9. Did you get into any new genres?
American history nonfiction was the big one. With a special focus on the 1840s through the 1880s. Never thought I'd be so excited about a book/historical artifact covering the election and assassination of President James Garfield.
11. What was your favorite book that has been out for a while, but you just now read?
This is a tougher question to answer when you read mostly old books. I'll interpret this as "favorite book you only read now that most people read at a younger age" and I'll give this title to Johnny Tremain by Esther Forbes. I was shocked by just how good the writing was.
12. Any books that disappointed you?
I did not love "Mr. Harrison's Confessions" by Elizabeth Gaskell anywhere near as much as I wanted to. The plot was very thin and not all that amusing.
17. Did any books surprise you with how good they were?
I was surprised by how much I liked Little Lord Fauntleroy, given the image I had of it as "sickly sweet Victorian children's story". I was shocked by how deeply invested I was in the characters of The Law and the Lady (and shocked that a Wilkie Collins book wasn't too wordy for me to read in print!) I was also shocked by how much I loved Daisy Miller and Washington Square by Henry James, since those are the type of sad, pretentious, literary stories I usually hate.

Reread Father Tood AU, and it gave me so much peace. It’s interesting how something done out of love and reverence for God can bring peace. I always think about the quote by Simone Weil who said something like “Unmixed attention is prayer,” and it has me thinking how even the “silly” things can be done to glorify God. It’s really apparent that that’s what you’ve done, and I’m just reaching out because it was important to me, and I wanted to share it with you. Thanks! 🩷
I'm glad it brought you peace! And yeah, there was a point when I was writing the one about Jason's ordination that I realized it was more of a spiritual meditation on the priesthood than a fan fiction. All of our creative efforts are at their best when ordered towards the Creator.
Thank you for the lovely message!

Just wanted you to know that I read the first book of The Naturals series because you were so passionate about it, and WOW! I enjoyed it a lot. I already have the second book on hold. The first book had me gasping at the end, I didn’t expect that at all!
Yes!!! It’s so good isn’t it!!!
I love the lead up and foreshadowing because when you reread parts it all makes sense, but you never see it coming the first time! The series just gets better to me.

You’re moving back to CA? Congrats! (if it is a congrats thing. If not then I’m sure it will be lovely anyhow!)
It IS a congrats because I got a job down in Orange County, which I'm very excited about, but it's complicated by the fact that I just started dating a boy up here...God loves the whole timing thing, doesn't He?

She at least never pretended her novels were moralistic, I think she described them as being a good read for when you have the flu or are trapped in a bomb shelter. I've never understood comparing them to Austen (though people insist upon it), they are way closer to P.G. Wodehouse imo, just fun romps.
I do think in a weird way her novels have an element of social commentary in them, but more a rose-tinted projection of Edwardian mores (ie Heyer's own childhood) onto the Georgian and Regency periods. I read her most recent biography and one does get the sense that she was just high enough in the social hierarchy (daughter of an academic on the edge of the gentry class) to really love being a total snob.
Ironically, I do think her novels have more to say about human nature/the sorts of relationships that do and don't work than all the crappy subpar things that came after in the Regency Romance genre she created.
I only started reading Heyer after college, but I have had the thought, "would I let my adolescent child read her books?" because lol yeah her books basically take place in a universe where arbitrary codes of "honor" are more important than...like, actual morality........you kind of just have to accept the conceit because she usually gives her heroes some kind of actual quality of character, but the flippancy with which certain issues are addressed can occasionally be a jarring MISS.
I don’t think Heyer ever intended her books to be moral, not like Jane Austen did. Jane Austen was providing social commentary, but Heyer was not — also, if she was, her society is not Georgian/Regency society, so what would be the point on providing social commentary on the past? (Which plenty of historical fiction writers do, which I think is a mistake.) I think she avoids it neatly, but still manages to present a lot of historical realities (mixed in with plenty of unrealities).
I think Heyer is sort of her own category which no one else can manage, because she does respect the history and does the research to an amazing extent, but still acknowledges that it’s not deep literature. What’s that one quote of hers, that she ought to be shot for what she writes? 😂 So hard on herself, but I think she’s well aware that she’s not writing novels of merit, but they’re still enjoyable to read.
As for A Civil Contract, I’m enjoying it and I’ve already taken a couple of swan dives into wikipedia to learn more about the era (Princess Charlotte, for one!)

The house was empty when he got home.
Azula fell back with Ozai as Ursa and Zuko led the way to Ember Island Theater.
“I told her everything,” Grayson said.
“I don’t understand,” Damian says bluntly, looking at the crucifix in Jason’s hands.
Ozai was at the bow of the ship as it sailed into the harbor at the Capital City.
Jason was still awake when Bruce got home, well past three in the morning.
The palace was far behind him when Ozai finally slowed.
“What’s on your mind, Fire Lord?”
“Yes, yes,” Orion interrupted Mrs. Nott’s tirade, impatiently. “I quite understand, thank you.”
“It’s like that movie, huh, Mr. Wayne,” Tim panted, bent over, shoulders crowding his ears.

the goonies, drugstore cowboy
the goonies: what was the last thing to make you laugh?
The Corner Gas episode I'm watching. Hank is brainstorming ways to get signatures on a petition to stop a call center from coming to town, and imagines shooting a guy with a tranquilizer dart, laying the petition on the sidewalk beside him, putting a pen in his hand, and signing the petition for him.
drugstore cowboy: which historical figure most spikes your interest?
Ever since reading Nicholas and Alexandra, I've had a lingering interest in Czar Nicholas II. Massie is too kind to him, I suspect, but he makes him sound like a decent guy trying his best in a really horrible system.
In my current presidential history study, I unexpectedly became fascinated with Zachary Taylor (mostly because of how shocking it was I'd never heard anything about him before). I'm also getting interested in the long, complicated political career of William Seward (and liking his wife, Frances, who understood very early on that the Civil War would be a long conflict about slavery, and took her husband to task for trying to make too many concessions to keep slave states in the Union). In a different direction, my latest history infodump (thanks for listening, Dad) was about General George McClellan, who has gained a place on my list of Historical Figures Who Make Me Want To Find A Time Machine So I Can Punch Them In The Face.

Currently Reading: Ghost of Tsushima Artbook (Digital Edition)
Favorite Color: Different shades of green, browns, mustard yellow, and other jewel tones.
Last Song: I See Fire - Boyce Avenue Cover
Last Movie: A documentary on some Chinese tomb I think? I don't remember a lot about it.
Sweet/Savory/Spicy: Savory, spicy, sweet. In that order, but a balanced mix is the best.
Currently working on:
I had the thought of doing a digital environment painting and having it printed to hang on my wall, but the size I need to work in to get the correct size print I want made my PC protest. Can't imagine working with the mixer brush AND adding extra layers, so I noped out! Yikes.
Oh well! Now adding 64GB RAM upgrade for my laptop to my wishlist this year. In the meantime, I am doing rough sketches—whether this ends up being hung on my wall or not sometime this year or just added to my portfolio—guess we'll see! (ง •_•)ง
