this Dolycoris baccarum's typical slippery maneuvers backfired when it attempted some weird bungee jumping shit to get away from me and instead ended up dangling right in front of my face with nowhere to go and no choice but to have its photo taken. stinkbugs always look kind of perplexed but in this case i don't blame it

Not my normal bug posts but i saw some Florida predatory stink bugs for the first time (ironically eating) these guys tend to eat other invasive bugs but I've not seen them in person before the other day!

Uncharismatic Fact of the Day

What's that smell? Why, it's the brown marmorated stink bug! These insects are famous for their distinctive protection against predators; when threatened, they emit a foul odor. What this odor smells like varies from person to person-- comparisons have been made to cilantro, pepper, fermenting apples, sulfur, skunks, or burnt tires. A few people can't even smell stink bugs at all!

Dark Zebra Shield Bug. Still can barely tell the difference between this species and Bromocoris souefi.

Ancyrosoma leucogrammes is an unusual looking little stink bug that, as far as i can tell, feeds exclusively on wild carrot. here you can see an adult (left) and a nymph (right). the adults are very pretty with their pointy tubercles and white stripes, but the nymphs are just as impressive for their surprisingly good mimicry of wild carrot seeds

here's a better individual look at each one. the adults hang out on and inside carrot flowers, but the nymphs mostly spend time inside, making use of their mimicry. with the way their flowers curl up into perfect hiding spots as they dry, wild carrots often have surprises hiding in them and these guys are among the sneakiest

a new Peocilometis species for me, the handsome P. calidus!

my first assumption when seeing this guy was that they were P. apicalis, but thankfully there are much more knowledgable folks on iNaturalist who can ID stink bugs for me :')
