How to Motivate Yourself to Exercise
Despite the promises we make ourselves, studies show that around 90% of us give up on exercise routines, after only a few months.
When it comes to exercise, consistency and commitment to exercising are key to seeing results, so staying motivated is essential. Here are some suggestions on how to keep our exercise promises.
Find something you enjoy doing
It is important to enjoy exercising. The more you do, the more you'll stick to your routine. It's essential to find something that really gets you going and that you look forward to.
Set yourself small, achievable goals
Set yourself small, but achievable goals, one you know you can stick to. Saying you want to lose two stone in a month – the likelihood of that is, it probably isn't going to happen. Create yourself some small and achievable goals that you are able to achieve, and your motivation levels will increase even further.
Stick to a routine
Setting some structure for exercising works because you know what to expect from the week ahead, but be sure to schedule some rest days in there, too.
Change your perspective
Shift your focus to how exercise can make you feel. From boosting your mood and confidence to increasing productivity and improving the quality of your sleep, when we accept the positive benefits exercise can bring, we are more likely to create lasting changes.
Set a routine that works for you
Whether it’s daily or weekly, think about your exercise schedule. If you find it difficult to exercise in the mornings, find another time that suits you better. If doing a daily workout doesn’t work, start with one every two or three days. If an hour doesn’t suit you, start with 20 minutes. You can always adjust your exercise times. The important thing is to stick to it as best as you can.
Share
Tell anyone and everyone about your workout routine, even if they don’t want to hear it, and if you’re private just whisper it to a friend or partner. By telling others and discussing your fitness goals, you gain more clarity and helps with your confidence.
Hopefully you’ll have your friends or partner cheering you on and supporting your efforts. Never be embarrassed to share it.
