It's been quite awhile since I've mentioned the "casts" of my books. I released the first book in the Monster Tamer Sisters duology the other day (https://www.amazon.com/Monster-Tamer-Sisters-Aron-Lewes-ebook/dp/B0DS4NLFVC) and to be honest, I only really had actors in mind for the two male leads in the series. Kelcian was a young Killian Scott, and Denny was Nicholas Denton, who I discovered in Dangerous Liaisons. (Starz did that show so dirty!)
My friend @pineconeenchanting kindly drew Kelcian and Aggy from the first book, and I wanted to share her art too.
This series is a little bit steampunk, a lot fantasy, and a considerable dose of (wholesome) romance as well. It has cute monsters in it, and it's only 99 cents for a limited time.

Silvia and everyone else at the Otherworld Academy hopes you enjoy your 4th of July celebrations!
Levi Walker died by Truck-Kun and found himself reincarnated on the magical world of Taryl. With a new body comes a whole new curriculum as he's expected to enroll in the Otherworld Academy, a prestigious institute that trains magi to hone their magical prowess. If that's not enough, Levi's been sorted into the smallest house in the school, told he's a Demon Lord, and his dominant magic is beast taming.
But Levi's never been one to focus on the negative. With beautiful classmates, entrancing faculty, and a very sassy squirrel at his side, he's ready to make Taryl his new home.
This series contains all 6 books of the Otherworld Academy series, as well as Otherworld Vacation, a short story which takes place between the first two books. The tales include unconventional romances, steampunk shenanigans, and anime tropes. Not suitable for those under the age of 18.

sbg characters as the steampunk au i'm writing :3
ashlyn: daughter of a famous pair of military leaders. despite her very high position in society due to her parents' work, they've let her take one of the lower-class jobs, because of her hearing sensitivity. she is one of the officers who patrol the city/town
aiden: also has a high position in society due to his parents being part of the government. he lives in one of the higher society sectors, and has almost unlimited wealth. he's a pilot-in-training, but sometimes leaves or skips the training sessions
taylor: provides for her family by being one of the warehouse workers. her position is middle-class. she fixes up airships/blimps and other vehicles that are broken in general. she spends most of her time in the warehouses, either covered in grease, oil, or both. she's strangely gifted for someone middle class
tyler: like taylor, he's also a middle-class citizen. he's an artist apprentice in one of shops in town, and spends the other half of his time making jewelry. he's also very talented for someone his age. he's usually away from the house
ben: he's still aiden's cousin, and is also very high-class. after he lost his voice, he spends time at his own home. he's sometimes requested to visit some of the governments' members' houses to play music, which he gets paid for. some of his talents are playing violin, piano, and the harp
logan: he still works at his grandparents' shop, where he's an apprentice botanist. his grandparents ship plants from other regions/cities to do research on, which he partakes in. he's still unusually talented at using the shotgun
+++
i'm contemplating whether or not to add magic ajsduwjshjss

Unlimited Fantasy, Second Edition
Unlimited Fantasy Second Edition, Eternal Autumn Games, 2006
Back when I reviewed Monster Wrangler I mentioned a game with 150 classes. That game was the first edition of Unlimited Fantasy (UF), published in 1996. It was a slimmed-down D&D-alike (well, slimmer on rules anyway) that threw together all kinds of very interesting classes into some unfortunately ill-defined, overlapping, and occasionally unnecessary niches. The classes filled the whole scatter plot with Interesting-to-Boring on one axis and Overpowered-to-Counterproductive on the other.
I was going to write a review of UF, but it turns out that there's a 2nd edition that's much more interesting. In some ways it's a completely different game, because instead of being a D&D1e knockoff it's an alternative PHB along the lines of Arcana Evolved or True20. It streamlines the rules a little, which is good because it needs space for all 120 classes, most of which did not appear in the previous set.
So - d20 System, usual six stats, 20 levels, HP/AC/BAB/etc, you know the drill get to the interesting part - what are the classes? Here's a sample:
Acrobat
Anemone Warrior
Cat Priest
City Walker
Death Cultist
Detonator
End-Timer
Freedom Seeker
God-Throne
Indigo Magus
Mountain-at-Arms
Queen of Rats
Time Monk
Unattainable
Whisper Shadow
The biggest problem, of course, is analysis paralysis when making your character.
The class balance is surprisingly good. It's not like I played every class, but someone clearly has. It's honestly better than D&D3.5 - everything is the equivalent of Tier 2 or 3 in the classic tier list. However, a lot depends on the GM. If you're not playing a game that involves the Shadow Realm, playing a Blue Shadow Devil is not going to be very helpful. If you're outside the Ring Cities, there's no point in being a Ring Eminence Oracle, because your powers only work there. It helps that spell lists are much more focused.
The setting is detailed mostly through the classes themselves. It's a nigh-apocalyptic fantasy setting with smatterings of Victorian steampunk, Mad Max, and Shanara. If you're a GM who likes piecing together settings like a puzzle, or who's happy dropping a bunch of miscellaneous info into your own world, this will be fun. Someone looking for a detailed setting or NPCs who are more than a name and position will be disappointed.
The art is almost entirely class images. There's also the cover, an inner front cover, a back piece, and a few color plates in the center. No incidental art. The styles match well, but they're a bit more cartoonish and amateur than I enjoy.
If you can pick it up used, it's fun to read a few classes. Eternal Autumn Games shuttered their doors after printing this and getting curb-stomped by D&D4e a year and a half later.

back in Kindle Unlimited...and I want to read your books
If any of you have published in KU feel free to reply/reblog with your stories!!
(Until May, at least)
What I like to read:
Fantasy exclusively, just imagine all the next bullets have "fantasy" on them
Short novels/novellas/short stories
Gaslamp/steampunk/not-just-medieval timeframe
Either super funny/cozy
...OR super dark horror gorefests
Whump tbh
Queer characters!!!
Especially asexual characters, bonus if there's a romantic element
(I just like the queer element to be discussed and pretty important, even if it's not a coming out story)
Polyam/reverse harem
Retellings of myths and fairy tales
Elves that remind you more of The Dragon Prince and Dragon Age than ACOTAR (all my love to ACOTAR)
Magical creatures that aren't often the leading folks in books (centaurs? Satyrs? Succubi? I could go on)
Hyperspecific: beautiful posh boys who are vile wretched little creatures
If any of this sounds like you please help me stock my Kindle 🙏 I must consume new indie stories
PS. If I like it I can guarantee you that I'll write a review
And if I don't like it I can guarantee you that I'll flip through all the pages regardless so you get your coin

That twiluna steampunk fic I mentioned comes to the rescue with yet another characterization I really like, but this time for Rainbow Dash
She has aspirations of being an explorer---despite being stuck in her dead-end job---but tries too hard to fit into the Gentlemare Adventurer archetype, so she puts on a fake British accent all of the time, and it's honestly a fun motivation for her. She's also quick-witted, as in a standoff, she gave an out to the other characters that not even Twilight thought of. Finally, she straight up punches an evil university professor that had been mistreating Pinkie Pie for pretty much her entire life.
Unrelated, but some other fun things that I like about this fic:
Rarity literally starts drooling when she first sees Applejack---who is described to be very muscular---and this leads to some very funny moments between the two
Rarity having some badass moments like using her cigarette to light the throne room on fire, or intentionally giving uncorrected math equations to cover up plans
characters having knowledge that makes the setting more believable, like Twilight and Pinkie being inventors, Applejack being a handymare, and Rainbow being able to charge really powerful lightning
no spoilers, but I REALLY like the directions this story takes, and it's not just a steampunk retelling of the first two episodes of the show
Alright, I think that's enough gushing about this fic, but it proves as a great example as to why I often like fan content more than canon content for anything, not just MLP
I heard rarity starts drooling over applejack and passed out. what did i miss Srsly tho ya should link the fic; i agree completely that fanon content is often better, because we get the benefit of hindsight and unlimited restrctions! Both of my long-form fics have been AUs, one which i reased the equestria girls world from canon, and another where i literaly made the shrek story into rarijack. fantasy world mlp ahoy

What are your sister and yours opinions on wicked?
she thinks that the actors were able to show a lot more nuance subtlety than onstage because of the close cinematography. And that the physical sets and less dramatic costumes made the aesthetics of the movie feel a lot more integrated into the story than the steampunk stuff in the play. or something.
I think the orchestrations are fabulous and I love how the score incorporates motifs from the songs. I really loved Cynthia and Ariana basically the whole time they were onscreen. I do also think the 'unlimited' section at the end of defying gravity completely kills the momentum of the song, and Jeff Goldblum's singing in A Sentimental Man felt very stiff compared to Joel Grey's wonderfully nuanced performance in the OBC recording.

do you like reading fantasy? do you like magical swords, wizards and dragons? do you want to get into anime/manga but dont know how? well im a weeb and a fantasy nerd who has nothing better to do so here are some recs ig
Do you like the Cosmere for the convoluted magical systems and the creative ways the magic is used in fights? Watch Jujutsu Kaisen. First season has 24 episodes, there is one prequel movie (good place to start too) and a second season coming soon. You could also read the manga, but I personally think the anime is easier to follow and overall more enjoyable to me (on the other hand, the manga comes with Extensive notes on how the magic works so you might prefer that). Another good show is Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood (on Netflix, 64 episodes).
Do you like the Cosmere for the interconnected large universe and The Lore(tm)? Get into Fate. You know how Cosmere fans loooove talking about timelines and where to start with the Cosmere? You can do that again with Fate, even more complicated this time! A good place to start would be either Fate/Stay Night: Unlimited Blade Works or Fate/Zero. Both are on Netflix, UBW has 26 episodes and Zero has 25. You could go straight to the source material, the visual novels, but I haven't played them so I can't talk about them.
Do you like Realm of the Elderlings, or historical fantasy? Watch Vinland Saga. The first season has 24 episodes, second one is currently coming out weekly (close to finishing), and it is on Netflix. Haven't read the manga but it seems to have some really good art. Another option would be (I think) Berserk, but since I haven't read/watched that, I can't really say. SIDENOTE but if you like Black Sails you should also check out Vinland Saga im so serious. BS isnt fantasy but i needed to get that out there.
Do you like The Locked Tomb? This one is quite obvious but watch Revolutionary Girl Utena, it inspired the books *a lot*. It has 39 episodes, a movie and a manga, general consensus is that the manga is not very good so just watch the show. Look up trigger warnings. And you might also want to check out Puella Magi Madoka Magica (the original show has just 12 episodes, theres a lot of extra content but I have not seen/read the rest so i would say its not necessary).
Do you like an epic adventure and a giant world filled with amazing places to explore? Completely unironically you SHOULD read or watch One Piece. Fantasy fans already get into gargantuan book series with thousands of pages what is a thousand episodes to you? I assure you it is worth it. Hunter x Hunter is also good, I can't say much about it because I just started it recently.
More general recs under read more.
Little Witch Academia. Cute fluffy show about teenage witches. Some similarities with The Owl House on Disney.
Witch Hat Atelier. Manga only for now, follows a young girl who gets taken in as a witch's apprentice, has some darker elements.
Re: Zero. Guy from our world gets sent to another world and then dies a bunch of times. Psychological horror in a fantasy setting.
Akatsuki no Yona. Princess goes on an adventure to find legendary dragons and save her kingdom. Some romance.
Vanitas no Carte. Vampires in a steampunk setting. Gay (?)
Black Clover. Basically whatever you think Naruto is about, but shorter and more goofy. Boy with no magic wants to the greatest wizard of all time, gets beefy.
Ghibli movies: Kiki's Delivery Service, Ponyo, Princess Mononoke, The Tale of Princess Kaguya, The Castle in the Sky, The Cat Returns, Spirited Away. These movies are more on the magical realism / low fantasy side.
Noragami. Supernatural. Gods and spirits are real and walk among us, the story follows a god who has no followers and a girl who accidentally becomes half-spirit. Some cool fights. Really great music.
Shadows House. Creepy house where shadow people live, along with their "living dolls".
Dungeon Meshi. Manga with upcoming anime, havent read it but seems like a fun adventure with some horror elements (?) but mostly about cooking and monsters.

Okay so I’ve been a huge Old Guard fan since the comics and recently binged all of Deo Volante and KoS on the recommendation of a friend and loved absolutely every bit of them. The same friend said I absolutely had to read all of your works but I don’t overlap into any of the other fandoms- I know a bit about Good Omens and Sandman through tumblr osmosis and a bit less about Shadow and Bone, then nothing at all about Timeless and some of the others.
The friend in question said most of your works are similar to KoS in that they’re completely separate AUs that reference/cameo canon but can be appreciated and understood without reading them (I believe they specifically mentioned one called Promised Land or something that was that way?) and I just want to poke in and ask if you’d also say that was the case, like which of your works (if any) can be read and appreciated without having read actual canon and if there are any I should avoid until I’ve read/watched the source material?
Aha, thanks so much. I think one of the highest compliments you can give a fic writer is to want to read their stuff even from fandoms that you yourself are not in, so yes. This will not by any means be an exhaustive list (you can find my full AO3 profile here, I have a lot of fics and most of them are, uh, Long) but some highlights that you might enjoy include:
Shadow and Bone:
This is the "Promised Land" fic referenced by your friend above. It's a historical AU set in the 1980s Soviet Union. You don't really need to know anything about the source material to enjoy it, and other fans of mine who weren't familiar with SaB have read this and liked it.
The Sandman:
This will introduce you both to the characters and the ship (Dreamling) in the course of a long historical saga. This one isn't an AU; it's canon-verse (for the TV show) all throughout, but it's designed in a way that doesn't really rely on knowing the TV show beforehand (and especially since this ship became a fan favorite after literally 30 minutes in half an episode).
Timeless:
This is another of the fics of mine that people who don't know the source material have read and enjoyed. It's an AU set in a magical steampunk Victorian universe, and features one of my favorite Garbage Men of all time, Garcia Flynn. Blowing up things, as he does, and being outmatched by a tiny and feisty historian named Lucy.
Also, if you are a KoS fan, I have exciting news for you, in that I'm currently working on an original-novel rebuild of it based on the same premise, featuring all-new characters, world, relationships, plots, etc., entitled The Empire of Bones. I have just finished part 2 (of a planned 3) and am planning to publish it when I'm done, probably independently but possibly also looking for a tradpub deal (depending on how much hassle that proves to be; I have tried it before and don't have unlimited patience). Anyway, yes. I'm very excited about this project and am looking forward to being able to share it.
Happy reading!

I just wanted to quickly mention the newest book I've released, The Ghost and Miss Hodge. It's one of Caylen McQueen's (my pen name's) books, but I thought it was worth mentioning here, because it has a STRONG connection to School for Spirits.
I thought I'd share the AI covers I made, which I thought were cool... although they were giving more "cozy mystery" than "paranormal/ghost/steampunk romance."
If anyone out there is looking to contact Caylen, my new email address is [email protected]. Twitter/X insisted on deleting my Caylen McQueen account, but I do have a wordpress blog, which I'd love for you to follow.

genuinely would kill for a companion duo where one of them is from the victorian era and the other is from some fuckin bladerunner shit. i think that could be Fun i think that could be a good time.
Honestly, SAME. There are SO MANY companion ideas that would be a good time! So. Many. Even if you just stick with the contemporary England ones. But honestly, why would you, you could have literally anyone, from any time period.
Just the other day, I was daydreaming about a science fiction nerd from the Eastern Block, whose science fiction background is all the stuff they would have access to. Like, referencing Star Trek is fine and all, but you could have a scifi nerd companion basing their knowledge on Stanisław Lem and Spaceship Orion, how fun would that be?!
Or, you know what, typing this as a response to your ask just made me realize: A Victorian science fiction fan!! Peak steampunk potential! Ideas based on a society who lives for modernity and progress and is fascinated with technology, who believes the human potential is unlimited, and whose idea of the year 2000 looks like this:

Happy WBW!
Tell me about the culture in your world in regards to death and the afterlife.
i.e. what are the most common beliefs about it, is there fear surrounding death or something else, are there any gods of death and how to people in your world feel about them, is there an afterlife that people believe in and how does it work, what rituals and practices are there in regards to the dead (burials, mummification, burying them with important objects, burning the body, etc), and anything else you would like to share
<333
Hello and thank you for the ask!! :D I'll be answering this for my nutcracker retelling Matryoshka Doll & Wooden Soldiers wip, which people can find the introduction to here, and the first writing update here, in case anyone wants any extra context! This is going to be a slightly lengthy post, sorry about that ^^;
So death and the afterlife is a little bit complicated in this story because this particular piece takes place in a larger universe that I've been developing since I was young, but some of the details about its cosmology are a little bit of a spoiler (not that I necessarily plan to publish any of these, but it would be nice for it to be a surprising twist if I decided to do something with it in the future). For reference though, there are gods in this universe, but for the aforementioned reason, I want them to remain as obscure as possible. They're not all too integral to Matryoshka Doll & Wooden Soldiers anyways :,)
Explaining the Dualistic understanding of the world
As the steampunk setting might imply, this story takes place in a mostly secularised country, where the concept of gods and deities are largely absent from every day life. Technology and humanity has dominated and domesticated nature, and they very much live in an era of creation, creativity, invention, etc. The human mind is revered as exceptional with its unlimited potential to bend reality to its own will with the right understanding and components.
In contrast to this, you have the fairies, which have become mythologised by the majority of the population. Fairies, being so closely interconnected to nature, are thus viewed as meddlesome and erratic, punishing humanity's enlightenment with long and violent winters, famine and illness. The culture is very much based on this human/science/technology vs fairies/magic/nature dichotomy, though, again, most people view fairies as mythological representations of nature (much like how many western cultures view them). To humans, magic is not only seen as unrealistic and irrational, but also as chaotic and unpredictable, as opposed to science, which follows a set of laws that allows humans to understand and use it.
Death as an Adversary
So when there's a lack of gods or religious laws, and it's paired with their aversion to magic and anything unnatural, the concept of death and the afterlife become very demystified as well. The afterlife is seen as far too hypothetical and contains very diverse outlooks, but death is just the natural order of organic beings. And because the cycle of life and death is a law that can be understood scientifically, the people, likewise, believe death is something they can learn to understand and control as well (this is a plot point in the story, as Hans gradually loses his human body in exchange for wooden one, which, in turn, strips away his human mortality).
To put it this way; in this culture, death represents nature (as it is a natural part of life, but it has a spontaneous, mystical aspect to it that humans have yet to understand), while the pursuit of immortality (to understand death and defy it) represents humans. Death is terrifying because humans can't control it, but they believe that fairies can, so their fight against fairies is represented by their fight against death as well. Death, in many ways, puts a stop to the human mind and their ability to dominate their surroundings, and thus becomes an adversary in a culture that places such great value on what death takes away from them!
Because of this, death isn't really all too sanctified, and the dead are buried on burial grounds that are a significant distance away from any large towns or cities, creating a stark line between the living and the dead. Again, while the population is largely secular, there's always an underlying fear of magic and fairies, which can't be understood nor controlled by human science. This fear is what mainly influences their behaviour and outlook on things, even if they aren't wholly aware of it. They treat dead bodies as a very "out of sight out of mind" thing, and people are generally expected to move on relatively quickly. They can't control death, but they believe one can control one's own emotions, and that becomes their way of coping.
Outro
Hope this wasn't too confusing! Sorry it's a bit longwinded, but I've never really talked about the world building of this story, so I felt like I had to cover some of the groundwork for my answer to make even a little bit of sense :,) Thank you again for the ask, I really appreciate it! ♡

Still working on my exact headcanons for just how technologically developed Years-of-the-Trees Aman would have been (weighing Tolkien's dislike of modernity against, well, the Noldor existing), but one thing I'm pretty sure they would have had is the printing press.
Movable type? Maybe not, given the way the Tengwar work, but I feel like it's a fair assertion to make that some enterprising Noldo would have come up with a way to make lots of copies of written material quickly.
Consider the ingredients: you have a people who basically live for knowledge and making new things. You have probably unlimited resources. You have immortality, yes, which means that there are probably still some Noldor who do manuscripts by hand for the art of it, but you also probably have at least some of the population who are Impatient and want to know All The Things, Right Now.
There is pretty much every incentive to create this thing, and no real disincentives.
Haven't decided yet whether the final result would be something incredibly streamlined, or a steampunk Rube-Goldberg monstrosity that is nonetheless incredibly efficient.
