Stephen Grant
On 14 February 2007, Valentine's Day, Stephen Grant called the Macomb County Sheriff's Office in the county seat, Mount Clemens, Michigan, to report that his wife, Tara Lynn Grant, had been missing for five days. In his account, Grant said that this was not the first time his 34-year-old wife had left home, which was why he had not immediately reported her missing. He said that on the evening of 9 February, he had overheard Tara talking with someone on the phone, saying, "I'll meet you at the end of the driveway". He said he saw her get into a dark-colored car that drove off, and that he had not seen or heard from her since.
Over the following two weeks, Stephen Grant made numerous media appearances, at times accusing authorities of harassment. The day after reporting Tara missing, Grant was stopped by police and arrested for driving with a suspended license. He accused police of using the traffic arrest as an excuse to take him into custody to question him further about Tara's disappearance. Police denied the accusation.
According to police, Stephen Grant was less than cooperative with them during their early investigation. He initially refused to answer questions but agreed to take a polygraph test, if it was administered by someone other than the police. On 2 March 2007, police executed a search warrant at the home of Stephen and Tara Grant in Washington Township, Michigan. They found a dismembered human torso, believed to be that of Tara Grant, stored in a plastic garbage bag in the garage. They immediately gained an "open murder" arrest warrant for Stephen Grant, who had already fled the scene. They had not yet determined the degree of the charges.
Two days later, after tracking a cell phone call that Stephen made to his sister, Griem, police found the suspect 225 miles away in northern Michigan's Wilderness State Park. He had taken liquor and pills from his sister's house, intending to commit suicide. After driving to the park, he spent the night in the freezing cold, with no outer clothing for protection. After being taken into custody, he was airlifted by helicopter to Northern Michigan Hospital in Petoskey for treatment of hypothermia.
In a press conference on 5 March, Mark Hackel, Sheriff of Macomb County, discussed a confession that Grant had made to them in the hospital. He confessed to police in detail about strangling his wife Tara to death on the night of 9 February, after an argument in which he had accused her of spending too much time with a co-worker. She had returned that day from a business trip to Puerto Rico. Their two children were at home but were asleep in bed.
Grant later dismembered her body at his father's tool and dye shop, USG Babbitt. He took the remains to nearby Stony Creek Metro Park in Shelby Township and disposed of body parts there. But after learning the police planned to search the park, Grant recovered the torso of his wife, and hid these remains in black plastic garbage bags in their garage.
After being released from the hospital, Grant was transported to Macomb County by a convoy of Macomb County Sheriff's deputies. On 6 March 2007 Grant was formally charged with count one homicide: murder in the first degree that is premeditated, and with count two disinterment and/or mutilation of a dead body. The charge of count one homicide in the first degree that is premeditated is punishable by life in prison. The charge of disinterment, dismemberment, is punishable by up to 10 years in prison or a $5,000 fine or both.
On 13 April 2007, the Macomb County Prosecutor released Stephen Grant's two-part confession publicly, a transcript of the interview with detectives and his own handwritten confession. Details included his arguing with his wife over his jealousy about her spending time with a co-worker. He also said he had been having an affair with Verena Dierkes, the family's 19-year-old au pair from Germany. As the argument escalated, Grant strangled Tara in anger. He also described his efforts to dismember her body and hide it, after he had notified the police of her disappearance.
On Friday, 21 December 2007, Stephen Grant was found guilty on the charge of murder in the second degree. On Thursday, 21 February 2008, he was sentenced to a minimum of fifty years in prison.

Praew@Fiat Chrysler Automobiles
Hi guys! I’m Praew, and I’m a rising Senior in the Industrial design program!
Tumblr media
(Incase you guys didn’t know who I was lol. This was taken at the 12 mile beach!)
I am currently interning at FCA (Fiat Chrysler Automobiles), within their User Experience team! When I first received this opportunity, I was extremely worried that I was going to be stranded and bored in the middle of nowhere, Michigan (since I didn’t know how to drive) — but it actually has been one of the best summers ever!
A lot of you may not be interested in the automotive field at all, and trust me, I was the same, but ever since being here I have realized how much potential there is for User Experience design within this field. Everyone is looking forward to the ‘connected lifestyle’ that we are going to have in the future, and to have that kind of connectivity, the car is going to have to be at the center of that experience.
(Check out this cool video by Nissan if you have no idea what I’m talking about! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h-TLo86K7Ck )
Due to all this future hype and technology trends, I have attended many cool brainstorming sessions for concept cars. FCA also works in very lean teams, so they listen to everyone’s opinions, and even as an intern, your voice could easily make an impact in ideas that go forward to the final stages!
To me, the best part of this internship was that they really respected my thoughts, and let me shape my own project so that I could work on and learn about things that I enjoy doing. I had many small side projects that exposed me to new areas of design, but I was also able to focus on something that I am interested in as my main one. Even the UI work was interesting to me, since it was in a car dashboard cluster/radio format, rather than the usual phone or web interfaces.
Apart from the work part of this internship, they also had really good programs for interns to join, like factory tours, test lab tours (HMI lab, wind tunnel etc), test ride and drives and social events with other interns in the area (Ford, GM). They also placed most of the interns in the same housing complex (in Clarkston), so it was great to be able to hang out with the other interns after work and on weekends.
Tumblr media
(View of Detroit from one of the apartment tours the After5 intern program took us on!)
Tumblr media
(Sunsets in Michigan — I would see this really often, just on my way home from work!)
Another part that made this summer amazing was the beautiful nature around Michigan, and the awesome people that I became really good friends with who would go on these weekly adventures with me. Michigan has the most beautiful lakes, skies and sunsets — totally worth the 3~5 hour drives out to each location! I would really recommend visiting Mackinaw Island and the Sleeping Bear Dunes/Traverse City if any of you ever visit Michigan!
Tumblr media
(Kayaking at Stony Creek Metro Park! People love watersports here in Michigan: apart from kayaking, they also had paddleboarding, canoeing, jetskiing, fishing, yachting…etc.!)
Tumblr media
(Hiking with my intern friends at the Tahquamenon River Trail!)
Tumblr media
(Pictured Lakes National Lakeshore)
Tumblr media
(Twelve mile beach)
Tumblr media
(Sleeping Bear Dunes….the most difficult hike of my life!!!)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Mackinaw Island!)
Detroit and Ann Arbor are also great (nearby) cities to visit, despite what people say about Detroit, I loved going down there even though it was a 40 minute drive from the FCA office. Ann Arbor is a quirky college town with a lot of great eateries, cafes and vintage stores, so I think that being in Michigan really allowed me to explore a very diverse range of lifestyles and experiences!
Tumblr media
(Greektown in Downtown Detroit featuring my intern friends Joy and Saniya, and ID Seniors Diana, Eileen and Albert!)
Tumblr media
(Lack of good food is definitely not a concern in Michigan….courtesy of Diana’s snapchat hehe)
If you have any questions about interning at FCA/in Michigan/with an automotive company please don’t hesitate to come up to me and ask! It has been a really great experience for me, so I would be down to chat about it more in detail anytime!

During the Pandemic I’ve been hiking and birdwatching. This painting shows the day I sighted a Barred Owl at Stony Creek Metro Park. It’s acrylic on canvas 12 x 16. The title is Owl Sighting and has two meanings. I discovered the owl and it looked right at me.

Stony Creek Mararthon This was the 4th time I've done this marathon but the first time I think I did it right :o). When you're on the start line of a 50 mile race in 90 degree heat with high humidity, it brings some comfort knowing you have a plan. My plan was to take all the lessons I had learned from making mistakes (& from from doing things right) in previous years & use that experience to my advantage. Things like wearing a bag of ice, not starting like a bat out of hell, taking Endurolytes, having a plain/dump water bottle on my bike, not sitting on the wheel of someone I catch, ride smarter/not harder, find the 'sweet spot' & stay in that zone, use a Hammer gel flask/not individual packets, drink Perpetuem, & stay positive...amongst other things... can't give away all the secrets ;o). Big thanks to our sponsor Hammer Nutrition though!!! Their products & information are the BEST! Having nutrition dialed (finally) made a really big difference & I'm very grateful for their support this season. The race went well. Not a very big field...we had 5 ladies on the line. Same old Stony Creek trail but a slightly different course this year. Sue took off at the start, got the hole shot, & never looked back. She won by a good margin! I came in second and Bonnie Karas (Team Fraser) was third. The race itself was kind of weird this year because for as many other racers as there was on course, I found I was completely alone for most of it. Regardless, the laps seem to fly by fast & it was all over before I knew it! All in all I think it was a great success for Team Quiring! Congrats to Sue on the WIN & to all of the other racers that came out & finished. Nice work!

This is a great opportunity for women interested in mountain bike racing to learn from other experienced female riders AND it's TOTALLY FREE!
