some time ago, i made fun of a Dolycoris baccarum nymph for looking like a disheveled, recently divorced middle aged man. i want to formally apologize to it because as it turns out they can look infinitely worse. this is your aunt's 19 year old purse dog. this is a straight man's shower drain. this is a french fry after you've dropped it on the floor for zero point three seconds. it could make a killing writing online reviews for crust punk records though

Not my normal bug posts but i saw some Florida predatory stink bugs for the first time (ironically eating) these guys tend to eat other invasive bugs but I've not seen them in person before the other day!

Uncharismatic Fact of the Day

What's that smell? Why, it's the brown marmorated stink bug! These insects are famous for their distinctive protection against predators; when threatened, they emit a foul odor. What this odor smells like varies from person to person-- comparisons have been made to cilantro, pepper, fermenting apples, sulfur, skunks, or burnt tires. A few people can't even smell stink bugs at all!

a new Peocilometis species for me, the handsome P. calidus!

my first assumption when seeing this guy was that they were P. apicalis, but thankfully there are much more knowledgable folks on iNaturalist who can ID stink bugs for me :')

i like pupation as much as anyone else but sometimes i feel like hemimetabolism doesn't get enough credit considering how many different Shapes something can go through. i have a ton of Carpocoris mediterraneus photos that i was going to pad out my backlog with post individually, but i'll use some as an example. let's start with some eggs:

i had no idea what these were other than generic stink bug eggs but The Guy Who IDs Every Fucking Stink Bug on inaturalist came through for me. thank you guy who IDs every fucking stink bug

these are not the earliest instars since they're not in a cluster and are only mildly annoyingly small as opposed to borderline invisible but they are arguably the cutest. that is a puppy

later instars are probably my favorite look. it's just a matter of whether you prefer chocolate and vanilla or chocolate and strawberry

all that just to make this oaf. this lummox
