idk how many of my followers remember watching adventure time as it came out from the beginning, but I think people are starting forget that, from episode one, it aired new episodes weekly, without skipping more than 1-4 weeks per year, for YEARS. the entirety of season 1 and almost a third of season 2 aired in 2010 alone. hiatus weren’t a thing. It kept up this momentum until june 2015, when it did its own version of the “stevenbombs”, and then didn’t air anything new for 5 months after that. like. this is what they took from you.

The very first time I drew Steven Universe characters was on my work calendar in 2016. :) It was a Stevenbomb and I was excited.
My coworkers put up with me being a cartoon nerd. Sometimes they made fun of me gently. Occasionally I would wear a Steven Universe shirt with a star on it and my boss would jokingly ask me if I worked at Hardee's or was affiliated with Vietnam.
Fun personal history. :)
(Technically I had drawn Garnet one other time for my Halloween party sign to put on the door in 2015 as part of a huge cartoon group. My very first Garnet below!)

i know everyone says this all the time and i'm not really adding anything new here but i really miss the hype of tv episodes airing weekly instead of having a whole season drop at once and then you have to rush to watch it to avoid spoilers + join the discussion before everyone's already moved onto the next big show. i still remember the first time steven universe did a stevenbomb (for those unfamiliar a "stevenbomb" was when they aired one new episode every day for a week) and i was so excited i was like holy shit this gives me something to look forward to every single day and gives the fandom so much to talk about at once while we wait for more. and then they started doing it so often that like nearly every time we got new episodes it was a stevenbomb and the idea totally lost its novelty and excitement for me. this was in like 2015 and now with how much streaming has grown almost all of tv is like this except worse. at least anime still does it right.

i blame CN and the stevenbomb schedule for how ppl treated SU bc people straight up forgot what was going on in between bombs. ie we saw rose quartz' character growth backwards but bc her as pink diamond is whats focused on bc its what was in the late series.

Looking back at my time as an SU fan...
I think I finally get why I was so put off by the twist and ending of the show despite being obsessed with it.
I think I was more interested with the show's concept and fandom than the show itself. And I think I know why.
For one, I'd taken a 3-year break from cartoons in general during my last year of high school, but had gotten back into them during college in 2015. Gravity Falls was first, but I mainly watched it as a background show. With SU, I was watching it attently, not knowing what to expect. The concept of the show was so new and original that I immedately latched onto it and became obsessed with it. I loved the premise, the characters, and the story.
Second point, the fandom. Not only was I back into cartoons, but I had the addition of social media to dive even deeper into the shows. And SU was a goldmine for me. I read so many fanfics and read and wrote so many Reddit posts. I even started writing fanfiction because of it. It was my first time realling interacting with a fandom and I loved it. I loved being able to chat wth and talk to fellow SU fans.
Third, the hiatuses. With so much time in between StevenBombs, I spent most of it indulging in the fandom side of the show. Reading fanfics, looking at fanart, reading theories and stuff on Reddit, overanalysing everything. And the waits fueled my interest in the show even more! Unlike GF, which was available full to stream when I watched it, I, like every other fan, had to endure the infamous hiatuses that made the show somewhat infamous. I spent nearly two years binging fanfics and theories in between Bombs.
And fourth, the time period. I started SU while starting my first dorm semister in college, so I was experiencing SU while also experiencing the freedom of living on your own. In short, it was one of the happiest, most fun periods of my life and SU was the cherry on top.
I'm not kidding when I say that SU was a high for me. A high that I spent two years riding. It was all I could talk about, all I could think about. I was obsessed with it.
In all the excitment and fun, however, I think what happened was that I got TOO into the fanfics and their alternative ideas and paths for the show. I spent so long reading about what COULD happen that I stopped really focusing on what the show was actually about (forgiveness and non-violence). A lot of fics involved war and combat, so I started thinking (and hoping) the show would do that too. I wanted another Gem War.
So, you can imagine my disappointment when I realized where the show was going and how it wasn't (and hadn't really ever) been aligned with the headcannon I'd made for it. It left me in a funk for a while.
HOWEVER, as I explained in a previous post, I've come to terms and accepted the show's ending. I get it now. I understand what the writers were trying to do and appreciate their efforts. The show was never at fault, I just was too distracted by all the glitz and glamor surrounding it to realize what story they were really trying to tell.
I've seen the movie and thought it was okay. I still haven't gotten to finishing Future (and am debating on whether I want to do so due to the depressing subject matter), but I have no problems with it. Both are good shows and I still consider myself an SU fan.
It brought a lot of fun memories and moments, inspired me to take up writing fanfiction, and even helped me make a few friends in college. I'm glad I watched it and I hope it will be remembered for a long time as a revolutionary cartoon.

oh thank god i thought i was the only one who saw steven universe fans like that
what's wild is most of them were barely even fans by the end of the show's peak; they did tune into every stevenbomb but only to nitpick inane details of whichever new episode they liked the least and make borderline defamatory reaches about rebecca sugar's personal politics. it's why i disengaged from the fandom and it left such a bad taste in my mouth that it took a while for me to be able to enjoy the show again. i was there gandalf, when the 14 year olds running 'su crit' blogs like it was their full time job to drive the hate train bad faith engagement grew up a decade later into uwu tenderqueers who still shit a brick every time gay people have sex on their tv screen.
(also afaik sugar has yet to helm another project of su's scale since future ended and i truly wouldn't blame them if they never wanted to again. the entire fucking internet owes them an apology idc)

You know, it's funny when you've watched SMG4 a long time ago because the YT Channel recently made an Indie Animation studio of their own (they're most likely famous for "Murder Drones" and "The Amazing Digital Circus") if you haven't checked them out yet.
I recommend them.
I need to watch TADC (and Lackadaisy) aaa, I just have a problem with starting new shows or following new content, like when I finally began Steven Universe it wasn’t until the first Stevenbomb aired. I’ll watch them eventually tho 😩

Hell back when I was a kid sometimes a season was 56 episodes.
A big part of me feels like this is why you don't see as many webtoons or webcomics anymore, because the standards are so high that anything makeable isn't watchable.
Like, a lot of shows now have the production of cinema and like, that's gotta be more work right?
Then there's the obvious fact we're all broke, like I bet'cha things like Newgrounds and Youtube wouldn't've died if everyone had a support network instead of had to go to college and get a job.
(Tho I'm sure there's plenty of people who grew out of entertainment)
I think the problem's from the floor to the roof, expectations for entertainment are higher than they need to be and everyone's fighting for survival.
Heck, how much does HD/4K make it harder to produce than whatever analog was? Like that's my gut feeling at least.
No idea why stevenbombing became a practice tho, like who does that benefit?
Well, I guess since only the big wigs make money the first few months (which is why shows get cancelled and removed from streaming services, to make sure only the company gets money, not workers) that's one big reason.
But why do people put up with it? I'd just get fucking tired cuz I did and am and I don't know what's new anymore I'm rewatching old stuff forever cuz I don't gotta pay attention.
Aunno mayn.
no offence but the reason tumblr is “dying” is, well, yes, of course the cursed like/reblog ratio and the change in user behaviour (because of people being used to how instagram and tiktok work) BUT also the lack of weekly shows. i say it with my whole chest, they don't produce captivating and engaging stupid weekly tv shows anymore because streaming killed that so you have spikes of activity here when Something happens in general fandom or up to three days after a new season of whatever drops and then it's a wasteland. this is obviously an old woman yelling at a cloud missing supernatural and the vampire diaries and pretty little liars and all these other shows type of post but honestly give me back weekly tv shows where i have something to watch for 40 minutes almost every day of the week after work so then i can read and reblog it on tumblr give it back for the sake of my sanity
