I saw some people getting upset about Jasper still being a villain in Steven Universe Future, and while that’s a valid perspective I think this is the best direction for her to go. Yes I want her to get a redemption eventually, but it’s too soon for her to turn around for a while. Jasper hasn’t gone on the same journey of self reflection that all the other redeemed villains did, so for her to suddenly be one of the good guys wouldn’t make sense. Peridot had to learn how to value the Earth and chose to protect it, Lapis isolated herself until she felt safe enough to reach out to her friends, the Diamonds each had their own arcs about coping with Pink’s loss (and I suspect White’s hasn’t really ended), Spinel threw an epic tantrum that nearly destroyed the planet before coming around, etc. All of them had to learn that what they were doing before wasn’t working and make a choice to change and heal. All of them had Steven to guide them to that point.

Jasper hasn’t been able to do that yet. Before she was bubbled she was having a total meltdown. She had made increasingly destructive choices that led to her getting corrupted and bubbled. The next time she’s free, the rules she lived her life by are gone and nothing makes sense. The Diamonds are on Steven’s side, the corrupted gems are healed, and Steven himself is a Diamond. All of this leaves Jasper feeling lost, apparently for the past two years. Now when we see her in the promos she’s chosen to lash out like she always has, because that’s all she has left.

Could Jasper still have a change of heart and get better? I think she could, but it’s going to take a while for her to get there.

So...Steven Universe is ending soon, for real this time. What’s the mood now? I honestly don’t know what I’m going to do. This show meant so much to me and has brought me closer to so many friends and I can’t fathom it being completely over.
