Though pretty short-lived, the Swedish punk band Ebba Grön remains one of, if not the, most iconic punk bands in Swedish music history. Formed in 1978 they released three albums before officially disbanding in 1983. Most of the members went on to form the music group Imperiet, which was active until 1988. Joakim Thåström was singer and front man of both groups.

The hit Staten och kapitalet (The state and the capital) is actually a cover of the progg band Blå Tågets song Den ena handen vet vad den andra gör (One hand knows what the other hand does). Ebba Gröns version from 1980, however, is now more well known than the original.

The lyrics, written by Blå Tåget's Leif Nylén, "expresses an anti-capitalist sentiment about how the state (staten) and the capitalist owned corporations (kapitalet) control and enslave the working classes." (x). Metallica performed a cover of the song at a concert at Ullevi, Göteborg, in 2019. Here is a video of Ebba Grön performing live at music festival Roskilde in 2000. Thåström breaks two guitars during the performance.

Metallica at Ullevi in Gothenburg, with their own cover of Ebba Grön’s cover of Blå Tåget’s “Den ena handen vet vad den andra gör” (One hand knows what the other is doing), better known as “Staten och kapitalet” (”The state and the capital” = government and capitalism).

This is an anti capitalist punk classic in Sweden, and the lyrics of the chorus can be translated to:

I am woefully ignorant of Swedish punk history, and was interested in the pointer. He’s never been that into punk, but they were apparently hard to miss around Stockholm when he was growing up.

Ebba Grön's version is superior in one way: they illustrate the whip sound.

Also, damn, I get nostalgic for a society with a state based safety net, even when it enriched the rich. Because it’s still so much better than a society where the capitalists rob us and throw us to the winds.
