“Hey, Todd,” Stick mumbled as Todd approached the chess table in the common room. When they first started their book club, they would sit outside and just talk, but they had discovered that it was more fun to be doing something at the same time. Sometimes they’d pass a soccer ball, sometimes they’d ride bikes, but it was raining, so they decided to play chess.

“Hey,” Todd said, smiling as he put his bag down and plopped into the chair. “How was your day?”

“Good,” Stick said plainly. He had the first move, so he went with a pawn. “Flowers are finally starting to bloom.”

“I know!” Todd said excitedly, mirroring Stick’s move. “It won’t be so dreary anymore.”

“I was thinking about how the seasons never change in the book,” Stick said, moving another pawn. Todd let out a small laugh. Stick always jumped right into it. “And how that makes it harder for both the reader and the boys to fully comprehend the passage of time.”

“Yeah, I noticed that,” Todd agreed, moving out his bishop. “It feels like not too much time has passed in the way the story is being told, but it talks about their hair being a lot longer, so I think there was a time jump at some point in the story that was just never outright acknowledged.”

Todd waited for either Stick’s move or for him to say something. After a moment of neither, he glanced up from the board to see Stick glaring at him. “You like long hair?” Stick asked.

Todd’s eyebrows scrunched in confusion. “What?”

“I bet you think the killing is great, too,” Stick continued, his voice bitter.

Todd stomach dropped, but he didn’t let his expression waver. “Well, I think it’s trying to symbolize—”

Stick interrupted him by pulling out a book and slamming it on the table. The pieces all clattered around and out of place, but the only piece that fell over was Todd’s king. Horror flooded his veins as the reality of the situation sank in.

Stick had found his diary.

And Stick had read his diary.

Stick knew Neil had killed his father.
