Our Own Personal Tour Guide - Frankfurt, Germany
Tumblr media
JULY 9
We arrived in Frankfurt, via train, on July 9th. We had our own personal tour guide to show us around Frankfurt - our friend, Dan Robbins, from Tucson. He lived in this area every summer for 20+ years and he was kind enough to share his knowledge of the area AND his wonderful local friends with us during our visit. He met us at the train station and walked with us over to our Airbnb for our check-in. The temperatures were HOT and the walk seemed long, but we made it. We cooled off at our place with a little water and an oscillating fan - no AC at this place, but we were grateful for the fan! After catching up with Dan for a bit and cooling off, we made our way to the subway station and managed to figure out how to get to our dinner destination - we were meeting Dan’s good friend, Max, at a traditional German restaurant in Frankfurt.
Tumblr media
Apfelwein Solzer - our dinner destination.
Tumblr media
Apfelwein and the Bembel (stoneware jug) it is traditionally served in. Apfelwein is made from a mix of different sour-tasting apples. It is similar to the cider that is sold in the States, but has a tart, sour taste - an acquired taste for sure, but it was enjoyable with a little sparkling water added to it.
Tumblr media
Doug had schnitzel and I had boiled potatoes with hard-boiled eggs, but the real treat was the sauce that they served with it - known as Frankfurt Green Sauce, it is served cold and made from 7 different herbs (borage, chervil, cress, parsley, salad burnet, sorrel, and chives). I thought it was delicious! We also had a local cheese dish called “handkase mit musik” - it is a sour milk cheese and you can get it with or without “musik” (with means that you will have, shall we say, “more digestive noise” after you have consumed it).
Tumblr media
Max and his daughter, Emma, perfect dinner companions! Thanks for a wonderful evening of local cuisine!
JULY 10
The next morning we met Dan at the train station and had breakfast at a little cafe inside the station that Dan frequents. The owner was super attentive and friendly, he runs a bustling little business, taking care of people as they go about their travels. After breakfast, we hopped on the local train and made our way out to Seligenstadt and the tennis club that Dan played for when he lived in Germany. Doug and Dan played a little tennis, I enjoyed the shade on the patio of the club. After the tennis, we walked a few feet to a local chocolate company, Kohler’s, and ice cream store that is owned by friends of Dan. We were treated to ice cream, courtesy of the owner, and had the chance to visit with him for a few minutes. What a great treat! I forgot to take pictures, I guess I was too busy eating my ice cream before it melted!

Doug and Dan played a little tennis at the club. Beautiful little club out in the little town of Seligenstadt.
After a short train ride and walk, we met Dan’s friend, Timo, on one of the town squares. We enjoyed a beer before Dan and Timo took us on a little walking tour of the town. I will let the pictures speak for themselves on what a picturesque little German town it is:

We passed by the local brewery on our way to Timo’s house to meet his family and have a light BBQ.

Ingrid, Harald, Paul, Timo, Mathilda, Dan, and Vanessa - what a wonderful family! A huge thank you to all of them for being so welcoming and for spending time with us. Thanks for sharing them with us, Dan!
JULY 11
This morning, we met Dan for a little walk around Old Town Frankfurt and then a trip out to Steinbach (the town he is living in this summer, just outside of Frankfurt).
Tumblr media
Myzeil Shopping Center in Frankfurt - the iconic glass front is known as the “a**hole” of Frankfurt by the locals, according to Dan. Definitely not part of Old Town, but we wandered by it on our walk through town.
Tumblr media
Alte Oper - the Frankfurt opera house.
Tumblr media
Frankfurt Cathedral.
Tumblr media
History about the destruction in Frankfurt from Allied Forces’ air raids during WWII, located in the entrance lobby of the cathedral.
Tumblr media
The interior of the cathedral.
Tumblr media
The organ in Frankfurt Cathedral.
After our visit to the cathedral, we found the Old Town Square, very picturesque:

Retenturm, an historical tower built around Frankfurt’s shipping trade square on the Main River between 1455 and 1456.
Tumblr media
A view of Frankfurt from Eiserner Steg, I loved the contrast between the glass and steel buildings and the older brick buildings in the foreground.

View from Eiserner Bridge, looking back at Old Town and Frankfurt Cathedral.

Enjoying the shade and the view of the river on our walk along the Main River Promenade.
We stopped for lunch at a local establishment recommended by Max for its schnitzel. Doug and Dan enjoyed the schnitzel, I had a salmon salad - it was a bit fancy and pricey, but the food was good and our waiter was very kind and helpful. After lunch, we rode the subway back to the train station and took the local train out to Steinbach. We walked through the lovely countryside out to Dan’s local tennis club.

Making our way through the warm, but beautiful wheat fields in Steinbach.
Tumblr media
An amazing view of Frankfurt on our walk.
Tumblr media
A lovely, cold beer on the patio at the tennis center in Steinbach.
We hung out for a bit on the patio - watching the local kids having tennis lessons, while we lazed in the shade. We finally had to head back to Frankfurt and get ready to leave tomorrow. We said our goodbyes, leaving Dan to head back to his place in Steinbach, while we made our way back through the fields to catch the train back to Frankfurt. Thanks, Dan, we have had a great time with you in Frankfurt!
