My experience with bad policing :(
Yesterday evening I had a challenging encounter with law enforcement that further caused me to lose faith in Police Officers. As many of you may know, I am a mental health professional only months away from my Master’s in Rehabilitation Counseling at The George Washington University. I work in a Non-profit agency that supports adults with mental disabilities and/or co-occurring disorders i.e substance abuse & other physical impairments. I intern at a state agency which provides jobs to a similar population.
Well, last night on my way home from work I noticed an older, white gentlemen sitting on the side of a relatively busy two lane road here in Silver Spring, MD. I was immediately concerned and considered my own clients whom occasionally have gone missing for hours or even days due to getting lost or forgetting where they were. So, I pulled over and walked up to the man. I stood close enough in proximity where he could hear me and be comforted if necessary, yet far enough that if (on the off chance) he was dangerous I could run to my car and get away. Well, turns out my intuition was right. He had some obvious cognitive deficiencies and was lost. He told me that he felt very tired and had been walking for quite some time so he decided to sit down. (again, on a busy street, no side walks, benches, etc.) He told me that he would like a ride home and that he did not think he lived far.
Despite his soft, kind presence and demeanor - I was uncomfortable taking him home alone in my car. There was no clarity on his address or how close he lived and at this point I felt responsible for whatever happened to me AND him from that  point forward. I told him to sit tight and that I would get a ride for him. He responded “your light shines! your light shines! thank you so much.” I got in my car and I called the police detailing all of the above information. I gave a description of the man, I explained my credentials and that I believed he needed help with getting home. The dispatcher told me that he would be sending someone out ASAP!
Well, before long, another car pulls up. A good Samaritan who also just wanted to make sure the gentleman was OK. After several minutes of us jogging the gentleman’s memory, he was able to remember his address. The good Samaritan offered to drive him home however, asked that I call the police back with an update and asking them to meet him at the new address. Mind you, at this point I had been there with the older gentleman the entire time (about 30 minutes total.) When I called 9-1-1 back, a new dispatcher of course answered  stating that their reports said “officers came out to the scene, assessed the situation and discovered that the man was ok.” This was COMPLETELY false as I had been there with the man from the time I placed the initial call. Not a single officer arrived and WOULD NOT HAVE if I did not call back. I hollered back “THAT IS RIDICULOUS!” THIS IS WHY PEOPLE DO NOT CALL THE POLICE WHEN THEY NEED HELP AND WHY PEOPLE DO NOT HAVE TRUST IN LAW ENFORCEMENT, THE PEOPLE WHO ARE SUPPOSED TO BE PROTECTING US.
I was and honestly still am bothered by how Montgomery County, MD Police completely disregarded the needs of this man. Had I drove off with the trust that police were on their way, who knows what could have happened to that man or how long he would have been vulnerable on the side of the road. Now, some officer here gets away with filing a FALSE claim. This situation highlighted one of the MANY reasons why I am so passionate about the mental health profession. Individuals with mental and physical disabilities are some of the most under-served, overlooked and discredited human beings in this country. Even by police officers whom are SUPPOSED to protect and serve ALL Americans despite race, class, gender or cognitive functioning. I am disappointed and saddened. Yet grateful for people like Bryan, the man who stopped to help. He reminded me that for all of the FUCKERY that goes on in our country, we can still have a grain of faith in humanity.

Police Brutality Situation
May 6th, 2018
  Dear Chief of OPD:
We think it’s best to let everyone in the police department know that it isn’t okay for the police to think their supercilious towards people. The people of color are the most targeted because over the years people of color have been killed by police officers. That shows there are problems between police and people of color.
The issue is police brutality and…
