From Super Bowl Champion To Horseman : The Steve ‘ Mongo ’ McMichael Story
Hello Everyone! If you know me and have followed me for a while on here or on any social media platforms, I’m a football fan. This article is going to be a special one. This is the story of Football Star turned Wrestler , Steve ‘ Mongo ’ McMichael.
Stephen Douglas ‘ Steve ’ Michael was born on October 17, 1957 in Houston , Texas. His parents divorced when he was a year old and his mother married an oil executive named EV McMichael. Steve would take his stepfather’s last name. McMichael is the middle sibling of his family with an older brother and two younger sisters. As a Senior at Freer High School in Freer , Texas, McMichael was involved in multiple sports. He was on the football team, golf team , tennis team , basketball team , baseball team, and ran track . Thus, McMichael originally wanted to play baseball , with his position being a catcher. With a batting average of .450 , the Cincinnati Reds and St.Louis Cardinals were hoping to draft him to their team. He was offered 75 football scholarships from different colleges due to his work on the Freer football team. However, he chose to play as a Defensive Tackle for the Texas Longhorns.
McMichael was a Texas Longhorn from 1976 to 1979. During his Freshman season , the death of his stepfather affected his time on the field. He went to be chosen as an All American and the Defensive MVP for the 1979 Hula Bowl in his Senior season. McMichael was also the back up place kicker during the 1977 season. He was also chosen to be the Southwest Conference Choice in 1978-79, and the Longhorns’ team MVP in 1979. Nevertheless, he would declare himself for the 1980 NFL Draft. He was drafted by the New England Patriots as the 73rd Pick in Round 3 of the draft. He was cut from the team before a second season with them.
McMichael was picked up by the Chicago Bears as a free agent signing in 1981. Coach Neill Armstrong made him a starting Defensive Tackle after an injury took out Alan Page. In 1985 , McMichael would help lead the Bears to a Super Bowl victory alongside Walter Payton and Ron Rivera ( former coach of the Carolina Panthers and Washington Commanders ) . He was selected to the NFC Pro Bowl team in 1986 and 1987. He joined the Green Bay Packers in 1994 before retiring the same year. In 1985 , he would meet Pageant Queen, Debra Marshall and they would soon marry. He would also earn his nicknames , ‘ Mongo ’ , ‘ Ming The Merciless/Ming ’.
In 1995, Mongo would make an appearance at WrestleMania 11. He would be ringside in support of Lawrence Taylor as he was in a match against Bam Bam Bigelow. He was selected alongside other players to make sure that Ted DiBiase’s Million Dollar Corporation would not interfere in the match in order to help Bigelow win. He would be invited to Monday Night RAW for the March 20 episode to give commentary. He would also be involved in a brawl with Kama Mustafa ( Papa Shango/Kama/The Godfather ) . Nevertheless, he would be signed to World Championship Wrestling the same year.
Mongo would make his WCW debut as a Babyface Color Commentator on the premiere episode of Monday Nitro on September 4, 1995. He would be on the Commentary team alongside Lead Broadcaster , Executive Producer, and Senior Vice President of WCW, Eric Bischoff, and Heel Commentator, Bobby ‘ The Brain ’ Heenan. Fans would watch McMichael and Heenan constantly argue as Mongo cheered for the Babyface wrestlers and Heenan would cheer for the Heel wrestlers. He would also bring his dog , Pepe, to the shows. In 1996, he would begin a storyline with Ric Flair and the Four Horseman. It started when Flair was flirting with Debra, McMichael’s wife , who would be at ringside. He soon would challenge Flair and his tag team partner , Arn Anderson , to a match at The Great American Bash. Mongo’s tag team partner was fellow NFL alum, Kevin Greene.
During their match , Debra and Kevin Greene’s wife would be chased to the locker room by Miss Elizabeth and Woman ( Nancy Benoit ) , who were the valets/managers for Flair and Anderson. Debra would soon return to the ring alongside Woman and Elizabeth. She would have a briefcase full of money and a 4 Horsemen shirt for her husband . Mongo would take the briefcase and turn Heel on Greene by hitting him with it. He went on to have storylines with the Dungeon of Doom and Jeff Jarrett. The feud with Jarrett would be over the love of Debra. This would lead to a match at Superbrawl 7. During the match , Debra would help Jarrett get the win over her husband and Jarrett would be a Horseman. Jarrett would soon be put out of the 4 Horseman in 1997, with Debra following him. During his time in WCW , he would win the United States Championship. His final appearance on would be on the February 8 , 1999 episode of Monday Nitro. He would divorce Debra in 1998. Mongo would make his return to the Squared Circle in TNA as a guest referee for a Monster’s Ball match at Bound For Glory. He would retire from wrestling in 2008.
Mongo would go on to marry Misty Davenport in 2001 and become a father to daughter , Macy , in 2008. He would be inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2010. He would also make a return to football as a coach for the Chicago Slaughter , an Indoor Football League team , from 2007 to 2013 , when the program was shut down. In 2021, McMichael would announce that he was diagnosed with ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease. In 2024, he would be inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame .
My Final Thoughts:
I wanted to do this article to highlight Mongo McMichael’s careers as a football star and a wrestler. While I was doing my research for this article , I gained more respect for him. He had two storied careers . I kept fighting for him to be in the Pro Football Hall of Fame along with other fans and it happened. I wanted to say congratulations Mongo ! This is well deserved!
Love You All,
- Kay

Book It! Four Horsemen A Timeline History by Dick Bourne, published by Mid-Atlantic Gateway Books
Book It! Four Horsemen A Timeline History by Dick Bourne, published by Mid-Atlantic Gateway Books
Robert Segedy When you think about the various groups that have been formed in pro wrestling, one that stands out far above all others is that of the Four Horsemen. The group that formed naturally against a singular enemy became the premiere heel faction of all time. To understand the greatness that was captured at the time, we need to trace the roots of the group at its start. At first, they…

Hunter Hearst Helmsley/Eric Bischoff x Fem Reader- "You Turned the Tables on Me"
For those about to read this fanfiction, you can either choose to ship yourself with Hunter Hearst Helmsley or Eric Bischoff, or both.
________________________________________________________
Wrestlers, wrestling valets and managers will sometimes join commentary, and that's always such fun.
On a "Monday Night Raw" episode that aired in the summer of 1997 (or, if it's Eric Bischoff you want, a "WCW Nitro" episode that aired at the beginning of 1998), Hunter Hearst Helmsley/Eric Bischoff was sitting at the commentary table, and he wasn't the only one there.
Hunter had his long hair hanging down in this episode.
With a smile on your face, you sat down on the commentary table in front of Hunter/Eric, where one of your legs crossed above your other leg.
You still kept a smile on your face when you sat down in front of Hunter, your eyes looking at him.
Hunter/Eric, Jim Ross and Jerry Lawler (or, for WCW, Larry Zybyszko and Steve "Mungo" McMichael) and were taken by surprise and slightly jumped when you sat down on the commentary table, their eyes growing wide and eyebrows raising.
Fans in the audience roared and popped out of their seats with smiles on their faces when you sat down on the commentary table.
You were wearing a long evening gown that reached your ankles during this episode.
If you could, you'd wear a really short negligee/nighty with matching panties underneath or even nothing but a towel.
Hell, if there was a sexy wrestler who was an opponent on commentary---like Shawn Michaels---you'd sit in front of him at the commentary table.
This moment of you sitting down at the commentary table in front of Hunter/Eric was a recreation from a "Three's Company" episode where Janet sits down on a desk.
________________________________________________________
At the beginning of this month, I planned on typing and posting these fanfictions on certain days this month, but I didn't!

WORLD WRESTLING ENTERTAINMENT/FEDERATION MAGAZINE: May 2008
ECW INTERVIEW
O.M.G.!
ECW’s resident mouthpiece, Joey Styles, weighs in on “new” versus “original.” the making of Stone Cold Steve Austin and gross-out classic matches he just can’t bring himself to rewatch.
BY MATT CHRISTENSEN PHOTOGRAPHY BY BOB CROSLIN
“I'M NOT GOOD WITH GORE. I DIDN’T EVEN WATCH SEE NOT EVIL!”
[“The room service here is dreadful.”]
“New ECW.” “Original ECW.” When are people just gonna say “ECW” and leave it at that?
Absolutely never. Diehard “Original” ECW fans still exist all over. Whenever I'm noticed in the Northeast, it’s rarely due to my involvement with the new ECW.
Would the ECW stars of today be able to thrive, or even survive in the original ECW?
There are plenty of Superstars now who would’ve fit in perfectly in the old ECW. Guys like CM Punk, Chavo Guerrero, Shelton Benjamin and Elijah Burke would have thrived. They would’ve just been doing more hardcore things, maybe two times a week, instead of having spectacular athletic matches five times a week.
Is the revamped ECW the reason we don’t get as many “OH MY GOD!?!”’s?
No, I save it for special moments. At WrestleMania 23, when the ECW Originals defeated The New Breed, that was special. It was career validation for those four guys. Only RVD had competed at WrestleMania before, and his teammates, Sabu, Sandman and Tommy Dreamer, probably never, ever expected to do so. It was a very special night, so I leaned into Tazz and said, “There’s only one thing left to say…’OH MY GOD!’
What ECW matches made even you gag?
There are two classic matches that I never, ever need to watch again–one at Born To Be Wired, which featured Sabu vs. Terry Funk in a ring with barbwire instead of ring ropes. And Beulah McGillicutty vs. Bill Alphonso in 1997; I’ve never seen that much blood in my life. Fonzie actually had to be rushed to the hospital to get more blood put in him. And with Sabu and Funk, Terry almost lost an eye. I’m not good with gore. I didn’t even watch See No Evil!
Which Superstar are you most proud to say that ECW “discovered”?
Guys like Rey Mysterio, Tazz and Chris Jericho really broke out and made an impact on the wrestling world in ECW. But I'm specifically proud that ECW is where “Stunning” Steve Austin became “Stone Cold” Steve Austin. It’s where he began picking up the microphone and being himself. Mick Foley was also held back in WCW because he didn’t fit its image of a champion, but he could spellbind an entire viewing audience. ECW let him do just that.
Are there any underutilized Superstars in ECW today?
Up until very recently, people had given up on Tommy Dreamer and Stevie Richards. Maybe because they were perceived as being too old, or maybe because people were trying to forget about the old ECW. But those two have so much to offer, and they’re finally getting the credit they deserve.
As a commentator, who are your role models? And please don’t say Mongo McMichael…
I’ve learned a lot from Michael Cole since joining WWE, actually. But I grew up listening to two people–Vince McMahon doing WWE commentary and Jim Ross working with NWA. I always aspired to be a combination of the two by fusing Vince McMahon's enthusiasm with Jim Ross’s credibility and knowledge.
Best piece of advice from Good Ol’ J.R.?
When I first started, JR sat down with me for five straight hours [HOLDS UP ALL FIVE FINGERS ON HIS HAND] and helped me understand what being a WWE announcer was about. Initially, I couldn’t grasp the style, and he didn’t hesitate to help educate me. Without Jim Ross’ help, I wouldn't have lasted more than a few weeks in WWE.
How does two-man annoying compare to the one-man show you rain in the original ECW?
It’s been my life-long dream to be a professional wrestling announcer. I’m most proud of ECW’s first pay-per-view–Barely Legal. That was the first time I ever did live television. We had some Japanese wrestlers on the card, and I actually asked them to put me in some of their signature holds, albeit lightly, so that I'd know what to look for during the match. After the show, I was in years. I knew that night was going to make or break my career.
Is the passion still there after 15 years in the business?
When your dream becomes your job, sometimes you become numb to it. But, without question, the road to WrestleMania always makes me feel like a 13-year-old kid again. For the entire WrestleMania weekend, though I'm privileged to be calling the action, I’m there as a fan.
SPEED ROUND
Styles rates famous sports catchphrases
“BOO-YAH!” - STUART SCOTT
It definitely distinguished him on ESPN. When it’s forced, it’s obvious, but when it’s genuine, I think it’s great.
“HE COULD…GO…ALL...THE…WAY!” - CHRIS BERMAN
I love it. Chris Berman is the voice of ESPN.
“IT’S AWESOME, BABY!” - DICK VITALE
This one is probably a bit overused. And “Awesome, with a capital ‘A’” is definitely too much. But hey, it’s Dick Vitale, so who am I to critique him?
“DO YOU BELIEVE IN MIRACLES?” - AL MICHAELS
This is one of those lines that will live forever. I actually stole it when Mikey Whipwreck won the ECW World Heavyweight Championship in 1995.
“BUSINESS IS ABOUT TO PICK UP!” - JIM ROSS
It’s such a distinct sentence; it lets you know that something’s about to happen. In fact, every time I say, “Things are getting more interesting by the moment,” It’s my homage to JR’s signature phrase.

Happy Heavenly Birthday to the late , great , ‘ King of Harts ’ , Owen Hart. Owen would have been 59 years old today.
Owen Hart is the youngest brother of Bret ‘ The Hitman ’ Hart and son of Stampede Wrestling Promoters , Stu and Helen Hart. (Stampede Wrestling was a promotion in Canada founded by Stu Hart , the Patriarch of the Hart family in 1948. The wrestling school for the promotion was known as The Dungeon. It has many graduates such as Bret Hart , Owen Hart, Chris Jericho , Davy Boy Smith , and the only female graduate, Natalya. ) Owen started his wrestling career in high school in 1983. He placed 4th in wrestling in college at the University of Calgary in 1984. He worked for Stampede wrestling and earned title of Rookie of The Year for Pro Wrestling Illustrated ( PWI ) Magazine in 1987. However, he left Stampede to be a member of the New Japan Pro Wrestling ( NJPW) roster in 1988.
Owen was signed to Vince McMahon’s World Wrestling Federation ( WWF) in 1988 , with a superhero gimmick known as ‘ The Blue Blazer ’. Nevertheless , this gimmick would be the one to take his life eleven years later. He returned to Stampede and NJPW in 1989. Hart made his return to the WWF in 1991 , teaming alongside Brother In Law, Jim ‘ The Anvil ’ Neidhart ( father of current WWE Superstar, Natalya) and calling themselves , The New Foundation. Neidhart was teaming with Owen’s older brother , Bret, before Bret decided to try out a run as a Singles wrestler. Hart also teamed with Koko B Ware as High Energy. Owen followed in Bret’s footsteps as a Singles wrestler in 1993.
Owen was in a storyline with Bret from 1993 to 1995 to see who was the better wrestler in the family. After Survivor Series 1993 , Owen changed his gear from colorful to Bret’s signature pink and black to be like him. He also decided to use the Sharpshooter, Bret’s finisher, to add to this new Heel gimmick. He added , ‘ King Of Harts ’ , to the gear after winning King of The Ring in 1994. His original nickname was ‘ The Rocket ’. The Hart Brothers had a match at Wrestlemania X the same year. They also had a Steel Cage match at Summerslam of the same year. In 1995 , he teamed with Yokozuna and was managed by Jim Cornette as well as Mr.Fuji to form ‘ Camp Cornette ’ , winning the WWF Tag Team Championships.
In 1996-1997 , Owen teamed with Bret , Brother in Laws, Davey Boy Smith ( The British Bulldog) , Jim ‘ The Anvil ’ Neidhart , and family friend , ‘ Loose Cannon ’ Brian Pillman ( father of WWE NXT wrestler , Lexis King ) , to reform the Hart Foundation. Owen defeated Rocky Maivia ( The Rock ) , to win his first Intercontinental Championship for the first time in 1997. He also was tag team champions with The British Bulldog the same year, thus , they lost the titles to Stone Cold Steve Austin and Shawn Michaels. After the Montreal Screwjob , Owen returned with a new gimmick , The Black Hart. This gimmick meant he wanted to get justice for Bret and his family against Vince McMahon and D-Generation X ( DX) , mainly Shawn Michaels. He joined the Nation of Domination the same year and ended his run with the faction in 1998.
Owen soon formed a tag team with best friend , Jeff Jarrett , in 1998. He decided to use the Blue Blazer gimmick to develop the storyline. He kept denying that he was the superhero and he claimed to be ‘ retired ’. Whole doing this , Hart and Jarrett defeated Ken Shamrock and The Big Bossman in 1999 to win the tag team championships. Their manager at the time was Debra McMichael , also known as Debra.
On May 23,1999 at the WWF Over The Edge Pay Per View in Kansas City, Missouri, would be the last time Owen Hart would ever be the Blue Blazer . While being lowered into the ring for a match against The Godfather for the Intercontinental Championship, he fell almost 80 feet into the ring. This was thought to be a part of his dramatic and funny entrance for the character. However, it was not. He landed on his chest on the top rope before being thrown into the ring. Owen James Hart passed away at the hospital from Internal Bleeding due to his injuries at the age of 34. He left behind his wife Martha, and two children , Oje and Athena , as well as his huge family. The tribute episode of Monday Night Raw for Owen aired May 24, 1999. This episode of the show was called RAW is Owen, with wrestlers giving their memories of him and Steve Austin coming down to the ring and saluting him by holding a beer to his photo. Jeff Jarrett defeated The Godfather and became the new Intercontinental Champion. Jarrett soon screamed his name after getting the belt.
On an episode of WCW Monday Nitro , Bret Hart wanted to face Chris Benoit as a tribute to his fallen brother in the same arena where Owen died. This happened October 5th , 1999, five months after Owen passed away.
Martha Hart is currently keeping her husband’s legacy alive with All Elite Wrestling. In 2021 , she alongside AEW President , Tony Khan, announced the Owen Hart Cup Tournament. Winners of this tournament include Adam Cole and Britt Baker. Owen is also a character in AEW Fight Forever.
My Final Thoughts:
Owen Hart was a once in a lifetime wrestler. If he didn’t pass away so young and tragically, he would have went on to be a world champion. Owen , thank you for everything. Even though I didn’t get to watch you live and I was an infant when you passed away, you still made an impact on me as a fan. I watch your matches on the internet and streaming services. You’re one of the coolest people. You will always be to me. Happy Heavenly Birthday , I and many others will always love and miss you. This post is my tribute to you. - Kay
