Scorn and the Saint-Maker, chapter 17: I’d like for you and I to go romancing
Scorn and the Saint-Maker is a murder mystery/ineffable husbands romance/who-turned-them-human Good Omens fanfic, set at a university in Scotland, with lots of (as-yet skippable) level-5 smut, ✨sexy maths✨ (reportedly), and one trans angel
Chapter details and art WIPs below ⬇️⬇️
Chapter 17 summary: Fell and Crowley take a day trip to Edinburgh to gatecrash a conference. We discuss maths, strangers, and nomenclature.
Rating: Chapter rated M for a tiny smut (literally one sentence; skippable). Fic rated E.
Excerpt:
Fell smirked his most bastardly smirk and turned his head in the direction in which the stranger had left. “You told that gentleman… that…” Anthony Crowley, quickest mind in Aberdeen (probably), needed several seconds to realise that Fell wasn’t taking an artful pause with a hand still mid-gesture, but had in fact lost his train of thought entirely. Cleverly deducing that his intent stare must mean he had seen something interesting, he followed it with his own, further into the cemetery. Crowley could not be certain that he and Fell were looking at the same thing, but there certainly weren’t many things in sight that caught Crowley’s eye quite as effectively. “That’s a big-ass angel,” he commented.

"Professor Agarwal, you're an idiot" 🎨
I had to redraw this three times. Bloody thing caused me a crumpled-up sheet of aquarelle paper! That never happens. And it was all Crowley's fault: the How's Your Naked Man Friend reaction face is an absolute joy and worked out brilliantly every time.
The lecture hall background, general layout, and bits of Fell's position (even the sceptical lady in the back) used a House MD shot as reference, by the way. @firstvisittoearth might be interested to know that the House-coding is showing in the art now. 🙃
Besmirching Edinburgh 🎨
In case you didn't see my sketch yesterday (which is already my most popular post this month, ok ok I get the message I'll draw more smooches ❤️)
This had me move stuff around A LOT while editing. I also tried out a new set of watercolours that my partner's gifted me. Verdict: eh, good and bad. Definitely need to play around more to figure them out. I ended up using the old ones for the faces and some of the sky anyway (and still had to adjust digitally, idk if I should take a bloody class or if I just need more skintone colours to play with...)

John Bulloch Souter - The Breakdown (1926)
The Breakdown is a strikingly accomplished painting. Yet it was the subject that caused controversy, as the painting depicts a black saxophonist, sitting on a shattered classical statue of Minerva, the goddess of music, while a naked white woman dances to his music. The woman appears to move as though in a trance, totally abandoning herself to the music, and her discarded clothing and shoes are visible in the far corner of the composition. Within days of its exhibition, the British Colonial office contacted the Royal Academy to request the removal of the picture for 'reasons of state, not art' and 'in the interest of the empire.'
Souter claimed that his painting was intended to 'to illustrate the tendency nowadays for Jazz influence to permeate our daily lives,' and this was true, jazz was beginning to filter through into wider cultural life and in many circles the radical change this represented, towards freedom and a breaking down of strict social norms, was met with celebration and enthusiasm. Yet, at the same time, the British Empire, and the wider racism it represented, were obviously felt to be under threat, and the incident was featured in news stories as far as the U.S.A., India and South Africa and records made of society figures making comments such as, 'it would make ruling our natives difficult.'
As cultural researcher George McKay explains, the idea of Jazz had become at this time a catch-all for wider concerns about new social freedoms in the post-war era, as well as the perceived instability of the empire; everything felt to be 'disruptive, chaotic and dangerous,' could be located within this scene, and thus read either positively, or negatively, into the picture. We can even read Souter's title as part of the dichotomy around the reception of jazz; on one hand the freedom it represented, but on the other the suspicions around its subversive nature. The very term 'breakdown' could be referring to a musical concept, or in a wider sense, the breakdown of the established order.
Most surprisingly, some of the British music establishment reacted strikingly negatively, the editor of Melody Maker, spoke out on the picture on behalf of the whole music scene, claiming 'We jazz musicians … protest against, and repudiate the juxtaposition of an undraped white girl with a black man,' the picture represents a 'perversive danger to the community and the best thing that could happen to it is to have it … burnt!' In fact, Souter did destroy the original painting following the outcry, but kept his original drawings and studies. The subject and painting obviously remained important to him, as much later in his career, he painted a new version, which he dated 1926-62, acknowledging the time that had passed. (source)

No one: …
Me: So I know Lestat's the main character of Prince Lestat, but did any of the other beloved characters see the warning signs of the Voice/Amel in the world before it started going around compelling the old ones into killing younglings.
Sorry, killing young ones. And what might those warning signs have looked like?
Prince Lestat is meant to be read as a sequel to Queen of the Damned and, structurally, its many view points succeeds in that goal. However, thematically, there was so much a missed opportunity in actually seeing many of our favourite characters still existing in the aftermath of maybe as little as a decade still scrambling with the grief and loss and so many abruptly silenced minds...
None of them were... doing well... post-Akasha. But then the tension begins to build again.
Slowly, at first. Disconnected fragments across the continents of the world.
Because it's not like these immortals have ever been the best at communicating directly:—
The Coven and the Courtiers - A Guide (QotD 1.5)
Khayman is with Maharet, never straying too far from the jungles of the Amazon, when he picks up the first murmurings of malcontent from the spirit they moved from Akasha into Mekare. It is not happy within its new host. But perhaps it wasn't happy in its previous host either. Akasha sat as a statue under Marius for centuries before ever waking up. Khayman wonders if they're going to have that long again.
Marius is in Brazil with Daniel. He cannot help himself from scanning nearby minds, even as he claims a hope to remain on the sidelines of their world after the disastrous end of his two millennia caring for the Mother and Father. Marius is therefore one of the first who hears word of a very early and isolated Burning that doesn't seem to have any connection back to Akasha. But it would be foolish to ignore them completely, especially when the last Burnings are still so recent.
Pandora's returned to Arjun in India, but he has begun to act strangely. Because of the veil between their minds, she can only ever understand it through the words he offers for explanation. He wishes for the sanctuary of the earth. Inwardly, Pandora wonders if it was her urge to rush to Marius' aid when he was encased in the ice. She doesn't think it was her alliance with Santino, who is now of course dead to them all. She watches Arjun—before he goes into the ground—because he is the love of her life. She watches him because something deep within tells her something's not right.
Mael was filled with a profound sense of purpose during the first Burning. He would look after Maharet and Jesse. Yet, he had failed in that. Since the Burning, Khayman has taken over as Maharet's consort and companion and that's left Mael with... nothing. His maker Avicus has a new coven in Geneva now, with immortals as old as Gregory and as young as Davis. If Avicus thinks of Mael at all, he has no cause to think it. He's had a very long life but, without any sense of purpose calling him, there is no long any care in him. Not for himself, not for any his kind.
Bianca's in Paris with her new fledgling. They never imagine anything could hurt them. Why would they? The first Burning passed them over without so much as coming near them. There's a rumour passed around Europe lately that bringing one into the blood no longer seems to be happening the way it used to. Tales of mute zombies with hearts that won't beat—truly dead things in the place of fledglings—abound. But even that's easy to ignore when Bianca and her own fledgling feel so young, and in love, and immortal.
David is one of three who were mortal during the last interaction with a Queen of Vampires. He and Jesse talk about it sometimes. Jesse has kept up contact with the Great Family in South America, just as David kept some of his contacts within the Talamasca in Britain, younger ones who didn't mind seem to mind when he became a vampire. The same ones Marius' maker Teskhamen has also given his life into the hands of. They're the ones to bring David's attention to Burnings-related incidents as they start making the news on human television stations. They're the ones to ask him if this is something they should be worried about.
Gabrielle alone is able to say that—when the Queen descended on them the last time—she was the one in risk of losing her only remaining son. She knows many think her cold, but they don't know the pain of burying a child born of their womb. Gabrielle has hardened herself because it's the only protection she's found for her heart and her time in Turkey with the ancient handmaid Sevraine has not her changed utterly. Oh, Gabrielle's not blind, she knows her son will not let this world come to an end. Nor is she—first fledgling of Lestat—unaware of the Voice that whispers to him now.
Killer is in Philadelphia and is only just a century in the blood and one of the youngest outside the "Coven of the Articulate" to have survived Akasha's massacre. Killer makes up part of the Fang Gang, the coven that lies closest to Armand in New York City, less than two hours away. He may only be notable for his proximity to Armand, and his prior connection to Davis, but even he senses the change in Armand as word begins to trickle back to Trinity Gate and the Fang Gang are forced to disband.
Armand knows already he will protect his chosen family at all costs, from any future threats or Burnings. Was there a moment he considered taking them all underground where none would find them should anything resurface? Yes, though he'll never admit it. There was always that concern that the Sacred Core residing in Mekare would corrupt her. Is that what they are starting to see now?
Louis can hear nothing for himself, of course. But Lestat's visits to Trinity Gate begin to grow more and more sporadic and Louis can see Armand grows steadily more tightly wound as the world around them changes again. But still Louis counsels his love and companion to pause. Wait. Be vigilant, but if Khayman and Marius have told them they are already watchful of possible threat, they are likely not the only old ones to do so.
Benji's too much like Armand; he will protect the ones he considers his tribe. He never really understood how the old ones isolate themselves, hasn't really had enough interaction with them to recognise it in any real way. For him, immortals live like they do in Trinity Gate. Benji's radio show begins slowly, like a modern analog of Armand's Théâtre des Vampires, in that no human hearing it will believe, but blood drinkers will find what they need.
I was going to suggest Lestat's probably one of the youngest immortal to actually hear Amel's voice. Then I remembered how strong in the blood Daniel's always been depicted for his age. So yeah he's mad, but that's not helped by the fact Amel started yammering at him from the same point as Lestat. "He rages," said Daniel. "When he's gotten into my head, he's raged."
Cause it's a psychic blast, people. Even Lestat acknowledges, "the Voice is working on a number of fronts".
In any case, all of this is more or less the outline of what I've been thinking of as the QotD 1.5 head canon, something that's being played out in How They Get to Trinity Gate as we get to the pointy end of the fic.

★ Shah Rukh Khan and Salman Khan to celebrate 60th birth year and 30 years of Karan Arjun with Tiger Vs Pathaan!
April 6, 2023
The YRF Spy Universe is getting bigger and bigger by the day. Pathaan, their last movie outing, shattered all records by grossing over Rs 1050 crores at the worldwide box office. The makers are aggressively sharing and confirming details about their upcoming films from the Spy Universe. Yash Raj Films is leaving no stone unturned to ensure that their universe of spy films consists of the biggest names from across the board.
Yash Raj Films Is Aggressively Working On Their Upcoming Spy Films
In the last two days, we have known that War 2 will be directed by Ayan Mukerji and will have Hrithik Roshan and Jr NTR sharing screen space, apart from the fact that the film will start rolling by the end of the year. It is also confirmed that Siddharth Anand will be directing the fusion film of Pathaan and Tiger tentatively titled Tiger Vs Pathaan, where Shah Rukh Khan and Salman Khan will be pitted against eachother. The film shall start rolling early next year. Both the spy films are to release by the end of 2025 and that's quite a big deal if you look at it because no other production house in India can boast of making integrated films at this frequency.
Tiger Vs Pathaan Is Pegged As The Biggest Upcoming Film Of Indian Cinema
Tiger Vs Pathaan is by far the biggest upcoming film of the Indian Film Industry. It includes two of the country's biggest stars, pitted against eachother. Their legacy and history makes it an unmissable movie event. By the time the film is out, there will be two other films from the spy universe that will have released, namely Tiger 3 and War 2, each of which will make the crossover film even grander than it is made to look. Shah Rukh Khan and Salman Khan will be sharing screen space for the first time in a full fledged action role after 30 years. The last time the two fought it out was during Karan Arjun, which was a historic blockbuster too, breaking all initial records and selling over 3 crore movie tickets at the ticket window. Over time, it has also developed a cult status, to the point that the crossover episode of Shah Rukh and Salman in Pathaan also had a Karan Arjun reference.
Shah Rukh Khan and Salman Khan's 60th Birth Year Will Be Graced By The Release Of Tiger Vs Pathaan
Shah Rukh Khan and Salman Khan will be celebrating their 60th birth year with Tiger Vs Pathaan. Whether it's a coincidence or not, to have the two greats come together for a full fledged actioner after 30 years, in their 60th birth year, is for the people to wonder. Whatever be the case, it sure is going to set the box office of fire with never seen before ticketing pressure.
The Indian Film Indsutry Shall Have More Crossovers, Universes And Multistarrers In The Years To Come
A project celebrating the two was long due and it is finally happening. The industry is optimistic again, after an overall dull first quarter with only a couple of films doing worth-while business theatrically. The industry is going the Hollywood way and that means we shall have more multistarrers, more crossovers and more universes in the times to come. It makes sense as well since movie-watching in theatres is expensive and the audiences need a bang for their buck, which they can get more often than not when they see more stars grace the silver screens.

When women are single they get together with other women and enjoy life. When men are single they they make their unhappiness everyone else’s problem.
By Geeta Pandey
BBC News, Delhi
In India, girls have traditionally been raised to be good wives and mothers and the most important life goal for them has been marriage.
But a large number of women are now charting their independent solitary path by choosing to remain single.
On Sunday, I attended a lunch gathering of two dozen women at a Caribbean lounge in south Delhi. The room was filled with excited chatter and laughter.
The women were all members of Status Single - a Facebook community for urban single women in India.
"Let's stop describing ourselves as widows, divorcees or unmarried," Sreemoyee Piu Kundu, author and founder of the community, told the gathering. "Let's just call ourselves proudly single."
The women clapped and cheered.
In a country that's often described as being "obsessed with marriage", a lot of stigma still surrounds singlehood.
In rural India, single women are often seen as a burden by their families - the never married have little agency and thousands of widows are banished to holy towns such as Vrindavan and Varanasi.
Ms Kundu and the women in the Delhi pub I meet are different. Mostly from middle class backgrounds, they include teachers, doctors, lawyers, professionals, entrepreneurs, activists, writers and journalists. Some are separated or divorced or widowed, others never married.
The wealthy urban single women are increasingly being recognised as an economic opportunity - they're wooed by banks, jewellery makers, consumer goods companies and travel agencies.
Single women are also finding representation in popular culture - Bollywood films such as Queen and Piku and web shows such as Four More Shots Please with single female protagonists have done commercially well.
And in October, the Supreme Court ruling that all women, including those not married, had equal rights to abortion was hailed as a recognition of single women's rights by the top court.
But despite these welcome changes, society's attitudes remain rigid and, as Ms Kundu says, being single is not easy even for the affluent and they are judged all the time too.
"I've faced discrimination and humiliation as a single woman. When I was looking to rent an apartment in Mumbai, members of a housing society asked me questions like, Do you drink? Are you sexually active?"
She's met gynaecologists who've been like "nosy neighbours" and a few years ago when her mother put an ad on an elite matrimonial site on her behalf, she met a man who asked her "within the first 15 minutes if I was a virgin"?
"Apparently it's a question single women are routinely asked," she adds.
Indian woman's plan to 'marry herself' sparks debate
The opinionated feminist and her viral wedding ad
But single shaming doesn't make sense in a country which, according to the 2011 Census, is home to 71.4 million single women - a number larger than the entire populations of Britain or France.
This was a 39% increase - from 51.2 million in 2001. The 2021 Census has been delayed due to the Covid-19 pandemic, but Ms Kundu says that by now, "our numbers would have crossed 100 million".
Some of the increase can be explained by the fact that the age of marriage has risen in India - which means a larger number of single women in their late teens or early 20s. The numbers also include a large number of widows, attributed to the fact that women tend to live longer than men.
But, Ms Kundu says, she's seeing "many more women now who are single by choice, not just by circumstances" and it's this "changing face of singlehood" that's important to acknowledge.
"I meet a lot of women who say they are single by choice, they reject the notion of marriage because it's a patriarchal institution that's unjust to women and used to oppress them."
Her focus on single women is rooted in the discrimination her mother - widowed at 29 - faced.
"Growing up, I saw how a woman, unaccompanied by a man, was marginalised in our patriarchal, misogynistic set-up. She was unwelcome at baby showers and at a cousin's wedding, she was told to stay away from the bride since even a widow's shadow is considered inauspicious."
At the age of 44, when her mother fell in love and remarried, she again attracted the "ire of society" - "How dare a widow not be the sad, weeping, asexualised, pleasureless woman that she's supposed to be? How dare she have agency again?"
Her mother's humiliation, she says, had a profound impact on her.
"I grew up desperately wanting to get married. I believed in the fairy tale that marriage will bring acceptance and take away all my darkness."
No country for single women
'You're too smart,' and other jibes about being single
But after two failed relationships which were abusive - physically and emotionally - and coming within a hair's breadth of getting married at 26, Ms Kundu says she realised that the traditional marriage where a woman is meant to be subservient to a man wasn't for her.
Her ideal relationship, she says, is one that's not rooted in culture, religion or community but is based on "respect, accessibility and acknowledgement".
It's a reasonable ask and an idea many single women I met on Sunday agreed with.
But India remains a largely patriarchal society where more than 90% of marriages are arranged by family and women have little say in who they marry - leave alone whether they want to marry at all.
But Bhawana Dahiya, a 44-year-old life coach from Gurugram (Gurgaon) near Delhi who's never been married, points out that things are changing and the growing numbers of single women is a cause for celebration.
"We might be a drop in the ocean, but at least there's a drop now," she says.
"The more examples we have of women being single, the better it is. Traditionally, all conversations were about the husband's career, his plans, the children's school, with little thought given to a woman's choices, but those conversations are now changing.
"We are making a dent in the universe."

2023 Space and Astronomy News: What to Expect
https://sciencespies.com/space/2023-space-and-astronomy-news-what-to-expect/
2023 Space and Astronomy News: What to Expect
As years in space and astronomy go, 2022 is going to be a tough act to follow.
NASA wowed us with cosmic scenes captured by the James Webb Space Telescope. The DART mission slammed an asteroid into a new orbit. Artemis I set humanity on a course back to the moon. China finished building a new space station in orbit. SpaceX launched 61 rockets in 12 months. And the invasion of Ukraine imperiled Russia’s status as a space power.
It’s a lot to measure up to, but 2023 is bound to have some excitement on the launchpad, the lunar surface and in the sky. Once again, you can get updates on your personal digital calendar by signing up for The New York Times’s Space and Astronomy Calendar. Here are some of the major events you can expect. Not all of them have certain dates yet, but Times journalists will provide additional information as it emerges. Learn more at nytimes.com/spacecalendar
New Rockets
NASA got its giant Space Launch System off the ground for the first time in 2022, lighting up the night in Florida with an incredible stream of flame as it carried the Artemis I mission toward the moon. That shifted attention to SpaceX, which is building a next generation rocket, Starship, that is also central to NASA’s crewed Artemis III moon landing attempt.
SpaceX cleared a key environmental review that would allow it to launch an uncrewed orbital test flight from South Texas if it met certain conditions. But the rocket wasn’t ready for flight in 2022. The company has not announced a date for a test this year, but regular ground tests of Starship equipment indicate it is working toward one.
The pathfinder first stage of the Vulcan Centaur, a new rocket by United Launch Alliance that will eventually replace that company’s Atlas V.United Launch Alliance
Numerous other rockets may take flight for the first time in 2023. The most important, Vulcan Centaur by United Launch Alliance, will eventually replace that company’s Atlas V, a vehicle that has been central to American spaceflight for two decades. The Vulcan relies on the BE-4 engine built by Blue Origin, the rocket company founded by Jeff Bezos. The same engine will in turn be used in Blue Origin’s New Glenn rocket, which may have a test flight late this year.
A number of American private companies are expected to test new rockets in 2023, including Relativity and ABL. They could be joined by foreign rocket makers, including Mitsubishi Heavy Industries which could test Japan’s H3 rocket in February, and Arianespace, which is working toward a test flight of Europe’s Ariane 6 rocket.
New Lunar Landings
We’re guaranteed at least one lunar landing attempt in 2023. A Japanese company, Ispace, launched its M1 mission on a SpaceX rocket in December. It’s taking a slow, fuel-efficient route to the moon and is set to arrive in April, when it will try to deploy a rover built by the United Arab Emirates, a robot built by Japan’s space agency, JAXA, as well as other payloads.
There could be as many as five more lunar landing attempts this year.
NASA has hired a pair of private companies to carry payloads to the lunar surface. Both of them, Intuitive Machines of Houston and Astrobotic Technology of Pittsburgh, faced delays in 2022, but may make the trip in the coming months.
They could be joined by three government space programs’ lunar missions. India’s Chandrayaan-3 mission was delayed last year but could be ready in 2023. A Japanese mission, Smart Lander for Investigating Moon, or SLIM, aims to test the country’s lunar landing technologies. Finally, Russia’s Luna-25 mission was postponed from last September, but Roscosmos, the Russian space agency, may try this year.
New Space Telescopes
Scientists in 2019 at work with the European Space Agency’s Euclid spacecraft, which will study energy and dark matter. Its 2022 launch was postponed by the Russian invasion of Ukraine.S. Corvaja/European Space Agency
The Webb telescope wowed space enthusiasts and scientists with its views of the cosmos, but we may get new vantages from a variety of orbital observatories.
The most significant may be Xuntian, a Chinese mission setting off later in the year that will be like a more sophisticated version of the Hubble Space Telescope. The spacecraft will survey the universe at optical and ultraviolet wavelengths in an orbit around Earth close to the country’s Tiangong space station.
A Japanese-led mission, XRISM, pronounced chrism, could launch earlier in the year as well. The mission will use X-ray spectroscopy to study clouds of plasma, which could help to explain the universe’s composition. A European space telescope, Euclid, may also launch on a SpaceX rocket after the Russian invasion of Ukraine resulted in the spacecraft losing its seat on a Russian Soyuz rocket. It will study the universe’s dark energy and dark matter.
New Planetary Missions
A new spacecraft will head toward Jupiter this year, aiming to become the first to ever orbit another planet’s moon. The European Space Agency’s Jupiter Icy Moon Explorer, or JUICE, will launch from an Ariane 5 rocket as early as April 5 to set off to the Jovian system, arriving in 2031. Once it reaches the gas giant, it will move to conduct 35 flybys of three of the giant world’s moons: Callisto, Europa and Ganymede, all of which are believed to have subsurface oceans. In 2034, JUICE will begin orbiting Ganymede, the largest moon in the solar system.
Heading closer to the sun will be Rocket Lab, a small launch company that was founded in New Zealand. It aims to use its Electron rocket to send a mission to Venus. The company’s Photon satellite will try to deploy a small probe, built with Massachusetts Institute of Technology researchers, that will briefly study the planet’s toxic atmosphere. The mission was planned for May, but it is expected to face delays while the company prioritizes missions for its other customers.
A Total Eclipse and a Not-So-Total One
There will be two solar eclipses in 2023.
A total eclipse on April 20 will be more of a Southern Hemisphere event, and the moon will only blot out the sun in remote parts of Australia and Indonesia. (Perhaps not a bad time to be on a boat in parts of the Indian and Pacific Oceans, too.)
But Americans may get a good show on Oct. 14, when North America will be visited by an annular eclipse. Eclipses of this type are sometimes called “ring of fire” eclipses because the moon is too far from Earth to fully block the sun but creates a ring-like effect when it reaches totality. The eclipse’s path runs through parts of Oregon, California, Nevada, Utah, Arizona, New Mexico and Texas before dipping into Central and South America. Where the weather cooperates, it should be a great solar show and a nice lead up for the April 8, 2024 total eclipse that will cross the United States from southwest to northeast.

Challenges by the gender stereotypes: Female perception in Indian culture
In the vast tapestry of Indian society, with its riches in traditions and cultural diversity, women always have had a central role. However, they were also enclosed in tough gender stereotypes that, for centuries, dictated their roles, behaviors, and opportunities. Today, as India strides forward into progress, women from different parts of the country constantly challenge these stereotypes, rewrite narratives, and stand their ground in this modern world.
Indian society, just like most others, was patriarchal. Women had the status of nothing more than custodians and housewives, heavily restricted to the realm of the domestic sphere. Men were held to be breadwinners and decision-makers. These roles were further fortified through cultural and religious practice and the common sense and mores of the time.
Old perceptions have such leftovers as "Girls shouldn't play sports," "Engineering is for boys," or "Women are not natural leaders." Such stereotypes restrict women's choices and deny the society their potential.
Indian women, from the boardroom to Bollywood, from villages in rural India to urban landscapes, break their myriad stereotypes in every possible dimension.
Leadership: Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw of biotech, Indira Nooyi of global business, and political leaders like Mamata Banerjee and Sushma Swaraj prove that leadership has no gender discrimination.
Sports: Women icons like Mary Kom and PV Sindhu have broken the notion that sport is a manly domain and inspired millions of young girls to think big.
Science and Technology: Women scientists like Tessy Thomas, popularly known as the "Missile Woman of India," have opened up avenues for a number of others in areas that otherwise were a man's preserve.
Change: Even rural women are bringing about change. Whether leading panchayats as sarpanchs or running self-help groups as entrepreneurs, they are breaking conventions and changing their worlds.
Role of Education: Education is a very effective tool to break all stereotypes. The "Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao" campaign, which gives importance to girls' education and attacks the biases of society against them, focuses on creating level playing fields for both genders.
Public awareness and media participation in such issues also are substantial for changing societal perception. Films like Dangal and Chak De! India bring out the power of the female fraternity as they have equal opportunities, bringing about a shift in the public opinion.
Such transition towards a more gender equal society involves not just women going out of their stereotypical roles but the whole of society understanding and breaking the shackles. The more women challenge and redefine their roles, the more they empower themselves and lay down a firm ground for a new, more inclusive, and progressive India.

Creative Gifts & Stunning Home Decor for Weddings in India
Beyond the Expected: Unforgettable Gifts for the Newlyweds
A wedding in India is a vibrant celebration of love, tradition, and new beginnings. Gifting the newlyweds thoughtfully shows your love and support, helping them create a beautiful life together. While traditional gifts are always appreciated, consider going beyond the expected with gifts that are both creative and meaningful.
Thoughtful Gifts that Embrace Indian Heritage:
Handcrafted Indian Art: A beautiful hand-painted madhubani painting, a vibrant warli art piece, or a traditional brass or bronze statue will add a touch of Indian heritage to their home. These gifts are not only beautiful, but also support local artisans and preserve cultural traditions.
Personalized Indian Jewelry: A mangalsutra pendant for the bride with their initials or a special inscription or a set of cufflinks for the groom engraved with a meaningful design. These personal touches make for a special and lasting reminder of their union.
Custom-Made Saree or Sherwani: Gift a beautifully handcrafted saree for the bride or a richly embroidered sherwani for the groom, made by a talented local artisan. This gesture not only gives them a stunning outfit for future occasions, but also supports the craft and tradition.
Experiences that Celebrate Indian Culture: A cooking class where they learn to prepare traditional Indian dishes, a trip to an Indian heritage site, or tickets to a classical dance performance. These experiences immerse the couple in the richness of Indian culture and create meaningful memories.
Gifts that Enhance Everyday Life:
Personalized Homeware: A set of matching mugs with their initials, a custom-made photo frame with a picture of their wedding day, or a throw blanket personalized with their names. These gifts add a personal touch to their new home and create a sense of comfort and love.
High-Quality Kitchen Appliances: A sophisticated coffee maker for their morning routine, a hand blender for quick and easy meals, or a set of elegant serving dishes for special occasions. These practical gifts make everyday life more enjoyable.
Experience Gifts for Shared Interests: A weekend getaway to a hill station, a trip to a national park for wildlife enthusiasts, or a wine-tasting experience. These gifts encourage shared exploration and strengthen their bond.
Home Decor that Infuses Love & Tradition:
A newlywed home should be a reflection of the couple's style and shared dreams. Here are some stunning decor ideas that blend Indian traditions with contemporary flair.
Traditional Indian Decor:
Intricate Mandala Art: Mandala designs in various colors and materials can be incorporated into rugs, cushions, wall art, or even as decorative elements on furniture. They bring a touch of spirituality and cultural richness to the home.
Diya Illumination: Place rows of diya (oil lamps) around the home to create a warm, inviting glow during festivities or even on ordinary evenings. The traditional Indian symbolism of diya brings a sense of good luck and prosperity.
Hand-woven Textiles: Vibrant silk, velvet, and brocade fabrics in traditional colors can be used for drapes, cushions, table runners, or as wall art. These textiles add a touch of richness and elegance.
Brass or Bronze Statues: Traditional Indian deities or animal figurines made of brass or bronze are beautiful decorative pieces that reflect Indian art and heritage.
Contemporary Decor:
Global Influences: Combine traditional Indian elements with contemporary design styles from around the world to create a fusion of cultural influences.
Vibrant Color Palettes: Use a combination of bold colors, metallic accents, and natural tones to create a vibrant and dynamic space.
Open Concept: Optimize space with open floor plans, minimalistic furniture, and strategic use of mirrors to create a sense of airiness.
Beyond the Decor: Creating a Truly Special Home
The most important element in a new home is the love and joy that the couple brings to it. Encourage them to fill their home with memories, experiences, and personal touches that make it uniquely their own.
Consider these additional touches to enhance their new home:
Family Photos: A gallery wall of their wedding pictures, snapshots of their life together, or pictures of their extended family.
Travel Souvenirs: Mementos from trips they have taken together, or gifts from loved ones. These create a sense of adventure and shared experiences.
Books and Music: Their favorite books, a collection of music they both love, or even a small music system.
Plants and Flowers: Fresh flowers and plants bring life and freshness to a space. They can be a beautiful addition to any room.
Remember, the most important gift you can give is the gift of love and support. Help the newlyweds create a home that reflects their unique style, embraces their shared dreams, and celebrates their love story.
