I absolutely love the fact that Ed chose to paint himself as the bride. It was not only because the 'male' cake topper happened to resemble Stede. He truly envisioned himself that way. If he wanted, he could have easily altered the cake topper in order to resemble a man. But he didn't. Apart from changing the bride's skin colour, he chose to alter the dress and paint it in a very specific way. He truly imagines himself as a potential bride in his and Stede's imaginary future wedding.

And I fucking love it. You have no idea how much this means to me. As a person who was assigned female at birth, I'm starting to question my gender identity and realising that I have in fact a very complicated relationship with my gender. And then I saw Blackbeard, someone who in the eyes of pretty much all the men around him (in particular Izzy, Pete and even Stede) is the archetype of the ideal masculine man, imagining himself as a beautiful bride wearing a fucking beautiful dress. It feels so fucking cathartic, so freeing.

Our Flag Means Death does a beautiful job at depicting various types and expressions of gender identity. Even the characters that aren't trans are allowed to explore and express their gender with so many beautiful ways, without being judged for not conforming to the expected gender roles (with the exception of Stede, who was bullied both as a child and as an adult and Izzy's mean comments to Ed after the break up, but I think you get my point).

But back to Ed. Ed is the 'typical' masculine man, behaving the way it was expected of him. But throughout the show, and with Stede's help, he is allowed to step out of his 'usual self' and be who he wants to be. He gets to be someone who wears frilly shirts and silk pants and does silly little bows. He gets to be the man who dresses fancy from head to toe and weaves little purple bows in his beard. For a while, he gets to be just Ed, having fun and expressing himself.

And then, in a moment of depression and yearning, he actively imagines himself as a bride. Even in his darkest, most desperate moments, his 'true' self shines through. And I think that's beautiful.

On a final note, I love the fact that Ed being the bride and Stede the groom doesn't refer to the classic ‘who's the man and who's the woman in the relationship’. It's just two men, who choose to express their gender identities in many beautiful ways, and I think that's beautiful, and exactly what a lot of us needed.

This goes to all my fellow trans, queer and questioning friends, for whom this show is also a source of warmth and much needed comfort.

i do love like. rhys darby's apparent self-confidence arc where in online skits, tv shows, and comedy sets he would portray himself as sexy, but in a way that was clearly meant to be ironic. like "yeah, the joke here is that i'm not very sexy. it's funny for the audience if i pretend that my accent is causing people to express sexual interest in me. if i shake my ass a little. if i pretend to be a playboy in an episode of this TV show. because it's so far removed from reality."

and then a bunch of gay millenials and gen z-ers saw him in our flag. where, again, the shirtlessness occurs in moments where stede is supposed to be pathetic (getting his shirt cut up during a fight, lying in bed greviously injured because of his own hubris.)

but fans saw him and they ran with it. they were like "wow, this man is genuinely very attractive. and i'm going to draw art and write stories about it." a fic author wrote the "your fuckin' tits, mate!" heard around the world. a lot of trans men, in particular, began to relate to the character, and find comfort in the body positivity.

and like... rhys darby noticed. this middle aged man started going on instagram and posting thirst traps. at a comedy show my friend attended (which sadly no footage exists, no one in attendence decided to bootleg it), the man literally grabbed his own chest and shook it up and down in a pantomime of titfucking as part of a bit he was doing.

and in season 2, stede's necklines are PLUNGING. we see him shirtless both before and after he has sex with ed. and none of these things - the lower necklines, the shirtlessness, are framed as being jokes, or as things that happen at the expense of the character. stede makes these decisions. stede is showing off his own body.

and honestly? good for him. and good for rhys darby. everyone deserves to feel that sort of self confidence.

Ed’s hands grip tightly onto Stede’s shirt on either side of his collar, almost trying to hold him up like he knows Stede would fall over himself if given the chance. He might have been offended at the prospect some other time when he believed in himself and his ability to not swoon.

  "Now, let's say we take you to bed and get you pregnant."

  "Huh?" Stede said, fluttering his eyes like that would make things make more sense, barely processing Ed's words while being dragged into his quarters, "Okay" He felt it necessary to add that part on because he'd heard consent was cool or something. Lucius expounded about it often and he was usually right about stuff like this. Whatever Roach gave him must have caused him to move into some dream world. This simply can't be the real world, the real world Stede is most likely getting cooked alive or being given brutal head injuries That would explain why he feels so warm and how his everything is so fuzzy. "l'm so high." He mumbled to himself unable to take in anything around him other than Ed manhandling him into the cabin.

i got back to school, so i couldn't really finish anything i wanted for @trans-mages week 🥲 figured i might just as well post some snippets here so they dont go ignored until the hypothetical moment i finish them

before that, though; my first Our Flag Means Death piece, being birthed

im really proud at how Blackbeard is coming to be, though i may be physically unable to draw a decent Stede (hence sketch phase)

first off, a small something from the Mordelia-centric fic i started working on back during sapphic week (and tbh, might as well re-do what i have in it for the pick n mix instead of transmagesweek if i dont have the time)

The dress looked fucking ridiculous on her.

She wanted a cool suit, like Baz’s; or at least some fancy trousers paired with one of those extravagant shirts they wore to things like this.

If Aaliyah were there, she’d know exactly what to do to make the dress look better – or just feel better.

But she wasn't there, was she?

She never showed up on their spot. Maybe she wouldn't even come at all.

So Mordelia was stuck with the ridiculous-looking dress. Like a girlfriendless loser.

and so this isn't too long, just a little something else from another transmages fic.

it is fckn COLD! omg, im not letting the dogs stay outside for very long then. I should have double layered before going outside, the wind isn't helping at all. I'm going to be making a pot of coffee then making mum her lunch, poor mother forgot her card yesterday when she went into town to grocery shop. first time she did that in a long while.

2:02pm - I'm starting to feel hungry, so I'll have my first meal for today, idk what ill be having, but I'll be in the kitchen anyway lol I started watching our flag means death yesterday, I fckn LOVE it! I am on episode five and so far my favorite character is stede ♡ he's a goof ball.

5:47pm - HOLY FCK IS IT EVER COLD TONIGHT!! My little brother and I just got back from the store to pick something up for dinner tonight, and a few snacks ^-^ im just gonna warm up first before I start cooking. it is -17 with Northwind chill. I was wearing my scarf, toque, plaid shirt and my jacket. my face was so cold lmao made the wrong choice to wear jeans.

7:51pm - heating up some store bought pizza for the family tonight, got snacks and a movie to watch. this will be fun ^-^ I am currently taking a break from watching ofmd and good omens for a bit and just read on ao3. or maybe just watch YouTube videos, I don't know which I want to do first. took the dogs out an hour ago and BOI is it ever fckn cold out. I didn't let the dogs stay outside for very long, there are still some ice on the road too.

9:03pm - i might actually go to bed a bit early tonight, I am starting to yawn a lot and my eyes are starting to feel heavy. also, I don't know if this is too much information but! this is day 2 of wearing my Trans tape and I fckn feel great! except for the itchy part, but that only gets annoying when I am not fully distracted by anything.

Jim on drums, Frenchie on guitar, Ed singing his lungs out with his fist gripped tight around the microphone, leather gloves and earrings and eyeliner and his fingernails polished black and a tattoo of a tentacle winding its way up his arm. But it was different tonight, it was different in Jackie’s Bar. Ed felt the shift in the energy, he opened his eyes and flitted his gaze across the crowd. He could barely see with the lights shining so harsh in his eyes, but he tried to make out faces. He spotted Izzy Hands in the front, his arms folded over his chest and that star-shaped tattoo on his cheek. His time in prison marked so clearly upon him, he wore it like a badge. But he wasn’t the person Ed was looking for, the sight of him rang in Ed’s chest like a miserable normal. Where…? Another face snagged hopelessly at Ed’s attention, Frenchie’s platonic life partner John. John with his sketchbook, John designing costumes for a mythical stage show of epic proportions. Ed’s gaze found a pair of unfamiliar eyes, he locked with them for a moment and his voice slipped. There was a man sitting at a table near the stage, immaculate angelic curls of hair and a soft cherubic face. A grin spread over Ed’s face, they threw a saucy wink in the man’s direction. They grasped at the shirt, the shirt that was beginning to cling to them as sweat poured in the heat of the lights. He tugged the shirt over his head, revealing the purple bralette he had on under it. He tossed the shirt into the crowd, he saw hands raise to grasp for it automatically. The man with the golden hair took it, he grabbed Ed’s shirt out of the air and held it to his chest.

Excerpt:

“Now, if you’re really not interested, I can leave you to it and just disappear to your bathroom. Or,” his fingers find a nipple under Stede’s shirt, which grants him a rewarding little gasp, “I could stay here and let you watch?”

Stede’s face is all flushed, his breathing is getting heavier, and he seems to have a hard time meeting Izzy’s eyes. Even if he’s completely misread the situation and Stede tells him to leave, getting this reaction out of him alone would have been worth it. Eventually, Stede finds his words again.

“Or maybe- I mean, I wouldn’t want to impose, but could I possibly interest you – “
