Yeah the Crew definitely kept that under wraps for so long. And outright said Pink wasn't Rose.

I really feel like Viv is gonna pull some Rose Quartz/PD shit with Lilith/Rosie, where she'll magically change her appearance to reflect being Lilith.

For a show she's "hyper critical" of (or at least hates?) She sure is doing a piss poor job trying to do her own version of it.

Oh wait, the similarities are there! Broadway Actors, check. Shitty twist that SU did far better? Check. Songs/musicals? Check. Trying to have Sinners redeemed (Steven trying to redeem all gems?) Check.

Except Rebecca is a way better musician, better writer (even though I have issues with her writing), and a better fucking human being.

God Viv, I bet this is subconsciously her trying to compare herself to Rebecca.

"I can take your concept and ideas and execute them far better!"

Except she can't.

Because she's a terrible writer.

And a terrible human being.

And a terrible musician, and a terrible showrunner, and a terrible friend...

You're no Rebecca Sugar, Viv. You never will be. You'll never pull off a character like Rose Quartz, and although you can nab the same voice actress, you'll never pull off a character like Spinel.

What if the Aquamarine we know of was still an enemy of the Crystal gem allied Aquamarines?

Isn't she in canon? Or has it been so long since I've watched the Steven Universe shows I've forgotten something? If you're speaking purely hypothetically in this little world where the other Aquamarines are allied with them, then I think eventually she would be drawn in as well. There's only so long you can resist and the gems- all the gems- are clearly a very socially minded, hive like/pack like race. They don't like being alone and they don't do it well. I think the 'peer pressure', so to speak, would eventually get to her, and she would be a rather grumpy anti-hero figure. A bit like what we see Jasper sort of showing tendencies of.

Which SU defense videos were you watching? I could use some positivity tbh

Two videos made by Hiding in Private break down notorious SU-criticism videos

First one is taking down the arguments of EzPz and E;R, two really bigoted content creators that gained WAAY too much traction considering they're just repackaging racism/homophobia/misogyny as 'funny memes'

Next is critiquing the SU analysis by Lily Orchid whose video was full of bad-faith interpretations, misunderstanding of how cartoon plots work and poisoned the discourse on the show for a good while.

There are a few minor gripes I have with how HidinginPrivate handles some critiques in the latter video but they overall summarize a lot of my issues with SU-discourse. It's a good show!! I'm tired of pretending that it's cringe!!!

Rosie magically transforming/altering her appearance, revealing she was Lilith all along, is very similar to the PD/Rose twist. Also, the main characters mom. Except it's shittier.

Charlie believing there is good in everyone is very similar to Steven's belief in seeing the good in everyone. But they're also both not naive wimps.

Broadway actors are in the show, except Rebecca didn't scoop up every single Broadway actor and use them as advertisement for her show.

Charlie gets her musical flare from her father, much like Steven, who, on many occasions, has asked his dad to sing him songs. Literally says in an episode, "You shouldn't have raised me to love music so much."

Both shows are very musical, except Rebecca didn't clog every single episode with a song because she's very thoughtful and meditative with her creativity. Viv just wants songs because "muh Broadway Actors"

Roo being a "looming distant threat" is very similar to how White Diamond was treated, as "her presence was felt throughout the entire show".

You can't deny the similarities, whether they're intentional or not.

And I bet we'll see more of 'em as this train wreck rolls out.

Yeah, that was ridiculous. Not everything is meant to be hard, irrefutable evidence against Viv; sometimes people just speculate on things we can't prove. Viv tends to rip off anything she thinks she can get away with and anything that impacts her strongly, for better or worse, and she definitely hates Rebecca Sugar.

Honestly, he's Steven. He'd be endlessly patient, understanding and calm- with the help of the other CGs, he'd be able to remember and understand, I think, that they are undergoing a huge change and unlearning a lot of toxic lessons. We do see Steven hit his hard limit with people's bullshit from time to time, and I'm sure that would happen at some point, but ultimately he'd deal with it the way he deals with everyone else; by being the kind, patient, gentle-natured sweetheart we know he is.

Do you have any thoughts about the Love square Ship? I just realized that a huge reason why they are happening is because they are 'fated to be together' just cuz they're ladybug and chat noir. Aren't the writers shooting themselves on their feet? 'Cause it just means that Adrienette only love each other because they're LadyNoir.

The love square has fallen into a trope I like to call the Sk8er Boi trap. This is a reference to the opening question of Avril Lavigne's famous song:

He was a boy She was a girl Can I make it any more obvious?

Yes. Yes you can make it more obvious! I'm not going to ship these two based on gender alone! Give them depth! Give them substance! Make me care.

To be fair, Miraculous didn't start this way. The first two seasons of the show did a decent job setting up the crushes. It wasn't amazing, but it was enough to see the potential, especially when you paired it with the fun of identity shenanigans. Those early seasons also felt like a promise that more depth would come with time as is typical in a slow burn.

Instead, as time went on, the crushes became ever more superficial because the show has committed to maintaining a status quo that doesn't allow for a deep, meaningful romance. Without that depth to really sell the ship, Miraculous is relying on the audience shipping the love square because Adrien and Marinette are the endgame couple and that's about it. The quality of the relationship doesn't matter. All that matters is that the show says that they're meant to be. It's disappointing, but annoyingly common.

For reasons beyond my understanding, there is a decent subset of the population who are happy to play this game. If the writing says, "these two are meant to be," then this audience is happy accept that no matter how little substance the couple has. Heck, they'll ship couples that are straight up toxic!

The audience in question seems to be here for the drama and the passion, not the love and depth. Give them twists that come out of no where! Give them ridiculous miscommunication! Give them poor characterization! They'll take it all so long as it's shocking and dramatic. I don't get it, but it's not a fringe preference. It's straight up popular right now. Couples like this dominate mainstream romance, YA, NA, and romantasy. They're all obsessed with drama over depth, but that's the opposite of what I want. I will take depth over drama every day.

My ideal romance is a cute boring couple made interesting by the extraordinary circumstances they're dealing with. I thought that's what the love square was going to be, but I have given up on that hope. It started to really die in season four and season five straight up killed it.

You'd think that a show aimed at kids would be free of unhealthy romances since there are a lot of topics a Y-7 show can't touch, but apparently not! Season five's love square feels like it's an awkward, kiddified version of the kind of trends that have made me avoid mainstream Romance, YA, New Adult, and Romantasy for the past few years. Every book I've tried made me rage (insert reductive "are the allos okay" joke here). So, to answer your question:

Aren't the writers shooting themselves in their feet?

Not really. They're not writing a deep nuanced romance, but they are writing the type of frustrating, drama-laden romance that some people adore. As long as a subset of those people are willing to watch Miraculous, the show will be successful. I don't get it, but Goodreads has shown me that people love this shit, so I'm stuck waiting for the current trends to die off or for a new genre to pop up that leans towards what I like. Such is life. It's not like there's nothing good out there. It's just harder to find since it's not on trend right now. Plus there's always fanfic! That's my main source of romance. I look for other things in original fiction.
