Concept design for Nova Hawkins in an alternate universe on my friends, @dani-luminae , fic, Stars On Earth, that we talk about at times.

The youngest child of Sarah Hawkins and younger half-sister of Jim Hawkins, Nova was born some time after her older brother mysteriously disappeared and despite having never met him, Nova already has a good idea of what her brother was like...since in all the stories she's heard about him from her mother, Nova's always found herself being compared to him, for both better and worse. Because despite her mother's attempts to keep Nova on the right path, Nova would ultimately end up on the same one her brother had been at her age: trouble, with Nova ultimately getting a list of arrests going for all the trouble she was getting into, the last one being for going into restricted areas with a home-made solar surfer. Panicked about losing Nova completely to the same thing she ultimately lost Jim too, Sarah would ground Nova until further notice, but this wouldn't stop Nova from sneaking out and by pure accident, coming across a fight between pirates from the Pleiadean Fleet, the very same fleet her brother once commanded. And despite the fact that she didn't mean to get involved in the fight...well, what else was she supposed to do when one side recognized her as definitely a Hawkins, an enemy of some of the fleet now somehow, and went after her? Though thankfully, she would end up being saved by the other side of the pirate fight led by a pirate with a cyborg arm named Silver and a lioness named Kate, both former members of Jim's crew as the chief and second in command respectfully. And after the attacking side fled and Nova was fully introduced to Silver and Kate and their crew, Nova would ultimately learn what happened to her brother at least...but much to her disappointment, they don't know where he ended up still, something they still trying to rectify, which catches Nova's interest and causes her to ultimately want to go with them so she can find this brother of hers already. And despite her mother's initial objections at first, words from Silver, the very same man that had gotten her brother off the same destructive path Nova is currently on, convinces her mother to let Nova go with the pirates and Nova is able to finally travel the stars in search of her brother.

To answer the question of how fast Earth spins, you need to know two things: how long it takes to make a full rotation, and Earth’s circumference. The time it takes Earth to rotate so the sun appears in the same position in the sky, known as a solar day, is 24 hours. However, the time it takes Earth to complete one full rotation on its axis with respect to distant stars is actually 23 hours 56 minutes 4.091 seconds, known as a sidereal day.

With this information, to work out how fast Earth is spinning we need only our planet’s circumference. At the equator, its circumference is roughly 40,075 kilometres, so dividing this by the length of day means that, at the equator, Earth spins at about 1670 kilometres per hour.

However, this speed of rotation isn’t consistent across the planet. As you move north or south, the circumference of Earth gets smaller, so the speed of spin reduces until it reaches its slowest at both poles. And all of this is nothing compared with the 107,000 kilometres per hour at which Earth orbits the sun.

If we are travelling so fast through space, why can’t we feel it?

Simply put, as Earth is spinning at a constant speed, so does everything on it. Travelling at the same speed means we cannot feel the spin. It is like driving a car. Even though you are moving, you aren’t aware of speed because it is constant. Only when you change speeds do you notice you are travelling, like putting your foot on the accelerator or making an emergency stop.

A change in speed has been happening here on Earth, but it is far too slow to notice. Millions of years ago, one Earth day was about 22 hours, and Earth’s speed has been dropping for more than a billion years, with days increasing by around 2 milliseconds every century.

This slow down is caused by friction created by the ocean currents, tides and wind pulling on Earth’s surface. However, global warming may speed things up again. As sea levels rise, this change in mass could result in Earth spinning faster and reducing the length of each day by 0.12 milliseconds, which would have dramatic effects on the calibration of atomic clocks and GPS systems.

What if Earth were to stop spinning?

Without a huge external force, this is impossible. But, if Earth were to stop spinning, the atmosphere would continue to spin at the speed of Earth’s rotation, so anything not fixed to the surface, including trees and buildings, would be swept away by the strong winds.

Each side of the planet would get six months of continuous sunlight and six months of darkness.

Without the centrifugal force of the spin, the oceans would gradually move towards the poles, creating a huge supercontinent across the equator. But we wouldn’t be flung off Earth. Gravity and the centrifugal force of Earth’s spin keep us grounded. In order for us to feel weightless, the centrifugal force would need to be ramped up. At the equator, Earth would need to spin at 28,437 kilometres per hour for us to be lifted off into space.

Concept designs for Reese Hawkins (formerly Heidi Tombs) in an alternate universe on my friends, @dani-luminae , fic, Stars On Earth, that we talk about at times.

The adopted daughter of Jim Hawkins and adopted younger sister of Lia, Reese doesn't like discussing her biological father, Hades, since he never really bothered to parent her, only giving her attention if it was to remind her how much of a failure she was being to him...though she guesses she must acknowledge his lack of attention is why she ended up in a family that does care about her, since she only really knew Jim and Lia from running into them in the market a-lot as Reese got curious about Jim's inventions if he had them on him, but then one day, Jim saw Reese walking around with a broken leg gained from trying to retrieve something from a high place after Mad Maddy threw it up there, and after learning her father didn't even care then, he ultimately decided enough was enough and Reese didn't return home that day, going to Jim's and Lia's instead and whatever Jim did to scare Hades ensured Reese and Hades never had an encounter that point onwards. Loyal to her sister and an inventor like her father, Reese longs to leave the Isle one day like her family and see space...but much to disagreements with the two sister's father, also shares her sister's hopes in seeing the world beyond the Isle at least once, but despite it seeming hopeless after six months of nothing since the king's coronation and the Isle getting worser, Lia and Reese are surprised to find one day on the Isle, the king himself - and Lia and Reese decide to try and keep him safe. This decision sets off an adventure that will change their lives.

i’ve always made my distaste for that relationship clear.

but your response specifically highlights one of the things i dislike the most, not only about the relationship but about Chapels characterization in snw.

i can see that the dynamic is well written enough to be enjoyable for a lot of people. but (attempting to set aside my clear bias for spirk) i can never get past how it disregards existing canon, like spock (seemingly) not knowing her first name in tos, or calling her feelings “illogical fantasies” in tmp, and how it confuses later plot lines, like her long lost fiancé (of course their relationship in snw isn’t the only thing that causes those problems, there is no lack of continuity errors in the star trek universe but i know a lot of people don’t care as much as i do so i won’t go further into it)

they completely changed her personality, made her more ‘girl boss’ for lack of a better term, but with this being a prequel, and her being nothing like that in tos, it kinda makes it seem like someone broke her spirit at some point.

if she’s so cool and badass in snw for then why is she so different in tos. she’s rarely seen in tense situations, usually just taking orders and flirting with Spock. this establishes that she’s hung onto these feelings for years, and throughout tos she always makes her feelings clear, even though he shows no interest and even clear distaste at times, this makes her seem pathetic at best (and kinda creepy imo).

and i don’t think that was the intention in tos, at least i don’t want to see it that way. without previous background given by snw she seems usually calm and kind of snarky at times, she has a crush on Spock that she’s clearly forward about but not in a creepy way. but with the context from snw, them having a previous relationship and her being so much cooler than she is in tos, it makes it seem like one breakup ruined her entire personality and now she’s doomed to a life of creepily pining over a man who doesn’t want her anymore.
