yippee i'm talking about goggle v ep36 again
so the episode starts by setting up the mozoo of the week - an assassin with his sights set on our boy akama
Tumblr media
the team has the general gist of trouble being afoot but largely they know very little about the situation at hand and this is of course worrying for our usually on the ball / ahead of the curve heroes
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
akama and kuroda are pretty similar in a lot of ways but their biggest difference is in how they handle danger. kuroda stops, plans, and then executes. he learns and assesses all the information he can and by the time he's in action he's already several steps ahead.
AKAMA on the other hand, while being clever and quick, is much more of a doer. his strength lies more in being able to react quickly and think on his feet. and up until now, this has worked out pretty well for him. he's cocky and he's confident and he's lulled himself into a false sense of security.
in this scene kuroda is very much in his STOP phase and you can feel his apprehension because he knows akama does not HAVE a stop phase
Tumblr media
this all of course immediately backfires and ya boy gets his shit kicked in. even after being shot he's got this bravado about him (i love him very much)
Tumblr media
side note: earlier in the season they show us the difference between kuroda's confidence with his suit available vs his apprehension without his suit available - and i dont think its a stretch to assume that by this point in the season, the whole team feels pretty confident in their equipment / unstoppable while in their suits
Tumblr media Tumblr media
akama gets shot once out of suit, and so naturally the first thing he does is transform - only to quickly learn he is still very much in danger. good thing he has a team to save his ass -
Tumblr media Tumblr media
see NORMALLY when the team swoops for the upset, its with their goggle sabers (the shared sidearm) BUT HERE, the mozoo is smacked with kuroda's signature clubs - because kuroda got here first. the team of course isnt very far behind but kuroda got there first and immediately put himself between akama and the mozoo.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
once we're back at the base akama's pride is in tatters and immediately he is goaded into making another bad call. his team tries to comfort him but he 1. is too mad and kinda delirious to see reason and 2. doesnt really believe what they're saying anyway. as far as he's concerned this is very much his fault.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
again, akama does NOT have a stop phase and this is currently REALLY pissing kuroda off - so he punches him square in the guts (not in the face alas)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
with akamas hot head out of the way kuroda and the team can start working out their next steps. again he (a lil more metaphorically this time) puts himself between akama and the mozoo - giving the team time to gather information, time to plan
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
now armed with more information akama can finally swoop in and have his cool guy moment (cannot have the children thinking that red isn't the coolest guy on the team lets be real here)
Tumblr media
we then get a cowboy fight scene but i am AT THE PICTURE LIMIT LMAO just know that we beat the mozoo and then we beat the mozoo again but this time in our robot.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
once again - kuroda gets to akama first. AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA this scene makes me unwell. i am going to leave it at that. thanks for reading 👋👋

where the lord does not look
todoroki shoto/female!traitor!reader
In which Todoroki Shoto blackmails a classmate and pays the price.
warnings: blackmail, violence, questionable kiss
Tumblr media
It felt wrong. It always did.
YN L/N watched Aizawa Shouta talk about the importance of pack thinking, of teamwork, of loyalty, and it felt cruel. The sun was shining through the door window, Sero and Denki were passing notes about something, and out of the corner of her eye, she saw Ochako casually glancing at Midoriya. There was the smell of spring in the air and the taste of hope on the tip of everyone’s tongues.
And YN wanted to scream at the top of her lungs.
She didn’t know how she got involved with the League of Villains in the first place. Her quirk, while powerful, wasn’t necessarily villainous. She was never teased, never abused for anything in her life except for insignificant bullies. She had no obstacle or hindrance. She just remembered asking for power to a man with no face.
And here she was. Helping plot the downfall of the pillar of the hero youth.
She knew it would crush so many. Midoriya was the first to come to mind, with how hard he worked to enter if the rumours were true. But everyone else who decided to throw their lives on the line for a job that fatal at worst and exhausting at best would be forced to relocate, reconsider.
YN held her head up a little bit higher when she realised that she was slouching. The last thing she needed was for anyone to ask her if something was wrong. She knew that she would burst like an overfilled dam.
The bell rang and YN almost shakily rose to her feet. Her bag was in her hand when Mina and Tooru grabbed her arms on either side, tugging her away.
“Hey, hey, hey!” Mina yapped, poking a finger into YN’s cheek. “What’s got you so upset?”
YN felt panic rise in her chest but masked it with a concerned look. “What are you talking about?”
“You were all wimpy during class. What’s up with that?” Tooru chirped.
“I was thinking.” YN raised an eyebrow. “That’s you’re supposed to do in class. Though, I suppose you wouldn’t know that.”
“Hey!” Mina let a mock frown grace her cheeks. “That’s mean!”
“It’s true.” YN smirked, letting the panic start to flow away.
“Well, what were you thinking about?” Tooru began, a teasing tone on her voice. “Was it...Todoroki?”
YN jumped, nearly stopping the two in their tracks. “What? That’s-!”
“Ha! We were right!” Mina howled, puffing up her chest and thumping her fist against it. “Ah, young love~!”
“Mina, we’re the same age-”
“Doesn’t matter! So, where are you gonna confess?” Tooru pitched in.
They had a point, of course. YN had a crush (albeit a small one) on Todoroki Shoto. It was bred out of unspoken respect; he had every right to be a villain if what YN had heard was right. He had a terrifyingly powerful quirk, a terrible childhood, and little social skills. And yet, he did the one thing that YN could not. He prevailed and walked on the path of light.
YN sighed. “I’m not going to. I don’t stand a chance.”
“No way! He was staring at you all throughout class today!” Tooru giggled. “He couldn’t look away.”
“What?” YN stared wide-eyed at the space where she guessed Tooru was at. “Bullshit.”
“Nope! I even got a pic!” She pulled out her phone (with a cute Mount Lady charm on it) and showed a picture of Todoroki that was clearly taken underneath her desk. He indeed was staring at YN’s back, but it was more the look of glaring daggers than anything.
“That...doesn’t look positive.” YN murmured.
“He’s emotionally constipated! He’s probably head over heels!” Mina said, entering the cafeteria.
“Uh-huh…” YN was about to break off when she felt a tap on her shoulder. All three girls turned only to see the young man they had just been talking about.
“T-Todoroki!” YN yelped, literally jumping when she saw him standing there. He looked neutral, watching her intently.
“May I have a word with you, LN? There is something I’d like to discuss.”
Both Mina and Tooru squealed as YN nodded, clasping hands and jumping. Though they didn’t say anything otherwise, the message was obvious.
YN followed Todoroki through a side hall, keeping a bit of distance between herself and the student. Though she hated to admit it, she felt hope grow. All the talk of him liking her back was getting to her, and she just hoped that Mina and Tooru were right.
He stopped just outside, where no one was around, and YN nearly ran into his back. She stumbled as he turned.
“I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to-”
“I’ve been watching you.”
YN stopped talking, blinking up at him with wide eyes and a blush rising on her cheeks. “Pardon?”
“You take a lot of calls, late at night. And you send letters.”
YN froze. “I’m sorry?”
“One of the letters fell out, and I planned on putting it back in the mailbox for you. But there was no address on it.” Todoroki looked deathly serious like he would try to kill YN if she tried to move. His bangs made his face shadowed, and it was enough to make YN’s heart stop.
She felt bile and panic rising. The letters were shipped to the League, through someone they had in the post office. And the calls were given to Toga, who would change into someone else every time so that if anyone heard, there would be no vocal leads.
“During the USJ attack, you and I were placed in the same division. While, yes, the villains attacked you, they put in noticeably less effort, and you never made any attempt to actually hurt them. With your quirk, you could have easily put them all to sleep. But you made it hard.”
YN started hyperventilating, eyes flicking left and right in hopes of looking for an escape without having to hurt Todoroki. “What are you trying to say?”
“You’re the traitor.” Todoroki put it bluntly, and yet, YN felt as though he hadn’t said nearly enough. It felt like the world froze, with YN’s eyes glazing over in terror. Her breathing was laboured and she even felt a little faint. Her world was collapsing, she wasn’t ready to go to jail, she was terrified. There was a white-hot rushing in her veins, and she fell to her knees.
“I won’t sell you out.” Todoroki looked down at her like one would look at roadkill-intrigued, but disgusted. “For a price.”
YN looked up, tears ruining her vision. “What is it? I’ll do it.”
“I have favours. First, I don’t really feel like doing this week’s homework. I already know of all it.” He paused, looking neutrally cruel. “Actually, this entire semester. I don’t feel like doing it. Understand?”
YN mutely nodded.
“Good. If any one of the assignments fails, then it’s over.”
Todoroki left, purposing hitting her shoulder with his knee so she would fall over. She couldn’t get up, nor did she even move, until Mina and Tooru came rushing out.
“Oh my god!” Mina knelt, grabbing YN’s face with care. “Are you alright?”
“We saw Todoroki leave, and he didn’t look...happy…” Tooru started but trailed off when a fresh wave of tears overcame YN. “Oh, no...sweetie…”
All three girls stayed huddled together, the two cooing at YN until Mina paused.
“So...did you get...you know…?”
“Rejected?” Tooru finished. YN sniffled loudly, before nodding. After all, there was no way in hell that Todoroki would love someone like her, now.
“Oh my god...I am so sorry…” Mina wrapped YN in a hug, while Tooru was fuming.
“What a jackass! He should’ve accepted you! He has no taste!” She stood up, crossing her sleeves. “I’m gonna have a talk with him!”
“Tooru!” Mina called out. “Don’t. Not right now.”
Tooru relaxed, watching YN break down even more. “...You’re right. Sorry.”
“And we’re sorry...for telling you that…” Mina fell silent. “We’re sorry.”
“It’s not-” YN managed to get out, trying to talk past her sore throat and sobs. “It’s not your fault.”
And there they stayed, even with Midnight offering condolences for a rejection that never happened and offering the rest of the day off.
The sun set low, and Mina and Tooru had to leave as the stars came out. The cold came creeping up YN’s arms, and yet, she stayed.
And in the distance, a young man watched.
Tumblr media
YN paced the length of her dorm, holding the phone to her ear.
“Himi...Himi, please, it’s me.”
“Oh? YN-chan? What’s wrong?” The voice was initially a deep baritone, a man’s voice, but it dripped into a sweet honey tone, that of a schoolgirl’s. “Were you crying?”
“Himi, they know. Someone knows. They...he isn’t telling right now, but…”
“What?!” She heard from the other side. “Someone knows?!”
There was more shouting from past the phone, some from Shigaraki, others from Twice. They were talking before Toga went back on the phone.
“How long can you shut him up? Who is it?”
“T-Todoroki Shoto. He...he’s blackmailing me into doing stuff for him in exchange for him keeping quiet.”
“Stuff?” Toga yelped. “What stuff is making you do? It’s nothing creepy, right?”
“Creepy?” YN heard Twice yell. “We can’t even let him touch her! If he tries anything then-”
“Oh, would you shut up?” Shigaraki sounded strained. “She slipped up. She has to pay.”
“The little bitch just exposed the whole operation! Fucking kill her!” Twice hissed. “She needs to be pulled out and saved!”
“YN-chan, what stuff is he making you do? It’s not talkin’ about us, right?” Toga said. She sounded worried, but coming from her, it wasn’t comforting.
“No...homework is what he’s starting off with, but I have a feeling he’ll go further. He won’t be satisfied. I know that I’ve already exposed the breach, so if there’s any way to hurry up the operation…” YN glanced at her door when she saw a shadow pass by, and lowered her voice to a whisper.
“Ughhh. This is trying to do a speedrun! This is unacceptable!”
“Shigaraki, it is only a matter of time…” Kurogiri said. “It is almost complete.”
“What, we rush the whole thing and fuck it up? No, no, no, no, no…”
“YN! We’ll come and get you and we can play a game together!” Twice yelled. “I hope you fucking rot, you slimy-!”
“How did they find out?” Kurogiri’s voice came clearly over the phone. YN took a deep breath.
“He said that one of the letters...the postman dropped it and saw there was no address. He…” YN stopped. She was already lying to save her own skin on both ends, so what was another lie in the wall that of half-truths and deceit that would save her?  “He opened it and read some before accidentally burning it in anger.”
Kurogiri sighed. “Then I suppose it couldn’t be helped on your end.”
“Fucking useless piece of shit!” Shirgiraki bit. “I knew he’d fuck up!”
“Shigaraki, please.” Kurogiri’s voice had turned away from the phone before turning back. “We will try to speed up the operation. Can you give us two weeks?”
“I’ll try.” YN whispered. “Thank you.”
“Stay safe. Do not disappoint us.”
“Love ya’, YN-chan! Make sure to come back to us!” Toga yelled, probably from over Kurogiri’s shoulder before the line went dead. YN let out a shaky sigh before deleting the call log and moving to her desk. Both her homework and Todoroki’s was out, and that meant that she had to forge his writing in order to make it work.
She was writing away, late into the night, taking no pause out of fear that Todoroki would find some flaw and alert the whole school. She worked and she worked until the clock hit two A.M. She looked up, feeling almost woozy when there was a knock at the door. YN jumped in her seat before walking over and answering it.
On the other side was a wide-awake Todoroki, who glared at her through the crack in the door.
“The homework. Hand it over, while everyone else is asleep.”
YN nodded, sulking over and grabbing the sheets of work. He snatched them out of her hands, reading it over and checking that it was all done.
“Alright. Today, I want you to be the one to tell my father that I will not be seeing him this week, but instead doing such things as hanging out with friends and attending parties.”
“But...but how do I contact your father?” YN felt her head pound. Todoroki met her eyes with a raised eyebrow.
“Figure it out.”
He turned and left, and YN gave a heaping sigh. She turned to her bed, her own homework only half-finished. She was exhausted, rightfully so, and collapsed into the pillows. Regret pooled in her gut. Some part of her still loved Todoroki, but it was quickly dying.
It was dying, along with the rest of her.
Tumblr media
The next five days were hellish.
She supposed the second day, where she had to approach Endeavour, was kind. While he was upset about his son not even bothering to talk to him, he didn’t lash out onto YN, nor send a message back. It could’ve gone much worse, she was well aware. The next day she was forced to make his meals, though it wasn’t that hard. And after, she was to do his laundry. All were relatively easy deeds.
But the day after that Todoroki ordered her to clean his room. And when she entered, it was so torn apart that she was sure he ripped everything out of the drawers on purpose. And the day after, she was told to take up all of his chores for the dorm, confusing both Sato and Midoriya.
Mina and Tooru took notice of YN’s behaviour but didn’t ask. Mina was still beating herself up for hyping up YN, and Tooru was still furious at Todoroki’s supposed rejection.
And for YN’s feelings for Todoroki, they were absolutely and completely quashed.
She had no idea he could be as heartless as he was acting. Anything positive that she had for him was gone, replaced with deep scorn.
And the only lifeline she had was calling the League every night. Toga, while crazy, did provide some comfort, with the promise of doing each other’s nails and hair when the attack arrived and YN was taken to the home base. The regret and fear she had of being a villain before was slowly disappearing with every night that she fell asleep to the sound of Toga and Twice babbling about video games.
On the sixth night, YN called to Toga specifically, venting left and right about the things that Todoroki was making her do.
“And then, he told me that I had missed a spot, and when I went to look, he went and picked up a tissue that definitely wasn’t there before!” YN hissed into the phone receiver.
“No way!” Toga barked. “What an asshole!”
“I know, right? He just wants to make my life hell. I can’t wait for you guys to get here.”
“Ugh! Same! Me ‘n’ Twice have been stocking up on the goods so that way when you get here, we can have loads of fun!” Toga laughed loudly, and YN heard Twice laughing, too. “We’re getting excited! It’s only a week away!”
“Yeah,” YN murmured, a soft smile on her face. “Thanks. I’m gonna go and get some sleep. You guys make sure to rest up, too.”
“Maybe~! Love ya’!” Toga hung up and YN felt the silence of the night draw in. She felt oddly content, and she let out a soft sigh.
There was a feeling of content that she hadn’t felt in days. With all the work that Todoroki had piled on and the stress of keeping it all under wraps, she could feel her eyebags during the day and wish for the sweet release of sleep during the night.
YN rested her arm on her forehead, letting the darkness consume her eyes and try to soothe the headache that was coming on from even thinking about Todoroki.
“Yikes,” She sighed, rubbing her temple with her spare hand. “I’m screwed.”
Tumblr media
Meanwhile, Todoroki was no better off.
While he had no headache, he was staring at his ceiling with the covers of his bed pulled up to his chest. His arms were folded, but his eyes were narrowed in thought.
Before he had learned about YN being the traitor, he hadn’t thought much of her. She seemed like a meek girl, with a terrifyingly powerful PSI quirk. She stuck to her friends and stayed in her lane.
‘The perfect candidate for traitor,’ Todoroki thought. As far as he knew, she had no terrible history or actual motivations to become a villain. So when he found the letter and put and two and two together, he was shocked. He wanted her to vehemently deny it, to say that it was maybe a love letter or a secret note to somebody else.
But all she did was cry, and Todoroki had his answer.
He didn’t know why he chose to blackmail her, of all things. He should’ve turned her in, as a hero would have. But he didn’t. And at first, he didn’t know why he wanted to spare her so. Was in how miserable she looked while she was crying? Was it how she didn’t even look angry, but just scared? He didn’t have an answer.
Until he made her clean his room.
To be honest, he tore it apart just to see what her reaction was. He wasn’t a messy person but he wanted to make it tough for her. So, periodically throughout her cleaning, he would check up on her. At first, it was to make sure she didn’t throw away anything important, but once he realised that she was doing something so domestic, it made him feel warm on both sides. She had a broom and trash bags, and a bandanna to hold back her hair. She worked ferociously, determined to finish quickly. The hair came loose at times, and sweat grew over her as she lost herself in the cleaning and her thoughts.
He realised that it was exactly what she would look like if she was a housewife.
He realised that the entire time, he had her doing things a lover would do-calling the parents, helping with work, cleaning, cooking. None of them were dangerous, and she had them all done in three hours at most. And as Todoroki laid there, he started thinking less on the favours than it was YN herself.
She was a girl. That was the first thing that came to Todoroki’s mind. Even though no one was around, he nodded with confirmation. It was a safe thought. It was a fact.
She trained well, sometimes even out of school time. He had come across her in more than one situation where she would be using her quirk to make Bakugou levitate, with him howling the entire time. Her eyes would glow too, like changing lights in a pool. Todoroki always thought it was pretty.
That, too, was a fact. Her eyes were pretty.
Todoroki’s eyes snapped open. Yes, it was a fact, but it was not a safe thought. He imagined shoving it into a box and kicking it far away, into the depths of his mind.
He closed his eyes again, sighing.
She was strong. That was a safe thought.
She had nice arms. That was not a safe thought.
She did her best to take care of her skin, judging from the occasional skincare products he’d find lying around. Was that a safe thought? He wasn’t sure.
She was smart, but not terribly so. That was a safe thought.
She looked nice in her tights. That definitely wasn’t a safe thought.
And as Todoroki thought more and more about YN, he began realising that he thought most things she did were good, technically speaking. She helped Denki with school sometimes, was positively receptive when Midoriya wanted to write about her quirk in his notebooks, and always supported the girls in any of their endeavours. She was kind and pretty, and smart and strong and sweet.
And then, with wide eyes and a quelled feeling of horror, Todoroki thought, ’Oh my god,’
’I’m in love with the traitor.’
Tumblr media
“What now?”
Todoroki stood in front of YN’s door, hands in front of him and looking strangely innocent. His hair was combed, which was weird, and if YN took a deep breath, then she would smell some sort of cologne.
“There is a girl in the General Course. Ai Suzuki. I want you to reject her for me.” He said it was a completely straight face, as though he was telling Aizawa that he couldn’t come into class the next day. YN blinked, processing the order, before jutting her head out in shock and recoiling again.
“What? That’s terrible! You need to reject her yourself, for her sake!” She looked appalled and was about to slam the door shut when he put his arm and foot in.
“Remember...YN.”
From behind the door, YN stopped, before groaning and opening the door again.
“Fine. And when the poor girl is miserable and goes around slandering you, don’t come after me. And we’re not friends. Don’t call me YN.”
She shoved past him and locked her door, storming down the hallway and making tracks for the General Education dorms.
“What floor, jackass?”
“She’ll be in the greens,” Todoroki called back, sounding ready to laugh. YN turned and walked through the doors, keeping an eye out for a girl standing alone.
Sure enough, a student who reminded YN of a doe stood with her hands in front of her, looking side to side. It broke YN’s heart that Ai would have to be rejected in such a cruel way, but it was her or YN’s entire wellbeing.
“Hey, are you Ai Suzuki?” YN approached the young woman, who jumped. Ai’s brow furrowed.
“Y-Yes. Where’s Shoto?”
YN sighed. “There’s no easy way about this, especially since he’s such a coward.”
Ai’s entire body seemed to slump, her eyes watering and hands shaking. YN felt the guilt bubbling in her stomach, but she continued.
“But he wanted me to tell you that he’s not interested. I’m really sorry that it had to be this way, but-”
Abruptly, Ai reached forward and slapped YN across the cheek. Tears were streaming down the young lady’s face.
“You-! You-! I…!” Ai seemed to be grasping for words while YN nursed her stinging cheek with her hand. YN didn’t retaliate but tried to help Ai sort out her emotions.
“I know it’s terrible, and if you want, I take you to him so that way you can work out what you need. I get that-”
“Just shut up!” Ai snapped, before flushing. “Please. I…” Fresh tears made their way to Ai’s face before she ran off. YN turned to head back, only to see Ai run headfirst into Todoroki. He seemed surprised, glancing up at YN before looking down at Ai. Ai stared at him, eyes wide before sobbing again and running to the General Education dorms. Todoroki watched her run with curiosity, while YN watched with pity.
“I see it went well.” Todoroki turned back to YN, about to say more when he realised the red mark on her cheek. “Did she hurt you?”
“Why would you care?” YN snapped, glaring at him. “You’re fucking terrible, and that’s bad, coming from me.”
She stormed off, letting Todoroki watch her leave. He seemed stunned, standing and blinking dumbly at her retreating figure.
“...”
Tumblr media
YN held an ice pack to her cheek, staring at her ceiling, watching the blades of the fan spin. She wished that her mind was empty and aimless, but concerns surrounding Todoroki arose.
He had become more casual than he ever was, something that didn’t happen even before he found out about her ties to the League. It was as though he was trying to seem pleasant, but it all seemed like a trap.
“Fucking ice-for-brains.” YN pouted. “Bitchboy.”
YN’s phone abruptly rang and she jumped. It was several hours earlier than the League usually called, so when she picked it up and saw the contact ’L’, her brow furrowed.
“Hey, everything okay?” She asked, worry lacing her tone. She heard broad laughter, and then Toga giggling.
“More than okay! We can come sooner!!”
“Wh...what?” YN blinked, flabbergasted, before rushing to her door and locking it. She held the phone to her shoulder while stuffing towels along the bottom so no one could eavesdrop. “What’s going on?”
“Shiggy found a way to mass-produce the Nomu so we can get to you in, like, two days!” Someone spoke, but it was too distant to hear who before Toga started talking again. “Tomorrow! We can get to you tomorrow!”  Toga was audibly jumping, and YN felt her shoulders go slack.
“No way.” She breathed. It was like the world was on her shoulders, and that it had been slowly lifted. “Are you serious?”
“Yup! I wouldn’t joke with you on this,” Toga said. “Probably.”
“Probably?” YN laughed for the first time in what felt like forever. “You have no idea how happy this makes me.”
“Well, we’ve got a bonus for you! For hangin’ on!”
“Yeah? What is it?” YN fell onto her bed with a grin.
“Well, according to Shiggy,” (Shigaraki, in the back, howled ‘Don’t call me that!’) “Had everyone accounted for except for one! And, well, he just so happens to have been doing some no-no stuff lately…”
“I get to kick Todoroki’s ass?” YN sat up from her bed, excitement on her face. A deep part of her felt disgusted at the glee in getting revenge, but it was quickly put down at the thought of Todoroki begging for forgiveness.
“Yup!” Toga tittered. “And then Kurogiri can take you back with us and we can do whatever! It’s not like we’ve got any parents to regulate us there, anyway.”
“That was a twenty-five cent word, Himi. I’m glad. What’s the time of the attack? I wanna set an alarm.”
“Hey!” Toga yelled over the phone, and YN winced. “Shiggy! When are we gonna see YN-chan and Deku and Ochako?”
“If everything doesn’t get fucked up, then we should get there by six in the afternoon. Don’t fuck it up.” The phone was clearly pointed in Shigaraki’s direction, but he still sounded a bit distant.
“Yessir,” Though he couldn’t see it, YN saluted. “You got it.”
“We’ll see you soon, YN! I looove you!”
“See ya, Himi.”
YN hung up, laying back down on the bed with a giddy smile. She rolled left and right, hugging the phone to her chest as she laughed. She knew she was being loud, and if Todoroki heard, then he would be suspicious, but she didn’t care anymore. She was so close to freedom, so close that she could taste it.
So close.
Tumblr media
Classes were unbearable.
YN felt like a kid on the last day of middle school, right before they go to Disney or some other amusement park. The day trudged on, and no matter what Mina and Tooru did to try and get YN’s attention, her thoughts always returned to the League and the attack.
Sure, she was nervous. It was entirely possible that everything could go wrong and it all fail. She could be arrested for treason, Todoroki could decide to expose her, and the League could choose to leave her behind. It could end in absolutely disaster for her.
But YN had hope.
And that hope remained after classes had finished. YN was near skipping, waltzing past Todoroki on her way to her dorms.
She knew she needed to pack her things. It was all simple stuff; clothes, her toothbrush and toothpaste. She had to leave her phone behind, which was regrettable, but it had a tracker in it that her parents and select friends could see.
And speaking of friends, YN needed to get Tooru and Mina out of U.A. before the attack, and have them be gone for long enough that they would remain safe. There were ways, but YN knew she needed to keep discreet.
So, when she walked to her dorm, she eyed the clock. It was five fourty-three, which mean that she could have them take a relatively short trip and still be kept in the clear. YN caught Mina and Tooru on her way. Mina near jumped, nervously grinning.
“Hey, are you okay? You’ve been weird all day!”
“Yeah, yeah. Um, I have a favour to ask you two.” YN pulled them aside, taking out her wallet.
“What is it? Is something wrong?” Tooru presumably tilted her head.
“Ehh, sorta?” YN faked a grimace. “I, uh...my period started.”
Mina blanched, and Tooru placed a hand on YN’s shoulder.
“What’dya need?”
“Yeah! We’ll go get it!”
“God bless, you two. Uh, you know that mart that we came across that had the best f/s? It’s like, fifteen minutes by the train?” YN shelled out the cash, making sure there was extra. “I’m craving that, to be honest. And you guys can get something else, of course.”
“Sure!” Mina took the money and shoved it into her pocket. “Let’s go, Tooru! We’ll see you later!”
YN waved as the two dashed out, knocking Todoroki on their way to the doors. Mina shot him a half-hearted apology before they were gone. YN gave a languid wave back, feeling almost sad. She wouldn’t see them again. It pulled against her heartstrings, but she knew that she was too far in to back out.
“They’re certainly energetic.” Todoroki walked up to YN, eyeing the doors with his hands in his pockets.
“Yeah. Whatever.” YN’s peacefully happy demeanour changed. She glared at him before walking away. Before she could successfully escape, though, Todoroki put a hand on her shoulder.
“I want to talk to you.”
YN glanced at the clock. It was ten before six, and she felt nervous. “Not right now. I’m busy.”
“Please, it’ll just take a second. I’ll come with you.” He took his hand off of her shoulder, and she rolled her eyes.
“Fine. But make it quick.” YN began speed walking to her dorms, not caring if she looks suspicious. “I have shit to do.”
“I wanted to actually ask you in private. It’s something...a bit personal.”
YN stopped walking, eyes wide. “You’re not going to…?”
Todoroki recoiled, shaken. “No! No, it’s not. It’s an emotional matter.”
“Oh, joy.” YN rolled her eyes again before almost jogging to her dorm. She eyed a different clock, and it showed five fifty-two.
“I’ve been thinking about it. About you,” Todoroki began as they walked into her dorm. YN grabbed a backpack off of her wall and began throwing whatever she could find in there that she would deem necessary. Todoroki shut the door, but stood by it as YN spun around.
“I know that I’ve been...complicated towards you.” Todoroki said, rolling his hands to help elaborate.
“Uh, yeah. That’s a nice way of putting it.” YN threw eyeliner and mascara into the front pocket of her bag. Todoroki huffed, upset that it backfired.
“I think you’re pretty,” He tried again, leaning a bit towards her and sounded hopeful. “And smart.” YN said nothing, but paused and gave him a look that was a mix of confusion, disgust, and ‘duh’. “And I know that I’ve been making you work because of circumstances that were out of your control.”
“What’s your point, Todoroki?” YN threw the last of her underwear in the bag and zipped it, spinning around with her hands on her hips and the bag over her shoulder. “Get to it.”
Todoroki faltered, eyeing the bag. “What are you packing for?”
“None of your goddamn business. Speak, or else I’m ignoring you.”
This snapped Todoroki out of his staring contest with a video game pin on your bag, and he swallowed. He was stiff, and anxious, and hid his face with a ninety-degree bow.
“Please be my girlfriend.”
YN froze, shock on her face. “What?”
“Please date me.” YN shook her head, snapping out of it, before her jaw dropped and mixed emotions came over her face. “You’re fucking…” She trailed off, unable to finish her sentence.
“I know that you must hate me. But I’m sure that you’re not the traitor by choice. If you choose to date me, my father and I can help you leave the League. We can protect you, and we can-”
“Protect me from what? Wait, wait, wait. You’re saying that they guy that fucking blackmailed me wants to protect me from people that have done nothing to me?”
“Done nothing?” Todoroki rose from the bow, looking both confused and hurt. “They’re villains, YN. They are absolutely going to hurt you!”
“Bullshit. They...they’re the only ones that gave a damn the whole time!” YN threw her bag on the ground, throwing her hands up in the air. “I fucking-! I can’t believe-!”
“And what about Mina? And Tooru? And I could have sold you out at any point!”
“Oh, so that’s how it’s gonna go?” YN felt heat rise to her cheeks and her stomach turn in rage. “Yeah, okay. Mina and Tooru were great. And that’s why they’re not here right now! But you wanna fucking hold it above my head that you could have had me fucking arrested?”
“That’s not what I was trying to say!” Todoroki’s voice lowered from the shout, desperation in his tone. “No, I..! I was trying to say that I love you! And that I didn’t want you to get hurt. Please. We can get you out of this.”
Todoroki grabbed her shoulders, not forcefully, but intimately. He could feel her breath on his face, and the tears beginning to show in his eyes.
“You...unbelievable!” If Todoroki looked close enough, he could see traces of betrayal. “I have no idea what you think asking someone out is. You can’t just walk in an-and expect love!” YN voice rose with every word, until Todoroki leaned forward and placed a kiss firmly on her lips. She let out a muffled yelp, frozen, but Todoroki didn’t move.
He savoured it, because for just a moment, when he closed his eyes, he could imagine you loving him back.
But then a blaring alarm from YN’s phone went off.
YN shoved Todoroki off, coughing and rubbing at her mouth furiously. Todoroki stood still, a blush on his cheeks. YN licked her top teeth as the alarm sounded, hearing the constant, stinging ring, taking a moment before a sick joy rose in her.
“YN, please...We can work this out together. We can get you into the witness protection program, or something-”
“Too late,” YN hissed. Todoroki faltered, taking a step back.
“What?”
“I said, you fucking reject,” She muttered lowly, looking up at him with her head hung. “Too. Late.”
“W-What? Why?” Todoroki began to puff his chest in some indiscriminate mix of rage and sorrow when he felt something close around his throat. It was as though he was being choked, but no one was touching him. His hands flew to try and relieve the pressure only to be able to claw at his own neck. There was the sound of glass breaking outside, and people screaming. He could hear Present Mic calling for help.
“You really thought...” YN began as furniture began floating, along with Todoroki himself. He kicked his feet and struggled, but he was thrown back through the dorm door and into the hallway wall. YN was sweating, the alarm still going off on her levitating desk, and she looked thrilled, with her eyes pulsing out of her skull and her hair flying in front of her face. Her bag levitated towards her, and her jacket fit itself onto her shoulders before the backpack followed. Todoroki could only watch in pain as she approached.
“You thought you could control me forever?” YN wheezed. Todoroki turned to see Midoriya and Bakugou running towards them before a smoky, inky black portal consumed them both. His eyes went wide when he realised what was happening.
“I thought heroes were supposed to do the right thing, Todoroki.” YN spat, grabbing his chin so he could stare her in the eyes. They had begun sparking all sorts of colours, even ones that he had never seen before. More furniture in the living room and open dorms were floating and Todoroki felt his heart in his throat.
“You…” He choked, one eye closing from the pain in his spine. “You bid your time…”
“Abso-fuckin-lutely.” She grinned, eyes crazed, before using her quirk to pick him up again. This time, he wasn’t choking, but he couldn’t move. “And now, you must suffer the consequences.”
She waltzed from the dorms to outside, dragging Todoroki behind her. When he passed the doors, he had to look away from the heat and the light, but when he opened his eyes, he felt tears swell.
The main building of U.A. was up in crystal blue flames, with students and staff alike running out screaming and crying. Someone fell out of the windows, on fire and wailing the entire way down, and there was a sickening crack when they landed. The heat scorched his cheeks, and embers flew into his eyes and hair. When he opened his mouth to yell, he could taste the copper of blood on his tongue. He could see Midoriya and Ochako trying to fend off Toga, and Kirishima and Sero trying to restrain a Nomu, only to fail.
He knew that even if he could make any noise, if he could move, if he could use his quirk, he wouldn’t be able to. The shock set in his bones, and he felt the weight of the world.
“You know, they were supposed to come about a week from now.” YN waltzed across the burning grass, putting it out before she could burn her shoes. “But when they heard you were blackmailing me, they sped it up. Isn’t that sweet?”
“How could you?” Todoroki managed to spit out. He saw the gentle smile on YN’s face, and he felt his heart snap. “They were...our friends…”
“No. I mean, at first I was guilty. Actually, I really was guilty right up to when you found out. Then I realised that they didn’t really notice me.” She hummed, clearly in a good mood, with the terror and chaos around her. “Mina and Tooru kinda noticed. But they bought whatever I told them. They’re still good people, but they didn’t care that I clearly had something on my mind. Least of all you?” YN turned her head to look at Todoroki. “Did you know I used to have a crush on you? You didn’t so much as glance at me for the entire time before you found out.”
She looked back forward, making her way to the swirling black mass. Kurogiri and Shigaraki stepped out, and when Shigaraki saw YN, he took to scratching his neck. “You didn’t fuck up.” He sounded surprised.
“Nope!” YN chirped. “I’m ready to roll once this place is dust.”
Shigaraki let out a dry laugh at her choice of words before looking over at Todoroki, who was trying to struggle. “You already had him?”
“He was trying to ask me out.” YN crossed her arms. “So I just took advantage of the opportunity.”
“Cool. Dabi’s already gotten the main school-”
“Clearly.” YN piped in.
“So the damage has been dealt. I just need to recall everyone.” Shigaraki gestured at Kurogiri, waving a lackadaisical hand. “Originally, I was just gonna leave you, actually.”
“Wait, seriously?” YN grimaced, completely ignoring Todoroki’s squirming.
“Yeah. But then he found you out.” He turned to Todoroki, who froze and glared at Shigaraki. “When are you gonna fight him?”
“I dunno. I kinda wanted everyone to be here, but if we can’t make that work…”
“Get it over with.”
“You’re the boss.” YN shrugged, giving Todoroki only a moment to be afraid before crushing him against the nearest wall. His eyes were overshadowed by his hair for a moment when his entire body curled in pain, both against his will and YN’s quirk. He felt bile crawl up his throat, and spit came out when he coughed.
“Y...YN...please…” He looked up at her, tears flowing down his cheeks and crushing sorrow on his face. “I know there’s good in you…you’re not a villain…”
YN winced, and for a moment, she looked conflicted. Todoroki felt hope, his eyes widening, until the conflict was abruptly gone. In its place was rock-hard disgust and he was picked up again, before being smashed into the dirt. YN began throwing him violently, increasing the strength and rate of the hits. She didn’t stop until his head hung and he was panting. Blood was everywhere, and when he looked up at her, it was flowing into his eyes.
“It’s not about good or evil anymore.” YN whispered. It was potent, even amongst all the chaos and noise. “There is no good or bad anymore. Just power.”
YN looked almost deranged, eyes blown wide and panting heavily. Her hair had fallen into her face, and Shigaraki looked surprised, again.
“Wow. Didn’t expect you to go loose.”
“I hope it’s okay, sir.” YN let Todoroki fall, blowing the hair out of her face and composing herself.
“Yeah, sure, whatever. I don’t care.”
YN nodded and Kurogiri placed a hand on her shoulder.
“You did well. Welcome to the League.” He watched YN give a huge smile, as though she didn’t just help slaughter an entire school, and rather had just been given a star spot in a play.
“Thank you, sir! You won’t regret it!”
“I’m sure we won’t.” Kurogiri nodded, looking sagely at the destruction and the approaching forms of Toga, Dabi, Spinner, and Twice.
“I’m sure we won’t.”

Part 4: Fight or flight
Tumblr media
Pairing: Aurora x MC (Iris Everette)
Word count: 3.2 K words
Part 1   Part 2    Part 3
Warning: Fluff and a little description of abuse
Taglist: @miyakokurono @agent-breakdance @trappedinfandoms @lilyofchoices @sekizincimektup (let me know if you want to be tagged)
Songs: Emergency by Jay Sean and Clean by Taylor Swift
It had been a week since their fight in the supply closet and Aurora was in a flux of emotions. On one hand, she wanted her baby girl back in her arms and kiss her till the end of time. But, on the other hand, she was just so fucking pissed.
Iris had not come home to the apartment for a week. She stayed, showered and ate at the hospital. Aurora kept true to her promise and gave Iris her space, but that didn't mean it hurt less. The seventh day after the fight, Aurora was distraught.
She had headed to Sienna's room that night and one look at her face and Sienna declared that it was the "eat ice cream till you are sick" time. They saw so many cliche rom-coms and crying which resulted in Elijah wheeling into their room to see if both of them were okay. "Oh my god... Rom-coms really?! They are shit."
"No Eli, they are the shit." Sienna corrected him.
"Get in or get out Eli." Aurora said as she sniffled.
"Geez okay I will join you two to see how can girls cry to such cliche storylines."
Nonetheless, the three of them started crying towards the ending of Titanic.
"Rose is such a dumbass.. Like how COULD YOU LET SUCH A NATIONAL TREASURE DIE?!" Elijah screamed at the TV.
"Yo...I think we broke him." Aurora said as Elijah continued to cry.
"Nah... He will be fine. But what about you?" Sienna asked as she turned towards Aurora.
"Everything sucks."
"Big mood." Elijah chimed in.
"It's just...it feels like I am in a waiting room." Aurora sighed. Sienna sent a questioning gaze towards Aurora.
"It's like... Iris continuously hints about her past. I like her so much....I really do but, she just won't let me cherish her completely. She won't let me in.. She has just put me in that space where I know more that the anybody else but less to know her completely. I know I shouldn't complain, but..... I hate seeing her in so much pain and I want to erase the sufferings. I was to kiss her troubles away. I want to tell her that I am all in, that I will be with her, through thick and thin... But, she still holds me at an arms distance." Aurora sighed, as the pain resurfaced.
"Aww honey...." Sienna reached and hugged her. Aurora shuddered and the need to cry just became so overwhelming.
"I have known Iris for a year and half and let me tell you, she has changed. She laughs more, jokes more and smiles more. She was a withered bud but when you came into her life, she bloomed into a beautiful rose. Iris... had never had many people she could be herself around or count on. I think her mother was the last person who she truly was the real version of Iris, but after that, nobody. So she grew thorns, so that nobody can hurt her again. She had accepted the fact that she was going to be a alone forever. But then, you came. You transformed her. It's a damn great accomplishment if you ask me." Sienna said.
Aurora blew a raspberry. "Trust me I know that. And I am proud of her for slowly opening up. She is self sufficient, independent and so so strong...but she doesn't need to carry that burden alone. I want to share everything. The happiness, the sadness, the beautiful and the ugly. She deserves so much more..."
"I know Aurora I know... I spoke to her a couple of days ago."
"What happened?" Aurora asked, hoping that she didn't sound too pussy whipped.
Stop lying to yourself... You ARE pussy whipped.
"She looks like she got hit by a train. She had dark circles large enough to carry groceries, she zones out sometimes and she is really, really paranoid. Like the other day, Bryce just went to close her eyes, so that he could surprise her. She fucking grabbed his hands and had him on his ass in a blink of an eye!!"
"What?!" Aurora was shocked. This was certainly a new development. She thought to herself.
"I am not joking. Luckily everything is fine but damn, Queen B has some nasty bruises on his wrist."
"Shit." Maybe, just maybe there was something else affecting her and the 'break' was just the cherry on top.
Fuck I am such a selfish bitch..
"Don't." Sienna said before Aurora threw herself into the pit of self loathing.
"Huh?"
"Don't feel guilty. Don't beat yourself. You need to understand that you are pushing her to be a better person, a better friend, a better partner. You are constantly challenging and calling her out. And I believe, that the kind of love you both have, it can survive any storm."
"Love?!" Aurora asked, her eyes as wide as saucers.
"Duh! Everybody can see it that the both of you are completely and utterly in love. Everybody, but the two of you."
"Do you think its true?" Aurora asked, trying to wrap her mind around this concept.
Sienna rolled her eyes before muttering, "Gods, for two smart people with their IQ's above 120, you guys are hella dense."
Aurora looked down at her hands, deep in thought. She was never familiar with the concept of this kind of love. Sure, she 'loved' her parents and family, but love another human being? That to romantically? Never.
She was of a scientific background and she always brushed aside the concept of love. Earlier if you would have asked her ‘what was love?’ she would have said that it was just a rush of oxytocin. Just a flux of chemicals. But now, if she were to close her eyes and think about it, forest green eyes stared right back at her.
"Holy shit." Aurora breathed out.
"God finally EEEEEEE!! One down, one more to go. Just know, I am rooting for the both of you." Sienna said as she squeezed her hand.
"Also can you like hurry up and make up? I might end up losing fifty dollars to Bryce." Elijah chimed in.
"This guys have been BETTING on when we make up?!" Aurora asked in disbelief.
"Eli, SHH!" Sienna smacked him, bullshiting back and forth. But Aurora didn't pay attention to that.
She was in love.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Iris stepped to the back of the empty elevator and leaned against the wall, sighing. This week had been shit for her. Her girlfriend had called for a timeout, her asshole of a father was walking free on the streets, she had a panic attack, and she lost a patient.
She hated being so paranoid. She hated having to look over her shoulder every minute. She felt so guilty for hurting Bryce, and she profusely apologized by buying him his favourite tacos.
She shouldn't have to stay in such fear. Hadn't she suffered enough? Hadn't she lost enough already? Is her life nothing but a game for the man upstairs?
Being of a scientific bent of mind, the laws of her world were bound by logic and proof. She never really believed in the existence of God. But at moments of weakness, like now, she couldn't help but wonder who is responsible for fucking her life up.
The lift dinged, and she opened her eyes to see which floor it had opened on. But what she saw, made her eyes open wide.
Rory met her eyes and then looked down as she stepped into the lift. She pressed the button for the fourth floor where Iris was also heading.
"By the way, chief said that there is a storm incoming. He wanted everyone to be prepared incase of an emergency." Iris spoke up, cutting through the uncomfortable silence.
"Yeah...my aunt told me that. It also explains why they sent Dr. Ramsey and a couple of electricians to check on the backup generators."
Iris chuckled. "Yap. You should have seen the way he was grumbling and muttering quote unquote- 'God I hate that place...it gives me the heebie jeebies'."
"What?! No way!" She turned around to look at Iris, instantly regretting it. Iris looked like shit. Her eyes were bloodshot and she was so tired that she had to lean against the wall of the elevator for support.
"If you don't believe it, I can ask Baz to send the video to you. Chief had a kick out of it."
Aurora giggled. "Okay, send it to me Adara."
Iris winced and Rory turned towards the elevator doors, the awkward silence settling in. It was slowly suffocating her. She thought that the deafening silence would continue indefinitely, but Aurora spoke up.
"I just...I miss you."
Iris looked up to see the back of Rory's head.
"I miss you too Rory..."
Aurora's heart soared and shattered at the same time. God she missed that nickname so much.
"Adara... Please. Just...please."
Iris shuddered. Just a simple plea, but it held so much meaning. She walked ahead and stood next to her. Aurora found herself leaning towards her, missing the warmth and comfort Iris gave her.
"Rory, I am so sorry... But I can't. It was never my intention to hurt you. You deserve someone strong and willing to be by your side... I am not that. My emotional burden will drown you."
"Adara, I will be the judge of that. If you just-"
"Baby, I care about you alot. And, I don't want you to get hurt... Just know that I am so damn lucky to have had you... for those seven months, I am so, so greatful." She proceeded to kiss Aurora's cheek, before exiting the lift.
Aurora was stunned. She reached to feel the place where Iris kissed her.
She couldn't help but wonder why Iris's words sounded like a final goodbye.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Everything was okay. There weren't any accidents so far and the electricity was still running. Iris sat in the diagnostics room staring at the window, watching the rain drops pelt mercilessly on the glass window and the trees dancing to the tune of the gale.
She always found the rain soothing. It helped her escape. She could spend hours looking at the rain drops, racing each other to the bottom of the window. Her mom used to make hot chocolate for her on such rainy days. They would cuddle on the sofa, and have endless movie marathons. It's one of the happy memories she remembered from her past.
She always cherished those moments with her mom. Life at home may have been hell, but her mother's spirit did not once break. She was so strong and brave. She was kind and loved with all her heart. Iris always wondered if she would ever be half the woman her mom was or the fact that would her mother be proud of the way Iris turned out to be.
Guess we will never know.
Her pager beeped and she looked down to see what it said. 'Report to the nurses station on the fourth floor. Your lawyer is here.'
Huh, that's strange. Thomas said that he won't come till next week..
Shrugging off her doubts she started heading to the fourth floor. She walked down the long, empty hallway whistling. It was just a front but deep down, she had a feeling that she was being watched. She turned to look behind but there was no one following her.
You are just being paranoid Iris...
But isn't it better to be safe than sorry?
She turned the corner and she collided with someone.
"Oh, I am so sorry-" Iris said as she backed a little and straightened her scrubs. She then looked up and she was completely frozen. She felt as if she was sucker punched in the gut. All the breath left her body.
He was here.
"Oh no its my- Oh." A cruel smile slowly etched into his face. He had aged, which was pretty obvious but prison made him look rugged with white hair peppering his balding head and his eyes looked more maniacal.
"Hello mija."
She had dreamt their encounter many times before. How she would punch the fuck out of his face, and break his left wrist, the way he used to break hers. She would beat him up so hard that he would end up in the emergency room. Those imaginations were so graphic, that she could taste the blood of that monster on the tip of her tongue.
But, at the end of the day it was only fantasy. Dreams are those tantalizing flames, which help keep the fire in us alive, while reality on the other hand, is a bucket of cold water, smothering those flames.
She just stood there in shock. It felt as if her head had been dunked into water. She saw his lips move and the people walking around them, but she couldn't hear a thing. Her breath was getting shorter and shorter. She felt weak. Pathetic. Just like the sixteen year old who lay there on the floor, awaiting her death.
No, no, no, I can't go into a panic attack right now.
"IRIS!!" Grayson shook her shoulders. "NO! Get the fuck away from me asshole!" Iris said as she tried to push him away. She felt like a bucket of maggots had been poured inside her shirt. She felt dirty, filthy and gross.
"Iris what has come over you sweetheart? You weren't like this before.." Grayson said, his face morphed into fake concern but she could see the anger and the bloodlust shining in his hazel eyes.
"Don't TOUCH ME!!" She exclaimed as she finally got him to take his grubby hands off her. And he had the audacity to act hurt. This bitch should get a fucking award for his acting.
"Hey, hey, hey." Ethan stepped between the father and daughter. "Sir, I will have to ask you to back away right this instance." Ethan said, in a voice so cold, that it could have withered a blooming flower.
Grayson held his"There is nothing going around here son. Just a father and daughter reconnecting after a decade. Ain't that mija?"
"Don't listen to him. He is a world class manipulator and a habitual liar. Get him the fuck out of here." Iris spat out, her voice poisonous.
Ethan turned to look at her, his eyes asking if this was the man who she had a restraining order against. Iris nodded subtly.
"I'm sorry sir, but you are causing a scene in a hospital, where people are sick and they need the quiet."
"No problem so- what's your name?"
Don't tell him, don't tell him, don't-
"Dr. Ethan Ramsey."
GODDAMMIT ETHAN. Just can't keep his fucking trap shut. She knew, that he would come for Ethan.
"Well Ethan, I don't mean to cause any problems. I am just here to take my girlie for a coffee.. have a chat." He smiled in a friendly way but, everybody knows that the term 'chat' means thrashing.
"I SAID NO. I don't want anything to do with you asswipe."
"How dare you-" Grayson's face twisted into a furious scowl. Iris just cowered behind Ethan.
"Sir, with all due respect, leave." Ethan said as two security guards started moving towards them.
"Alright, alright. There is no need to be so aggressive. I am nothing but a old man. What would I do? Beat up someone?" The last question directed towards Iris, his eyes gleaming. A chill went down her back, out of intense fear.
"I will meet you soon mija... And when we will.... we will have all the time in the world to catch up."
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Running.
Iris ran down the hallway, to a place where she could have some damn peace and quiet, which is kind of hard in a hospital crawling with patients, doctors and the grim reaper.
Her breath was getting frantic, and the need to breakdown was increasing with every step she took.
Get a hold of yourself Iris. It's just a little longer. You don't need to be a mess in front of him. You don't need him to have that power over you. Iris repeated that as a mantra as she half walked, half ran down the never-ending hallway, away from her haunting past.
She was just crossing the nurses' station where, Aurora stood, reading through her charts.
God, please don't notice me. I don't have it in me to face another heartbreak. Iris prayed.
A few nurses greeted her, and Iris nodded and smiled politely before her eyes landed on Aurora's cool, calculating ones. She quickly averted her eyes away, so that she would not betray the inner turmoil in her.
But, Aurora knew. Iris had that look in her eyes as if she would shatter like a porcelain vase. So, she shut her chart and followed the red head.
Iris had reached the lift, pressing the button continuosly, so that it could hurry the hell up. After what seemed like an eternity, it finally came and she stepped into the elevator. She pressed the button leading her to the basement.
There is a old on call room which is pretty faraway from the hospital's main rooms. So even if she broke things, screamed and howled, nobody would know.
She saw the doors closing and she let out a tired breath when Aurora nimbly slipped into the lift.
Can't I catch a fucking break?
"What happened, Iris? Seems like you saw a ghost. You look hella pale." Aurora asked as she leaned in the wall across Iris.
Iris grimaced. If only she knew that she was not very faraway from the truth.
"Nothing." She said as she looked down at the floor.
"I know it's not nothing, Adara." Aurora said quietly. Iris' eyes snapped up.
"Aurora please. Just let me be." Iris pleaded, looking up at the screen showing that she had just reached the second floor.
"Don't fucking lie to me.Something is going on, I can see it in your eyes." Aurora said as she stepped and stood before her.
She placed her hands on her cheeks, forcing her green eyes to meet with her dark brown ones. "Please tell me Adara. Please let me in. Please don't shut me out this time."
"Aurora....I don't want to hurt you. I am cursed. Don't waste tears on a dead woma-" She said as tears filled her eyes.
The lift shuddered to a stop. And it was dark for a moment before the emergency lights switched on. She turned towards Aurora, who was slowly realizing the situation they were stuck in.
The lift was stuck and so were the both of them. And this time, there was no escaping for Iris.
I had to type and retype this so many times because it just didn't feel perfect..
Anyways, the next chapter will be the finale and after that will be the epilogue. I am so excited ;)

<Previous Chapter
Weeks went by after the break began. Eight weeks to be exact. Jared respected her decision for him and her to have a break, even though he didn’t really want a break. Jared thought back to him telling Jensen that he wished Lexi would tell him what she needed from him so he could give that to her. And she did just that. Now he had to put his words into action and respect her decision.
Jared, although slightly hurt with Lexi’s need to be seperated, still checked in on her through Jensen, asking how she was doing. If he was visiting Jensen, he’d swing by the little lake house to see her, even if it was only for five minutes.
One thing that didn’t change was them texting everyday. Unlike the last time they were apart, Jared didn’t shut himself off from her. It was like he was her best friend again, aside from Ellie, of course.
Walking up to the small house one afternoon Jared paused when he heard more than one voice coming from inside… a man’s voice. The door swung open and Lexi stood in front of him surprised. “Hey!” Lexi smiled at Jared. “What are you doing here?” She wrapped her arms around his shoulders squeezing him tightly before stepping back. “You remember Jesse?” She motioned to the familiar young man standing next to her.
“Oh, yeah!” Jared extended a hand to the other man. “Wait,” Jared paused for a second. “You’re the guy-”
“The guy that always hits on her.” Jesse said shaking Jared’s hand knowing Jared knows about his flirtatious ways.
Lexi had confided in Jared that Jesse has a hard time controlling his tongue and often says things that aren’t appropriate.
“I remember.” Lexi saw Jared clench his jaw in the way he did when attempted to control his anger or annoyance.
“Don’t worry, i’m not trying to activly fuck her. At least not at the moment.” Jesse said with arrogance.
“Ignore him!” Lexi spoke quickly seeing Jared’s expression go from annoyed to anger. “It’s not his fault. Jesse’s personality is asshole.”
“At least I don't attract psychos.” Jesse nudged his head toward Lexi as she flipped him off.
“Jesse also has no filter. He was diagnosed with ICD.”
“What the hell is ICD?” Jared lifted a single brow looking at the two of them.
“Impulse control disorder. He can’t always control what comes out of his mouth. He will also say crap to piss you off just for fun. Because he really is an asshole.”
“And you’re still a bitch.” Lexi laughed at his comeback. “I gotta go. I’ll talk to you later.” Jesse gave her a hug and looked at Jared. “Later pretty boy.” He gave a mock salute as he walked passed him and out the door.
After Jesse walked out Jared turned to Lexi. “I don’t like him.”
Lexi gave a chuckle. “I know you don’t. You haven’t liked him since I told you about his big mouth.”
“His ego seems to be just as big.”
“It can be.” Lexi gave a chuckle then noticed the discontent look on his face. A look she’d only seen during certain times with him. “Jared, are you jealous?” She crossed her arms over her chest as she stood in front of him.
“What?!” Jared gave an awkward huff. “No! I have no reason to be.”
Lexi took a step toward him looking intently at him. “Yes, you are! I know that look!” She pointed a finger in his face. “That’s the same look you would give your neighbor when he used to come over and I was there.”
“What look?! There is no look!” Jared defended, his voice giving a screech as it rose.
“Yes, there is!” She stepped closer. “Its that look of being nice but deep down wanting to punch the hell out of him!” Jared shook his head, letting it fall with a grin on his face. Lexi smiled slipping her hand under his chin, pulling his face to hers. His expression was bashful. “You have nothing to worry about.” His eyes were soft and reserved as they landed on hers. “You do not have to feel threatened. Especially by Jesse.”
Jared grabbed her hand and kissed the back of it before entwining their fingers. “Are you sure?”
Lexi stepped closer to him lifting her head to his. She felt the breath from his exhale brush against her lips. Jared was stunned when he felt Lexi’s lips brush against his for a brief moment before firmly taking a kiss. When the kiss broke it was much too soon for Jared’s liking. With a soft moan h took her face into his hands and pulled her back to him initiating another kiss. This time he didn’t let her pull away. He held her there, parting her lips with his, delving his tongue into her mouth, letting her familiar taste wash over him.
When they finally broke apart Lexi looked up at Jared with lust drunk eyes. “You have nothing to worry about.”
“I miss you.” Jared all but whimpered.
“I miss you, too.” Lexi pressed her forehead to his. “Just be patient with me a little longer.”
“As long as you need.” He whispered back.
Lexi missed Jared, she didn’t deny that. But she was trying to heal herself in he own way and he understood that, and she was thankful for that. Lexi was learning that she was able to lean on herself more. Although she sometimes called Jesse to help her through some days, she managed to make it through on her own. She was getting herself through panic attacks and going out into the city alone with little to no fear. Lexi felt strong, stronger than she’d felt in a long time. She’d even started working again. Albeit it was from Austin, but she was still getting a lot done. Lexi was proud of herself.
“So how long you’re gonna stay?” Jesse asked getting  comfortable on the couch.
“It’s only for a few days.” Lexi answered passing Jesse a beer hearing a knock on the screen door before in creaked open.
 “Lex?” Jared called walking in.
He was greeted by Lexi running to the front door. “Guess what?!”
“Whoa!” Jared held up his hands surprised by her greeting. “What is going on?!” He gave a laugh. “What did you need to tell me right away and in person?”
“Remember that store that Rush was talking about opening and how they wanted me to take the lead on it?”
“They gave it the green light?!” Jared asked with excitement.
“I go to L.A. next week!” Lexi jumped into Jared’s arms.
“Baby girl, that’s amazing!” He spun her around with enthusiasm. “I’m so proud of you!” He sat her back onto her feet.
“I’ll be right back!. I’m gonna go run up to the house and tell Dee and Jay!” Lexi clapped her hands together rapidly. “Grab yourself a beer, I’ll be right back.” She told Jared and Jesse before running to the main house.
Jared grabbed a beer from the fridge turning to see Jesse sitting on the couch. Jared took a deep breath and walked over sitting in the chair across the small living room.
“You don’t like me do ya?” Jesse chimed from across the room.
"That's an understatement." Jared mumbled taking a long sip from his beer bottle. "But,” Jesse spoke again. “We should try or at least pretend to get along. Us both being in Lexi's life and all." He gave Jared an amused look. "Unless you're one of the guys that tell her who she can hang out with." "Lexi is a big girl. She can do whatever she wants." Jared looked over him noticing his smug grin.  "So," he ran a hand through his hair. "Tell me about this IC whatever. "
“ICD.” Jesse corrected. “It stands for Impulse control disorder. It’s a psychiatric disorder which basically means I fail to resist  an urge or an impulse. Or a temptation.” He gave a sly grin. “Or I speak on speak on a thought. Meaning it pops in my head and right out of my mouth.”
“I see.” Jared gave him an indecisive glare. “You playing’ me, aren’t you?”
“Not at all.”
“And Lexi is okay with you blurting out the stuff you do? About her?”
“At first she was a little taken aback by it by it took her less than a week to become immune to my big mouth.” Jess nodded. “That and she nearly broke my nose.”
“That’s my girl.” Jared smiled taking another swig of beer.
“Well, not anymore.” Jesse added smugly.
Jared looked over to Jesse with assertiveness. “I don’t see her running to anyone else. Do you?”
“Yet.” Jesse challenged. “Matter of time if you ask me. After all, she is an extremely attractive woman. Won’t take long for a guy closer to her age to come by and woo her.” Jesse stood walking to the kitchen, tossing his empty beer into the trash.
“Sure.” Jared rolled his eyes with a bitter expression standing to look out the glass door.
”You know, Someone who is more on her level. Someone who can understand her emotionally, that gets her every need.”
“Fuck you.” Jared spat knowing what Jesse was insinuating.
“Ooh!” Jesse put his hands up. “Touchy touchy.”
“I’ll go see what’s taking Lex?” Jared placed his bottle on the counter with a loud thud.
“Yeah, you do that. Send her back down here to me.”
Jared turned and looked at him. “Do you ever get tired of hearing yourself talk?”
“Not really, no.” He crossed his arms over his chest. “But, I have a question. Have you ever gone down on her?”
“That’s none of your fucking business.” Jared spat taking another step toward Jesse.
“I bet she tastes good.” Jesse stood as if in thought, yapping his index finger on his chin. “Now, when she cums is it sweet or tangy?”
Jared shook his head. “Does she know you talk about her like this?”
“Yeah, she does actually.” Jesse grinned again.
“What do I do?” Lexi said as she walked back in with a laundry basket.
“I think I hurt your boy toys feelings.” Jesse said grabbing the basket and setting it on the table. “Apparently he doesn’t like the way I talk about you.”
“Oh, what is it this time?” She looked from Jared to Jesse. “My rack or my ass you talkin bout?”
“Actually I was wondering what you taste like.” Jesse said honestly.
She walked over to Jesse and put her hands on his shoulders, Jared stiffening seeing her touch him. “You wish you would be able to find out.” She gave his cheek a little smack before turning away with a grin.
“I asked Jared, but he wouldn’t tell me.” Jesse shrugged nonchalantly.
“And he didn’t punch you in the face?” Lexi looked at Jesse then to Jared.
“The day is young.” Jared mumbled.
“I’m warning you Jess, if he takes a swing at you I’ll let him.”.
“Oh, I’m a big boy. I can handle him.”
“I gotta get going.” Jared turned to Y/N. “I told Gen I would be there by four to pick up the kids.”
“Give them kisses from me.” She told him pulling him into a hug.
“I’ll call you later.” Jared told her before placing a kiss on her cheek and leaving.
“Hey.” Lexi grabbed Jared’s arm. “When the kids go back to Gen’s come over and hang out. I want to spend some time with you before I go to L.A.”
“Absolutely.” He told Lexi before looking back at Jesse with a complacent grin on his face.
When he walked out the house Lexi turned to Hesse and punched him hard in the arm. “Seriously?!”
“Owe!” He grabbed his arm. “What?!”
“You asked him what I taste like?!”
“It was just a question!” Jesse rubbed his arm. “You won’t let me find out so I asked him!” Lexi glared at him crossing her arms over her chest. “Oh, come on. You saying he’s never had his face between those pretty legs?” Jesse stepped towards her.
Lexi dropped her arms meeting his stance. “Oh, he has. And he’s done things to me you’ve only fantasize about.”
“I bet.” Jesse bit his lip.
“And one day, you’ll piss him off enough. And he and I may be back together by then, and he will beat the living shit out of you.”
“I’d be worth it.”
Lexi laughed. “How did you not get your ass kicked yet?”
“I’m lucky.” He grinned back at her and saw her serious expression. “I’ll attempt to control my mouth a little with Jared.”
“Please. Because Jared is one person that will forever be in my life. No. Matter. What.”  Lexi poked him in the chest with a finger.
~
It had been several days since Lexi told Jared she was going to L.A. She was excited to get back to work, really get back to work. Not that online only, web conference crap she’d been doing. Now don’t think she didn’t love working from Austin, she did. But she missed being as hands on as she used to be.
Lexi was excited to see Ellie. Not just a quick weekend thing but a week of hanging out between work. Not to mention they had a ton of girl talk to catch up on.
“Knock knock!” Jared said loudly from the front door as he ran in from the rain.
“Hey, get in here before you get soaked!” Lexi shut the door behind him as thunder cracked through the sky.
“The wind is really picking up out there.” Jared slid his raincoat off.
“You should have waited to come over when it slacked off a bit.” Lexi handed him a towel.
“Supposed to rain like this till you leave for L.A. I’ll take my chances.” Jared smiled down at her.
“I’m excited and nervous.” Lexi told him as they got comfortable in the small living room. “It’s been so long since I’ve been in the scene, I don’t want to make a fool of myself.”
“You won’t! You’ll do perfect.” Jared reached across the sofa and took her hand. “Did you find out how long you;re saying?”
“Four days.” She entwined their fingers before looking back to him. “I kind of have a weird favor to ask.
“Anything.”
“Since Ellie’s place is full I decided to stay at a hotel while I’m there.” Lexis eyes focused back on his hand and hers. “Being back in L.A. after everything that happened, being in L.A. alone,” Lexi took a breath and looked up at Jared. “Can you come to L.A. with me? I’m terrified of being there alone, especially at night.” The words just fell out of her mouth like water down a fall. “I’m not saying follow me around and crap. I just want to know you’re there, close by. Just, just in case.”
“Of course.” Jared answered sweetly. “You don’t have to explain, I get it.” He kissed the back of her hand.
“I know we’re still iffy, but just having you there would be like,” Her cheeks pinkened as she glanced down then back to his eyes. “You’re my security blanket.”
Jared could see the bashfulness on her face. “Hey,” He reached a hand to her cheek. “I’m glad i’m your security blanket.” A soft smile spread over his lips. “It’s good to know you still see me as someone who’ll protect you.”
“Well, yeah!” Lexi let out an exhaled laugh. “Aside from Jay, you’re the person I feel safest with.”
“You don’t feel safe with Jesse?” Jared asked with a healthy dose of sarcasm in his voice.
“I do.” Lexi smiled at Jared. “But it’s not the same. With you,”
“I know.” Jared chuckled. “I’m just picking.” He tucked her hair behind her ear. “When do we leave?”
Lexi squinted. “Day after tomorrow.”
“Talk about springing it on me!” Jared laughed.
“I know!” Lexi covered her face with her hands. “I’m sorry! I just didn’t know if I should ask you to do that or how to ask you.” Her cheeks pinkening as she fiddled with her hands not looking at Jared.
Jared gave another chuckle. “What hotel you want to stay at?” He wrapped a broad arm around her shoulders, pulling her against his side.
“You can pick.” She nestled close as Jared began flipping through his phone.
A few clicks later and Jared had a hotel and flight blooked. This was a step forward.

chapter one: bad limp
Beverly Marsh doesn’t trust men – most of them, at least. The only men she does trust are her good friends: Richie Tozier, Eddie Kaspbrak, and Mike Hanlon.
She and Richie had grown up across the street from one another, and he was the only kid who adamantly stuck by her side through the hells of elementary, middle, and high school in their small town of Derry, Maine. They were both the outcasts there from the get go. A kid who was too talkative for his own good, a boy who came out proudly bisexual in middle school, a teen who couldn’t sit still for the life of him; paired with a kid who had bruises on her body everyday, a girl who learned men looked at her wrong at too young of an age, a teen who got slut shamed for very untrue rumors. Then college came, and the two hauled ass to New York City to go to college, sharing a shitty one bedroom apartment and working hellish hours to scrape by. They didn’t go to the same university, though; Richie went to NYU for four years in drama and then went a different route of standup comedy while Beverly went to a smaller college to get a cosmetology degree.
Those years, they met Eddie Kaspbrak and Mike Hanlon. Eddie was at the same college Beverly went to on way to become a Science teacher, and they both worked at a crappy coffee place. They got along extremely well and after a while she introduced him to Richie, the two beginning their marriage-like bickering instantly. It was no surprise to Beverly when they got together in their second year of college. The feisty young man complemented their duo extremely well from the get-go, officially making them into an inseparable trio in no time. Then comes in Mike Hanlon, a sweet boy who grew up on a farm and who was on his way to become the best veterinarian known to man. ("I'm not gonna be the best one, guys, chill." - "Well, we think you will be.") He was Eddie’s room mate and about the time Eddie and Richie started dating was when Mike got pulled in, making their group an even four. Beverly had been hesitant at the time. Her father and every man back home made her wary of how men and boys would be towards her, her own boyfriend no help to that thought process at all, but Mike was quick to prove her wrong. He didn’t stare at her as if she were a piece of meat – hell, he still doesn’t, and neither do the other two (for obvious reasons) – and he’s never anything but gentle.
And then there’s Tom.
How she ended up with a nearly carbon copy of her father as a boyfriend during college is beyond her. He looked harmless back then, Bev remembers; he charmed her way into her life, making her believe everything was fine, but then slowly started manipulating different situations and raising his hand at her and verbally threatening her. She should’ve gotten out of it sooner but something kept her there with the asshole; something kept her from telling her friends, coming up with lame excuses as to why another bruise had formed on her wrist.
Fast forward some years. The even four graduated – Tom, too – and Richie beings to work his ass off to get gigs and all for his stand up comedy career that hopefully won't flop, and Eddie’s searching for assistant teaching jobs, and Beverly is working at really nice hair salon that pays well, and Mike is in Veterinary School. And she’s still with Tom; her friends are starting to catch on, if they hadn’t before. A few more years down the line, Richie gets a big break (okay not that big, but it's a break nonetheless), and somehow becomes extremely popular among the teens after his tweet about his cute but angry chihuahua like boyfriend. Eddie has been an assistant teacher for a couple years now and getting ready to become just a regular teacher; and Mike’s out of Veterinary School, and Bev’s opening up her own salon after a two year business program at a community college. She’s still dating Tom.
Until she’s not. At 26, Beverly has had enough. After nearly seven or eight years of something she grew up enough with because of her father, she gains the courage to finally stand up again to her another abusive man in her life. The other three finally knew the entire truth and with their help and pep talks and comforting words and hugs, Beverly stands up for herself. She dumps Tom. A fight ensues. She acquired a few new bruises and he expects her still in their shared apartment when he comes home from work. But when he’s gone, through tears and cries, she packs up everything. Literally everything. And then she’s getting in the crappy Honda she’s had since her first year in college with all of her belongings and driving to Richie’s and Eddie’s house just a little bit away. They aren't there, though. Richie is on a mini tour for a month and to because it was the summer and to celebrate the fact someone hired him as an actual teacher for the upcoming school year, Eddie tagged along.
Beverly doesn’t trust men, and the full reason why hits her like a train as she sits in her best friend’s and his boyfriend’s home, alone and honestly a bit scared. It makes her sad thinking over how much she loves and trusts three guys with her life, but two harmful men and the disgusting, predatory looks from other men out weighs her best friends’ good intentions. As she sits there, suitcases haphazardly pushed into the living room and body sore, she wonders if she should go to the doctor. It’s only a few bruises and a busted lip, though. Eddie, if he knew, would be fussing over her and dragging her out of the house in an instant to get her checked on from worry – the opposite of what his mother did constantly to him as a child.
The redhead chuckles at the thought of the Kaspbrak fretting over her, but then a few tears are leaving her eyes and suddenly she’s crying again, and wanting to call one of her boys, but she can’t. She doesn’t want to. Not yet, anyway. Richie’s having too much fun, Eddie’s enjoying his break, Mike is already working, having a good time while doing so. They didn’t need to worry over her while they’re living their lives to the fullest.
A bark interrupts her thought process and she blinks, confused for a split second until she remembers Sid. A black lab with too much energy for her own good, just a little over a year old. Richie and Eddie had gotten Sid when she was four months old. They almost didn’t get her all because they weren't sure how often they'd get to spend with the puppy. Both are home more often than they thought, though still both of their jobs restrain them from spending the amount of time they want with the puppy - less often than they first thought, though. Thankfully, both Mike and Bev are available more often than not, Bev the most. They help take care of Sid when the couple can’t, which honestly isn't that much, and the adorable dog has somehow formed into everyone’s pet over time with how often they're all at the Tozier-Kaspbrak house.
Bev wipes under her eyes and cheeks, wincing at her palm pushes into the bruise on her cheek too hard, and makes her way through the house to the back door. She peers outside to the fenced backyard and sees Sid near the back, tail up and ears perked; on high alert. The dog probably heard something she didn't like, or maybe saw a squirrel. Beverly opens the door after she unlocks it, and one hand rests on the door frame.
“Sid!” She shouts to get the dogs attention. “C’mere, girl!” Sid yaps and runs to Beverly instantly, and the woman’s laughing a bit as she crouches down, the dog attacking her with licks. Beverly pets the dog in return and moves to sit on her butt. “Hey, girl. You missed me, huh? I was just here yesterday, though, before your dads left. You miss them, too? Hm, I bet. I do. Yeah, I do, and they miss you, no doubt about it. C’mon, hey- oof, let me stand up, girl. Sid- Okay, thank you. Hey, can you sit? I’ll give you treat! Good girl, let me take a picture.”
Beverly snaps a picture of Sid, the black lab’s tongue hanging out the side of her mouth as she pants, floppy ears forward and dark eyes wide. She quickly sends the picture to Eddie, paired with a text of heart and dog emojis and ‘she misses u!’. She then ushers Sid inside, brows furrowing when she thinks she sees the dog limping, but it was hard to tell. She quickly finds the dog treats in the kitchen pantry, and feeds Sid one right as she gets a reply from her friend.
[from: coffee buddy 11:49 am MNFK SHES SO CUTESJDK I MISS HER TOO GIVE HER LOVE SOME LOVE FOR US]
[to: coffee buddy 11:50 am i'll be sure to give her all the love dw ur pretty lil head]
[from: dipshit 11:52 am SID!!!!!!! THE CUTEST!!!!!!!!!! THANK U FOR UR SERVICE BEV]
[to: dipshit 11:52 am mwah ur welcome rich x]
She smiles at their reactions. It's cute and something she's seen a thousand times throughout the year they've had Sid. One time, she had watched and listened to Richie gush over Sid sleeping with her head in Eddie's lap, his boyfriend drifting off to sleep as well. Unfortunately, that memory ends with Tom calling her and demanding her home for the night, cutting the friends' fun night together short.
Beverly finds herself frowning at the memory and doesn't bother to keep track of Sid as she wanders throughout the house. The young woman stays in the kitchen, her mood coming back down. She brushes stands of her long hair out of her face, her features scrunching up in disgust. She hates it long. Hates the way it gets the way and how she always has to do something with it, always having to get tangles out at the ends. Tom loves her long hair though, and after some persuasion back in college, Beverly grew it out again and kept it at the same mid-back length. Her stomach churns with the realization her father liked her hair long, too. It was the reason she chopped it all off in the first place. Self-hate settles in her, and she can feel the tears coming back as she leans against the counter when her phone starts ringing again. She jumps. The irrational part of her brain is telling her that the caller is Tom, that he somehow found out that she left home while at work, and he's coming over to drag her back. The other part - the rational part - knows that can't be it.
With shaky hands, she pulls her phone back out. Relief floods through her at seeing the familiar number of one of her clients. She sighs and presses the green dot on the screen before putting it on speaker. It was Audra Phillips, a wonderful woman around her age that started coming to Beverly's own salon the moment it opened, always complimenting Bev's work and saying how the redhead should be a renowned stylist for hair, makeup and clothes. "Hi, Audra," she greets, hoping her voice doesn't give off the fact that she had been close to crying.
"Beverly, hi!" Audra greets, happy. If she can tell something is up, she doesn't say anything. "I was just wondering if we're still on for one today? It's just- I'm busy these next couple days and there's a court case Friday, and I really don't want to look like shit. The split ends are bad. And it's my first one, y'know?"
"Of course, yeah," Beverly does her best to sound up beat. "I was actually just about to leave to get everything ready." It's a lie, but the other woman doesn't need to know that. Until Audra called, Beverly's mind had completely pushed away her one o'clock appointment, too engrossed into the early morning fight with Tom and her leaving without his knowledge.
"Wonderful! You are a life saver, Marsh, I fucking love you."
A genuine smile reaches her lips. "It's truly no problem, Audra. I'll see you at one."
They hang up, and Beverly goes to the bathroom after fishing her makeup bag from one of her suitcases. She stares at herself, taken back by the appearance. The bruise on her cheek is worse than she thought, and she had dried blood she didn't know about on her chin from the cut on her lip. Her striking blue eyes are bloodshot and rimmed red from crying on and off throughout the morning, and her bright red hair was a bird's nest. She is a complete and utter mess, and she has no idea how to make it seem like she isn't. But she does her best for the next ten minutes; she covers up the bruise with ease, and does her make up to where the only indication of her crying are the bloodshot eyes. She tames her hair to the best of her ability and just throws it into a ponytail. She keeps what she's already wearing on - a tee from Disney World that she got a some years back when she and her three friends were all free of school - with light skinny jeans and converse. Then, she puts Sid back outside in the backyard, grabs her keys, makes sure the doors are all locks and that the lights are off, and finally leaves.
+++
"-and I've always wanted to start a fashion line. Or do something with fashion, and make up too, which is why I started that- that...what's the word? Oh, well, that thing where people can make appointments for getting their makeup and hair done for dates, or prom, or whatever - oh, a bundle! The two in one. Gosh, I'm the owner and can't even fucking remember these things correctly," Beverly says, wincing as she remembers that she's talking to a customer. "Sorry for my language."
Audra chuckles from where she sits directly in front of Beverly, the woman behind her snipping away at her now wet hair. "You know I don't care about your language, Bev, keep on with it. And don't down talk yourself, sweetie, everyone forgets things."
They meet eyes in the mirror and share a smile. Audra has been at the salon for some time now. Beverly washed the other woman's hair before actually starting to cut it, per Audra's request. During that time they had conversed about a million and one things, leaving one conversation to go to another only to jump back to a topic that had long since been forgotten when one of them remembered something else. It was nice, Beverly had to admit. It was getting her mind off of that morning.
"Would you add fashion if you could? To the bundle - making a three in one deal."
Beverly's brows knit together as she thinks about it. Then, "Most likely. I think it would be hard to do, though. I don't think fashion is one of my strong suits, and... I dunno, the makeup deal probably won't last too much longer and I doubt the fashion thing would, either."
Audra snorts with a roll of her eyes. "You are one of the most talented women I know with all of this," she tells Beverly, hands moving under the cape. "I've never been disappointed once, and the make up you do for the prom and special events are fucking fantastic! Your fashion sense is off the charts when you dress up; hell, even when you dress down. You have the potential to do all three, Bev. What's holding you back?" The question is quieter, filled with so much care; and her other words are full of sincerity. It has Beverly faltering her movements.
She licks her lips. She knows what's holding her back. "Tom," she says simply as she quickly goes back to doing Audra's hair, and she hopes it doesn't sound as bitter and fearful as it felt. "He's always been supportive of this - of the hair salon - but he's always...apprehensive about the makeup. And then about the fashion, he's just so against it."
"What do men know?" Audra asks. "And what does Tom even do?"
"He works at some small business. A financial analysis."
"He's just jealous. Scared, maybe, of you turning out better than him. God, men are so...ugh."
"There are a few decent ones out there," Beverly says, thinking of her friends. A large smile tugs at her lips. "My best friends. Richie's annoying as all fuck, but he's genuinely caring when he wants to be. Usually to his boyfriend, and me. We grew up together, so we're basically siblings. Then there's Eddie - Richie's boyfriend. A damn firecracker. A bit crazy. A mother hen, at times. Oh, and Mike! He's probably the most genuine, nice guy I know. He's over six feet, and Rich calls him a gentle giant. I'd call him the perfect guy, but he loves pranks, and he and Rich get into a prank war three times a year and they drag Eddie and me into them too. They're not perfect - not by a long shot - but they're the most decent guys I know. I doubt there's any 'perfect guy'."
Audra's quiet for a moment. "I'm surprised you didn't put Tom in there."
Beverly's jaw clenches for a moment. "Why would I put my ex in a list of good men?" She says in a casual way and hopes that it doesn't cause dramatic reactions from those around her. It does. Her regulars and few employees know of her and Tom. It was clear no one likes him, and Bev knows that maybe they figured out something had been wrong about the relationship, but she always painted Tom as a good guy to others despite the bruises littering her skin and his harsh words towards her even in public. Audra's jaw drops and Beverly stops snipping the hair and moved her arms to her sides just in time as Audra turned around, and she sets the scissors on a flat surface. A gasp is heard across the building, and Bev turns her head to see her good friend and employee, Kay McCall, standing a few chairs away, getting ready for another customer.
"Did he dump you?" Audra asks, almost sounding hesitant to do so.
Beverly looked back at her, and then at Kay who is walking over at the speed of lightning. "I... Actually, I dumped him," she says slowly. "This morning." It almost feels wrong telling the girls first instead of her best friends first, but there's a sense of relief that comes with telling someone and Bev figures that the boys won't mind.
Kay squeals and pulls Beverly into a tight hug. "Oh, my god, I thought you'd never get rid of that ass!" She pauses and pulls away, keeping her hands on her friend's shoulders. A serious yet excited expression sits on her face. "I know it's no surprise I don't like him, okay, I'm sorry. I know you loved him too but, babe, that boy was a total whack job! He gave me the fucking creeps!"
Audra is nodding along. "I wanted to say something, but we're not that close, y'know? And I didn't wanna piss you off accidentally."
"I honestly thought you were gonna end up marrying him. It was, like, my worst fear the longest time," Kay admits. Her hands finally leave Beverly's shoulders.
"Mine too." Beverly takes in their looks, and she wants to take the words back but it's too late. She doesn't want to tell them what he's done, it's too early and too fresh to tell someone out right, so she doesn't. "I stopped loving him, is all," she lies. But, it's not really a lie. "I felt obligated to stay in the relationship, I guess. Probably a bit scared, too, because we've been together since the end of my second year of college. I finally just ripped off the band-aid this morning."
Audra smiles softly. "Long ones are the hardest to end."
Kay nods in agreement. "Yeah. Hey, I've got a pullout at my apartment if you need a place to stay. I know you two were living together."
Beverly shakes her head. "Thanks, but I'm good for now. Rich and Eddie are out of the city for a month, and I'm already visiting there to dog sit. Might as well house sit, too. I'll call if I decide to take you up on that offer, though."
They share a few more words - not much at all, though - and soon Beverly is back to Audra's hair, and Kay is walking up front where a new customer is stepping in. She licks lips, feeling how chapped they are, and her nose scrunches the slightest bit as her tongue went over the cut. She had forgotten about it, and at remembering it she is grateful that neither Audra nor Kay asked about it. She doesn't know what she would have come up with if they did.

The rest of the day consisted of Beverly having a few more customers, going to the grocery store because she knows for a fact that Richie and Eddie have zero food at their house, walking around fearful, and finally getting to the Tozier-Kaspbrak residence with the sun completely gone because apparently shopping and driving takes a lot longer than she realizes. She keeps the doors locked and lets Sid roam around as she puts up the groceries - she was right, they had no food - and later feeds Sid, noticing that the limp she thought she saw that morning is, in fact, a limp and it looked the slightest bit worse. After dinner, and after letting Sid outside for a few minutes to use the bathroom, Beverly's phone starts to ring and ring, and ping continuously, messages and missed calls from Tom keeping the device occupied. She waits, but the messages and calls come in nearly every second. Every minute. She wants to call someone - Mike, Richie, Kay, Eddie, anyone but Tom - but she can't pick up the phone, because that means looking at her messages. She knows it's not going to happen, but that doesn't stop her from feeling as if even if she touched the phone Tom would find out where she is like some telepathic demon from Hell.
It's not until she's hearing her own wheezing when it dawns on her that she's having a panic attack over the stupid fucking calls and text messages, curling in on herself against one of the kitchen walls, cheeks wet and make up smudged because of her tears. She hasn't had one in years, not since her first year in college, which is a surprise in and of itself given who she's been dating. Her mind struggles to grasp at what to do - its been eight years - but once she remembers, Beverly does her best to do it. It takes time, much longer than she would like to admit, but she soon calms down. Her hands stop shaking, and her cheeks are starting to dry, and her phone is silent too. Sid is laying a few feet away, staring. Worried. Beverly sniffles. Shakily, she stands and the young dog moves her head up in a flash, eyes trained on Beverly as the young woman moves across the kitchen. Sid then quickly gets up and limps to where she's right beside Bev.
Her eyes squeeze shut as she unlocks her phone to avoid looking at the missed calls and unread texts, and it makes her want to throw up as she does it but she blocks Tom's number, erases the messages and makes the missed calls notifications go away.
Then, she's going to bed in the guest room, exhausted. Sid is at her feet in the bed when she's supposed to be in her bog bed and kennel, but Beverly doesn't care. Rich and Eddie don't have to know, anyway. She's too relaxed. She feels too safe with Sid there. So, she lets Sid stay there, eventually falling asleep.

It's halfway through the morning when Beverly notices Sid is heavily favoring her right front leg as she plays without a care in the world in the backyard. It concerns her, worries her, so she calls the nearest vet and places an appointment at two - and coincidentally, it's the one Mike works at. She doesn't call her two best friends yet, not wanting to worry them in case nothing is wrong. She doesn't go into work. She doesn't want to, simply put, so she doesn't. She's the owner, anyway, and goes in whenever she pleases; the fact that she had no one specifically ask for her on that day was another reason Bev doesn't go in, and she knows the employees can handle themselves. She takes a nice, warm, long shower and brings Sid inside around noon. Then she has lunch, and as the time for Sid's appointment rolls closer, she changes into Nike shorts and the same t-shirt she wore the day before, uncaring of who saw her in it yesterday. She's still emotionally drained from the night before, so it surprises her that she didn't walk out in sweats and a hole-y shirt.
The drive to the vet is fine. Sid stays in the backseat, constantly moving into different positions and standing to look between the front seats, even though her front leg is probably hurting her. Upon reaching the vet clinic, the hope of seeing Mike rises, and she gets out with Sid quickly, locking her car, and then goes inside. It’s not long at all until she’s sitting in one of the back rooms waiting for someone to come in and check on Sid. Not too soon later, the door is opening and she’s hoping it’s Mike, but it’s not. She tries not to look too disappointed, though it wasn’t hard at all given as the guy who walks in is attractive.
She blinks, taking in the dirty blond hair and soft brown eyes; he’s tall, too – about Richie’s or Mike’s height – and at first Beverly, admittedly, tensed up. Here’s a guy who she doesn’t know and therefore doesn’t trust, and her first thought is that he’s going to say something her. To try and flirt. To seem as if he’s this perfect dude trying to win Bev over for a hookup. But then he’s giving her a warm smile before crouching down to Sid who’s jumping in excited at seeing a new person, and she suddenly feels bad for jumping to conclusions.
“Hey,” the guy laughs as Sid licks his face. “You’re a friendly one, aren’t you? Who’ve we got here today?” He’s then looking at Bev and standing up.
Beverly twists the leash in her hands. “That’s Sid. Um, she has a bad limp, and I just got worried.”
He nods and looks back down to the dog, who’s now laying on the floor at his feet, panting as she stares up at him. “Yeah, I noticed it when I walked in. It’s pretty significant. If you don’t mind, I’ll take her to weigh her out there. We’ll be right back.”
“Yeah, yeah. That’s fine, do what you gotta do,” she says. “I’ve never been to a vet before. Sid’s not mine, she’s my friend’s. I’m just dog sitting while he and his boyfriend are outta town. I figured I should bring her myself in case something is actually seriously wrong.”
He smiles as he slips the vet’s leash on Sid with ease, and unclasps the other off of her collar. “That's nice of you to do.”
“I'd do anything for my friends.” Beverly sets the leash in her lap, giving a tiny smile. “She pulls a lot, by the way. Just a warning,” she tells the man.
He nods. “It’s fine. Be back in a jiff,” he tells her and then he’s out of the room with Sid, the dog excitedly walking and pulling. Beverly chuckles and leans back in the chair, blue eyes looking at the framed picture on the wall. It’s an illustration of different types of dogs and their names and where they originally came from.
She’s about to stand up to get a better look when the guy and Sid come back in. He walks the dog to her and lets her reattach the leash before removing the vet’s leash. “How much does she weigh?” Bev asks, curious, frowning at how Sid is favoring her leg.
“Thirty pounds,” he says.
“That’s good, right?”
He nods. “Yes, it is. Female labs usually get up to between twenty-five and thirty-two.”
Bev smiles and pets Sid. “Well, you’re a healthy girl, huh? Other than your leg.” She looks up at the guy, and he’s already looking at her with an expression she can’t read. Its similar to the one Richie gives her once in a while when he’s in a particularly loving mood towards everyone; but there’s something about this guy’s expression that’s so different from it at the same time. There’s no lust, no want, no desire. Almost admiration, if she has to label it. It’s a look she’s not used to, to say the least, and she has to look away and back down to Sid. “So, are you going to check her out, or is there some big shot vet doc that has to come in?” She asks. “Dr. Doolittle, maybe?”
He seems to jolt back into reality at the question, and if Bev were to look up she would see his cheeks reddening. “Huh- oh, yeah. I’m just- just an intern here, trying to get my foot in the door before I finally become a veterinarian myself. No Dr. Doolittle, though.”
Beverly chuckles and looks up. “Shame. I’d pay some real money to have Dr. Doolittle here.”
He smiles, still blushing a little. “I’d pay to be Dr. Doolittle.” Then, “I’ll go get the ‘big shot vet doc’.” He uses air quotes as he uses the words Beverly had said moments before, chuckling lightly as she rolls her eyes with no malice behind the action.
“Alright. Oh- hey, uh,” she hesitates, “I’m Beverly Marsh, by the way. I should’ve introduced myself sooner. Sorry.”
He shakes his head. “Don’t worry about it. I’m Ben Hanscom. I’ll be right back with the doctor, Beverly.”
As he leaves, she can’t help but feel a bit embarrassed about just introducing herself like that so abruptly, but she pushes the feeling away. A few minutes later, the guy – Ben, and she can’t help but think how well the name suits him – walks in with the doctor. They check on Sid, have her walk around for a few seconds, and then the doctor is explaining that nothing seems wrong.
“There isn’t any swelling or cuts or broken bones, so it’s probably just a bad sprain. Nothing too bad, thankfully, but you’ll have to restrict how much she plays for it to get better. I’ll prescribe her some pain medication that you’ll give her once a day for seven days. If it’s not better by this day next week, I suggest bringing her back. It’ll most likely require surgery if that’s the case.”
Beverly nods along to the words and takes the information in, planning on calling Richie once she leaves to explain everything to him. After that, both the doctor and Ben are leaving again, Ben coming back five minutes later with a small, blue pill bottle.
“Give her one forth of these everyday, and it should help,” Ben tells her as he hands the bottle to her. “I hope she gets better. She’s such a sweetheart.”
Beverly stands and holds the pill bottle with one hand, and Sid’s leash with the other. “Me too. Thank you, by the way.”
He sheepishly smiles and shrugs. “I barely did a thing. It’s all the doctor.”
She chuckles. “Well, thank her too for me. Hey, do you know a Mike Hanlon?”
He nods quickly. “Yeah, he’s another intern for one of the other doctors here.”
“Is he here?”
“Yeah. But he’s helping with a surgery on a sick cat. Why?”
She shrugs. “He’s one of my friends. I was expecting to see him, is all.”
“Sorry to disappoint.”
Beverly frowns but then smiles, shaking her head as she gets ready to leave. “You’re not a disappointment, Ben. You seem like a cool guy, and it was nice meeting you.”
He’s then giving her another warm smile, and he’s blushing again. “Thanks. It was nice to meet you, too. And Sid, of course.”
Beverly then says a bye with a smile of her own and she walks out of the back room, and to the front. She pays, not minding having to, and walks out with her phone pressed to ear as she calls Richie, explaining what’s wrong and what’s happening with Sid as she drives home. She doesn’t mention the breakup or Ben just yet. She doesn’t want to think about either too much, and telling her best friend about both would require just that. So, she doesn’t. Richie doesn’t ask, either, because one: he avoids the topic of Tom as well because it just puts him in a pissy mood for the rest of the day and he can’t be in a pissy mood during a gig, and two: Beverly have no indication about the guy who helped out at the vet clinic being attractive in any way.
She sighs as she falls into the couch after giving Sid the correct amount of medicine, turning on the TV, pushing any thoughts about men out of her mind as she watches a rerun of an old 90s show.
