It takes a lot to break a ghost. After all, even death didnât keep them down for long, not in any way that mattered.
There is, however, a sure fire way to utterly crush a ghostâs core without even touching it.
Find their grave, and defile it.
It is the height of cruelty. It is the ultimate act of disrespect. It is violation, of the deepest kind, an act that can never, ever be allowed to go unpunished.
As Danny stared at the remains of the toppled over rock tower that Tucker and Sam had made for him all those years ago, to honor his death, he wasnât sure if he could survive this.
ââ
Please.
Zatanna looked around. The magician knew better than to write off the sound as a trick of her mind.
You have to help him. Please. Heâs just a child.
âWho? Whatâs wrong?â Zatanna asked, heart aching for the grieving whispers of the young voice.
My brother. His grave. Itâs been destroyed. Please.
Zatannaâs hair stood on ends. âWhatâs his name? Where is it?â
Amity Park. His name is Phantom. Please. Hurry.
Her heart skipped a beat. Phantom. The name of the Infinite Realmâs Champion, the future king.
âShit. Iâm on my way. Can you lead me there?â
I canât. I wonât be here for much longer. Tell him Jazz sent you. Please. Help him. Help him.
âI will.â
When Zatanna portals out of her dressing room, she catches a flash of red hair.
ââ
âCONSTANTINE!â
âGah! Zatanna?â John Constantine fell out of his chair, legs slipping from their place propped onto the table.
âEmergency! Infinite Realms level. Someone destroyed Phantomâs grave.â
Constantine scrambled upwards, pulling on his coat as his mind all but bleated like a highland goat at the sound of âInfinite Realmsâ and âPhantomâs grave.â Destroying a ghostâs grave might destroy the ghost, but if they survive the initial splintering, right before their final death, theyâll explode in a ball of fury. Normally, it would be slightly less of a problem. Normally, it wouldnât be the most powerful ghost in the Infinite Realms. Normally, this wouldnât happen. Normally, even if it did, it wouldnât risk a war none of the universes would win. The Infinite Realms loves prince Phantom. Their grief over this⊠even if he survives, the consequences would be unimaginable.
âYou contact the League. I have to go fix this, right now.â
John doesnât bother going for his hottle, because he unfortunately needed to do this sober.
âGo, go!â
ââ
Danny doesnât turn even as he hears the crunch of grass blades. He sits, staring blankly at what used to be his grave marker.
âHi, there,â itâs a woman. She sounds sad. Danny understands, because all he feels is a whistling hole where his heart used to be. âAre you Phantom?â
Danny sighs, ice crackling at his lungs. He knows, when this is over, heâll find it in himself to rage. If he doesnât shatter from this, he knows heâll take Amity out. Perhaps heâd spare this one. Itâs been a long time since anyone bothered visiting or even knew about his grave.
âYour highnessâŠyour sister sent me. Jazz?â
That got Dannyâs attention. Glowing green eyes peeked from the curled ball of ghost to stare Zatanna down.
She swallowed.
âShe⊠had red hair?â
âWhy are you here?â Why did she send you? He doesnât say. Zatanna seems to understand anyways.
âTo help. Please, will you let me help?â
Danny looks down at the ice freezing her feet to the ground and thinks of the kind set of her eyes, the steel backing her spine, the carefully nonthreatening posture. Yes, Jazz would send this kind of person to help him.
The ice melts.
âThank you.â
Danny watches as she approaches his destroyed grave. She glances back for his permission. He shrugs. Itâs destroyed. Nothing would ever bring it back.
And then, he was proven wrong.
Zatannaâs eyes glow, and the stones began melding itself back together- no, it was reversing the damage and zooming back to its proper place.
âOh.â
The damage to his core was still there. But⊠he wonât kill this one at all.
Or her friends, who stand at the edge of the clearing with the soul-torn one standing at the helm.
âIs this⊠alright, your highness?â
Danny stares at Zatanna. His voice is hoarse but⊠but itâs not on the verge of insanity anymore.
âDo you always come to graves without an offering?â
He knows heâs being rude. Heâs past the point of caring. Zatannaâs response is to pull a bouquet of lilies from behind her back.
ââ
Phantomâs face is so young, and itâs even younger when he smiles.
âNot always,â Zatanna replies, rolling her eyes. But when she settles the flowers down, theyâre gently placed.
âCan you magic clovers around it?â Phantom asks, that note of painful hope cracking her own heart. She wonders how old he was when he died.
âOf course.â
A field of clovers surrounds the rock tower, and Zatanna adds four layers of heavy wards around the area when she grows them. Phantom notices, and looks up at her with⊠trust.
âI am Zatanna. Your sister, Jazz, sent me.â
âOkay. You can call me Phantom.â
ââ
âI want their heads.â Danny says.
âWe donât kill.â
âThen hand them over to us, for they have hurt the Great One. They will answer for their crimes.â Frostbite settles a hand on Dannyâs shoulder.
âAlright.â
âConstantine.â
Constantine somehow manages to drag Batman away to hiss in his ears.
âShit in a hole, Batsy, Iâm not fucking with the Infinite Realms. My demons wonât fuck with the Infinite Realms. Destroying a ghostâs grave is an act of war, and an act of complete violation, and weâre lucky Phantom liked Zee enough not to completely bring ruin to our universe. So shut up, and get the bastards that did this.â
âHm.â
ââ
Zatanna sits in the visitors chair, Batmanâs and Constantineâs disgruntled selves standing behind her.
âHow old are you, Phantom?â
âHm?â The future King looks exhausted, understandably. âOh, sixteen.â
âYouâre⊠sixteen? Thatâs how old you look, right?â
Sheâs hoping that heâs older, that heâs a millennia and a half years old. Because if he wasnât, whoever broke Phantomâs grave, broke the grave of a child.
âNo, Iâm sixteen. My body looks fourteen. I died when I was fourteen.â
Constantine swears.
Batman straightens and walks out, fists clenched.
Zatanna eases the hum of hunting magic at her finger tips and smiles at Phantom until he sleeps.
Then, she gets up, and hunts.

om boys x reader
wc : 1.k
warnings : none, just lovesick boys and their lovesick mc (and cute little Luke and his cute little mc)
synopsis : instances in which you treated them so good they felt like pampered royalty
a/n : the 10k special is hereeee! tysm, once again! <33
Leaning down, resting your knees on the dirty ground, just so you could tie his shoe for him
His steel composure allows Lucifer to remain rather unbothered, but you know better. You hear the way his breath hitches, his eyes widening just a fraction at seeing you so casually drop to your knees. He's at loss for words as he watches your fingers swiftly grab his shoelaces and begin tying them back into a neat bow. Lucifer doesnât even try to hide the faint blush coating his skin when you stand back up- instead, he takes a moment to just bask in the pride he can feel building inside of you before he chuckles and shakes his head fondly.Â
âMy, McâŠI do appreciate the bold gesture, but now youâve got your knees all dirty..how shall I repay you, hm?â
â
Unlike the firstborn, Diavolo, while he does have steel composure, forgets the definition of it as soon as youâre telling him to wait a second before crouching down beside him. Heâs used to being tailored to, of course, but thereâs just something about seeing your knees scrubbing the dirt and your tongue poking out as you concentrate on tying his shoe that makes him melt. Once youâre finished, heâll lift you off the ground himself and brush off your knees, blush as dark as his hair while he laughs loudly.Â
âYouâre always so full of surprises! That did affect me quite badly, I must sayâŠthough allow me to do the same for you next time.âÂ
â
The sound (see: squawk) that escapes Mephisto is completely undignified. Heâs absolutely embarrassed, especially at the tingling sensation he feels on his hand where youâd lightly smacked it when he went to tie his shoe himself before dropping to your knees to do it instead. The gravel beneath you crunches as you shift to get up, making his hand dart to help and pull you close to him; heâs regained his composure now, but his words are still low and flustered, even as he gives you a smirk.Â
âWell, aren't you just sweet. Nobodyâs ever gone through such lengths to simply tie my shoe, but youâll be compensated, donât worry. Come here, McâŠâ
â
Stone faced as ever, Raphael just stares down at you with an almost confused look. He goes to say something about your clothes getting dirty on the floor everyoneâs been walking on, but his words die in his throat when you peer up at him with a lovesick smile. Almost in a trance, he watches you carefully loop his shoelaces and tie them tautly before standing back up; only when his hand subconsciously finds the curve of your waist does he snap back to reality and give you a small smile of his own (he prays youâll ignore the blush spreading across his cheeksâŠyou do. For now).
âA-ah, Mc-! IâŠplease, allow me to wipe your knees off, theyâve gotten dirty from the flooringâŠyou really didnât have to, you know, I can tie my own shoeâŠthank you..âÂ
Grabbing his hand with a featherlight touch and bringing it up to your face so you could place a soft, slow kiss to his knucklesÂ
Mammonâs base reaction is to jolt and scold you for teasing him, but his eyes dart to how your pupils are practically in the shape of hearts as you press your lips against his skin, and suddenly the loud mouthed second born is going quiet. The tiniest of gasps escape him as you begin to pull away, hand instinctively curling around yours and bringing it to rest over his thumping heart to keep you that much closer; the lovesick chuckle he gives you makes you melt.
âWhatâre yaâ o-ohâŠMcâŠdâya even know what you're doinâ to me, actinâ like that? Where are ya goinâ? CâmereâŠcome closer..want another kiss- how about on the lips this time, yeah?â
â
Satan melts right through your fingers, eyes lidding and dumb little smile crossing his face. He is a sucker for this stuff and the murmur of your name is so breathless and adoration-filled. Heâll quietly demand another kiss, carefully watching your lips press against his skin before heâs flipping your hands around and kissing the back of yours instead. He relishes in the blush on your face but quickly turns a bashful shade of pink when you comment on how pretty that lovesick expression of his was.Â
âMcâŠgive me another one..yeah. You make my heart race, you know that? And youâre so pretty when you look at me like that..fuck. W-whatâ? My expressionâŠI..I canât help itâŠâs all your fault.âÂ
â
The squeal that escapes Asmo nearly leaves you deaf, but he just looks so charming with his giddy grin and sparkling eyes that you decide to overlook it (like always). Heâs absolutely delighted at the action and begs you to do it again so he can take a picture for devilgram, but once the surprise is over, he just looks at you so softly. The pure adoration and love he sees in your eyes makes him feel like heâs floating and Azzy will be sure to shower you with kisses all over until youâre feeling the exact same.Â
âOHH MY! How sweet of you, hon! Let me take a picture, do it again, do it again! Youâre just so full of surprises, darling, I love it! I love you. I love you so much, you know? You make my heart race~!âÂ
â
Barbatosâ brain doesnât catch up right away. He finishes greeting you and gets halfway through listing off the tea party spread before he actually processes the actionâ and that your hand is still holding his, rubbing your thumb over where youâd kissed. He stops right in the middle of the corridor and stares at you blankly, hot blush slowly rising onto his cheeks. The smile that crosses his face is completely for your eyes only (lovesick and bashful) and heâll give you his amused chuckle before kissing your knuckles in return, bowing as he does so.Â
ââI have also prepared a selection of-!!âŠyou..you are very sly, McâŠI canât say I mind it though. I do hope youâll keep the way you affect me just between us, howeverâŠcanât have anyone else seeing, hm? Shall I return the favor?â
â
You and Solomon teased each other back and forth quite often but this he wasnât expecting. And he couldnât just play it off- not with so much infatuation plastered over your face as you keep placing kisses along his hand. He averts his eyes shyly, darting back and forth as he tries to form words, butâŠyou just got him so good with that gesture, heâs absolutely tongue tied as he peers at you with his blushy face, voice actually cracking as he asks what that was for.Â
âIâ!âŠI, u-uhâŠMcâŠwhat- what was that forâŠ? You drive me absolutely crazyâŠcan you do it again..please..?âÂ
Sliding your jacket off and wrapping it around his shoulders- even though it might not fit correctly- just because they were cold
Leviâs face is a blistering beacon of cherry and he takes a brief moment to malfunction before shakily gripping at the fabric around his shoulders, looking up at you with wide eyes. Itâs something heâs seen straight from an anime, something heâs always wanted to experience, but now that he actually has, his soul is leaving his body because your cute little smile is just tooâŠcute! He wonât give the jacket back, though, instead choosing to bury himself deeper in the material with a stuttered âthank youâ.Â
âH-h-huh?! O-oh, McâŠyou..T-t-thank y-you!! âS really softâŠân s-smells like you..ah-! I-I mean-! Donât listen to me, Iâm j-just rambling! Thank you again!âÂ
â
More than likely too big for your jacket, Beel is confused at first and will ask what youâre doing and tilt his head cutely. Though, when you simply say âyou were coldâ, he turns all smiley and blushy and even lets out a little giggle. That sweet little closed eye smile of his is beaming as he thanks you and insists you pile up in his arms to share the warmth, because arenât you going to get cold too? Being wrapped up in your scent and being able to wrap you up in his sounded like a perfect deal to him.Â
âHm? Oh, McâŠwhatâre you doing?âŠoh. EhehâŠthank you! Wonât you be cold, though? Here, come closer, weâll keep each other warm. YeahâŠyeah I like having you close. I like youâ I love you!âÂ
â
Belphieâs half asleep mind doesnât really register it until he wakes up a few hours later. His lidded eyes land on the sight of your jacket, brain slowly registering before a sleepy- giddy- smile crosses his face. Heâll drag his sluggish body to wherever you are and drop his weight onto you, mumbling his gratitude and how lucky he is to have you without the fully-conscious filter being there. Heâll hold that jacket hostage until it has to be washedâ it just made him feel so loved, he didnât want to let it go.Â
âMmmâŠmh? McâŠ? -yawn- Mc? Mm..thank you..youâre so good to meâŠlove you sâmuch..come sleep with me nowâŠwanna feel your warmth too. No- wanna keep the jacket..let me keep it..please?âÂ
â
Simeon blinks, eyes a bit wide as he stares at you before a bubbly laugh escapes him while he rubs the back of his neck and thanks you. He was quite surprised at the action, but completely delighted, and finds himself grinning stupidly before he can help it. He feels so fuzzy and warm and just wants to giggle and kick his feetâ but he wonâtâŠnot outwardly, anyway. That giddy smile stays, though, all for everyone to see as he parades around with your jacket over his shoulders.Â
âOh, Mc, thank you! You really didnât have toâŠbut I appreciate it nonetheless- youâre so loving and kind, you never fail to make my day. I hope youâll let me do something for you in return to show my appreciation?â
â
The first passing thought in Lukeâs head is to deny heâs even cold, but when he sees that itâs you draping your jacket over him, he decides that yes, he is in fact freezing. And maybe he could just snuggle up to you as well⊠(Mc cuddles are the best!). Heâll happily exclaim to anyone that the jacket is yours and beam because heâs just so thrilled to be your friend and heâs justâŠso precious.Â
âWaaahh!! Thank you, Mc! Are you sure youâre not an Angel? Hehe! Look, guys! Mc gave me their jacket! Aren't they the best?!âÂ

âSo, you really donât care what he thinks?â Shoko asked as you lit her cigarette. âEven I think he was kinda harsh.â
You pocketed your lighter and leaned back against the cold college walls. âHeâs got a thing for that black-haired guy.â
âGetou.âÂ
âSure.â You shrugged and tried to rub the ache out of your neck as you stared up at the bleak, grey skies. The air reeked of petrichor. Thankfully youâd brought an umbrella that day.Â
âAnd youâre not bothered heâs in love with Getou?â Your friend continued, her cute bobbed haircut swaying with the tilt of her head. She always looked so charming like that, when she was being a mischievous brat while pretending to be anything but.Â
âDunno.â And that was the truth. âHeâs not even my type. Iâd rather hitch up with someone like you or Nanami. Someone less annoying. Less loud-mouthed.âÂ
âOoh, that'll hurt his ego.â Shoko smiled. âWell, guess you'll have to learn to deal with it.â
You took a deep breath and rubbed your face as you nodded. âYeah.â
â
âForever is a long time,â You mumbled, leaning your forehead against the cool touch of the window. Rain pittered and pattered, exploding off the glass like trillions of kamikaze planes. It almost birthed some sort of hurt in your chest. Best not to dwell on it, you decided.
âHah? Are you talking to yourself again like a weirdo?â The one and only Gojo Satoru yowled before kicking you in the rear like a petulant child. âPft! Figures. Knowing my luck, I would have to get married to a creeper.âÂ
âEven if you married Getou, you'd still be marrying a creep,â you grumbled, dusting the dirt off your behind. âYou need something? Or did you harass me just for the fun of it?âÂ
You heard Gojo, your fiancĂ©, scoff and shuffle behind you. âI just wanted to remind you to humble yourself! Just because I'm forced to marry you doesn't mean you're accomplished or cool or anything, got it?âÂ
Being in his presence had you craving a cigarette. âYeah, got it.âÂ
âAnd Suguru's better than you,â he added, aloof voice bowing down beneath hardened, steeled words. âDon't forget that either.âÂ
You bit down on your cheek to ward away the heat building under your skin, the magma sinking deep into your eyesockets and threatening to pour down your esophagus. The taste of iron washed against your tongue, and you released your flesh from between your molars. Sometimes, you wanted to keep boring down on yourself to see how much you could really take, but a fear of the answer too often made you think twice.Â
âThis is starting to bore me,â you said, tilting your head as you caught a flicker of red in your rain-muddied reflection. You touched your fingers to your tongue and found blood coating the tips.Â
âPah. I was gonna say the same!â You watched his reflection turn away. âGood luck trying to impress me.âÂ
I'm not interested. You watched him walk away, slouching and with his hands in his pockets like he was emulating some kind of yankii character. He might have fit the bill, if he hadn't had such a ridiculous, brat side to him.
Just deal with it. You wiped the red on your uniform with a sigh. Tomorrow's a new day.Â
â
âSorry about Satoru,â Getou said. He'd found you outside, tucked close against the stone wall with a cigarette in your mouth as you watched the downpour. Apparently, he liked the rain, too.Â
âYou don't need to apologize,â you said after a drag. âIt's not your fault.â Probably.Â
The younger sorcerer smiled a little bit wider. âIn a way, it almost is; Satoru wouldn't be coming after you if it weren't for my, ah, sheer existence, I guess you could say.â
You shrugged. âYou didn't ask to exist,â you said, secretly cringing as the words left your mouth.
Getou laughed. âHo, that's a good point, I didn't think about it that way.â Another chuckle left him as he leaned against the wall beside you and stared at the rain. âIt's definitely Satoru's fault, then.â
You hummed in agreement and offered him a cigarette. He blinked, but plucked one out of the box and looked it over before fumbling to tuck the end into his mouth as you held the lighter's flame out for him. You blocked the wind as he leaned in and inhaled deeply until the butt hissed to life with molten red. A beat later, Getou sputtered and coughed wildly, waving his hand through the air to dismiss your stare and the smoke's mockery.Â
You frowned. âYou don't smoke?âÂ
Your company wheezed and laughed, leaning back against the wall with a humbled smile. âJust wanted to see what all the fuss was about,â he said. âYou and IeiriâI feel like I never see either of you without a cigarette.â
âLifeâs stressful, I guess.â You looked at the half-spent smoke in your hand, exhaling smoke through your nose as you thought.
You saw Getou lean in out of the corner of your eye. His dark hair brushed against your shoulder, though it could have just been the wind, too. âIt doesn't affect you?âÂ
âShoko reverses the negatives,â you grumbled. You stuck the cigarette into the corner of your mouth again before pocketing your hands. âLung cancer would be an easier out than getting ripped to shreds by a curse, besides.âÂ
âHo? You think so?â Getou teased. âYou don't think you'd go mad? Laying in bed, suffocating in your own body, just waiting to die?âÂ
You shrugged. âIt's a human way to go, at least. Random. Maybe self-imposed, sometimes. ButâŠnormal.âÂ
Time slowed for a second as Getou stared at you. You hazarded a look for once in your life, and caught the enigmatic thing's warm, obsidian eyes. They gave you pause, made you wonder, sent your mind reeling as you caught glints of jagged edges disrupting smooth, volcanic glass.Â
âAre you alright?â You asked without thinking.Â
Getou blinked, then smiled. âI just think you're interesting, senpai.â He glanced down at the smoldering stick caught between his fingers. âIt's a surprise, to be honest. I think Satoru'll be in good hands with you.âÂ
You stared down at the puddle pooling around your boots. Another self stared back, his image ruined and distorted by raindrops crashing into him, yet he was still clearer than the version trapped in your skull. Maybe the mirrored image was your real self, and you were just the distortion. âI don't have much of a choice, I guess. But Iâll try my best.â
âThatâs all we can really hope for with partners, right?âÂ
âRight.â A moment passed. âYouâre oddly okay with this.âÂ
âIâm not taking it personally,â Getou said. âHow can I? Neither of you want to do this, anywayâyou hardly even tolerate each other in the first place, and now Satoruâs gone extra crazy about it.âÂ
The ground felt a little more solid under your feet, and you were a little more real, after those words were spoken. Even the reflection in the puddle grew clearer, revealing fresh colours once concealed by grey thoughts. Something would drain the world of its saturation again, but that moment would stay with you until that day came.Â
âThanks,â you said with some difficulty. âThe thoughtâs appreciated.âÂ
âItâs the least I can do.â His hand clasped your shoulder and squeezed gently. You forced yourself not to shrink away from it like a slug trying to flee a grain of salt. âThanks for putting up with him, senpai. Most people arenât so charitable. Besides,â he said, leaning in close enough for his breath to brush against your ear, âI get whatever Satoru gets, and you get whatever he has, no? Whatâs yours is mine, whatâs mine is yours, and all that?â
Heat scattered across your face and prickled the length of your spine. You were foolish to forget that Getou was a menace, just like Gojo, yet somehow more lethal.Â
âSure.â You didnât look at him. You couldnât look at him. Itâd be a death sentence. âYouâll get as much as he gets, I guess.â
Getou chuckled and backed off. âWeâll see.â
â
Gojo threw open the door to your room and zoomed inside, socked feet sliding against smooth hardwood. âItâs me!âÂ
He slipped and fell as soon as you turned to look at him. âItâs you.â You snatched your walkman out of the air as it tipped off your desk following the sorcerer's tumble. âWhy is it you?â
âRude!â Gojo spat out in-between his pained whining. âI'm your fiancĂ©! I'm allowed to be here!â
âThat's not really how that works.â You watched Gojo melt into a starfish, stomach down, cheek smooshed against the floorboards.Â
And you turned away, back to your work of flipping through astronomical charts and comparing the dates and info with the briefs sent to you, the one third year who bothered to stay. The admins relied on you too much, yet thankfully left the role of guidance counselor and teacher to someone older and more tolerant like Yaga. Still, the sparks of hope that were Utahime and Shoko promised some future relief forâ
âMou, why aren't you more concerned for your fiancĂ©âs well-being?â Gojo whined.Â
âI'm more concerned about your sudden desire for me to be concerned,â you offered.Â
Gojo gasped and sat up in a whirlwind. âI never said I desired your concern! That's so salacious.âÂ
âIs this because Getou spoke with me?â You asked, leaning back into your chair with a sigh.Â
âNo!â He rebuked. âMaybe,â he said. âYou better not be trying to win him over âcause youâre jealous.âÂ
âIâm not interested in him,â you snapped. âIâm not interested in you.â
âHmmm, sounds fake. Everyone loves me.â
âRight.â
âYou think thereâs any chance theyâll call off the engagement?âÂ
âNo.âÂ
âCanât you, like, look into the future and figure it out?âÂ
You frowned and sent him a look. âWhat?â
Gojo swayed side to side, hands tucked in the middle of his criss-crossed legs like a kindergartener. âIsnât that your thing?â He huffed. âDoing pre-op stuff, predicting future events, never really going out on missions âcause youâre low-key kinda weak in the field?â A ghoulish snicker left him. âI mean, youâre waaay weaker than me, soââ
âI donât divine for myself,â you said, voice sharp and jagged. âI help avoid disasters. I help foresee assignment outcomes and the best way to move towards or away from them. I donâtââ You swallowed and caught your breath. âI donât divine the fates of people.âÂ
âWell, maybe you should,â Gojo said, sobering slightly. âI donât wanna do this, you donât wanna do this, why donât you just check and see how we can avoid it, huh? This is kind of a natural disaster in its own way.âÂ
âItâs just an arrangement,â you rasped. âYouâll get over it.â
âI shouldnât have to.â Gojo frowned in return. âIâm gonna be the strongest sorcerer in the world. I donât have to settle for an arranged marriage.âÂ
Your heart thudded dully in the back of your skull, its rising pace shaking the cage keeping it safe. Your throat tightened, too, while your thoughts warped and rippled into one another like your reflection, unable to stay whole under the devastation of falling rain, until you heard everything but nothing at once.
Your face must have done something strange for Gojo to look at you like you were a kicked puppy. You hated it, the way his expression flickered and the way his posture lost its self-righteous poise despite his childish way of sitting. He looked less-than. You didnât mean to make him look that way.Â
âIââ He tried, but you raised a hand. He fell silent.Â
âIâll look into it,â you said. âYouâll know if I find anything.â
If Gojo said anything more, you didn't hear it. You shut the rest of the world out and lost yourself in the positions of planets and the elements of each sorcerer available for future missions, comparing and contrasting the direction of energies to decide who would be best suited for which job. Losing your mind in the charts and data calmed your mind and spirit, easing you back down to an equilibrium until the sun rose again and youâd forgotten the turmoil of the hours before.Â
Morning already. You squinted looking out your window and closed the blinds with a quick snap. Right after the blinds settled, you heard a snore.Â
Gojo Satoru was asleep in your bed. His gangly arms hugged a pillow to his chest as he laid on his side, facing your way. The odd sight of peace on the younger sorcerer's face drew you in, bringing you close enough to get a good look at the snowy lashes resting against porcelain skin. He always looked odd to you, as though he were some kind of inhuman human, like an alien trying to put on the guise of your fellow terrans. But he was very much human; the glimpses caught of him during a distantly shared childhood proved as much.Â
I donât wanna do this, you donât wanna do this, why donât you just check and see how we can avoid it, huh?Â
You'd never tell him you already tried to divine that. You could never relay properly how your mind burned with ways to discount your work and force self-doubt into what you knew to be true time after time after time; you were going to marry him. There was no way out.Â
But there were still some things you could judge.
You sat down at your desk and skimmed through files until you happened upon Getou Suguru. Your heart hit your ribs a little faster, a little harder, as you found his birthdate and recognized his element as metal. It suited him. Gojo, on the other hand, held earth energy. That coupled with the more Western-normalized fire sign Sagittarius, explained him in a way that could be regarded as violating by those who didn't understand.Â
You rubbed your brows and squeezed your eyes closed until sparking colours and inky black splotches danced against your eyelids. Charting the stars, understanding people, contrasting energies and suggesting changes to ensure favourable outcomesâall were the culmination of onmyoudou, the ancient art that carved the path and existence for jujutsu, but people feared an onymojiâs ability to read people more than the destruction caused by sorcerers. Onmyoji helped empires move, assisted in bringing them good fortune and positive outcomes; they could foretell what a person should and shouldnât do. Clairvoyance born from calculations, and the wielding of shikigami by those clairvoyants, reeked of power and the abuse of it.Â
Curiosity wrenched your eyes back open. You blinked away the stars and darkness until your vision and mind cleared enough to let you draw up a timeline of events and planets youâd already looked over a thousand times.Â
You frowned and double checked, triple checked, quadruple checked the facts after a first look. You glanced at birthdates again and again. You looked for anomalies in the calendar and cross-referenced your sources. All stayed the same, all were as theyâd been five and sixty minutes agoâyou were too good at your job to be wrong, yet you still always held out hope for errors and your own incompetency.Â
You leaned back in your chair and picked at a hangnail. You can always redirect energy for the sake of a client, you recalled; your mother had taught you as much. It might not be perfect, but we can try. You pulled at the sliver of skin until you gouged it out of your finger, leaving a bloody wound and a shred of relief in its wake.
You jumped as your door slid open to reveal Yaga. His train of thought stopped dead in its tracks as he spied the bratty Gojo curled up in your bed, snoozing without a care.
âWhat the hell is he doinâ here?â Your teacher groused.Â
âHe came in to harass me, I guess,â you said. âThen apparently fell asleep when I started ignoring him.âÂ
âHah. Yeah, that kid can't function unless someone's giving him attention.â Your superior sighed and crossed his arms. âAnyway, you have those predictions?âÂ
âYeah, Iâyeah, just one second.â You rubbed your eyes and begged the rest of your lifeforce to lock it in as you saved documents and compiled them in an email for all the higher-ups to view. Something about the process made your spine rattle; it must have been the fear of not CC-ing someone by accident. âSent.â
Yaga checked his phone as it dinged. He took a moment to skim through the forecast and nodded, letting you stand impatiently before him.Â
âLooks like you touched on everything,â he said as he tucked his phone away. âGood job. Now get some rest, you look like shit.âÂ
Yaga took his leave, and you stared at the oversized baby hogging your bed.Â
Rest. You nudged and pushed Gojo into the wall before collapsing beside him. Right.
