Recent evolutionary adaptations to the environment in human populations, from Going global by adapting local: A review of recent human adaptation (Fan et al., 2016). The icons show the type of adaptation recorded in various parts of the world, and the acronyms besides (e.g. EDAR1) are the names of the involved genes. Also see Genome-wide detection and characterization of positive selection in human populations (Sabeti et al., 2009), Population Genomics of Human Adaptation (Lachance & Tishkoff, 2013).
Some examples are:
Lactase persistence in Europe, Near East, and East Africa, allowing the digestion of milk in adult age (by default, the lactase required to digest milk sugar would only be produced by infants; this was just a matter of removing a timed switch).
Similarly, greater production of amylase, which breaks down starch, is reported in Europe and Japan (diet based on farmed grains) and among the Hadza of Tanzania (diet based on starchy tubers).
Improved conversion of saturated into unsaturated fatty acids in the Arctic Inuit peoples. This makes it easier to live on a diet of fish and marine mammals in an environment where plant food is scarce.
Smaller stature ("defined as an average height of <150 cm in adult males") in the "pygmy" peoples (Aka and Mbuti) of Central Africa, and other hunter-gatherer peoples in equatorial Asia and South America. This helps shed heat in a hot humid climate where sweat does not evaporate.
More efficient fat synthesis in the Samoa, helping with energy storage at the price of more risk of obesity or diabetes with a richer modern diet.
Improved resistence to malaria, sleeping sickness (trypanosome), and Lassa fever in Subsaharan Africa. Fighting off against parasites is especially difficult (since unlike the inorganic environment, parasites also evolve), so this resistence often comes at a cost, such as anhemia, but is still a great advantage on net. Some improved resistence to arsenic poisoning is noted in an Argentinian population.
Denser red blood cells on the Andean, Ethiopian, and Tibetan highlands, to carry more oxygen which is scarcer at high altitude. I recall from elsewhere that this might increase the risk of thrombosis or strokes due to obstructed blood vessels.
Less melanin (which blocks UV light) and therefore lighter skin color in Eurasia. Melanin shields skin cells from damage due to UV radiations, but some UV light is necessary for the synthesis of vitamin D.
A change in the gene EDAR1, resulting in denser head hair, slightly different tooth shape, and fewer sweat glands (all skin annexes), appears strongly selected for in East Asia, but as far as I can find the advantage of this mutation is still unknown.
From another article (Ilardo et al., 2018): the Sama Bajau people of Indonesia, who have a long tradition of free-diving in apnea, seem to have developed larger spleen to store more oxygenated blood during dives.

Why are Caffeine & Energy Stimulants So Common? {or How to Stop Being Stuck in Cycles of Fatigue, Brain Fog, and Insatiable Hunger/Cravings for Sweets}
Relying on energy stimulants (coffee, energy drinks, caffeinated tea, protein supplements/bars/snacks/shakes, candies, chocolates, etc) to get through a day or workout is a sign that your cells are lacking energy. Don't let your cells suffer like that 😥 (these stimulants also hamper nutrient absorption and harm organ tissue). Fuel yourself with fruit*.
Every cell in the body generates energy from simple sugars. It's most efficient to consume fruit for energy - they are nutrient dense, fast digesting, and packed with simple sugars. When we don't, that's when the depleted feelings and/or sugar-y or starch-y cravings set in. The body tries to get accessible sugar in some way. High-fat and high-protein require a lot of energy to create a good amount of cellular energy. Intuitive eating protocols neglect to realize that cravings for high-carb foods & sweets is the body's message for more energy (preferable via fruit).
••••••••• 🍓🥝🥭🍇🍉🍐🍊 ••••••••••
Tumblr media
Ripe** fruit is the best option especially for breakfast & snacks. Have it in abundance***. Cells quickly convert them to useable energy. And they don't cause the withdrawals, sudden energy drops, or harm to your organs that stimulants do. Those who eat adequate amounts of fruit do not consider these stimulants (as shown above).
For the best energy: eat until thoroughly satisfied & don't mix fruit meals with anything but fruit (especially if you have digestive issues, but also because it slows the digestion process & time until the cells receive the glucose molecules for cellular respiration/ATP production)
Some Recommendations: smoothies/smoothie bowl, homemade popsicles, dates, baked fruit (like baked apples or pears sprinkled with cinnamon + nutmeg), frozen or fresh grapes, melons, raisins, berries, cold-pressed fruit juice, dried figs, applesauce, or whatever your current seasonal favorite is**** (luscious persimmons, pomegranates, and oranges in winter; mangoes, pineapples, and papayas in spring; watermelons, peaches, and blueberries in summer; figs, grapes, and apples in fall)
---
*if you are on prescription medication, check first if there are any fruit that are contraindicated. Choose other options. There are thousands of fruit in the world to choose from.
**this channel has a lot of good guidance for selecting properly ripe & tasty fruit (she overviews a bunch at once - from apples to mangoes to tomatoes to dragonfruit - in this video)
***if you have blood sugar issues, a lower fat whole food plant based diet can resolve those issues long term. I recommend working with an experienced & trusted health practitioner to be sure you safely make the adjustment. I definitely recommend it because fruits are the cell's best & most nutritious fuel and it doesn't serve the body to restrict them.
****seasonal fruit may vary depending on location. seasonal fruit tend to have the best flavor profiles & price points

Ex-Designer Project Bar in Barcelona
via e-flux
Martí Guixé’s Ex-Designer Project Bar, an exceptional project that turns a digitally designed interior, produced entirely using full-size 3D printing techniques into a standalone object, will be on display at the Disseny Hub Barcelona (DHub) from May 23 to August 25.
The project was born in November 2015, when Martí Guixé, one of Barcelona’s most internationally influential 21st century designers, set out to design and 3D-print, independently and without help, all the components of a bar on Barcelona’s C/ Entença in collaboration with architect Pau Badia. The bar, an empty commercial unit with minimal structure, was gradually redesigned and built over a period of almost five years, using three on-site printers while still in operation. Thus, all the bar’s components were gradually printed: everything from the tiles on the walls and the furniture down to the smallest utensils, such as glasses of different types, plates and cutlery.
According to Martí Guixé, the process itself is what matters, so the project became something performative, incorporating coincidence in a natural way.
The use of the establishment as a bar—where concerts, presentations, talks and other events were also held—was just as important as its role as a laboratory for experimenting on the possibilities of additive printing, and the utopia of digital autonomy. The project explores the true potential of digital fabrication technologies to achieve the dream of self-sufficiency for local production, without having to rely on large global manufacturing systems.
Just as the bar was finished, with the grand opening scheduled for February 2020, the pandemic and subsequent lockdown forced it to close. It then underwent a process of “deconstruction”, which was carried out behind closed doors and in an orderly manner, like a work of archaeology, in order to preserve it in full. The Ex-Designer Project Bar thus ceased to be a bar or a work of interior design to become a standalone “object” adapted for other possible uses.
Martí Guixé’s Ex-Designer Bar is a reflection on the potential for democratising industrial production and the industrial process: “The use of 3D technology makes artisans redundant and unifies materials. The world is made up of ideas, not of people’s energy”. He also said that “bringing the Ex-Designer Bar to a museum turns it into an object, a ruin and an archaeological site of the future”.
The first full-size reconstruction of the bar With Ex-Designer Project Bar, the DHub is exhibiting this monumental object in its original format, after assembling the walls and other various components: A total of 30 wooden panels measuring 122 cm x 150 cm, plus over six thousand 14 cm x 14 cm tiles. The result is an installation that measures 8.75 x 3.56 m and is 5.02 m high, whose component parts have been 3D-printed in full size using polylactic acid (PLA), a biodegradable polymer made from 100% renewable resources, such as corn or plant starch.
The interior walls include the front of the bar, which features figurative motifs from other projects by Martí Guixé, the side bars with experiments with bas-reliefs and pseudo-geometric figures in various sizes and thicknesses, and unsuccessful attempts to create a series of bag and coat hooks. There is also a notice board with backlit tiles for posting information about events and food and drink prices, as well as a front panel in which the main figure represents Artificial Intelligence, a representation of all the 3D printers used, including the one for printing food.

Excerpt from this story from the Chicago Tribune:
Reid Thompson, a fourth-generation farmer in central Illinois, is in the middle of planting season. Weather permitting, he tends to the fields in the morning, walks home for lunch with his wife and newborn, and then returns to his tractor until sundown. He’ll harvest his corn in early fall, sell it to a nearby ethanol plant, and eventually it will make its way to a car’s gas tank. That’s the routine, at least for now.
Nearly all U.S. gasoline contains ethanol to reduce emissions, and nearly all of that ethanol is made from corn starch. But, electric and hybrid vehicles offer even further emissions reductions. This poses a threat to corn demand that could be devastating for a state such as Illinois, the second-largest corn producer in the country.
The resulting decline in the value of Midwestern farmland and corn prices will hurt farmers and have ripple effects across rural communities, predict University of Nebraska at Lincoln agricultural economists Jeffrey Stokes and Jim Jansen. Rural businesses that cater to the agriculture sector could go under, property taxes that fund local schools will likely plummet and farmers could be forced to default on debts to community lenders, the economists forecast. This would come after farmers have been hit by a series of misfortunes over the last five years: the pandemic, trade wars, inflation and excess supply.
Corn could be the key to solving another clean energy dilemma, though. Unlike cars and trucks, planes are difficult to electrify, and some fuel companies believe the answer to cleaning up aviation lies in America’s heartland.
“(Corn is) the cheapest, most sustainable, most scalable feedstock (raw material),” said Patrick Gruber, CEO of Gevo, one of the companies with plans to turn corn ethanol into aviation fuel.
Thompson and other corn farmers are eager to seize this opportunity in sustainable aviation fuel, another term for jet fuel made without fossil fuels.
But, before corn ethanol-to-jet fuel can be a viable alternative to conventional jet fuel, the emissions associated with corn ethanol production must come down. This will require farmers to change their practices on the field and ethanol plants to implement controversial technologies like carbon sequestration.
Since 2005, the federal government has required transportation fuels to be blended with increasing amounts of renewable fuels such as corn ethanol to reduce air pollution, greenhouse gas emissions and dependence on foreign oil. The mandate transformed rural economies across the Midwest. Between 2008 and 2016, corn prices rose by 30%, and 26% more land was converted to cropland than would have been otherwise, according to a 2022 study published by the National Academy of Sciences.
Ethanol plants quickly sprang up around corn fields, due largely to investments from farmers eager for the new market to succeed.
The Biden administration established a “Grand Challenge” to produce 3 billion gallons of sustainable aviation fuel — defined as jet fuel with 50% less emissions than conventional jet fuel — annually by 2030. The ultimate goal is to make enough of this fuel to meet all national demand — estimated to be 35 billion gallons — by 2050.
Airlines are on board. United and Delta have both signed advance purchase agreements with numerous aspiring sustainable aviation fuel producers. Currently, however, sustainable fuel only accounts for 0.1% of the jet fuel used by major U.S. airlines, according to the latest federal government data.
The challenge is that creating sustainable aviation fuel costs three to five times more than conventional jet fuel and securing biomasses at scale is challenging. Most of the 24.5 million gallons produced last year were created with discarded cooking oil and animal fat, which are available in limited quantities.

yall she's still around. the time between "oh hey, i can do this in a lab" and "i can do this in an industrial capacity and at a cost that's reasonable and with the variety of structural properties people want out of common plastics" is a long one, and not all things you can do in a lab are particularly easy to scale up.
In particular nopales are... not particularly known for being a "produces tons of biomass very rapidly and harvest in bulk with machinery" kind of plant. And the plastic here, according to the news articles, composts within 2-3 days when submerged in water. which is awesome, but it also means it's not ideal for holding your moist pb&j or being the wrap over a chicken breast or w/e.
Here's an excerpt from a 2023 opinion/survey piece from Dr. Sandra Pascoe Ortiz (the lady in this bbc video) and i wanna draw your attention to the fact that she is NOT saying "i have solved plastic with my nopales, and I need protection from big oil hitmen" she's saying "collectively we've made a lot of progress on this, but it's a complicated problem and there's a lot of issues we still need to solve with the science, industrial engineering, economics, politics, and social awareness"
... [some] Bioplastics may come from biological material but are chemically the same as petroleum-derived plastic, the only thing that changes is the source from which they are obtained; for example, with Bio-polyethylene terephthalate (Bio-PET), the "Bio" only indicates that its origin is vegetable. This compound is neither biodegradable nor compostable, it is considered a bioplastic only because of its origin. The environmental benefit of this type of material is that, because it comes from a plant, a certain amount of carbon dioxide is captured during the production of its raw material (during the life of those plants). In general terms, the production process of bioplastics compared to petroleum-derived plastics has less of an environmental impact in terms of the balance of greenhouse gas emissions.
It is also important to note that the fact that a bioplastic is biodegradable or compostable does not mean that it can be thrown anywhere and will just disappear. Most biodegradable or compostable bioplastic waste requires processing under controlled conditions to be incorporated back into nature: they must be composted at industrial level. For example, polylactic acid (PLA) takes 80 years in the open air to biodegrade or, if composted industrially, takes days or a few months depending on the conditions of the process.
The market for both biodegradable and non-biodegradable bioplastics is growing and these materials have been gaining ground over petroleum-based plastics (although not enough). The main biodegradable bioplastics on the market are polybutylene adipate terephthalate (PBAT), PLA, starch blends, polybutylene succinate (PBS), cellulose films and polyhydroxyalcanoates (PHAs). According to data from European Bioplastic in cooperation with the Nova-Institute from 2021, the most common applications of these materials are in flexible and rigid packaging, consumer goods, textile fibers and in agriculture, and it is projected that by 2026 the production of biodegradable bioplastics will be considerably higher than that of non-biodegradable bioplastics.
Bioplastics have several drawbacks. Some the raw materials they use are often also used for food, there is not enough production and their costs are higher than those of conventional plastics. It is often the consumer who has to absorb the price difference and is not in a position to do so, adding another reason why, so far, they have not been able to significantly displace petroleum-based plastics. Bioplastics and biodegradable plastics are part of the solution to the problem of plastic pollution, as they generally have reduced environmental impacts in their production processes and, in some cases, because it is feasible to treat their waste, but they are not the only and absolute solution; the problem of plastic pollution is more complex and is still far from being completely solved. For these materials to reach their full potential, it will be essential to have regulations to regulate their production, certifications in terms of biodegradability and proper education for buyers to choose products that help in the conservation of the environment.
Finally, it should be remembered that pollution is mainly generated by the misuse of materials and poor disposal of their waste. The real problem is the abuse of plastic materials, whether they are biodegradable or not, since they are mainly used in containers, packaging and single-use products, and most of the time they are discarded not because they are useless or their useful life has ended, but because of the convenience of using and throwing away. Certain quantities of plastics can be recycled; however, when they are mixed with other types of waste they become contaminated and when different types of plastic are not adequately separated, this recycling becomes practically impossible. Nevertheless, the recycling of some bioplastics has not yet been trialed, not because it cannot be done, but because of the small quantities of these materials compared to conventional plastics, which makes it practically unaffordable. So, instead of blaming plastic materials for existing environmental pollution, we need to look closely at how we use resources and dispose of waste. No matter how many bioplastics or "environmentally friendly" materials there are, if we do not reduce the production of these types of materials and consequently their waste, there will be no real solutions. We need to be aware of what we consume, support initiatives that promote environmental care and demand the commitment of governments to legislate and enforce laws, as well as encouraging businesses to change their materials and production proceses.
Like, not to put too fine a point on it, but if your response every time you see a news article about some tech and it doesn't immediately fundamentally transform society is "must have been suppressed by the elites and their killsquads", you WILL end up drinking the conspiracy kool-aid. And I also think it's disrespectful to scientists like Pascoe Ortiz to imagine that the science is fundamentally easy, instead of something that takes years of dedication and hard work and many false-starts and dead ends! If you're impressed by her work then,.. put some respect on her and her colleagues work!

Wheat Starch Prices Trend | Pricing | News | Database | Chart
Tumblr media
The Wheat Starch market has garnered significant attention in recent years due to its widespread applications across various industries, including food, paper, textile, and pharmaceuticals. The demand for wheat starch is largely driven by its functional properties, such as thickening, gelling, and stabilizing, which make it an essential ingredient in numerous products. However, the pricing dynamics of wheat starch are influenced by multiple factors, including raw material costs, supply chain challenges, and market demand. Wheat starch prices have shown considerable fluctuations over the past decade, reflecting the intricate balance of global agricultural production, trade policies, and economic conditions.
One of the primary factors affecting wheat starch prices is the cost of wheat, the core raw material. Wheat prices are highly sensitive to climatic conditions, geopolitical tensions, and global supply-demand imbalances. When wheat prices rise due to poor harvests or increased demand, the production cost of wheat starch also escalates. Conversely, a bumper wheat crop can lead to a decline in wheat starch prices. Additionally, the advent of bioethanol production has intensified competition for wheat as a raw material, thereby exerting further pressure on prices. This competition underscores the interconnectedness of the agricultural and industrial sectors and their impact on pricing.
Get Real time Prices for Wheat Starch: https://www.chemanalyst.com/Pricing-data/wheat-starch-1539
Global trade policies and import-export regulations also play a pivotal role in shaping wheat starch prices. Countries that rely heavily on imports to meet their wheat starch demand are particularly vulnerable to tariff changes and trade restrictions. For instance, any disruptions in wheat exports from major producers, such as Russia, the United States, or the European Union, can significantly impact the availability and cost of wheat starch in importing nations. Moreover, the imposition of sanctions or trade barriers can exacerbate supply shortages, causing prices to spike. In contrast, favorable trade agreements and tariff reductions can help stabilize the market and make wheat starch more affordable.
Energy costs are another critical determinant of wheat starch prices. The production of wheat starch is energy-intensive, requiring substantial amounts of electricity and water. Fluctuations in energy prices, driven by changes in crude oil markets or shifts in renewable energy adoption, directly affect manufacturing costs. During periods of high energy prices, producers often pass on the increased costs to consumers, leading to higher wheat starch prices. On the other hand, advancements in energy-efficient technologies and sustainable production practices have the potential to mitigate cost pressures and stabilize prices over the long term.
Shifts in consumer preferences and technological advancements also shape the wheat starch market and its pricing trends. The growing demand for clean-label and plant-based products has led manufacturers to explore innovative applications of wheat starch in food products. This rising interest has increased the value perception of wheat starch, allowing producers to command premium prices. Similarly, advancements in extraction and processing technologies have enabled manufacturers to produce high-quality wheat starch with enhanced functionality, catering to specialized industrial requirements. These innovations contribute to a more differentiated market where pricing varies based on quality and application.
The regional dynamics of wheat starch prices further illustrate the complexity of this market. In regions with abundant wheat production, such as North America and Europe, wheat starch prices are generally more stable due to the consistent availability of raw materials. In contrast, regions that depend on imports, like parts of Asia and Africa, experience greater price volatility. The rapid industrialization and urbanization in emerging economies have also fueled the demand for wheat starch, creating a competitive market landscape.
