Remembering the toxic hellscape that was 2015-2019ish SU fandom and just how much hate the show got is really insane when you rewatch the show after it's been a while. Like the show is good what the hell were any of these people talking about
#do NOT quote me on those numbers i pulled them straight out of my ass#like the ending was rushed and the diamonds didnt get to be fully developed but liek#the whole reason that was the case is there was an entire 6th season planned#and then the show got axed early because rebecca sugar and crew refused the back down on the rupphire wedding.#and even rushedness aside like the point of the show was never that you should hug fascists and forgive people no matter what#the diamond were rose's (and his) dysfunctional family whose personal suffering became the basis for the cruelty of gem society#bismuth in The Real World would have been right to want to kill the diamonds as a force of revolution#but the point of the show is that even the most complicated people are still people who can change. even if you dont forgive them#even steven quartz universe the most loving boy in the world very obviously does not like being around the diamonds. but that is how it is#it was a children's show that emphasized compassion and communication and family as themes. of course steven didnt kill the diamonds lol#i really fully believe the stevenbomb format (which was not the crew's choice or fault) cooked peoples' brains#you had months between major arcs so every wrongdoing by a character had months to be warped and misinterpreted and so no resolution could#ever satisfy fans who were festering with their own opinions for way too long#like these arcs looking back are not that long and they resolve in fairly reasonable manners but they took fuckin forever in real time to#wrap up#and ppl on the internet with no other hobbies than arguing made the fandom suck to be in and gave su a bad name#even if you dont like steven universe i think the amount of vitriol thrown at the show is/was fucking INSANE for what it is lmaooo#people were so so jolly to accuse rebecca sugar (a jewish lady) of being a fascist/fash sympathizer and paint every writing shortcoming or#morally dubious character action as a sign of pure fuckin evil#ok that was a long ass fuckin rant in the tags i am so sorry i'm just kind of opinionated on this matter as i am all matters#i've been rewatching su with my dad lately and this very normal and well paced and fun watchthrough experience has been illuminating#just how insane and uncalled for the hellish discourse sphere around su was/is#i say was/is i have no idea what su discourse is like nowadays. i'm too scareds to look in the su crit tag

GF had never seen Steven Universe before and i was in the mood for a rewatch since i havent watched most of the episodes since they aired so we started watching it and ita actually so lovely to both revisit a series that i have a lot of nostalgia for AND see her experience everything about it for the first time without any spoilers or interactions with the fandom. Truly the best way to relive the story
#we're on season 3 atm#like right in the middle of the second stevenbomb from the summer of steven#charliemeon.txt#steven universe

Man I do think there’s something a little bananas about the recent movement of like. just dunking on and mocking the “su critical” tag. Because first of all, I have checked the actual /tagged/[insert tag name] page for it for funsies, and that things is very inactive these days, to the point where mocking it specifically is beating a dead horse. The tag itself isn’t dead, there are still posts in it, but were talking about a tag that gets posts like. maybe once or twice a week? tops? The point is this is a very unthreatening tag, it’s very much a ghost town and it’s kinda dumb to hold it up as The Great Evil Of Discourse when literally no one is discoursing there anymore.
And second of all like... “su critical” is a blacklist tag. It’s a tag you’re meant to pop into your blacklisting function so that you don’t have to see even mild complaints about SU. That’s how all “x media critical” tags work, they quarantine the complaining with an easy-to-block tag so that people complaining about a thing and people who are upset by complaints about a thing don’t have to interact with each other and come to blows. Complaining about the tag Existing is like complaining when people use a content warning tag for character hate. If you wipe tags like it out from existence, you’re not going to get “and then all the complaining magically goes away!” you’re going to get “the complaining is completely impossible to avoid”. (This is also why people would make discourse blogs for SU by the way - it gives them space to complain while allowing them to quarantine it all away from their main blog so that their followers and friends don’t get annoyed and people can more easily block the stuff).
#now obviously the tag quarantining measures weren't perfect in the same ways that no tag quarantines are#you got the /search/ pages picking up ALL mentions of a term with no room for blacklisting#and you got some people who don't bother with tagging or get mad when you ask them to tag or not use the main tags#but those aren't quite the same things as a blacklist tag Existing?#also SU had enough genuine mechanical and thematic issues that it was gonna get volatile no matter what#the show had pretty serious issues with racism from minute one for example#like holy SHIT the garnet and amethyst fusion is super horrifically racist in hindsight. who thought that was a good idea.#and any chance of less heated conversation about the show's fumbles went out the window when the stevenbombs#and hiatus hells started to rev up and turn the fanbase into a pressure cooker#to this day i maintain that the discourse wouldn't have been as infamously volatile as it is had it followed a regular schedule and pace#VS it vanishing into thin air for months on end only to reemerge with a binge bomb made exclusively of filler episodes#even the most flawless of works would be ruined by a release schedule like that

idk how many of my followers remember watching adventure time as it came out from the beginning, but I think people are starting forget that, from episode one, it aired new episodes weekly, without skipping more than 1-4 weeks per year, for YEARS. the entirety of season 1 and almost a third of season 2 aired in 2010 alone. hiatus weren’t a thing. It kept up this momentum until june 2015, when it did its own version of the “stevenbombs”, and then didn’t air anything new for 5 months after that. like. this is what they took from you.

i blame CN and the stevenbomb schedule for how ppl treated SU bc people straight up forgot what was going on in between bombs. ie we saw rose quartz' character growth backwards but bc her as pink diamond is whats focused on bc its what was in the late series.

Looking back at my time as an SU fan...
I think I finally get why I was so put off by the twist and ending of the show despite being obsessed with it.
I think I was more interested with the show's concept and fandom than the show itself. And I think I know why.
For one, I'd taken a 3-year break from cartoons in general during my last year of high school, but had gotten back into them during college in 2015. Gravity Falls was first, but I mainly watched it as a background show. With SU, I was watching it attently, not knowing what to expect. The concept of the show was so new and original that I immedately latched onto it and became obsessed with it. I loved the premise, the characters, and the story.
Second point, the fandom. Not only was I back into cartoons, but I had the addition of social media to dive even deeper into the shows. And SU was a goldmine for me. I read so many fanfics and read and wrote so many Reddit posts. I even started writing fanfiction because of it. It was my first time realling interacting with a fandom and I loved it. I loved being able to chat wth and talk to fellow SU fans.
Third, the hiatuses. With so much time in between StevenBombs, I spent most of it indulging in the fandom side of the show. Reading fanfics, looking at fanart, reading theories and stuff on Reddit, overanalysing everything. And the waits fueled my interest in the show even more! Unlike GF, which was available full to stream when I watched it, I, like every other fan, had to endure the infamous hiatuses that made the show somewhat infamous. I spent nearly two years binging fanfics and theories in between Bombs.
And fourth, the time period. I started SU while starting my first dorm semister in college, so I was experiencing SU while also experiencing the freedom of living on your own. In short, it was one of the happiest, most fun periods of my life and SU was the cherry on top.
I'm not kidding when I say that SU was a high for me. A high that I spent two years riding. It was all I could talk about, all I could think about. I was obsessed with it.
In all the excitment and fun, however, I think what happened was that I got TOO into the fanfics and their alternative ideas and paths for the show. I spent so long reading about what COULD happen that I stopped really focusing on what the show was actually about (forgiveness and non-violence). A lot of fics involved war and combat, so I started thinking (and hoping) the show would do that too. I wanted another Gem War.
So, you can imagine my disappointment when I realized where the show was going and how it wasn't (and hadn't really ever) been aligned with the headcannon I'd made for it. It left me in a funk for a while.
HOWEVER, as I explained in a previous post, I've come to terms and accepted the show's ending. I get it now. I understand what the writers were trying to do and appreciate their efforts. The show was never at fault, I just was too distracted by all the glitz and glamor surrounding it to realize what story they were really trying to tell.
I've seen the movie and thought it was okay. I still haven't gotten to finishing Future (and am debating on whether I want to do so due to the depressing subject matter), but I have no problems with it. Both are good shows and I still consider myself an SU fan.
It brought a lot of fun memories and moments, inspired me to take up writing fanfiction, and even helped me make a few friends in college. I'm glad I watched it and I hope it will be remembered for a long time as a revolutionary cartoon.

oh thank god i thought i was the only one who saw steven universe fans like that
what's wild is most of them were barely even fans by the end of the show's peak; they did tune into every stevenbomb but only to nitpick inane details of whichever new episode they liked the least and make borderline defamatory reaches about rebecca sugar's personal politics. it's why i disengaged from the fandom and it left such a bad taste in my mouth that it took a while for me to be able to enjoy the show again. i was there gandalf, when the 14 year olds running 'su crit' blogs like it was their full time job to drive the hate train bad faith engagement grew up a decade later into uwu tenderqueers who still shit a brick every time gay people have sex on their tv screen.
(also afaik sugar has yet to helm another project of su's scale since future ended and i truly wouldn't blame them if they never wanted to again. the entire fucking internet owes them an apology idc)

You know, it's funny when you've watched SMG4 a long time ago because the YT Channel recently made an Indie Animation studio of their own (they're most likely famous for "Murder Drones" and "The Amazing Digital Circus") if you haven't checked them out yet.
I recommend them.
I need to watch TADC (and Lackadaisy) aaa, I just have a problem with starting new shows or following new content, like when I finally began Steven Universe it wasn’t until the first Stevenbomb aired. I’ll watch them eventually tho 😩

people talk about how king gizzard release a lot of albums (they do) but not enough about how the results of their musical stevenbombs are also like. consistently their best material. changes, ice death, and laminated denim together would be more than solid enough to fill the entire discography of another band but for kg that's just October '22. what the hell
#king gizzard and the lizard wizard#changes and LD are also just genuinely some of the best albums they've ever put out#gondii alone!!!#ice death is good but i'm realizing i prefer it live so thank you KEXP for my life. magma live goes so hard
