It was late, later than Alaric had thought he would be home.  He’d told her he’d be home around nine, but it was pushing eleven.  He knew she was used to this by now, but it didn’t help the guilt he felt.  What did help slightly that was his daughter adored her and he knew she was a good kid.  He was aware that most parents thought their kids were great, but he was pretty sure his was actually great.  Daniva was the sweetest little girl who stole hearts everywhere she went.

That being said, he also hated the nights that he wasn’t around to put her to bed, to read her stories.  Bridget, Daniva’s mother, had been a nightmare all day, which hadn’t helped since his caseload was already more than usual while one of his associates was out.  He could have handed more caseloads to some of the other lawyers, Alaric was a partner, but he tended to be more hands on for those under him.  By the time he walked into the door, he was tired and emotionally drained...sadly most of that wasn’t for his case load but from Bridget.  She always had a way of making him feel like the worst father in the universe, He barley managed to hold his tongue, though he wanted to point out she rarely saw their daughter and Daniva always begged to stay with him, not her mother.

Still, the guilt ate away at him as he placed his briefcase on the counter in the kitchen and debated whether he had the energy for a beer or if straight to bed was better.  Hearing footsteps, he cursed softly, forgetting about her.  “I’m incredibly sorry.”  He murmured, “You’ll be paid extra for this and the guest room is yours if you want it.”  His gaze met hers and not for the first time did he have to remind himself she was too young for him, that she was paid to watch his daughter.

Truthfully, Anthony hoped he wouldn't run into Liliana at the University, but he had been curious since he found out that she worked there. He wasn't ready to face her, still trying to get his feet underneath him as he came to a new town to find the woman he was still legally married to. So, he wandered around the campus, the winter breeze causing him to hunker between his shoulders as he wrapped his coat around him. Anthony had not a clue where he was going or what his intention even was, but as he saw a building, he headed toward it, opening up the door. As he did, he spotted another coming along, leaving Anthony to hold it open for the man rather than entering himself.

OPEN TO: any ( fem 25+ if romantic for a lil poly ship ) PLOT: about a year and a half ago there was some sort of apocalyptic/world ending type event and they've taken refuge on an island and built a little life there MUSE(s): aiyla ersoy, 30 & alaric mason, 45

alaric had stumbled upon it all by chance ⸻ the little island and the untouched handful of cabins that resided there. he’d been on his own for a handful of months, building it up as a long term residence when he'd stumbled into aiyla while on a search for supplies. how he'd ended up inviting her back to his little island was almost as much as a mystery as how their third companion had joined them ( though that heart attack he still attributed to aiyla, who'd dragged them back and scared the absolute hell out of him when he'd spotted the unfamiliar face ). but they were going on nearly six months now that their little trio had created a comfortable little life together.

what remained of winter were finally giving way to the creepings of spring, and with that came the decision to take a lengthier trip to the mainland. it was dangerous, but the man knew there were certain supplies they wouldn’t be able to fish, farm or make themselves. it had been almost two weeks since he'd been back to what he considered home and as the island and its dock grew closer, the man couldn’t help but sigh in relief.

aiyla understood the necessity behind the need to leave ( to search for or trade for supplies they might not be able to otherwise acquire themselves ) but she never enjoyed when their little trio separated. without a means to properly communicate, it was a new test of patience in hoping whoever left would come back safe. they tried to plan on how long one or another would be gone ⸻ but there were never any guarantees. she'd learned it was better to just keep herself busy even as the anticipated arrival drew closer ( better than watching the horizon and worrying if an extra day or two passed without the others return ).

with dinner cooking on the wood stove and night steadily starting to fall, aiyla was sprawled out on the couch, book in hand when the door opened. perking up at the sight of alaric, she all but tossed the book aside. "you're home early! and just in time for dinner too."

Alaric did his best not to chuckle when he realized why the woman next door was calling him.  “No, no, I’m not doing anything.  I’ll check it out and let you know if I see anything.”  She apparently heard something in the back yard and had called to ask him if he could check it out.  He paused to check in on his sleeping daughter before slipping on a pair of shoes and heading out the door.

Using the flashlight on his phone, he glanced around carefully, keeping an ear out for anything that sounded out of the ordinary.  It didn’t take him long to notice the raccoon, hurrying away from her back porch.  Grinning he jogged up the steps and knocked lightly on the back door.  “You’re in the clear, it was just a raccoon.”
