Sex & Religion at The Supreme Court

Burwell v. Hobby Lobby

     Hobby Lobby Stores, Inc. is owned and operated by the Green Family since 1972. According to the Green family, as a family business, Hobby Lobby aims to “honor the Lord in all they do by operating the company in a manner consistent with Biblical principles.” In September 2012, Hobby Lobby Stores, filed a lawsuit against the US over the ACA (Affordable Care Act) contraceptive mandate, citing “religious beliefs forbid them from participating in, or otherwise supporting abortion-causing drugs and devices.” On June 30, 2014, the Supreme court ruled in favor of Hobby Lobby, concluding that the contraceptive mandate substantially burdened Hobby Lobby’s exercise of religion.

     The cartoon attached to this piece, by Steve Sack an editorial cartoonist for the Minneapolis Star Tribune, was sketched in response to the Supreme Court’s ruling in the Hobby Lobby case. This cartoon encapsulates key issues in the supreme court ruling in Burwell v. Hobby Lobby. Steve Sack is suggesting Hobby Lobby’s protection under the Religious Freedom Restoration Act (RFRA), an act meant to protect individuals right to freedom of religion, opens the door for the company to impose its religious views on employees. This fact speaks truth to the statement by authors of Love the Sin, “…even if you are not Christian and even if you are not particularly religious, you cannot escape the implications of particular interpretations of Christian morality.” The female Hobby Lobby employee seen in this cartoon would surely agree with that statement. Fitted with a chastity belt, she states “It was the only birth control that my employer’s religious views would allow.” Here, sack is implying that her religious views are given no consideration. Perhaps her religion does not restrict the use of contraceptives. Shifting focus to the elderly woman at the check-out counter; Sack could have painted a young woman or male character yet he chose a very old lady dressed in pearls. Her facial expression seems to be one of judgement. She has raised eyebrows and a tilted face which gives the sense she is looking down her nose at the female Hobby Lobby employee. Its plausible her thoughts are along the line of, ‘In my day we didn’t participate in such promiscuity, we waited until marriage #FamilyValues. Girl, you belong in that chastity belt!’ At first glance these details may not present themselves so explicitly, this is the wit of Steve Sacks cartoon. Steve Sack, through his cartoon is conveying a message similar to the authors of Love the Sin; it is hard for non-Christians and the not-so religious to escape the values of Christian morality intertwined in American society.
