COUSIN OF HENRY VIII WHO HAD HIM EXECUTED

            Edward Stafford, 3rd Duke of Buckingham was an English nobleman and cousin of Henry VIII. Stafford was born at Brecon Castle, Wales and was the son of Henry Stafford and Katherine Woodville, and was the nephew of Elizabeth Woodville and King Edward IV. His father was involved in the rebellion against Richard III and was beheaded without a trial, and Stafford himself had to hide in numerous houses for the remainder of Richard III’s reign.

            When Henry VII succeeded Richard III in 1485 at the Battle of Bosworth, he made Stafford a Knight of the Order of the Bath. He attended Henry VII’s coronation and was educated in Margaret Beaufort’s household. He attended the wedding of Arthur Prince of Wales and Catherine of Aragon in 1501, where he wore an expensive gown.

            When Henry VIII became king, he became a member of the King’s Privy Council and attended the Field of the Cloth of Gold in 1520 with his wife, Eleanor. Stafford was married to Eleanor (daughter of Henry Percy) and the couple had four legit children and he had more children outside his marriage.

            Stafford wasn’t close friends to Henry, as he had Plantagenet blood and kept in contact with his extended family. In 1520, Stafford became a suspect of treason and Henry VIII had him investigated. Stafford was summoned to court in 1521 and was imprisoned in the Tower of London. He was tried and accused of listening to prophecies of the Kings death and intending to kill the king.

            Stafford was convicted of treason and was executed on 17 May 1521 on Tower Hill. Many believed Stafford to be innocent, Sir Thomas More said that Stafford’s servants were threatened and tortured to get a false confession against Stafford.

The true enigma was the man who cracked the code. Unlock the Secret, Win the War. Mathematician Alan Turing works with a team to break Germany's Enigma code and bring an end to World War II. Seeing how it all happened was really cool (Hodges book IS on hold at the library.) and how they got the "final clue" (if that's even true) - very cool. (I wish I was better with/knew more about codes.) Just the whole WWII, race-against-the-clock thing was right up my alley. The flashbacks to his youth - heartwrenching. The flashforwards to the 50's - heartbreaking. To know that's how Great Britain repayed him is the saddest thing ever; glad records have been declassified so we now know how much the world will forever be in his debt. (Loooved the reference to him in Saxondale - that that even happened.
