Hi! I was wondering if you knew anything in particular about the Lincoln Park Zoo- I think it’s the only zoo I’ve ever been to that’s free/no admission! Especially considering the scale. The only thing that concerned me was that their polar bears seem to have a history of stereotypical behaviors (pacing, primarily) which I saw while I was there, but again, I’m a total outsider to the actual inner workings of the facility. Sorry if this is too vague, haha.
There's a couple city zoos like that with free entrance! It's a cool option, and indicative of the city providing enough funding for the facility to operate without the need for income from tickets. (Sometimes the way things are set up, I think they can be required to stay free). The St. Louis Zoo is another!
I don't know a lot about the Lincoln Park Zoo beyond what I've seen as a guest. I've gone a couple times and haven't seen anything that stood out to me as major red flags, but that's just from a public perspective and not a comprehensive assessment. They're AZA-accredited and have been for a long time, which is an indication of their general ethos and operations. I can't speak to more than that about their quality, unfortunately.
You're right about the polar bear stereotypies - that's a thing I've seen for myself. The thing is, with stereotypies - and especially with polar bears - they're not necessarily an indicator of current welfare or quality of life.
For folk who are new to the blog or unfamiliar with the concept, in animal care, a stereotypy is a "repetitive, invariant behavior pattern with no obvious goal or function." Examples often seen are repetitive pacing, head-bobbing, licking or chewing, and rocking or swaying. (It's important to note that not all repetitive behaviors are stereotypic behaviors - e.g. animals may pace when excited and anticipating the arrival of a keeper). Stereotypies can be an indicator of chronically poor welfare, under-stimulating enrichment, or inappropriate captive environments, but the important thing to know about that is that they often persist after the problem that caused them is resolved. So you can take a polar bear or an elephant that picked up a stereotypic behavior in one zoo and move them to another, much better situation, and they may still continue the stereotypy.
(The fact that stereotypies can be indicators of previous, but not current, welfare problems is a really important nuance that is often left out of discussions. Sometimes they're called "zoochosis", which anti-captivity folk define as "the psychosis induced by captivity"... but that's a very unscientific approach, and doesn't facilitate productive discussion or attempts to identify causes and alleviate the behavior. Zoochosis is nothing but a useless manipulative buzzword, folks.)
Bears in general seem to be prone to stereotypies in captive situations. I've seen some recent research that hypothesizes it's likely due to a lack of ability to engage in normal behavioral sequences, such as foraging. Polar bears seem especially prone to it. One 2013 study found that of the 55 polar bears in North America they assessed, 85% engaged in stereotypical pacing. It might be because they natural cover such a huge range in the wild that older, smaller exhibits haven't allowed them to move as much as they need to; it could also be due to a historical lack of appropriate enrichment. We don't really know, because there's so many potential factors, and the long lifespan of polar bears means longitudinal studies of multiple generations take a very long time.
These are both things the industry is working on fixing: newer polar bear exhibits are built to be much larger and more complex, and there's been a heavy focus in the literature for at least a decade on finding ways to reduce stereotypies by providing engaging enrichment and increasing bears' activity levels. Lincoln Park Zoo's polar bear habitat was renovated in 2016, and - while it looks rather boring to me, as a guest - it was apparently designed to allow for a lot of activity range and polar bear-specific needs.
Their current bears are both about 20 years old, and were transferred to the Lincoln Park Zoo after the new habitat was completed. It's entirely plausible the bears arrived with stereotypies from their previous facilities, given that the emphasis on improving polar bear care is younger than they are. Here's a photo I took there a couple years ago, of Talini (I think), engaging in a repetitive head tossing behavior. It's definitely hard to watch, as a guest, and I don't remember if they had signage up about it.

That all being said, I wouldn't judge the whole zoo based on the polar bear stereotypies, because there's so much at play there in terms of history and the evolution of care for the species. What's important is how they're handling it, and what they're doing to help encourage more normative behavior from the bears. Given the amount of research and effort the zoo field has put into addressing the topic in polar bears for the last decade, it's highly probable that a lot of staff time goes into helping reduce the amount of time those bears spend engaging in stereotypies.

I think fandom has fem!bingqiu all wrong. If there was a genderbent PIDW, Shen Qingqiu would be the cartoonishly evil slutty woman with the huge bust and perfect makeup that screams *EVIL* (because only evil women know how to wear makeup), and Luo Binghe would be the dainty, near-virginal one to fulfill the gender stereotype of whore = evil, virgin = good.
#svsss#pidw is a male power fantasy where lbh is supposed to be every woman’s dream guy#and sqq’s behavior and demeanor is supposed to be a turn-off to women#if this was genderbent then lbh should still be the stereotypical ‘good girl’ fantasy#because she’s the hero of the story who gets the guy because she ‘deserves’ it through her suffering#whereas sqq is gonna give every negative stereotype of a straight woman you can find

being nonhuman kinda feels like zoochosis in a way,,, like an animal raised in captivity in a non suitable enviroment who would never survive in the wild pacing around in circles for hours on end because they know it just isnt right
#wholewolf-rants#for those who dont know heres a definition of zoochosis#form of psychosis that develops in animals held captive in zoos#Most often it manifests in what are called stereotypic behaviors#which are often monotonous obsessive repetitive actions that serve no purpose.#alterhuman#nonhuman#otherkin#kinmunity#therianthropy#therian community

The horror of Gaz x Reader comes from the bones of Hider in the house and @/pricegouge absolute amazing horror fics that have inspired me.
Ever since you inherited your aunt’s house something’s felt off. More than just the grief of losing your closest family member, which had remained a constant weight on your weary shoulders. Your hometown is just like you remembered it and so different all at once. It seemed like the places you had the fondest memories had closed down, while every scabbing shame remained, making your face heat up still after all these years.
You’d also inherited her small used bookstore-slash-café and an absolute mutt of a reformed feral cat that you knew for a fact she’d picked up off the side of the road near a swamp. You’ve already decided to keep the store running, planning to juggle your wfh programmer position and return to your young adult life of being a barista. It was the cat that honestly caused you the most problems. Affogato — full name of course Gelato Affogato al Caffè, and a name that still made you roll your eyes and smile — was a sweet brown tabby that seemed incredibly stressed by the loss of his former owner
The first night you’d spent after you were officially fully moved in, he walked through the hall outside your room meowing. He hadn’t stopped until you’d followed him, down the stairs and into the laundry room. He’d inspected every corner of the room and for some reason the action unnerved you. His big green eyes turn back to you, and part of your heart aches for the old guy. It didn’t help that the old house settled loudly at night, like footsteps in the mostly empty shell
But almost an entire month and it made you feel like you were losing your mind in your own home. It felt like you weren’t getting restful sleep, brain fog clouding your short term memory. You can’t seem to remember where you put some things down. You lose your wallet for almost three days before you find it tucked under the sofa. It felt like you were going through food faster than you should have. It wasn’t helped by the new sleeping habit that you’d apparently adopted: kicking your blankets off. You’d wake up shuddering and there was Affogato crying beside you in bed
It felt like your new cat was summoning a demon
A strange new positive was that a very cute new neighbor has moved into town, and he’s become a valued regular customer and maybe even friend? Kyle is absolutely, jaw-droppingly handsome, and kind and funny and smart. Like he’s straight out of the cheese romance novels a gaggle of older women come in to trade titles for collections, browsing while they sipped from the one of a kind mugs your aunt had adored picking up while thrifting. And you don’t know why but that makes you really, really into him
Of course you agree to lunch, the safest possible date you could think of
#soooo confession I really like cozys#I am like the elderly auntie stereotypes and I discovered cozys on a whim when I worked at a thrift store and saw a funny cover#also I love the idea of Gaz being an absolute freak whose obsessed with reader ever since he saw her at her aunts funeral#he used to help your aunt around the house and maybe he didn’t confess that he had a key to your home; but he’d assured you your auntie had#her locks changed#(fuck I keep switching tenses — alright now to think of horrors for Nik & Kate 💚💚💚)#gaz x reader#cod#temp txt#tw horror#tw obsessive possessive behavior#tw stalking#I love making the 141 live in their gaslight gatekeep girlboss phases

I rarely say my takes unprompted but I genuinely can't stand modern fandom and need to scream into the void over it to thug it out.
it genuinely feels like fandom is in its gen alpha age of regression. I've noticed this heavily with other fandoms, for me I've seen it most in resident evil but now I'm seeing it in arcane too of ship wars being taken WAAAAY to seriously and just everything in general being surrounded by weird purity culture. Not to mention someone always trying to find some deep controversial reason into why you don't like a popular character or treating it like it's a direct attack. That weird portion can be left in 2020 with kinnies and IRL character shit.
What really pisses me off is that people especially on twitter, scream for fandom culture to be back, but the slightest mary sue, terrible animatic, out of character x reader, large age gap, weird fanfic, horrible but fun take, insensitive joke about a well loved character, and/or rare pair art gets crucified there. And y'all wonder why fandom is dead. Genuinely who wants to provide any material for an ungrateful bible thumping community and a hostile one at that? Or one that's so obsessed with canon.
Fandom etiquette is absolutely dead on any other website minus this one and even then I'm seeing some popular tweets that erase the fun of it here on Tumblr for some reason. Since I'm focused on arcane right now I'll be using that as an example. So what if people want to think jinx and Jayce would be friends? That doesn't mean they didn't understand the show or are less superior watchers to you. That means they don't have a stick up their ass. Who cares If someone makes a Viktor coughing joke? He does in fact cough a lot and it's placement can be funny. You are not morally ascended cause you didn't laugh at pixels fictional lung cancer. In fact you are morally shity for telling someone to kill themselves for joking about it.
Who cares if someone ships cait and Maddie over vi or vi with maddie. Or cait with ambessa or Viktor with sky or Viktor with silco. Literally the world kept spinning. Genuinely who gives a fuck it's an animated show about league not a real time war documentary 💀 Creepypasta literally turned a bunch of murders into a found family let's not forget how being delusional makes fandom more fun.
Like I said, Unfortunately since Im in an arcane place of focus this post will be using arcane examples but this does apply to every fandom.
#fandom#like genuinely if you don't like something get the fuck out. all phones and devices have a back arrow or the equivalent of#arcane#arcane jayce#arcane mel#its so funny that people are mad that jayvik fans are called fujoshis when they built thet stereotype around themselves.#sorry but hating female characters that get in the way of your yaoi is fujoshi behavior#like i thought that was obvious 😭#obviously not all jayvik shippers or whatever are like that but come on...lets be honest on behavior now.#arcane Viktor#arcane jinx#Viktor#jayce Talis#jinx#mel medarda#jayvik discussion#this isn't anti any ship so dont need to tag that#complaining#modern fandom#fandom culture#fandom etiquette

Oh, I see. You and all your little friends are just too DUMB to understand. Too low IQ. The arguments sure is convincing.
I’m not kidding they really are saying somewhere out there that Kripke couldn’t possibly understand what it means to be blue collar because to do that, you’d have to have read about the value of a linen coat (which is not directly related to any of this btw) from Marx’s Das Kapital. Kripke of course couldn’t possibly have read it, and if you haven’t read it, you can’t possibly understand anything about class. You have to have read Theory™️ to understand what it means to be *looks down my nose at people who I assume Have Not Read All The Books That I Did* blue collar *sips from tea cup with my pinky out, chortling*
#and like. all of this misses that sam and dean exist in the context of their story/universe#and that they are very clearly and repeatedly treated as low class/working class by people around them in universe (especially dean)#Anyway the original thing being said was that maybe when people make extreme assumptions about dean...#it’s tied to their perception of him as low class in the context of his universe and/or ours#Saying people who (you assume) haven't read the theories you have are Too Stupid And Uneducated to understand#what it means to experience stereotyping based on class is a self callout lending to the original point being made...#AKA you like to make assumptions about people based on classist stereotyping. you told all of us that with your whole chest.hope this helps#Add that the value of a linen coat is an example in Das Kapital known to have been written in an overcomplicated manner#(even Marx himself acknowledged this)#that's especially hard for modern readers to grasp (also limiting it's use value—see what i did there—as a metaphor for a modern show)#and that it relates to theories on the value of COMMODITIES which has little to NOTHING to do with what we're talking about in of itself#and the pretentiousness of mentioning that in particular as a show of Kripke's alleged educational deficiencies just bleeds off every pore.#pony tail guy from the "how 'bout them apples” scene in Good Will Hunting demanding regurgitation of irrelevant info type behavior#“hee hee if you asked him about the value of a linen coat he'd shrivel” *chortles again in degree i think makes me superior*#real “he doesn't know about the three seashells” energy for some complete stranger. But like if you also didn't know#what the seashells were for and walked around with poop running down your legs all of the time#Like jesus fucking christ you people are insufferable.#mail

I'm probably going to post about this on the MW subreddit, but I still find it pretty hilarious that most fans assume the "struggles" Jimbalaya was dealing with back on Earth were related to criminal acts (usually in order to demonize Curly) meanwhile most of the pieces of clues I've gathered from the HFIM dlc and the QnAs we got about the characters' lives have lead me to believe Jimbalaya's struggles were about poverty.
In the HFIM dlc we're pretty clearly playing a fish version of Jimbalaya, and the whole game is about how a capitalistic system ruins people (fish) and those that climb up help perpetuate the system and those that go down just get eaten. So it's pretty interesting to me that Jimbalaya fish even after consuming other fish and items... keeps going down.
But it was the third QnA that sealed it for me. Curly's hobbies are around a lot of friends and family that he could join interesting things. And of course play snow sports in Winter. Winter snow sports... which let's be honest is a pretty expensive hobby to have. Meanwhile, Jimbalaya can't afford any hobbies other than joining one with Curly.
I think this kinda just adds more fuel for Jimbalaya to both envy yet aspire to be like Curly.
I dunno, it's just fascinating to me watching so many fans claim the "struggles" were so obviously to do with crime when most of the current evidence I noticed seems to point towards money related issues.
-🌟 Anon
I think both are valid and valuable interpretations that’s the MW fandom makes but I think the major problem with it is the severity in which they make Jimmy out to be every factor wrong with men in society.
Like I think it’s interesting to use the idea he has some record, misdemeanors/petty stuff, that has complied to make his life more difficult. It’s all his own doing for his entitlement and general behavior but it can also be used to comment on Capitalism banking on desperation and envy. A lot of his actions are desperate because he knows his crimes on the Tulpar will make it virtually to climb any ladder, anywhere anymore due to their weight. Like in the end the problem is undeniably how the proverbial rat race creates environments that fosters Jimmy’s and creates ineffective systems like Curly represents.
Curly on the other hand benefits from the corporate part of it with his financial freedom, stability and prestige but he too is socially stagnant, deeply unhappy in the identities placed on to him and unrecognizable as anything other than a cog in the machine. I think this goes in tandem with the other members too as the identities placed onto them in the scenario all represent stages in capitalism and class discrepancies: Anya represents largely marginalized identities (particularly women in blue collar fields/harassment) and how they ultimately have to fend for themselves. Daisuke a sort of perception of both a class between Curly and the rest, protected no matter the effects of the establishment due to his home life but at the same time he is the metaphorical future gen, things stripped from him as the older generations squabble amongst themselves in private conversations leaving him unequipped. Then there’s Swansea being sort of those who have lived through it, knowing how it ends but ultimately still lack the skills, resources and want to change it, letting it cycle.
The entire thing with Jimmy circles back to the fandom ultimately wanting easy solutions to the events in the games, a face to blame and a weird black and white thinking to issues that are dangerous to view that way.
#an off tangent that is semi related is the idea of the crash happened Curly deserved some punishment I see in the fandom and while I agree#he needs to reflect and possibly build back the trust Anya lost in him the idea completely ignores the struggles he faced and the abuse he#faced and it’s like again the entire absolving the abuse of an imperfect victim as a factor in their behavior#but back to the ask the game tackles so many things and tries to not make it one note or stereotypical but conversations lead to that cuz#too many people are unwilling to admit how subjective good choices are and how environment affects places a big part in how we deal with#situations like everyone says what they will do and would but no one sits and thinks of the way it would be in the situation with the#dynamics at play and can’t see the other lenses or metaphors#mouthwashing#🌟 anon#ask#mouthwashing game#curly mouthwashing#jimmy mouthwashing#anya mouthwashing#swansea mouthwashing#daisuke mouthwashing#also if I get asks about Jimmy can you just use his name like a big part of why I think people can’t properly#engage in this game is the decentering of Jimmy as the main character and main perpetrator like he is the ultimate reason everything gets so#bad and no one wants to talk about him outside of we know he’s bad already like it’s immature and why guys can get away with it as we focus#on the men that don’t stop them and not stopping the men that do or their mentalities past a surface level amount of disdain#like say his name show his face don’t let him slip through the cracks like the game tries to show you he did#his whole mode of operation is in the dark and out of sight and it’s still perpetuating that because you refuse to show him#at least on my in box I’ll talk about him and analyze him and I would prefer if we didn’t speak about him like a forbidden word cause that’s#how the assault of victims gets looked or glossed over when you don’t say what it is or who did in all seriousness

giving psych another go after having watched the first season and a bit a couple years ago before stopping because I hadn't really been feeling it
only like six or seven eps in this time, and I am enjoying it, and I would like to stick with it this time, but god, now I do remember why I gave up on it in the first place. for all the show has going for it (which is a lot!) so much of the tone (and shawn is usually the biggest offender) falls back on those really insufferable attitudes from the mid ’00s of like. hit on every woman you see, getting laid is always the biggest priority. kneejerk disdain for anything nerdy or "uncool." I'm a guy and that means I care about porn and sports and that's it
#like yeah it's fun when shawn gets blindsided by a woman (bc she's hot ofc) only to get a reveal later that she was the bad guy#but also I'd rather he just. treated women like people in the first place lmao#and I'm sure he does later! like everything I've seen of late series him and juliet looks good and intriguing#but we're starting from such a rough place. and like. is the show aware?#bc then you've got gus who doesn't conform to those same masculine behaviors (often to set up a punchline for shawn)#but gus himself doesn't feel like a punchline or stereotype. he feels well-rounded and is often validated by the circumstances#it's just bizarre. wondering if this is one of those cases where s1 of a show feels least tonally accurate#e.g. how it's initially pitched or what it plays up for viewership or attention vs. how it settles into itself down the line#but man I'm over s1 shawn. like I'm watching the convention ep and he's being so unnecessarily dickish and dismissive to gus and everyone#because it's nerd shit? it's uncool? this just feels like such an outdated sensibility#(which it is. it's 18 years old at this point. these sensibilities are now legal adults)#but I'm glad we as a culture moved past this energy and I'm ready for the show to do the same#psych#kayla posts

Nothing will ever change my mind on the fact that the “Her anger is my anger,” line should've been about fear. Not only does it make more thematic sense for both Fugo and Sheila as characters, but I generally don't believe anger is much of a defining trait for either of them, and I'm actually sick of it in Fugo's case. He’s nowhere NEAR as angry or as IntelligentTM as ppl make him out to be, so can we PLEASE look beyond what we’re told about this character and focus on what we’re shown??
#phf#phfposting#fugoposting#pannacotta fugo#sheila e#sheila e jjba#a low effort post but it's been bothering me for ages#i stopped myself from blabbering too much about this tho lol#but yeah a lot of ppl's characterizations of fugo are WAY too influenced by Stereotypes of autistic men#even tho the traits and behaviors dont fit him at all#makes you think#also for sheila too#like of course she carries AngerTM from the past but she's not defined by it#hell she's insanely chill in phf#and her whole moment of running away had very little to do with anger#the whole Her Anger bit was so rushed smh#they deserve better

Another healing thing I like about my irl jewish community is that my masculinity hasn't ever been questioned. In a lot of ways, I totally get where people feel uncomfortable with the binary expectations of the genders are, but I live my life functionally in a binary way. It's just nice (for me) to wear kippah, to speak hebrew, and it's clear what the expectation is for who I am. In so many ways, it's nice to just take a break from feeling the need to educate people, to be almost a sounding board, and to just focus on judaism. I've gotten so used to feeling out of place that being in jewish spaces just feels nice.
Of course, this isn't to say that all jewish spaces are the same, that jews are a monolith. This is just my experience at my shul. I appreciate that they just accepted me into the fold and that I haven't had to give a seminar like I feel many people in non-jewish spaces almost require of you so that they can even consider accepting you. I know there is a lot of work that trans jews have done and are still doing, and we ought to highlight, recognize, and appreciate.
#jumblr#jewish conversion#jew by choice#personal thoughts tag#i've probably talked about this before huh#point still stands though#like even in spaces where i'm also stealth it seems like i still stick out of place because i'm obviously still queer in some way#but i love that my shul might have noticed that and i still feel welcome even so#the only thing i feel out of place about is that i'm not actually jewish yet#again though what affirms me doesn't affirm every other trans person#this is just my own experience#there's just something about my jewish space that has been completely more welcoming without explicitly saying so...#...that equivalent non-jewish spaces just haven't been effective in even attempting#which is part of the reason i'm always confused when non-jews especially assume every jew is like as unwelcoming as the worst xtian...#...or that jews are predisposed to those thoughts and behaviors like. hmmm. something is Off about that#and that's not to say that anti-trans jews don't exist. i Know they do. i'm talking about the stereotype
