I admit it. I'd made some mistakes. Okay, some big mistakes. Loads of them. But you can't hide in your room forever feeling sorry for yourself. It's not practical. At some point you've got to get back out there, face up to things, and confront your demons.

Ever since I can remember, I'd wanted to be clever. Some people are born clever, same way some people are born beautiful. I'm not one of those people. I'm going to have to work at it, put in the effort, and if I mess it up, I'll learn from it. Besides, sometimes it's not about knowing the right answer. Sometimes it's about asking the right questions.

Steven Fraser’s Starter for 10

Steven Fraser is an Edinburgh based writer, animator and theatre-maker. Experimenting in different mediums he creates original and challenging stories with authentic and engaging characters, telling personal stories that captivate the audience with exciting visuals.

Starter for 10, offers aspiring theatre-makers a funded residency of £2,500 to help them develop their skills, networks, or explore a new idea for a piece of theatre.

Steven shares how he spent his time at Rockvilla, the National Theatre of Scotland’s new creation centre.

“I have always wanted to use puppetry in my work. I create performance installations that are designed for adults who live with autism, but they can be experienced by anyone. The big idea is to develop an interactive installation that involves a participant interacting with 5 different puppets in a performance space. There will be no puppeteers or performers in the space. The audience member will be able to interact with the puppets using ropes and pulleys that they can operate by themselves. I use text in my work and each of the puppets will have a letter to give to the participant. The letters will present a story that the audience member can read in the installation space and then take home after the performance concludes. The show has the working title of Letters We Leave Behind. 

During my time at Rockvilla I created a puppet and devised the interactions this puppet will have with the audience member. Creating the puppet was fun and hard work. I collaborated with the puppet maker Gavin Glover who was full of ideas and really enthusiastic for the project. He helped me understand what I needed to do to bring the character to life.

The interactions the puppet has with the participant are very important and Gavin helped me realise this. We spent the first day gathering materials and thinking about movement and how to make a sturdy puppet that will not break. The puppet we created was made up of foam, wood, tape, rope, string, plastic and an old t-shirt that was augmented with lace and silk material. Time was spent setting up the puppet with ropes and pulleys and making it move. I also set up a little stage for the puppet which had props and objects to reflect their personality. I ended up taking lots of photographs and videos as I was very pleased with what we achieved in such a short time frame.

Rockvilla has a very creative and exciting atmosphere around it. I found it very inspiring developing my project there. Prior to my residency the workshop created a small stage where I could set up the puppet. It was a nice feeling knowing that people were taking time and interest in my work.

Also working next to the canal was a pleasant experience. It is a great location to relax and take some time to think away from the studio and workshop spaces. I very much enjoyed my residency.

Since my time at Rockvilla my ideas have changed. Getting the chance to make a puppet and see how the participant will interact with it has altered my approach to creating further puppets. I have several sketchbooks with story ideas, illustrations and designs on how I want everything to look. I have gone back and added loads more sketches and redesigned the puppets to consider how the participants will interact with these puppets. After my residency the story has also changed. The idea is that each puppet holds a letter that they give to the participant. The content of the letters will now be more personal and reflect the intimacy of the project.

The next stage for my project is to create another four puppets and finalise what will be written in the letters. Outside of my time at Rockvilla I have been working with the writer Lesley Hart. She has been a big help in assisting me in writing the letters. I still have lots to do, but I am looking forward to getting the project complete and seeing people interact with it.”
