my music taste is kinda weird. because I've got my classic rock hits, my Irish pub rock songs (it's mainly the Pogues), my traditional folk music from the British Isles, my Broadway and otherwise musical theater songs, as well as some basic pop to fill it all out. And usually that's all pretty good, I gravitate towards one genre or the other as the mood takes me, and I'm quite satisfied.
But sometimes I look at my bounty of music, and it fails to fulfill my craving. And then I look to the dark corners, and there are the Others...
#my current most played artists are a 1800s steampunk band a group of traveling vaudeville automatons and a time-traveling brit with an ape#not to mention the goth with a guitar#the artists are The Cog Is Dead-Steam Powered Giraffe-Professor Elemental-and Aurelio Voltaire if you're interested#music#steampunk#music taste#my playlist

Fanart for Steam Powered Giraffe songs I draw a while back but want to share here too.
First one is Necrostar (using refs from album artwork) and the other is my attempt of making a Mama Sky Sharks from Sky Sharks.
If you like macabre steampunk vaudeville about robots then I totally recommend this group.

Taking this as my chance to offer steampunk bands! Hello! I’m Cog, and I’ve loved steampunk for like 6 years 👍 here’s a big list of bands I myself listen to and love!
First off, here’s my own steampunk playlist! Below the cut is a list of bands I love. Feel free to recommend me any more if you know of any <3
Cool Steampunk bands you should know about
Abney Park — one of the oldest running Steampunk bands I currently know of and follow! Steampunk pirates, who still put on fantastic online concerts. Recommended for techno likers, or general pirate enthusiasts!
Steam Powered Giraffe — another very cool Steampunk band — one of the most popular I believe! Three singing musician automatons, each with their own lore. Wonderful performances, both serious and silly songs, and they did the soundtrack for the (also steampunk!) great game known as Steamworld Heist. And as of now, Steamworld heist II!
The Cog Is Dead — A great Steampunk band with very impressive storytelling songs! Also does a lot of covers, ranging from We Are Number One to Old Town Road! (I actually highly recommend watching their own cover of their own song, Another Cog in the Machine, but done in 25 different Steampunk styles!)
Frenchy and the Punk — I’ve had the pleasure of seeing them live, wonderful people, great music! More of a gothic folk blend, but with unique things such as batfrogs, they never disappoint!
The Mechanisms — Disbanded, and I sadly don’t know much about their lore. They have wonderful music however, seem to be great performers! I know they have a wonderful fan base here on tumblr
Voltaire — Gothic Dark Cabaret, with lots of fantastical guitar. Very impressive vocals as well! Another highly recognizable artist, Voltaire deals with macabre topics in a fantastic style.
Vernain Process — Steampunk with a progressive rock twist! Another early Steampunk pioneer band, they’re more slow—but very heavy. Like you’re in a mad scientist’s laboratory!
Unwoman — A fantastic cellist, she’s put out lots of original albums, all with fantastic music. Her music to me feels like I’m at a ball—dressed to impress, with her music playing.
This Way to the Egress — Steampunk, Dark Cabaret, and a bouncy style!
Caravan of thieves — Also Dark cabaret, more swing style. With songs such as 'eat you' and 'Rattlesnake' They really got a wide array of songs. More guitar focused instrumentals
Professor Elemental — silly British rap! With lore, a book, and quite the whimsy, Professor Elemental has great vibes, and knows how to have a good time.
Spiky — instrumentals, would listen to this for a dnd campaign music.
The Peculiar Pretzelmen — Do you like metal? How about metal being slammed together? They can be classified as dieselpunk, or more rock/punk, but I sincerely love them!
The Men That Will Not Be Blamed — Another rock-adjacent band, I haven’t listened to all of their songs but they’re pretty good!
Pretty Balanced — One of my favorite bands! They are a wonderful band that I wish got more recognition. They also have a precursor band, called The Alphabet
Victor and the Bully — Fantastical music and stories. Pretty bouncy, with hits like Spooky 365! Highly recommend checking out Madam Misfit as well.
Mr. B The Gentleman Rhymer — Back to whimsy! Similar to Professor Elemental, Mr. B brings about a chap hop rap. Even having a collaboration with Professor Elemental, he also has a lot of whimsy.
Now, a list of some others.
Clockwork Knotwork
Humanwine
Unextraordinary Gentlemen
Marquis Of Vaudeville
Rasputina
Automaton
The Brass Knuckle Steampunk Sinfonia
Not a band, but honorable mention to The Dolls of New Albion, A Steampunk Opera by Paul Shapera!
why are people so mean to steampunk. what did steampunk do to you. are you too good for cogs? too good for goggles and a top hat? hmm??? bitch

A concept for you, steampunk robot hermits
Well you're in luck! We have the perfect fic for you.
Everybody's going to the Clockwork Vaudeville Everybody wants to see the show People clap and stop their feet and join in with the robot beat While music and song fill the air
But, not everybody makes it out, the same... There's a new show at the county fair, and Tango wants to go see it.
Steampunk, Robots, and Hermitcraft are by far a favorite of mine, so putting them together is perfect.
_______
And now a few headcanons separate from the fic.
Tango is the resident robot of the hermit craft server and can easily change bodies. He has a steampunk body because, why not, it looks cool and could come in handy some day.
Bdubs was made a robot after a particularly nasty respawn that could have been fatal otherwise. Doc was running low on supplies so a somewhat stylized steampunk design was the best choice for the time and situation. A hodgepodge and thrown together robot. He did get a proper android body after some time. You can see this idea more here.
Mumbo was temporarily turned into a robot due to the season 7 spookifacator. He leaned fully into the steampunk.
_______
A lot of inspiration for these Fics and head cannons was drawn from the band Steam Powered Giraffe. Definitely worth a listen if you got some time to spare or are looking for some music.

Single Review: Steam Powered Giraffe – Various Tracks
So first off, I have been a fan of this group since about 2011/2012 and it is one of my biggest regrets in life that I didn’t get a chance to go along with Tori B Bearly to see them when they came to the UK in August 2016 to perform at The Asylum Steampunk Festival in Lincoln.
Anyway, @officialsteampoweredgiraffe are an American steampunk musical group from San Diego, who formed in 2008. They describe themselves as “a musical act that combines robot pantomime, puppetry, ballet, comedy, projections, and music”. It would be easy to say that part of their appeal is the novelty of their act, and it certainly helps to get people interested, and much like The Lonely Island, Flight of the Conchords and Ninja Sex Party they also have to balance the comedy element of their act with the musical element which is a lot harder than you would think.
But honestly Steam Powered Giraffe not only succeed but flourish, they produce a rich, amazing performance that incorporates elements of folk rock, Vaudeville, comedy and as mentioned before steampunk. On top of all that they have their own narrative and mythology when performing, roles and backstory that build to create something that’s truly interesting. This backstory is expounded upon further in a comic book series which you can check out here.
