81. we're in the middle of a storm and you want to stop and feel the rain?

Slaves of Socorro, just after Nightwolf goes down:

Stefan's always been...aware of Tursgud. As an enemy, as a threat, then later as a guilt, a magnetism, a fire that whispers touch me, it'll hurt. It's nothing to how he feels for Jesper, but Stefan and Tursgud have been whirling in each other's orbits for a long time, and that kind of fascination doesn't die easily.

But Tursgud does, as it turns out.

Stefan watches Nightwolf go down with a sort of detached horror. Part of him wants to dive overboard, try to swim for survivors (there will be none). Another part, a much larger part, thinks callously, Good.

But he still can't move from the rail.

The Heron lurches wildly under his feet, and there's a thud beside him as Jesper loses his footing and stumbles against the bulwark, setting the shields rattling. It takes Stefan a long moment to look up.

"Stef, the sails," says Jesper, voice fast and tight, and Stefan blinks at him for a long moment as the ship lurches again, spray from the boulder that just missed them stinging his face. The port sail is up but fluttering against the mast, and Jesper can't raise the starboard yardarm on his own.

"He's just—" he manages, but that's as far as he gets before Jesper catches his shoulder and shakes it.

"Not now, Stef," he says. "This is the storm. Get through this and feel the rain later."

A stray arrow fired from the bank whips past Jesper's shoulder, and Stefan's brain kicks back into gear. He fights past the urge to shove Jesper to the deck and stand over him and defend him because he's not losing anyone else today—

(What does it mean, that Tursgud's death makes him feel like this?)

Instead, he nods once, grateful, and dives for the starboard lines.

Day 10: Elaborate! In which I elaborate on my favorite Brotherband moments.

When the gang pretend Ingvar is a bear, Stefan is Tursgud, and generally wreak havoc on the Sharks. Good times.

Thorn and Lydia's scouting mission is one of the reasons the Hunters is my favorite BB book. They have a great dynamic!

Edvin knitting the caps. I love him so much.

Any time the Herons break out the instruments and start on "The Herons, the Herons, the mighty fightn' Herons" is a good time. The terrible rhymes, Hal hating it and Erak loving it....wonderful.

The Heron flee from Hallasholm, pursued by a vengeful Erak is one of the funniest scenes in fiction, change my mind. You can't.

Gilan interacting with the Herons gives me immensely happy feelings. And his mission with Lydia? Deceased.

On that note, Gilan's fight with the Shurmel gets me excited every time!

Thorn stopping the crossbow bolt? Badass.

Thorn threatening the Ghostface by saying he'd nibble on his fingers and toes...why is this amazing? I love it.

This list grows Thorn heavy, but you know the scene where the ship is riding the wave from the Caldera, and everyone is terrified? Thorn is so excited, like he's in a Wisconsin Dells ride. Glorious.

Stig calling out Olaf on his bullshit gives me immense satisfaction. Then him finding healing and family with the Herons? Immaculate.

Ulf and Wulf tying at rock-paper-scissors every time, to the horror of the judges will live on in my memory as the second funniest scene John Flannagan wrote.

Jesper saving the kids from the bear after spending the book as a useless loser is such a good moment. You go Jesper!

Kloof. That's it, that's the bullet point.

Why do I ship Stefan and Tursgud a bit?

Questions:

1. Are you doing okay?

2.Can we come up with an AU where this would work?

Hi! I'm doing good- this year has been very busy for me so I haven't had much time at all to write.

I think Stefan and Tursgurd would work best if they maybe had like a casual thing going before the brotherband competition and then Tursgurd was both so upset that Stefan won but also really upset that he's been exiled (emotions are hard!) This would lead to the Sharks also leaving Hallasholm to find the Andomal with the Herons but like the Sharks arrive like a day or two later to every place and kinda watch incredulously . Over the course of the journey, Tursgurd and Stefan reconcile and talk things through. Tursgurd learns that he doesn't have to be the best and learns humility and Stefan has someone who is ride or die.

what I'm annoyed about Flannagan's writing:

-why do almost all main villains have black hair? (Tursgud is the only main villain who's a blondie)

-Why doesn't Stefan mimic women or the twins? both would be useful.

-no offence to Wulf, but he needs to get injured instead of Ulf.

-can there be some major double agenting in the books? please? IDC whether it's RA or BB

Morgarath has white-blond hair, actually! And I would love to see some double-agenting. I think I'd lose my mind though if Flanagan ever proved to be that big brained

And I pretty sure Stefan mimicked the twins once? Just as a joke though. It had no major use. And maybe he can't do female voices

Au Idea

What if BB and/or RA crew met their opposite personalities? Could so maybe write a fan fic about that? 

opposite BB:

- opposite Stig: likes to provoke people’s temper, not motivated, smart and a strategist, calm

-opposite Hal: aggressive ,reckless ,violent, has anger issues, bossy, arrogant

- opposite Stefan: shy, bookish, modest, secretly good at mimicry, intelligent

- opposite Jesper: sweet, philosophical, obedient, loyal, will hurt you if you hurt his friends

- opposite Ulf and Wulf: never swap places, never fight, lazy, a bit snobby because they know they never fight, would sacrifice and let harm come to each other

-opposite Edvin:has Stefan's personality, good at making calculations

- opposite Ingvar:has Jesper's personality, is the only one who knows Edvin loves to knit and cook

Other Stuff:These Herons don’t like each other at all, with the exception of opposite Jesper and Stefan. This Hal is very much like Tursgud and so nobody really likes him. 

I haven't decided opposite RA yet...

a couple of thoughts i've been having too many feelings about lately

now and then and mikkel and thorn (now and then i miss you? ahsdadhfsldashfjl)

knut 'he (stefan) broke your (tursgud's) heart! do i need to break his face?'

stig's 'i love you' and hal's gentle 'i know'

in contrast, the first 'i love you' directed at jesper sending him straight into panic

ansgar telling stefan that if he breaks jesper's heart, there will be consequences

erak listening to three people regarding his health - axel (wolfwind healer), svengal (sometimes) and edvin (he's got axel's clearance plus he's scary)

edvin, jesper, stef, ingvar, wulf and ulf showing up at rollond's doorstep, him opening the door and closing them immediately with a no (rollond, listen, there's quite a big chance hal will be chosen for the new oberjarl election, and we all know hallasholm will burn into the ground, if it happens)

wolves and herons friendship

stefan singing mikkel's songs

herons lying around their campfire, edvin starting picking his hands and jesper showing his leg into them not looking up from where he's opening his locks

karina leaving everything behind in araluen

hal and karina speaking araluen at home

edvin teaching ingvar how to read after hal makes him his spectacles

the reunions after the events of the ghostfaces (thorn showing up at karina's door without hal (he's walking stig home) and she being terrified for a moment her son didn't make it)

girls gathering around stefan after herons' every return because he always got the tea (jesper leaning into his side, quietly listening)

edvin dropping a heavy book in front of the training instructors ('what's that?' 'healer manual so the poor kids have somewhere to start')

inevitably, hal hanging thorn's shield on the wall next to mikkel's in the dead hall
