool, typically integrated into a business's website or mobile app, that helps customers find the nearest physical store locations. By entering their current location or zip code, customers can quickly discover the closest stores, along with details such as contact information, operating hours, and directions.
Store locators often come with interactive maps, which further simplify the search process and enhance the user experience. For businesses with multiple locations, a store locator is an invaluable tool that bridges the gap between online browsing and in-store shopping, providing a seamless transition for customers.
How Can a Store Locator Help a Business and Why Does It Matter?
In an era where convenience is king, a store locator offers a significant value-add for businesses and customers alike. For businesses, it serves as a vital link between their online presence and physical stores, driving foot traffic and boosting in-store sales. When customers can easily find and visit a store, they are more likely to make a purchase, leading to increased revenue.
Moreover, a store locator enhances the customer experience by providing a hassle-free way to find store locations. This ease of use not only increases customer satisfaction but also fosters loyalty and repeat business. According to a study by the National Retail Federation, 83% of shoppers prefer to visit a store in person if it’s conveniently located. Therefore, providing a reliable store locator can directly impact a business’s bottom line by ensuring customers have the information they need at their fingertips.
Additionally, store locators offer businesses valuable insights into customer behavior. By analyzing search patterns and location data, businesses can make informed decisions about store placements, marketing strategies, and inventory management. This data-driven approach allows businesses to optimize their operations and better meet customer needs.
Top 5 Benefits of Store Locators
1. Increased Foot Traffic
One of the most immediate benefits of implementing a store locator is the increase in foot traffic to physical store locations. When customers can quickly and easily find the nearest store, they are more likely to visit.
According to the International Council of Shopping Centers (ICSC), 90% of retail sales still occur in physical stores, underscoring the importance of driving customers to brick-and-mortar locations. A store locator can significantly boost foot traffic by providing customers with convenient access to store information, thereby encouraging them to visit in person.
2. It will Enhance Customer Satisfaction
Customer satisfaction is a critical component of business success, and a store locator plays a crucial role in achieving it. A store locator provides a user-friendly interface that allows customers to find store locations effortlessly, leading to a positive shopping experience. When customers can quickly locate a store, they are more likely to feel satisfied with their overall experience.
According to a survey by PwC, 73% of consumers say that a good experience is a key factor in influencing their brand loyalties. Therefore, a well-designed store locator can enhance customer satisfaction and build long-term loyalty.
3. It will Help in Improving Local SEO and Online Visibility
A store locator can also improve a business’s online visibility and local search engine optimization (SEO). By integrating a store locator into their website, businesses can leverage local keywords and optimize their content for local searches. This means that when potential customers search for stores in their area, the business is more likely to appear in the search results.
According to Google, 46% of all searches have a local intent, highlighting the importance of local SEO. By improving their online visibility, businesses can attract more customers and drive traffic to their physical stores.
4. More Precise Data-Driven Insights
Store locators provide businesses with valuable data and insights into customer behavior. By analyzing search patterns, location data, and user interactions with the store locator, businesses can gain a better understanding of their customers’ needs and preferences. This data can inform various aspects of business operations, from marketing strategies to inventory management.
For example, if a significant number of searches come from a specific area, it might indicate a high demand for a new store location in that area. Utilizing these insights can lead to more informed business decisions and better overall performance.
5. Cost-Effective Marketing Tool
Implementing a store locator is a cost-effective way to enhance marketing efforts and reach a broader audience. Unlike traditional marketing methods that can be expensive and time-consuming, a store locator provides a continuous, automated solution for directing customers to store locations. Additionally, it can be integrated with other marketing campaigns, such as email marketing or social media promotions, to further drive traffic and engagement.
According to HubSpot, businesses that prioritize SEO and inbound marketing see 61% lower cost per lead than those using outbound marketing. A store locator is a valuable addition to any marketing strategy, offering a high return on investment with minimal ongoing costs.
Conclusion
In conclusion, a store locator is an essential tool for modern businesses looking to enhance customer experience, drive foot traffic, and optimize operations. By providing customers with an easy way to find store locations, businesses can improve customer satisfaction, boost sales, and gain valuable insights into customer behavior. The benefits of a store locator extend beyond simple convenience, offering significant value-adds that can impact a business’s success and growth. As the retail landscape continues to evolve, implementing a store locator can help businesses stay competitive and meet the changing needs of their customers.

By integrating a store locator plugin into your WordPress website, customers can effortlessly find your store locations, access essential information like operating hours, and get accurate directions—all from the convenience of their mobile devices.
What is a Store Locator Plugin?
A store locator plugin enables businesses to display a list of their physical locations on their website, often with interactive maps and filtering options. For WordPress users, these plugins are straightforward to install and customize, ensuring seamless user experience. Customers can search for the nearest store, get directions, and even learn about the services available at each location.
Why Every Retailer Needs One
Improved Customer Experience: A store locator plugin makes it easy for customers to find the nearest store and view essential details, enhancing their shopping experience.
Better SEO: Search engines favor websites that provide users with practical and valuable information. A store locator plugin adds local SEO benefits, helping your locations rank higher in search results.
Increased Foot Traffic: By enabling customers to find stores more easily, these plugins can help drive traffic to your brick-and-mortar locations, leading to higher sales and conversions.

how would a complete complete beginner get into gpose? like how to make npcs appear and pose my oc with them?
love your blorbos and the triad and your gposes and writing btw. thank you and pls keep creating <333
Hi, anon! Thank you so much, that's so sweet 💜
So, I may have gotten a little carried away, but I wanted to be thorough responding and I thank you for your patience. This is going under a readmore out of courtesy to the dashboard.
To start out you'll need to download some stuff.
Programs
Anamnesis:
Install: download
This is an entirely self-contained program, and you could technically stop here and do all your posing from Anamnesis, I know several people who prefer it. It’s perfect for posing with humanoid models, minions, and mob creatures.
The biggest downside is that if you don’t have a second monitor (or have a really small screen like I do), it’s going to get in the way of a lot of your posing. It gets pretty fiddly having to readjust the camera around the doll and move the screen aside so you can see what you’re doing. So if that’s going to be an issue for you, I would also recommend using….
Ktisis:
Install: download
You will also need to install the FFXIVQuicklauncher, which is linked in the Ktisis instructions. It’s a bit more work to set up, but if you think you’ll want to try out using mods, Penumbra works on the same framework and this will save you a bit of hassle later on.
Ktisis operates within gpose from a little dropdown bar on the side of your screen, and the biggest difference is that it puts the skeleton directly over the models in 3D instead of a flat view. It does still have a flat view option, but I am much more 3D oriented so having the skeleton visible right under my cursor works better for me. It’s also helpful for showing all the special bones on monsters and bosses that Anam doesn’t!
I am also currently using the testing build version of Ktisis as it offers the ability to select multiple bones at a time, which I don’t believe the current public release has. This can be turned on by right clicking on the plugin and selecting “receive plugin testing versions”.
There is a third posing program called Brio, and it requires the same level of install as Ktisis, but I personally don’t like using it. I find the posing interface unwieldy and at a beginner level, it really cannot offer you anything that Anamnesis and Ktisis already don’t. The only thing it would be absolutely necessary for is to spawn in actors through Anamnesis.
So now that we’ve got the programs installed, time to get some actors in here.
Importing Characters
You can get characters into gpose one of two ways. You can rock it old school and load a character file onto a pre-existing model, or you can spawn a new one digitally within gpose.
Old School Method:
Use an overworld model! I’m just going to borrow this Temple Knight real quick-
Tumblr media Tumblr media
-and now I have successfully freed Aymeric from his office. Time for a lunch date!
If you don’t have any overworld models to use, like in instanced areas such as dungeons, you can use a carbuncle instead.
Using the powers of arcanima-
Tumblr media Tumblr media
-I have now brought Estinien into the realm of the Fuath. And he thought the moogles were bad...
New School Method:
In the Ktisis testing workspace, there’s a little plus icon at the bottom left hand corner.
Tumblr media
“Create new actor” will make a clone of your model with all the same gear and physical appearances. You can then load a character file onto that of your choice, or you can customise it from there. “Import actor from file” will skip right ahead to loading in a premade character file you’ve saved as it spawns a new model.
Importing/Exporting Character Files
Character files are how your appearance, gear, and weapons are all stored to be loaded in onto an actor. These will appear in your program save files as a .chara file. Anamnesis and Ktisis should create their own save files and will automatically save character and pose information to those locations. You can also check to see that they saved correctly by opening up your files directory and tracing the file paths.
In the “Character” tab in Anamnesis, select the actor of your choice, hit “Import”, and select your file. The dropdown menu gives you some options for what specific parts of a character file you want to import. There’s also the option to import game NPCs.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In Ktisis, right click the actor and select “Import…” then “Character”.
Tumblr media
This will bring up the import screen, where you have the same choice between files saved to your computer or NPCs from the game.
Tumblr media
Changing Gear
Changing gear can be done through Anamnesis simply by clicking on the item slot in the appearance tab, and you’ll get a list of everything that can be equipped into that slot. Ktisis will require you to right click on an actor and select “Edit appearance” before giving you a similar menu.
This is one of Anamnesis’ biggest selling points because it has the most robust gear filtering and search system of the three posing programs. You can filter by class, job, race/genderlocked gear, items that are Mogstation purchases, and save favourites to the top of each list.
Tumblr media
Ktisis and Brio do not have this feature, so I really recommend doing all of your gear searching through Anamnesis unless you know exactly what the gear piece is called.
If you change your mind mid-pose that you want a different piece of gear, changing the equipment in Ktisis will not break the pose, but trying through Anamnesis will.
Posing
Now that you’ve got your dolls in place, it’s time to actually start posing! Like I said above, Anamnesis is mostly a flat view of the skeleton, and Ktisis has the skeleton visible in 3D on the model, so choose which format works with your brain easiest. (And they both can swap formats as well.)
The red/blue/green gizmo is the same across all three posing programs, and comes in three modes; rotate, position, and scale. Body bones will all be manipulated through rotation. Scaling can be done if you want to change how a body part looks and is especially helpful for fixing elbows. Facial bones, however, will need to be moved in position mode due to the new graphical update. And this is really why I recommend you use Ktisis testing build as this gives you the ability to select multiple bones at once to move in tandem.
The easiest way to start learning to pose is by modifying the existing emotes and actions. Cycle through the various emotes and job actions to find something that gets you close to what you want, and then make minor tweaks from there. It’s not impossible to pose from a base standing idle, but it is a pain and takes a lot longer.
Before you can start repositioning bones, you’ll need to toggle “Posing Mode” on. In Anamnesis, this is in the “Pose” tab, and in Ktisis it’s the red/green toggle at the top. You’ll also need to pause character movement in gpose (freeze character).
If you plan on moving models around in the XYZ coordinates instead of leaving them where they are in gpose (especially since the digital actors will spawn directly on top of you), you will need to freeze positions as well. This is found in the top right corner of the “Action” tab in Anamnesis.
Tumblr media
In Ktisis, the "Freeze Positions" button is under the character editor. Right click on your character, choose "Edit appearance", then under the animation tab (third from the left), check "Freeze Positions".
Tumblr media
Importing/Exporting Poses
Another place where Ananmesis shines is having all of the vanilla pose variations for all of the races and genders available as pose files to be uploaded. This is in the second file button, underneath the list of your original files.
Tumblr media
Note: All default expressions currently in Anamnesis are out of date. Take the time to go through the expressions in gpose and save each face individually to be loaded on separately as expressions.
This is the same process as importing/exporting characters. Poses will be saved as a .pose file to the program of your choice. If you’ve downloaded pre-made poses from someone else, make sure they’re in the program files and not your downloads folder just to keep everything in one place.
Note: Pose files from before Dawntrail will break expressions. These should only be imported on body bones.
Loading Select Bones
You can piece together new poses using bits of old ones, too! In Ananmesis, click and drag to highlight the parts you want to transfer (it can be a little finnicky around the hands/hips.)
Tumblr media
And in Ktisis, right click select down the list of bones you want to use.
Tumblr media
Expressions will always need to be loaded onto a model as selected bones. Anamnesis has the “Expression” option, which will automatically select all the bones on the head parent.
Tumblr media
Ktisis will need to have the “Face” option ticked on the “Import Pose” if you’re importing from the actor’s name. If you’ve clicked the parent you want to apply it to, it will automatically tick “Apply selected bones”.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The ideal order of operations is Load Actors > Load Gear > Posing Mode.
Miscellaneous Tips and Tricks
-Ktisis lets you import reference images now! In the same place as importing a new character, you can import a reference image to be on the screen with you instead of tabbing between the game and browser.
-If you like the pose you get while riding a particular mount and think “wow I wish I could have that as a normal sit pose” you can just fire up your program of choice, freeze motion, and save the bones! My personal fave is the sit from the hippo cart mount.
-Don’t rotate your model from the root bone (the one that’s named after the actor), rotate from the abdomen. This will still move your whole actor without compromising the XYZ alignment. Think of the root bone as the little plastic support stand for an action figure you’d put on a shelf. You can pose the action figure however you want, but the plastic stand still has to stay touching the table.
~
That’s it for what I would consider getting started with. A lot of this is stuff I’ve had to learn myself or piecemeal together from various people, so I hope it’s not too overwhelming, but if I can save someone else the hassle I went through then I will!
My final piece of advice is to remember that this is supposed to be fun. If it’s starting to become not fun, take a break and do something else that isn’t gposing for a bit and come back to it.
Wishing you the best of luck in your gposing journey!

Note
Ooo if people are looking for note taking recommendations I recommend Obsidian! It's a program that lets you make directories for your notes and link them up really easily. I've been using it to keep track of my own games for a while now and it's really handy! I can store all my notes for my cats in one file, moons in another, etc, and interlink them so I can make sure I'm keeping track of events or locations. The ttrpg community have been singing its praises for a while now, it's really good for roleplay. There's an app, loads of plugins, and it's even free!
Posting this for anyone who wants a good notes program, I've not used it myself but I've heard of it before!

Website Uptime Monitoring and Management
In today’s digital age, having a website that is always available and accessible is crucial for businesses and organizations. A website downtime can lead to missed opportunities, loss of revenue, and damage to a company’s reputation. This is where website uptime monitoring and management come into play.
Tumblr media
What is Website Uptime Monitoring?
Website uptime monitoring refers to the process of regularly checking the availability and performance of a website. It involves using specialized tools and services to monitor the website’s uptime and promptly alert the website owner or administrator if any downtime or performance issues are detected.
Website uptime monitoring services typically work by periodically sending requests to the website from multiple locations around the world. These requests simulate real user visits and check if the website responds correctly. If a problem is detected, such as the website being down or loading slowly, the monitoring service sends an alert through various communication channels like email, SMS, or push notifications.
Benefits of Website Uptime Monitoring
Implementing a robust website uptime monitoring system offers several benefits:
1. Minimizing Downtime:
Website downtime can occur due to various reasons, such as server issues, network problems, or software glitches. With uptime monitoring, you can quickly identify and address these issues before they escalate, minimizing the impact of downtime on your business.
2. Protecting Revenue and Reputation:
A website that is frequently down or slow to load can lead to frustrated visitors and potential customers abandoning your site. This directly affects your revenue and can harm your reputation. By proactively monitoring your website’s uptime, you can ensure a seamless user experience and maintain a positive brand image.
3. Tracking Performance Metrics:
Uptime monitoring services provide valuable insights into your website’s performance metrics. You can track metrics such as response time, average uptime, and downtime duration. These metrics help you identify trends, set benchmarks, and make data-driven decisions to improve your website’s performance.
4. SEO and Search Rankings:
Website downtime can negatively impact your search engine rankings. Search engines like Google prioritize websites that provide a reliable and uninterrupted user experience. Consistent uptime ensures that search engine crawlers can access and index your site properly, positively impacting your SEO efforts.
Website Uptime Management
Website uptime management goes beyond just monitoring and involves proactive steps to optimize and maintain your website’s availability. Here are some essential aspects of website uptime management:
1. Reliable Web Hosting:
Choosing a reliable web hosting provider is crucial for ensuring maximum uptime. Look for hosting providers that offer high availability, redundant infrastructure, and strong security measures. Additionally, consider the scalability of the hosting solution to accommodate your website’s growth.
2. Regular Maintenance and Updates:
Performing regular maintenance tasks, such as updating software, plugins, and security patches, is essential for keeping your website secure and stable. Outdated software can introduce vulnerabilities that could lead to downtime or compromise the integrity of your website.
3. Load Testing and Performance Optimization:
Conduct regular load testing to ensure your website can handle increased traffic without slowing down or crashing. Performance optimization techniques, such as caching, content delivery networks (CDNs), and code optimizations, can significantly improve your website’s speed and reliability.
4. Disaster Recovery and Backup Plans:
Prepare for the worst-case scenarios
by implementing robust disaster recovery and backup plans. Regularly back up your website’s data, databases, and configurations, and store them in secure off-site locations. This ensures that you can quickly restore your website in case of any unforeseen incidents.
Conclusion
Website uptime monitoring and management are vital for ensuring a reliable and high-performing online presence. By proactively monitoring your website’s uptime, you can address issues promptly, protect your revenue and reputation, and improve your overall user experience. Combine this with effective website uptime management practices to maximize the availability and stability of your website. Remember, a website that is always up and running is a key ingredient for success in today’s digital landscape.

How Cloudflare Can Improve the Performance and Security of Your WordPress Website
If you run a WordPress website, you know the importance of ensuring that it performs well and is secure. One tool that can help with both of these goals is Cloudflare, a content delivery network (CDN) and web security platform. In this post, we'll explain how Cloudflare can improve the performance and security of your WordPress website, and provide step-by-step instructions on how to set it up.
Tumblr media
How Cloudflare Improves Performance
A CDN is a network of servers that are located at various points around the world. When a visitor accesses a website that is using a CDN, the CDN will serve the website's content from the server that is closest to the visitor, reducing the physical distance between the server and the visitor and therefore improving the website's performance.
Cloudflare has a large network of data centers, which means it can deliver content to visitors with high speed and low latency. In addition, Cloudflare's caching capabilities allow it to store copies of a website's static content, such as images and CSS files, on its servers. This means that when a visitor accesses the website, the static content can be served from Cloudflare's servers rather than the website's own server, reducing the load on the website's server and improving the website's performance.
To set up Cloudflare for your WordPress website, you will need to sign up for a Cloudflare account and follow the prompts to add your website. Once your website is added, you can choose the performance and security settings that best suit your needs.
How Cloudflare Enhances Security
In addition to improving performance, Cloudflare also enhances the security of a WordPress website. There are many potential security threats that a WordPress website may face, including DDoS attacks and malware.
Cloudflare serves as a buffer between the internet and a website, helping to protect the website from these types of threats. Cloudflare's threat intelligence system can identify and block malicious traffic before it reaches the website, and its web application firewalling feature can protect against vulnerabilities in the website's code.
To further enhance the security of your WordPress website when using Cloudflare, you can enable two-factor authentication for your Cloudflare account and keep your WordPress plugins and themes up to date.
Conclusion
In summary, Cloudflare is a powerful tool that can improve the performance and security of your WordPress website. By using a CDN and implementing security measures such as threat intelligence and web application firewalling, Cloudflare can help ensure that your website is fast, reliable, and secure. If you haven't already done so, consider setting up Cloudflare for your WordPress website to reap the benefits.

hi, sorry for bothering! I was wondering if you had a guide or anything for help ripping hi fi rush's files? I just got the game myself n wanted to dig around!
hi! no problem, i'd love to help! full disclaimer though: i dont know much about how Unreal Engine ripping works, i just googled all this stuff and managed to get it to work somehow 💀
you can rip the files using a tool called quickbms. you'll also need:
a .bms script compatible with Unreal Engine 4.27 (i found one called unreal_tournament_4_0.4.27d_paks_only.bms online and it worked for me, but from what i understood any 4.27 script is fine)
the game's AES key (i'd rather not share it here directly, but if you look up "hi fi rush quickbms" the first search result is a forum that has keys for both the Steam and Xbox game pass versions)
download quickbms, unpack the zip, run quickbms_4gb_files.exe and then:
select the .bms script
select Hibiki-WindowsNoEditor.pak located in ...\Hi-Fi RUSH\Hibiki\Content\Paks (if you don't know where this folder is, go to your Steam library, right click HFR -> manage -> browse local files)
select an output folder
enter the AES key
it will now rip everything and when it's done you can view pretty much every type of file EXCEPT music and sound effects. those are stored in the WwiseAudio folder and you'll need additional tools (e.g. foobar2000 with the vgmstream plugin) to actually be able to listen to them.
hope this helps !

Happy WBW!
I'd like to know more about mods? What are some of the things they do? How common are they? How did the practice start? Is there any taboo associated with them?
Happy WBW! Mods are incredibly versatile and can be used for all kinds of things. Some of the most common include increased processing speed, personal embedded cameras, heightening of various senses, and connectors for plugging into screens and doing work faster.
There are also "pop mods," which include fun things like little screens that change colors or images based on mood, embedded makeup and tattoos that move or flash, ones that allow you to plug in nutrient packs instead of remembering to eat, that let you see normally underwater, see in infrared, browse the future-internet inside your head, etc.
For practical mods to improve work performance, or even to improve sensory input, they've been around a while so they're normalized across groups of people and no one except maybe a small anti-tech faction (which I'm sure exists but isn't directly related to the story I'm telling). For pop mods, some older or more traditional people might disapprove because of the lack of necessity and the flashiness, but in the mainstream culture they're not any weirder than wearing a sequined skirt or crop top might be now.
These mods are regulated by an agency similar to the FDA. The agency was set up due to safety concerns, to be sure that mods are properly tested. This also means that if there are concerns that come up later they're able to contact people, replace or remove mods, send updates, etc. But this had a not-entirely-unintended secondary consequence. The mods are sold at apple-style stores by a handful of large corporations, who by this point have full and inherent rights to all collected data, which in the case of mods can mean videos of peoples' lives, complete browsing histories, bio-data, location data, and more. The government also has access to this data, the only restriction being that they have to ask after a specific person of interest instead of just browsing the data.
There are plenty of people who hate this system, and thus a thriving black market has been running for a long time. Some of them run out of tattoo-style shops, very professional and set up either through bribing officials or in carefully selected areas where they're the least of enforcement's concern. Others work on the street or by appointment by word of mouth. They offer all the same types of mods as the official ones, but there are also options that haven't been approved by the agency, including everything from universal-plugins (allowing one to basically hack any unprotected tech) to growing plants out of your skin to various mental games to pushing processing speeds and other work-improving functions beyond approved limits. Statistically, most of these are safe and in good faith, HOWEVER some are glitchy, only some modders will do later maintenance, and some are malicious and will load malware onto their tech to steal data, spy, or cause purposeful glitches.
And yes, I definitely just made 80% of that up but it has helped me work out how the modding system works, so thank you so much!

I lead a project to re-platform a the Cooking School segment of our business. The previous platform was an expensive, home-grown, unreliable, and devoid of web/event best-practices. There were very few opportunities for customers to trip and fall across this portion of our business.
For a grocery store, a Cooking School is not an obvious portion of our business. It was unrealistic to customers to know to go to a grocery store website to find out about cooking classes. We needed a platform that put our school and classes in front of customers who had not previously considered our service as a thing to do.
We researched three platform options: WordPress + Plugins, Eventbrite, and building another home-grown system. We chose Eventbrite based on costs, potential sales, ease of use, integration options, best-in-class presentation, SEO advantages, and speed to market.
The project began with a single test location and rolled out to all 12 locations. Plans were developed and executed to transition to the new platform.
A major goal was to expand reach. We carefully built user journey's for customers starting the flagship site, on Eventbrite, on Facebook, Google My Business, and organic search, to encourage conversions.
We also partnered with another vendor to build a custom presentation layer to both utilize the user functionality of Eventbrite, but aligning to the companies brand standards.
Overall, we improved: admin usability, sales, user experience, and expanded reach.

The narrative here is a bit more complex than you're giving it credit for. What I'm about to say is not meant to defend or accuse anyone here, just to set the record straight. Ads annoy the shit out of me too, but there's a reason we've started seeing so many of them.
First of all: The Internet is not free. I'm sorry, but it's not. Hosting video on the Internet in particular is extremely not free. Servers cost money, IT folks and developers cost money, memory costs a loooot of money, bandwidth costs money, and on the scale at which YouTube operates in order to serve you and billions of other people 4K 60fps video the instant you click a link, all over the world? The ELECTRICITY to keep the servers powered on is a significant amount of money. This money has to come from somewhere.
The traditional structure under which the tech industry has operated for a long time has been venture capital. You have a great idea for an app but no funding? You go talk to some guy in Palo Alto who is richer than God and makes his money make more money by loaning it to folks whose ideas he thinks will be profitable long-term. He gives you the money you need to get your app big enough to get noticed; the app is bought by a larger company on the assumption it will be able to help them profit (or, very rarely, taken to an IPO); and the money earned in this sale or IPO is used to pay the venture capital guy back with interest and (sometimes) make you rich enough to join him.
This is what happened with YouTube. Like a surprising number of early social media sites, they started as a more complex take on a dating site, but quickly pivoted direction when they realized there was a much larger market on the 2005 internet that would respond to "we will host your videos for free." (see paragraph 2. For those who don't remember the 2005 internet - being able to download 30 second clips of 240p video meant you were living pretty high on the hog. Anything longer that wasn't a torrent was probably a Flash animation - recreated by your computer using a set of assets and instructions and a specialized plugin that ran in your browser, rather than downloaded frame by frame and assembled into video.) Google bought them in 2008 and - here's the thing - has run the division at a loss since then.
So - While the vast majority of tech startups have a sale to a larger company as an end goal, there is that small percentage that make an IPO and start publicly trading on the stock exchange instead. These are your Googles and your Facebooks, the companies which will be buying the smaller startups that are looking to sell. The folks who run these companies largely grew up in the 80s and 90s when Walmart and other big box stores were marching across the US swallowing every independent competitor, and their business model borrows a lot from Walmart:
- Find a market you think will be profitable (for Walmart this is a geographical location; for a tech company it's a new - or newly acquired - service)
- Deliberately operate at a loss in this market until you have driven the competition out of business or created a barrier to entry so high that no competition would be stupid enough to challenge you. (For Walmart, this meant offering a far wider range of product than the local general store or five and dime, as well as hardware, furniture, entertainment, etc. at rock bottom "rollback" prices until all of those stores in the area closed. For this tech example, it's hosting video - and so much of it, at such high quality - that the idea of looking anywhere other than YouTube for independently made, free to watch, long form content is basically a punchline. Where are you gonna go - Vimeo?)
- Then and only then, start extracting the actual price for the product from the consumer. (For Walmart this meant jacking up prices, lowering the production quality of the house brands, and ceasing to offer some products which didn't sell well even if they were the only retailer in the area that still sold them. For tech companies it means subscription models and - more importantly, since people who are used to getting something for free won't be happy to start paying for it - nightmarish amounts of ads and paid content, and ever-tightening restrictions on getting around them.)
- Turn a profit or back out of the venture (by closing the store or sunsetting the service).
YouTube is at stage 3 and has been for a while now. Google would like for them to be a profitable stage 4. Unfortunately for Google, there is so much precious data on YouTube now that even they could not escape sunsetting it with their reputation intact, so they only have one path out of 3.
The pandemic changed the Internet a LOT. Far more education, socialization, entertainment, etc. occurs there now than pre-2020. Stockholders are expecting dividends that reflect this. My guess would be that this has led Google to see how far they can push YouTube toward a #4 and if it will actually be profitable before they break the userbase, alongside their broader push to nullify adblock in Chrome (USE FFX for the love of all that's pure and holy)
I'm not really sure what else to say here. This is the sort of thing that would take mass action and probably a fundamental shift in how Western capitalism operates to reverse at this point. YouTube are not going to give up without a fight, and if they do, a lot of people risk the loss of livelihoods, important resources, and precious memories. You can play around with the algorithm and see if you can get it to treat you better by closing the app or tab immediately any time you are served an ad. But don't expect that to be a long term solution.
This is depressing, but it's not just that one guy in some office got greedy. It's a keeping the lights on thing. Venture capital has tightened its fists so we're going to see more of this enshittification capitalism soon unless we deliberately put the brakes on it at the government regulations level. This video from Cory Doctorow is, while not a be all end all, at least somewhere concrete to start:
youtube
doesn't it piss you off corporations act like you were born to see ads. why it's so bad for trying to escape them??? the way it's okay for websites to make ads sooo annoying you feel like you have no choice but buy premium. and even then you can't escape ad reads. i don't want to waste hours of my life skipping ads. finding the x button. or being woken by an ad that pops at the end of 3 hours long white noise video. using spotify without premium is a nightmare. i hate how ads are everywhere and somehow it's normal to say 'if you don't want to see ads on youtube and use adblock then you're stealing from them!' what. i'm gonna install adblock on every computer elders in my family use as a preventive measure bc too many websites put ads in between news articles!!!

Proven Techniques for Optimizing Website Efficiency
In today's digital age, where attention spans are short and competition is fierce, having a fast and high-performing website is crucial to success. Webmasters play a pivotal role in ensuring that websites not only look great but also load quickly. Optimizing website efficiency and speed is a multifaceted task that requires a combination of technical know-how and best practices. In this comprehensive guide, we will dive into the strategies and techniques that webmasters can implement to supercharge the speed and performance of their websites.
Understanding the Importance of Website Speed
Website speed is not just a convenience for users; it directly impacts metrics such as user experience, bounce rates, and even search engine rankings. Studies have shown that visitors tend to abandon a website if it takes more than a few seconds to load, highlighting the critical role that speed plays in retaining visitors and driving conversions.
Diagnosing Performance Issues
Before diving into optimization strategies, it's essential to identify the root causes of slow performance. Common culprits include large image files, excessive plugins, inefficient code, and server-related issues. By conducting a thorough audit using tools like Google PageSpeed Insights or GTmetrix, webmasters can pinpoint areas that need improvement.
Proven Strategies for Optimization
1. Optimize Images
Images are often the heaviest elements on a webpage. By compressing images without compromising quality, leveraging next-gen formats like WebP, and lazy loading images below the fold, webmasters can significantly reduce loading times.
2. Minify CSS and JavaScript
Minification involves removing unnecessary characters from code without altering its functionality. This simple yet effective technique reduces file sizes, leading to faster loading speeds.
3. Utilize Browser Caching
Enabling browser caching instructs visitors' browsers to store static assets locally, reducing the need to re-download content on subsequent visits. Implementing optimal caching policies can drastically improve website performance.
4. Content Delivery Network (CDN)
CDNs distribute website content across multiple servers worldwide, enabling faster delivery based on users' geographic locations. By leveraging a CDN, webmasters can reduce latency and enhance overall site performance.
5. Optimize Server Performance
Choosing a reliable hosting provider, configuring server settings for optimal performance, and implementing server-side caching mechanisms are essential steps to ensure that the backend infrastructure supports fast loading times.
6. Monitor Performance Metrics
Regularly monitoring performance metrics such as page load time, time to first byte (TTFB), and resource loading sequences can provide insights into the effectiveness of optimization efforts. Tools like Google Analytics and New Relic are invaluable for tracking and analyzing performance data.
Final Thoughts
In the competitive online landscape, website speed can be a game-changer. By prioritizing optimization strategies and staying abreast of the latest industry trends, webmasters can elevate their websites to new levels of speed and performance. Remember, a fast website not only delights users but also boosts conversions and improves search engine visibility.
Optimizing website performance is an ongoing journey, but with the right tools and techniques at your disposal, you can propel your website to success in the digital realm.
Implement these strategies today and watch your website soar to new heights of speed and performance!
Stay tuned for more insightful tips and tricks for webmasters as we continue to explore the dynamic world of website optimization. Remember, speed matters in the digital race!
