Little did they know...
youtube
Browar! Jabol! Wino! Z siarą! Łyskacz! Wóda! Wszystko to wychleję! Wkrótce Valhalla, a dzisiaj - val vina! Browar! Jabol! Wino! Z siarą! Łyskacz! Wóda! Wszystko to wychleję! Matko Naturo, My będziemy ciebie czcić, W lesie po nocy, Będziem tanie wino pić, (Ooo, japa-tapa-tam!) Nie będziemy klękać przed fałszywym bogiem, (Japa-tapa-tam!) Bo mamy swojego Srygława z Twarogiem! Browar! Jabol! Wino! Z siarą! Łyskacz! Wóda! Wszystko to wychleję! Matko Naturo, Jak się nawalę trochę Tobie na chwałę Wszystkim pokażę psiochę, (Ooo, japa-tapa-tam!) Z okowów majtek jestem wyzwolona, (Japa-tapa-tam!) W świetle księżyca leżę rozkraczona! Browar! Jabol! Wino! Z siarą! Łyskacz! Wóda! Wszystko to wychleję!

well poland has chosen and i can say i was pretty surprised, i was convinced it was justyna or nothing really. personally i’m not a huge fan of “the tower”, i think it’s a little bit too generic for my taste. the composition is very static and it lack a punch of sorts. maybe it should get a little revamp like “luktelk”. i still think that objectively it’s a safe option and in the semi where all the polish diaspora counters vote it may qualify. especially if they put effor into the staging, it could make or brake the song
over all i’m a little bit disappointed knowing that we had so many interesting and fresh songs submitted to tvp (and in polish!!! please i want to hear my language, not english!!!). but i wish the best of luck to luna, im happy we don’t have to be ashamed of our representative
#definitely check out jesień tańcuj and karma from other submissions#those were my favourites alongside justyna steczkowska#eurovision 2024

1995 Dublin - Number 5 - Justyna - "Sama"
youtube
In contrast with the previous entry, here is a career about to launch. Justyna Steczkowska was on a familiar path for more modern Eurovision contestants. She won the premier season of the Polish musical talent show Szansa na Sukces, the same competition that Alicja Szemplińska won before becoming Poland's entry for the cancelled 2020 Eurovision final.
After that win in 1993, TVP picked Justyna as their representative for 1995 after Poland's highly successful Eurovision debut in 1994. Sama reached number two in the Polish national chart and is a showcase for Justyna's vocal abilities. Here singing conventionally, using white voice as well as some astonishing operatic notes, trills and techniques to conclude.
Her voice isn't the only remarkable things about the song. Lyrically its darkly melancholy. She pictures herself as a flea that the world doesn't care about, standing ignored at the bottom of the staircase to a tower block in an uncaring town. Whether her cry of anguish at the end of the song is about loneliness or the fact she's going to have to climb the stairs is not revealed.
It's a changing and challenging song that showcases Polish tradition and culture. I'm not sure white voice had been used at Eurovision up to this point, especially as the countries where it is part of folkloric singing hadn't been in Eurovision for very long at all.
Of course it only managed to finish 18th. Being first on stage can't have helped. I can imagine it took the audience by surprise as I expect they were more ready for safer ballad or something poppy instead of a melodrama about insignificance. I can imagine that odious word 'shrill' being bandied around off-mic in commentary boxes.
It's a tremendously brave move, and Justyna sings it incredibly well. Even though the song didn't perform well, Poland loved her. She went on to have two Polish number ones as well as numerous other singles and albums. She's a star in Poland and is a familiar face on TV. Her most recent releases came out last year, including D.N.A. below.

21.10.2024
Happy Monday everyone!
It's been quite a rough start of the week for me. All trains on my usual line were blocked so I had to take a different route and it took me absolutely ages to get in, which was very infuriating. I admittedly got a little too irritated, but I'm really not a big fan of disruptions to my routine...
Anyways, I'm salvaging this foul mood by having an adequately productive day. I'm now doing a summary of all the clinical trials relevant to my research project so that I can quote them properly in my upgrade report and later memorise them. I started working on it yesterday and, although I have a lot to get through, I'm trying to make as much of a dent in it as possible this week so I can start writing up my report soon. I'm pretty happy with the progress so far, I just wish I wasn't such a slow reader.
The weekend completely flew by, so it feels like I haven't properly rested either. I played D&D all day with my friends yesterday. It had been a while so it felt good to get back into the campaign. I think I'm going to start attending one-shot sessions again soon because otherwise I play too little and I miss it. Then when I got home my boyfriend made me this delicious orzo with pumpkin and asparagus. I feel so lucky to have him in my life.
This week is pretty packed socially too! Final concert of the month tonight, dinner with friends from my previous job on Thursday, meeting a friend for coffee on Saturday and then going to a museum with my boyfriend and seeing my best friend for dinner on Sunday. It doesn't seem like a lot, but on top of all the work I have to do it's definitely going to be another exhausting week. At least I've managed to make a GP appointment to get my headaches checked out.
I'm so lucky to live such a busy and fulfilling life! I hope I can make the best of the time I have.
Be kind to yourselves and take care everyone! It's starting to get cold so make sure you wrap up well.

UPDATE: Wielki Finał Polskich Kwalifikacji
Kicking off our weekend (and then some) of National Final Updates (which now include Finland on Monday and Ukraine on Tuesday), we introduce Poland!
Poland has been hot and cold with National Finals after a voting fiasco in 2023 and an internal selection that seemingly played out like a national final. This year, they hope to get it right.
Of the 10 songs that are competing, I could only rank 8 as "Let It Burn" by Daria Marx and "In Cosmic Mist" by Janusz Radek are not released yet. If they do before the National Final, I will be able to update you.
To begin, no. Jojo Siwa is NOT one of the participants. However, we have Poland's representative from 1995, Justyna Steczkowska, attempting to return as she did last year. Sara James from Junior Eurovision 2021 was set to compete, however, she chose to withdraw, so she won't represent Poland this year.
My favorite right now is "Lusterka" by Sw@ da x Niczos (I am stylizing with a space as to not accidentally tag anyone!).
The Poland National Final will take place on February 14.

5)Poland-Luna-Tower.
Very weak perfomance. Luna tried to sing properly, but it failed. If Poland counld send Justyna Steczkowska instead Luna, i m sure, Poland could be in final. The song have no catching tunes, so i give 4 points from 12.
The perfomance from first semifinal.

Art, Dance and Eurovision redemption - Women of Central/Eastern Europe
At it again, this time in Central/Eastern Europe! Real Europe? You get the point :)
In which I've spent most of this week caught in the rabbithole that is Romanian music (seriously, the amount I had to cut to make room for everything else is brutal) and I've ended up quite fond of 1997 albums, by the looks of it. Unintentionally!
As usual, the list is not in any way ranked - this is just the order it happened to end up in. My top picks from each album have been gathered in a playlist here (ca. an hour and 20 minutes), if you want more (which, why wouldn't you?), here's an extended version with additional tracks from albums and artists not mentioned on the list (just under three hours), and finally there's a playlist of the full albums.
Justyna Steczkowska - Naga (1997) Spotify Youtube - Kicking off the list with some jazzy polish art pop! The track's on this are so incredibly layered (just take Kryminalna miłość for an example) and Steczkowska is such a skilled vocalist.
Jana Vébrová - Kykyrý (2007) Spotify Youtube - I mean, Vébrová's just cool, right? An accordion heavy folk-ish record, but with plenty of edge. Like I said, it's just really cool.
Ruslana - Дикі танці (2003) Spotify Youtube - Ruslana is so obviously an icon that I had a hard time not including her here, and I don't think there's much to argue against this being her best record. Aptly named, too, because this one will make you want to dance.
Sarolta Zalatnay - Álmodj velem (1972) Spotify Youtube - Of its time for sure, but damn great at it! An energetic pop rock record with heavy funk influence helped by Zalatny's strong vocals - she's really got a voice for the genre and is clearly feeling it.
(2014) Spotify Youtube - Slowing down a bit and moving alt. The album flows incredibly well and you really get pulled in over the course of it.
Margareta Pâslaru - În grădina bucuriilor (1975) Youtube - Not on spotify, to my great displeasure, but Youtube link provided if you can excuse the audio quality (please do <3). As the tracks won't be included on the playlist, I'll point out Ce Nu Știm and Nu, N-a Fost Glumă (La Mélancolie), which also happen to showcase the versatility of this album really well, imo. May or may also feature a surprise cover that utterly delighted me.
Ada Milea - Aberații sonore (1997) Spotify Youtube - I'm not gonna lie, I absolutely fell in love with this record. Like, this being Milea's debut is mindblowing to me. It's incredible. I will also blindly admit that it's not for everyone - it does not shy away from being artsy or avant in any way, but, in my opinion, it manages to do it without being annoying. This was one of those were I had a hard time picking out tracks because it just kept giving. It's just so incredibly fun is the truth of it, and I adored every second of it.
Anastasia Lazariuc - Cine poate ști (1997) Spotify Youtube - Europop at its most energetic and interesting. Look, if this album doesn't boost your energy, I don't know what will. Absolutely one to dance to.
Jana Kirschner - Krajina rovina (2010) Spotify Youtube - Arguably another obvious inclusion, but Kirschner really is a skilled songwriter. The production on this is top-notch, too - the tracks are multilayered and playful, not to mention well-structured and composed. You can - and should - really dig into this one, there's so much to take from.
... And there we have it! The end. For now.
I hope you have even just a fraction as much fun with listening to this as I did. If you have any further recommendations please feel free to share! Mwah <3
