I contacted all my state representatives and one called me this morning from D.C. to tell me they appreciate my concerns and will be passing it on to the higher ups.

So please please take time today to call and email your state representatives, the white house, anyone you can. Make a uproar about this bill. Let them know we don't want this to pass!!

KOSA Bill and why we shouldn't support it

The kosa bill is being supported by over 40 senators. Meaning it's a high risk of it getting passed. It is a human rights violation and they simply do not care. And our parents being able to see our phones isn't even the biggest issue, social media apps will have no choice but to simply not allow anyone to post about "controversial topics." This means topics on -politics -race -gender or sexuality -gun violence or simply gun information in general The kosa bill will affect anyone 16 and younger, however, it'll affect adults too, it will become extremely difficult to gather information on things happening in the world and I guarantee that's the entire reason they're supporting the bill in the first place The kosa bill will affect other countries, not only the US. Spread this message!

AO3 IS IN TROUBLE IF CALIFORNIAN AGE VERIFICATION LAW PASSES

An upcoming Age verification bill centered in California will be voted on Monday-- And as always,instead of actually protecting kids, it will lead to more online censorship and privacy risks, as it will force websites hosting to verify their users age by sending their ID, your browser history would be linked to it. if you live California, call your reps and tell them to oppose the bill AB3080 as it highly unconstitutional.

They also deem LGBT content harmful to minors, as well as mentions of weapons and tobacco, putting them on the same level as NSFW content.

Since AO3 headquarters reside in California, much like Reddit, Twitter,Discord and Youtube (and others) who knows how bad the effects would be. Instead of just effecting Californians (even then its concerning.) the effects would be US or even worldwide. VPNs wont help.

those trying to get this bill passed have SPECIFICALLY stated that is is going to target trans people and other lgbtq identities. the "protecting children" bit is largely a cover to police internet access and stop largely lgbtq media and information from reaching certain parts of the internet (at least according to the few google searches i did on it, please look into it more yourself!)

also, while this is a US bill, it WILL BE ABLE to affect non-US countries! the link below has ways to contact your representatives (yes, there is also a non-US option)!

please spread this, if passed, it could genuinely do A Lot of harm. contact those representing you, if you're not comfortable puting your actual information to contact them, ask to use a friends or family members! at the very least, SPREAD THE WORD! if this isn't the type of stuff you normally reblog, do it anyway, or make a sideblog dedicated to spreading stuff like this! there ARE ways you can help, more than just the ways listed here!

KOSA PASSES SENATE 7/30/24

Kosa has unfortunately passed the Senate on a 91-3 vote. I want this to be clear, It’s not going into effect, it still has to get to the House but I believe there will be a break for the month of August which gives us A WHOLE MONTH!! to call your HOUSE representatives and tell them to vote NO on Kosa. It’s not over yet so many people told their senators and representatives that they didn’t want KOSA. We can do it again, PLEASE do not panic and give up!! I know it’s scary I’m very scared right now myself but if we go silent that’s how it’s going to pass the House and get signed to the president. Let’s try to stop that from happening!!!
