Hi! I was wondering if you knew anything in particular about the Lincoln Park Zoo- I think it’s the only zoo I’ve ever been to that’s free/no admission! Especially considering the scale. The only thing that concerned me was that their polar bears seem to have a history of stereotypical behaviors (pacing, primarily) which I saw while I was there, but again, I’m a total outsider to the actual inner workings of the facility. Sorry if this is too vague, haha.
There's a couple city zoos like that with free entrance! It's a cool option, and indicative of the city providing enough funding for the facility to operate without the need for income from tickets. (Sometimes the way things are set up, I think they can be required to stay free). The St. Louis Zoo is another!
I don't know a lot about the Lincoln Park Zoo beyond what I've seen as a guest. I've gone a couple times and haven't seen anything that stood out to me as major red flags, but that's just from a public perspective and not a comprehensive assessment. They're AZA-accredited and have been for a long time, which is an indication of their general ethos and operations. I can't speak to more than that about their quality, unfortunately.
You're right about the polar bear stereotypies - that's a thing I've seen for myself. The thing is, with stereotypies - and especially with polar bears - they're not necessarily an indicator of current welfare or quality of life.
For folk who are new to the blog or unfamiliar with the concept, in animal care, a stereotypy is a "repetitive, invariant behavior pattern with no obvious goal or function." Examples often seen are repetitive pacing, head-bobbing, licking or chewing, and rocking or swaying. (It's important to note that not all repetitive behaviors are stereotypic behaviors - e.g. animals may pace when excited and anticipating the arrival of a keeper). Stereotypies can be an indicator of chronically poor welfare, under-stimulating enrichment, or inappropriate captive environments, but the important thing to know about that is that they often persist after the problem that caused them is resolved. So you can take a polar bear or an elephant that picked up a stereotypic behavior in one zoo and move them to another, much better situation, and they may still continue the stereotypy.
(The fact that stereotypies can be indicators of previous, but not current, welfare problems is a really important nuance that is often left out of discussions. Sometimes they're called "zoochosis", which anti-captivity folk define as "the psychosis induced by captivity"... but that's a very unscientific approach, and doesn't facilitate productive discussion or attempts to identify causes and alleviate the behavior. Zoochosis is nothing but a useless manipulative buzzword, folks.)
Bears in general seem to be prone to stereotypies in captive situations. I've seen some recent research that hypothesizes it's likely due to a lack of ability to engage in normal behavioral sequences, such as foraging. Polar bears seem especially prone to it. One 2013 study found that of the 55 polar bears in North America they assessed, 85% engaged in stereotypical pacing. It might be because they natural cover such a huge range in the wild that older, smaller exhibits haven't allowed them to move as much as they need to; it could also be due to a historical lack of appropriate enrichment. We don't really know, because there's so many potential factors, and the long lifespan of polar bears means longitudinal studies of multiple generations take a very long time.
These are both things the industry is working on fixing: newer polar bear exhibits are built to be much larger and more complex, and there's been a heavy focus in the literature for at least a decade on finding ways to reduce stereotypies by providing engaging enrichment and increasing bears' activity levels. Lincoln Park Zoo's polar bear habitat was renovated in 2016, and - while it looks rather boring to me, as a guest - it was apparently designed to allow for a lot of activity range and polar bear-specific needs.
Their current bears are both about 20 years old, and were transferred to the Lincoln Park Zoo after the new habitat was completed. It's entirely plausible the bears arrived with stereotypies from their previous facilities, given that the emphasis on improving polar bear care is younger than they are. Here's a photo I took there a couple years ago, of Talini (I think), engaging in a repetitive head tossing behavior. It's definitely hard to watch, as a guest, and I don't remember if they had signage up about it.
That all being said, I wouldn't judge the whole zoo based on the polar bear stereotypies, because there's so much at play there in terms of history and the evolution of care for the species. What's important is how they're handling it, and what they're doing to help encourage more normative behavior from the bears. Given the amount of research and effort the zoo field has put into addressing the topic in polar bears for the last decade, it's highly probable that a lot of staff time goes into helping reduce the amount of time those bears spend engaging in stereotypies.

being nonhuman kinda feels like zoochosis in a way,,, like an animal raised in captivity in a non suitable enviroment who would never survive in the wild pacing around in circles for hours on end because they know it just isnt right
#wholewolf-rants#for those who dont know heres a definition of zoochosis#form of psychosis that develops in animals held captive in zoos#Most often it manifests in what are called stereotypic behaviors#which are often monotonous obsessive repetitive actions that serve no purpose.#alterhuman#nonhuman#otherkin#kinmunity#therianthropy#therian community

I rarely say my takes unprompted but I genuinely can't stand modern fandom and need to scream into the void over it to thug it out.
it genuinely feels like fandom is in its gen alpha age of regression. I've noticed this heavily with other fandoms, for me I've seen it most in resident evil but now I'm seeing it in arcane too of ship wars being taken WAAAAY to seriously and just everything in general being surrounded by weird purity culture. Not to mention someone always trying to find some deep controversial reason into why you don't like a popular character or treating it like it's a direct attack. That weird portion can be left in 2020 with kinnies and IRL character shit.
What really pisses me off is that people especially on twitter, scream for fandom culture to be back, but the slightest mary sue, terrible animatic, out of character x reader, large age gap, weird fanfic, horrible but fun take, insensitive joke about a well loved character, and/or rare pair art gets crucified there. And y'all wonder why fandom is dead. Genuinely who wants to provide any material for an ungrateful bible thumping community and a hostile one at that? Or one that's so obsessed with canon.
Fandom etiquette is absolutely dead on any other website minus this one and even then I'm seeing some popular tweets that erase the fun of it here on Tumblr for some reason. Since I'm focused on arcane right now I'll be using that as an example. So what if people want to think jinx and Jayce would be friends? That doesn't mean they didn't understand the show or are less superior watchers to you. That means they don't have a stick up their ass. Who cares If someone makes a Viktor coughing joke? He does in fact cough a lot and it's placement can be funny. You are not morally ascended cause you didn't laugh at pixels fictional lung cancer. In fact you are morally shity for telling someone to kill themselves for joking about it.
Who cares if someone ships cait and Maddie over vi or vi with maddie. Or cait with ambessa or Viktor with sky or Viktor with silco. Literally the world kept spinning. Genuinely who gives a fuck it's an animated show about league not a real time war documentary 💀 Creepypasta literally turned a bunch of murders into a found family let's not forget how being delusional makes fandom more fun.
Like I said, Unfortunately since Im in an arcane place of focus this post will be using arcane examples but this does apply to every fandom.
#fandom#like genuinely if you don't like something get the fuck out. all phones and devices have a back arrow or the equivalent of#arcane#arcane jayce#arcane mel#its so funny that people are mad that jayvik fans are called fujoshis when they built thet stereotype around themselves.#sorry but hating female characters that get in the way of your yaoi is fujoshi behavior#like i thought that was obvious 😭#obviously not all jayvik shippers or whatever are like that but come on...lets be honest on behavior now.#arcane Viktor#arcane jinx#Viktor#jayce Talis#jinx#mel medarda#jayvik discussion#this isn't anti any ship so dont need to tag that#complaining#modern fandom#fandom culture#fandom etiquette

giving psych another go after having watched the first season and a bit a couple years ago before stopping because I hadn't really been feeling it
only like six or seven eps in this time, and I am enjoying it, and I would like to stick with it this time, but god, now I do remember why I gave up on it in the first place. for all the show has going for it (which is a lot!) so much of the tone (and shawn is usually the biggest offender) falls back on those really insufferable attitudes from the mid ’00s of like. hit on every woman you see, getting laid is always the biggest priority. kneejerk disdain for anything nerdy or "uncool." I'm a guy and that means I care about porn and sports and that's it
#like yeah it's fun when shawn gets blindsided by a woman (bc she's hot ofc) only to get a reveal later that she was the bad guy#but also I'd rather he just. treated women like people in the first place lmao#and I'm sure he does later! like everything I've seen of late series him and juliet looks good and intriguing#but we're starting from such a rough place. and like. is the show aware?#bc then you've got gus who doesn't conform to those same masculine behaviors (often to set up a punchline for shawn)#but gus himself doesn't feel like a punchline or stereotype. he feels well-rounded and is often validated by the circumstances#it's just bizarre. wondering if this is one of those cases where s1 of a show feels least tonally accurate#e.g. how it's initially pitched or what it plays up for viewership or attention vs. how it settles into itself down the line#but man I'm over s1 shawn. like I'm watching the convention ep and he's being so unnecessarily dickish and dismissive to gus and everyone#because it's nerd shit? it's uncool? this just feels like such an outdated sensibility#(which it is. it's 18 years old at this point. these sensibilities are now legal adults)#but I'm glad we as a culture moved past this energy and I'm ready for the show to do the same#psych#kayla posts

Nothing will ever change my mind on the fact that the “Her anger is my anger,” line should've been about fear. Not only does it make more thematic sense for both Fugo and Sheila as characters, but I generally don't believe anger is much of a defining trait for either of them, and I'm actually sick of it in Fugo's case. He’s nowhere NEAR as angry or as IntelligentTM as ppl make him out to be, so can we PLEASE look beyond what we’re told about this character and focus on what we’re shown??
#phf#phfposting#fugoposting#pannacotta fugo#sheila e#sheila e jjba#a low effort post but it's been bothering me for ages#i stopped myself from blabbering too much about this tho lol#but yeah a lot of ppl's characterizations of fugo are WAY too influenced by Stereotypes of autistic men#even tho the traits and behaviors dont fit him at all#makes you think#also for sheila too#like of course she carries AngerTM from the past but she's not defined by it#hell she's insanely chill in phf#and her whole moment of running away had very little to do with anger#the whole Her Anger bit was so rushed smh#they deserve better

Another healing thing I like about my irl jewish community is that my masculinity hasn't ever been questioned. In a lot of ways, I totally get where people feel uncomfortable with the binary expectations of the genders are, but I live my life functionally in a binary way. It's just nice (for me) to wear kippah, to speak hebrew, and it's clear what the expectation is for who I am. In so many ways, it's nice to just take a break from feeling the need to educate people, to be almost a sounding board, and to just focus on judaism. I've gotten so used to feeling out of place that being in jewish spaces just feels nice.
Of course, this isn't to say that all jewish spaces are the same, that jews are a monolith. This is just my experience at my shul. I appreciate that they just accepted me into the fold and that I haven't had to give a seminar like I feel many people in non-jewish spaces almost require of you so that they can even consider accepting you. I know there is a lot of work that trans jews have done and are still doing, and we ought to highlight, recognize, and appreciate.
#jumblr#jewish conversion#jew by choice#personal thoughts tag#i've probably talked about this before huh#point still stands though#like even in spaces where i'm also stealth it seems like i still stick out of place because i'm obviously still queer in some way#but i love that my shul might have noticed that and i still feel welcome even so#the only thing i feel out of place about is that i'm not actually jewish yet#again though what affirms me doesn't affirm every other trans person#this is just my own experience#there's just something about my jewish space that has been completely more welcoming without explicitly saying so...#...that equivalent non-jewish spaces just haven't been effective in even attempting#which is part of the reason i'm always confused when non-jews especially assume every jew is like as unwelcoming as the worst xtian...#...or that jews are predisposed to those thoughts and behaviors like. hmmm. something is Off about that#and that's not to say that anti-trans jews don't exist. i Know they do. i'm talking about the stereotype

i think people get really fucking loose with anti semitism to the point where they don't even know what they're saying and i am out of patience people need to shut the fuck up
#jokes about hitler#saying i'm 'making it about being jewish' and dismissing my negative feelings towards christmas#saying i 'hate fun' when i'm saying i feel fucking lonely#using the israeli government's disgusting behavior as an excuse to be hateful towards jewish people#the disgusting comments that politicians make to the point that it's normalized#people fully believing stereotypes about jews#hearing my peers say people 'look jewish' and dismissing me when i explain to them that they are wrong#subtle antisemitism EVERYWHERE#it was more obvious during the fucking holocaust but people still fucking hate us#the fact that nazis still exist and people don't give a shit#if you compare trump and hitler you will notice so many similarities#people do not realize that antisemitism is EVERYWHERE.#and this country has elected a huge anti semite#i do not give a fuck if this pisses people off i am so done.

hate when i see a youtube video that's like 'analyzing why [thing] is bad!' and you watch the video and they just say nothing for twenty minutes
#random thoughts#watched a video on why a specific character was poor representation for survivors of assault#and it was such a nothing burger of a video#'this character is bad because children might see them and think their behavior is okay' okay?#i learned how to block out memories from finn adventure time but that doesn't mean memory suppression shouldn't be addressed in media#plus hazbin hotel. i'm talking about angel dust btw if that wasn't blaringly obvious. is an adult cartoon. for adults#adult cartoons shouldn't have to restrict their subject matter because kids could see it#and angel dust being a male queer SA victim using hypersexuality as a coping mechanism could be good!#and the fact he hits on other people despite it making them uncomfortable isn't exactly a problem a la his character?#it could be a control thing. i used to do something similar (pushing other people's boundaries and complaining when they pushed back)#because it made me feel some kind of control over my life#it could start off as a really shitty joke and then grow into 'oh god is that why he does that??'#but anyway their second main point was that the songs were bad? and that poison being an upbeat song makes it bad#like despite listing many other songs which are upbeat with heavy lyrics. but somehow poison is the exception because it's a cartoon?#like again that could be a character thing. angel dust using obfuscation as a coping mechanism to distract himself from his shitty life.#。・゚゚・the lyrics are upbeat to distract you from how dead i feel inside・゚゚・。#and their reading of the second song seemed really mean-spirited?#like as 'everyone has problems so you're not special because you're a whiny baby' rather than 'you're not as alone as you think you are'#and like if op wanted to just complain about a show they watched then yeah go off i do that all the time#but don't parade it as character analysis???#and they say 'oh reading it as a feelgood you're not alone message doesn't work because these characters' struggles are not equal'#but like. sometimes rape needs to feel like it's not some special trauma. it's not unique and you're not uniquely fucked up for it#two characters' traumas don't need to be directly comparable for them to bond!!!#and im not like. defending hazbin hotel btw. never seen it not going to see it no thanks#i'm just complaining about a mediocre youtube video that i'm going to forget about in a week#god i hate that brand of youtube video. where they just complain about things without going into depth about why they're bad#especially if their complaints are shallow and don't have to do with like. the actual structure of a character or story#like it's so easy to say 'this character is bad because theyre a predatory stereotype' but like. go into some depth at least#i think i hate these videos so much because they're fueled purely by hate. no love for the source material or even a desire to learn#or a love for storytelling even

"How do you know the new clock is being built in Ankh-Morpork?" said Lobsang trailing behind Lu-Tze as he took a mossy, sunken path that led through rhododendron thickets to the monastery wall.
"I know. I'll tell you, the day someone pulls the plug out of the bottom of the universe, the chain will lead all the way to Ankh-Morpork and some bugger saying, 'I just wanted to see what would happen.' All roads lead to Ankh-Morpork."
"I thought all roads led away from Ankh-Morpork."
"Not the way we're going."

some LOTR fans apparently: i can't believe Eowyn gave up being a badass warrior to become Faramir's wife and a lame healer, ugh Tolkien being sexist in spite of himself
me: the. war. was. OVER!!!! ????
#like what?????#eowyn#the lord of the rings#something about how tolkien's whole point is about how glorifying war is wrong#the sword is a tool that we should want to put away as soon as we can#stop glorifying war!!#also the idea that a Strong Female Character only remains as such as long as she is exhibiting stereotypically MALE behavior#ew
