Now for the 1920s reimagining of Jonathan Crane ! sorry this explanation is even longer lmao

As everyone's been saying, I should do the rest of the Dork Squad to match 1920s Jervis, and so here is my Jonathan! Easily the hardest to draw out of the three-- but I must say! Despite being outside my expertise, I'm a little surprised how much it looks exactly like I was imagining! Even if it took me ages but that's just procrastination lmao.

Anyways! What is his deal? Well, for one, design wise I did go a more drastically different direction from his usual look by doing a literal scareCROW. He's much more bird like, with a plague doctor mask being common imagery in steampunk, but he's still very southern themed with his messy broken overall strap and patchwork coat. Even his wings are rustic. ( he can't fly just glide btw lol ) Also! I leaned hard into the color orange instead of his usual green gas because it..... bugs me that both Crane and Nygma have a bright green in their color palette. I just want them to have distinct colors if they're going to be a trio. And look how vintage halloweeny he looks !!

So why is he so well dressed out of costume? Well! This Jonathan Crane is not a psychologist at all, here he is the very successful grandfather of horror movies in the silent film era. ( An illustrious origin, i hope canon Crane would be proud lmao ). This is referenced in how his face looks, he's wearing white powder and black makeup that's usually meant to emphasize key features on blurry film like his upper lip and around his eyes. And yes, he just keeps his makeup on during most events, and people just accept he's a little on the... eccentric side.

To me, the archetype of the mad artist fits Jonathan's vibe perfectly. When it comes to striking fear, he's a perfectionist, a trait that drove him to learn every single skill necessary himself, from costume design to props to making his own cameras to mechanical engineering, to.... a "fear gas" that was supposed to gently encourage immersion in the audience but ended up becoming a dangerous chemical weapon.

For his origin crime I am thinking !! Full blown Scooby Doo style monster mystery!! With some nuance! Crane, as a first impression, gives off an immediate air of pompous, aggressively impatient, pretentious director type. His presence is big and dramatic, but its distinctly not southern-- in fact, he seems to play up something between a hollywood accent and a thespian one. But this is all to cover for his farm hick background that he was once very ashamed of.

As a child of a failing farmhand during an infamously dry and dusty era, Jonathan developed an extreme resentment for his country existence from both the bullying of other children for all his strange quirks and the severe verbal and physical abuse of his father, driven to alcoholism by the stress of poverty and the loss of his wife. Originally offering his artistic ideas as a means to help them, he grows sick of their closed mindedness and berating and runs away to learn about the emerging potential of film in Gotham City.

Its been many years, Jonathan now in his early 30s, he finds himself surrounded by the shallow, champagne aristocrats that reflect his childhood bullies. Feeling wrong in his own skin, he develops a sightly unhealthy obsession with the escapism he finds in performing as the monsters in his movies.

But upon discovering that the corrupt rich of Gotham plan to push legislation that would negatively effect farmers like his own history, and that they expected him to be amongst those who support it, his irritation with the shallowness of society reaches its limits. In day, he would feign support for their behavior to cover his tracks, but at night he would don the mask of the Scarecrow, rumored to be the vengeful spirit of a farmer who was hanged, and who he believes to be a more freeing expression of himself than his true face, targeting not just the rich but striking fear in their laborers to scare them off land. And it works. So, he tries bending the will of society more.

Is he doing this out of any moral conviction or just spite and a love for the role? It's... hard to say.

As the Scarecrow, his methods are so effective he's near uncatchable, even by Batman. Its only by solving the mystery of who is under the mask are they able to catch him. They surprise him during one of his screenings, jump him in the dark, and prove his subtle use of fear gas in the theater to the police once he's cornered. Instead of being angry, he goes to the mad house applauding Batman's performance.

What an interesting character they play. He's very inspired.

I'll make a longer post about this later but I like to imagine Sonic's time in Camelot(especially post-SatBK before going home) has made Lancelot realize he's Sonicsexual. This stupid but admirable blue hedgehog has stolen his heart. He'd adore any version of Sonic(within reason) but he'd also accept them as being different from the king that helped him then returned home to Lancelot's lookalike that Lancelot hopes knows he's lucky.

Lancelot has a wife he was separated from thanks to back when he was loyal to the dark version of King Arthur he & the knights use to follow without question.(His wife also hid her face behind a mask all the time) Lancelot wants to fix his relationship with his wife thanks to Sonic making him want to be a better person.

There's a Sonic that lives in Camelot named Coraline(yes this is based off the movie, I made this without knowing anything about King Arthur lore & having only seen SatBK cutscenes), she is a botanist that has studied medicine. She was from a doomed timeline for a Steampunk version of Mobius & has no plans of returning there. Nimue helped her get use to her new home when Coraline appeared in Camelot.

Thanks to her time at her old home world Coraline wears a respirator that looks like a steampunk plague doctor mask just in case. She has a much easier time breathing in Camelot but is still not use to being without her mask. Coraline also looks like a timid Sonic with glasses & longer quills. She left her husband thanks to his pride & blind faith in a questionable person but wishes to reconnect.

Galahad knows where his mom is & has been waiting for his dad to want to be a family before telling him where his mom is.

Playground: some cool bright raver shit,,, something similar to decora but its more extreme :3 also chains that say random stuff like "boss", "king" etc are pretty popular there among the gangs as well. a lot and A LOT of marihuana merch. like you cannot go to a single store in Playground without finding a chain, shirt, etc with the marihuana plant slapped on it. baggy clothing is probably very popular there during winter as well.. also some very revealing ass clothing during summer LMAO.

Blackrock: dark emo goth shit. 20 million studded belts, LOADS of heavy make-up and band tees. also 1920s styled steampunk clothing is probably very popular there as well, usually between older citizens. also plague doctor masks are considered very cool there as well

Thieves' Den- has 2 sides: city/modern and rural/more traditional. for the city/modern fashion I think that gyaru and kawaii pastel would be popular. holographic clothes would also be very popular as well :3 for the rural/more traditional side, I think that it would be basically like traditional Japanese clothing (kimonos, yakutas etc). Slingshot is from the more modern/city side of Thieves' Den while Vine and Shuri are form the rural side of it :]

Lost Temple: cowboy stuff... yea. probably some cringy 2016 galaxy print shirts bc I hc that their humor is still somewhat stuck in 2016. ALSO LEOPARD PRINT COATS UGHHH. it just fits the faction so much idk why. blugh. I think very light skinny jean shorts would be popular there as well because of how fucking hot it is in Lost Temple. ye. couldn't think much

This is hard for me to picture specifics for Doc because I have them quite vacant in my mind. They're more a concept than anything OC related.

In saying that, there's kind of two ways I picture them. One is loose fitting scrubs: all business, but haphazard. The other is a steampunk plague doctor from the 1800s.

It's also kind of difficult to pin down specifically because Doc to me can be read from any perspective - part of the beauty of a non descriptive gn!reader. They are who you picture them to be, wearing whatever you want them to wear.

Rex would make a gorgeous plague doctor, not gonna lie. I'd love to see that 🖤. Masquerade mask, hat, similar attire to the governess inspired look you've drawn prior, but with an apron over the top covered in fluids. She'd be spectacular 😤👌.

I really like the band Ghost

(rest hidden under cut because I got a bit carried away :P)

they're a swedish hard rock/metal band with a focus on the occult and stanism, they have a really evocative image, with the instrumentalists wearing masks and dark clothing, they used to be like plague doctor masks, then onto silvery metal ones, and their most recent change was to these steampunk masks and victorian outfits

the lead singer papa emeritus has face paint that looks like a skull and wears all sorts of outfits

their music is awesome, a lot of people describe it as 'metal for people who don't like metal' and I kinda get it, they're heavier than something like foo fighters but they're not like lamb of god or anything. the discourse on whether ghost counts as metal i don't care, i say their metal because why not.

their songs lean very much to gothic and satanic themes, like their whole discography is really good and have some great standout tracks

their live performances are amazing, when I saw them they had a huge satanic church backdrop and great lightshow and pyrotechnics and AAAAA (i loved them live)

all the members have great personalities on stage, they have all sorts of fun things in songs like the shimmy attack or papa nihil's revival during the song miasma

personal fav (sadly I can't find a video of it) is two of the female backup singers during the song miasma were being really really really gay with each other, like hand running down the other's face, i think they even did a little kiss, and when one was walking away the other bumped their hips with them when beginning descending the stairs

my fav example of them live is their performance of the song year zero when they were in melbourne, just a great time overall and showcase how much fun they are

theres an underlying storyline regarding the singer papa emeritus and a bunch of other stuff, I haven't really gotten into it. there's a ghost movie coming out at some point this year but i'm not really interested in it, i just like the music

the identities of the band members are largely anonymous, although if you go looking you can easily find who is who in the band, the main consistent member is the lead singer Tobias Forge who, at least from what I can tell, is really cool. ghost did a cover of Enter Sandman as part of like a charity thing and the charity he chose was a camp for transgender kids

I really like ghost, not as much as other people but yeah

Saw the little nightmares 3 trailer got released and wanted to hear your thoughts on it. Is there anything in particular that you're excited for or just generally hyped about?

Also sorry if this question comes across weird I have no clue about the series but remembered you enjoyed it and drew some stuff for it so I thought it'd be fun to talk about it if that makes sense?

Oh I have so many thoughts on it. So many that I'm going to put them below the cut so this post doesn't take up anyone's entire dash.

First of all, damn my copious amounts of coursework for the fact that I couldn't sit down and start drawing fanart immediately the moment I finished watching the trailer once… or twice… maybe three times. Mark my words though these kids WILL be getting some day 2 (actual) art, even if it's just a little sketch.

…Point being, I was pretty excited right out of the gate. Admittedly, I was a little nervous that the studio changeover would mean that any (potential) future Little Nightmares content would mean a massive tonal shift, but based on the trailer alone + the additional guides related to the game, it nails the atmosphere of the previous games pretty damn well. Hell, the giant baby enemy even resembles some of the concept art from the flesh walls!

Already, Nowhere is combining some of my favorite things (notably locations that seem/are "alive", steampunk motifs, and copious amounts of birds… also reminds me a little bit of Zone 3 from OFF, but that's probably just me), but most notably is the fact that it actually seems to resemble some of the locations seen in the (tragically cancelled) 2017 comics. This is particularly notable in the first issue, which features two children taking shelter in a barn from a monster known as the North Wind (who is made of/"sees through" the eyes of black birds, presumably crows), but the second issue is about a monster that lives within mirrors, which are shown a lot in the trailer as well. Either way, I'm cautiously hoping for some references to the comics, especially because we never got to learn what happened to the rest of the Maw kids there (the answer is probably "they died horribly" but I mean hey. You never know).

The designs of the two protagonists are, of course, adorable. I love the plague doctor/gas mask duo (especially because having face coverings makes sense in such a dusty place) and the bit where they both glide down using feather umbrellas is genuinely so fun—absolutely no complaints there.

…Actually, one complaint: I have no idea which one is Low and which one is Alone. None of the official sources have clarified that. Please LN3… I need to know the names of my new kids before they get put into the meat grinder like every other protagonist in these games. (Given the series' track record, I'm not too optimistic about their fates—sorry little guys! I'll be rooting for you anyway). EDIT: It seems like Low is the bird mask kid and Alone is the hazard suit kid

Mechanically… I don't think we've seen enough of the game for me to make any hasty judgements. I know everyone wanted LN2 to be multiplayer (and LN3 appears to have a singleplayer option), but I'm unsure of how that will work. Will it be Spiritfarer style multiplayer where only one player has to own LN3? Will it be online? Will it be splitscreen? Will me inevitably ditching the main campaign to screw around with my friend ruin the atmosphere? No idea. The way I see it, it's too soon to tell.

While we're on the topic though, I did also listen to the first episode of the audio drama! Without spoiling anything… yeah I can definitely recommend it. It's very reminiscent of The Magnus Archives and/or The Bright Sessions, so if you like either of those podcasts you'll probably like The Sounds of Nightmares. Even if you know absolutely nothing about Little Nightmares, I'd honestly recommend it. Voice mixing is a little off in places (though there's a decent chance it was just my headphones being fucky), but the podcast MORE than makes up for it in terms of imagery and phenomenal sound design. No word on the lore implications though; I'll listen to episode 2 when I get the time and THEN deliver the verdict there. I also hope they release an official transcript for it—there isn't one right now afaik, but that would be really helpful for a multitude of reasons.

But yeah, that's about it! TL;DR hell yeah I'm excited for this game, but I'm trying not to fill in the blanks with too much supposition while there's still so little info available
