'brown' insects are criminally overlooked, but are some of the most aesthetically pleasing creatures out there.
No common name (Poecilometis histricus).

this is the nymph of a southern green stink bug (Nezara viridula). these are invasive pests in a lot of countries, but i rarely see them, so i don't know what their populations are really like out here. adults look very similar to several native species, but the nymphs are very distinctive with their pink markings

Not my normal bug posts but i saw some Florida predatory stink bugs for the first time (ironically eating) these guys tend to eat other invasive bugs but I've not seen them in person before the other day!
Saturday September 7th 2024 5:56pm
Note: Part of my exposure therapy is observing insects, arachnids etc and learning the benefits of them, I have come a long way since starting and I'm very surprised at myself💕 thank you to everyone who has been encouraging!

Uncharismatic Fact of the Day
What's that smell? Why, it's the brown marmorated stink bug! These insects are famous for their distinctive protection against predators; when threatened, they emit a foul odor. What this odor smells like varies from person to person-- comparisons have been made to cilantro, pepper, fermenting apples, sulfur, skunks, or burnt tires. A few people can't even smell stink bugs at all!

If you like what I do, consider leaving a tip or buying me a ko-fi!

a new Peocilometis species for me, the handsome P. calidus!
my first assumption when seeing this guy was that they were P. apicalis, but thankfully there are much more knowledgable folks on iNaturalist who can ID stink bugs for me :')
No common name (Poecilometis calidus).

i've posted about sloe bugs (Dolycoris baccarum) before and mentioned how hairy shieldbug is another common name for them, which seems baffling if you've only ever seen an adult. the nymphs, though? my god. look at that thing. that is a hungover 35 year old man. what is he doing with his life. this is why she left, Dolycoris. this is why she left
