teldrassil was never even real, and yet i mourn. it was my home for thousands of years. i grew up there. my friends and family were there. i learned magic there. i met the love of my life there. i had a child there. and, yes, i can technically go back at any time. it hasn’t been removed from the game or anything. but i will never look out from the branches and see the fuzzy, faded shape of kalimdor to the southeast again. i will never walk the streets of darnassus again, nor dolanaar, nor starbreeze village, nor shadowglen, nor rut’theran, nor even darkshore. all that i held dear in that life was destroyed, save for the dream, and even that was tainted by the absence of my son.

Part 18 of my World of Warcraft paladin playthrough! In this episode I begin questing in the Night Elf starter zone - Shadowglen. After several quests I then move out to Dolanaar and do quests around Starbreeze Village. Apologies for the sound of hammering throughout the episode, next door neighbours decided to have their house rewired and a bathroom installed without notifying us.

I’m reading the dragonlance chronicles and the amount that wow took from the series is crazyyy. One of my fav references I’ve learned about is an elven character named Alhana Starbreeze- I’m guessing she was the inspiration for Starbreeze Village and maybe even “children of the stars/kaldorei” since her father is called the Speaker of the Stars, the leader of their particular group of elves. But there’s so much more wow literally ripped off including the cataclysm and dragonflights.

World of Warcraft
Trespassers
Raelethari woke to the sound of a gentle but insistent knocking at her door, and a soft voice calling from outside. “Captain Ravensong? I’m sorry to disturb you, Captain, but you are needed in the war room.” Lieutenant Fairbreeze had been Raelethari’s senior Sentinel since her appointment to Lieutenant during the War of Thorns and had been a loyal friend since their training together as Sentinels, many years prior. Rae groaned softly as she sat up in bed, her sheets bundling around her waist as she cradled her head in her hands, rubbing the sleep from her eyes. The knock returned a few moments later, a bit more insistently this time. “Captain?”
Raelethari nodded, as if Selaria could see her before finally speaking up in a coarse tone. “Yes, I heard you Sel… I’ll be there in a moment.” Selaria’s voice returned a moment later. “Captain, the Commander was most insistent that you come at once.” Rae sighed again and nodded. “Yes, alright, Sel. I’ll be right there.” Finally the Lieutenant seemed to relent, and Raelethari pushed herself to her feet, making her way to her bathroom on the opposite side of the barracks room, taking only a few moments to wash her face and hopefully wake up a bit before hurrying to her armor stand and pulling on the scale, leather and plate armor she’d worn since the burning. It had done her well, keeping her safe from harm throughout the war, a welcome change of pace from her old Sentinel garb, which hung on the wall nearby. The Captain stopped only to kiss the portrait of her husband and daughter before sliding her circlet onto her head, and heading out the door, slinging her quiver and bow as she acknowledged Selaria with a nod of her head, following her Lieutenant down the carved wooden ramp into the Cadre barracks offices.
“What’s all this about, Selaria?” She asked as she glanced out the window…. It was mid afternoon from the sun, which meant this had to be at least mildly urgent, to rouse a Cadre Captain in a time of supposed peace. “We’ve received a report, Captain. Of a Sin’dorei attack on Starbreeze.” Raelethari blinked and looked over at the Lieutenant. “Come again, Lieutenant? A Sin’dorei attack?” The Lieutenant nodded quickly as she ushered Rae into the war room, where Commander Moonfury was waiting. Commander Halladris Moonfury had taken command during the war, much to Rae’s relief… She was familiar with Halladris. Fierce, aggressive and wanted justice for Teldrassil just as much as any Sentinel did.
“Commander.” Raelethari greeted with a nod of her head, to which Halladris motioned to the map table. “Captain Ravensong… You are familiar with Winterspring, correct?” Rae nodded as she smoothed some of the chaos out of her hair, eyeing the map that had been shifted to reflect the region of Winterspring, a trio of red clay circles emblazoned with the Horde insignia surrounding Starfall village. “That is correct, Commander. Is this accurate? An unprovoked attack following a peace agreement on a civilian settlement?” Halladris snorted and glanced across the table at Raelethari. “Is it truly so difficult to imagine, Captain?” Raelethari glanced down at the map again, staring at Starfall village, the place where she called home in her personal time. A spark of anger caught in her heart and began to grow into a flame as her eyes darted back up to Halladris. “No.” She replied coldly.
The Commander nodded. “We had hoped their days of war crimes were behind them. It seems that is not the case, Ravensong. The little lion of Stormwind’s weakness has come back to bite us, yet again, it would seem. We received a message from Captain Springvale about half an hour ago indicating her Sentinels had come under attack by an force of Sin’dorei, Troll and Orcish warriors, they could not account for the entire force and estimate enemy strength to be somewhere between fifty to one hundred.” Raelethari raised a brow, surprised by such a large force. “Any messages since?” Raelethari asked as she jotted down the Commander’s words on a small leather-bound notepad… a gift from her husband. She eyed the picture on the inside cover for a moment and quickly glanced back up to the map and the Commander. “None since, Captain. You are to take your Cadre to Starfall immediately, in force. Apprise the situation, send a message back here and engage the enemy, provided they are still present. If they are not present, you are to pursue and eliminate, is that clear?” Raelethari nodded. “Clear, Commander… Quarter for any who surrender?” Commander Moonfury shook her head slowly, locking her gaze with Raelethari’s own to drive home the severity of the situation. “The High Priestess is not interested in prisoners, Captain. Give no quarter, leave no trace.” Raelethari shifted faintly and glanced once to Lieutenant Fairbreeze, who was eagerly jotting down notes of her own. The Captain glanced back up to Commander Moonfury and nodded once. “If that will be all, Commander, we will depart as soon as my Cadre musters.” Halladris nodded in reply. “Good. Do not take long, Captain, we have not heard from Captain Springvale, therefore are assuming the worst.” Raelethari nodded and turned on her heel as she headed out of the war room swiftly, turning to Selaria for a moment. “Lieutenant sound assembly, rouse the Cadre and be ready to move in ten.” Lieutenant Fairbreeze nodded quickly and broke off from Raelethari, heading for the Sentinels’ barracks, ringing the assembly bell outside the main doors.
Raelethari reached the saber stables just in time to spot the first of her Sentinels hurrying from the barracks, pulling on her breastplate and circlet as she came, running for the stables. Rae swung herself up onto Shalla’min’s saddle and hurried the Stormsaber from her pen, out onto the assembly grounds to jot a few last minute notes in her notepad and wait for the rest of her Sentinels to muster. She watched them eagerly as they filed into the stables, bows and glaives in hand, each as ready as the next to spill Horde blood. They didn’t know the situation, but they would soon. They would know the stakes… and the rules. Raelethari narrowed her gaze as she looked down at her Captain’s map, spying the shape of Starfall village on the map. “You could have left when the Little Lion asked nicely… Now you have it our way.” She growled to herself as she reached to her belt and blew her Captain’s horn, urging her Sentinels to hurry. Felwood to Starfall wasn’t exactly far, but it was far enough to allow the cowards to open the gap and make themselves more problematic to locate. But so deep in Kaldorei territory? There would be no escape for the filth… Not tonight.

The Fire
(Warning, Long read ahead. If you do not like reading about war and the death that occurs as a result of the War of Thorns, do not read.)
A day before the invasion:
Darkshore, a place of battle. The War of Thorns many came to call this already. Was it truly a war? Faeril as she fought throughout the days passing determined it couldn’t be a war. This was a massacre. Genocide even of her people, the Horde pushed forward, pushed into her homeland. Her people’s land. What had the Kaldorei done to provoke this? She heard many ask Elune and Malorne this, though nature weeped just as much to the destruction the Horde army left in its path. The southern border was lost, the scouts broke through, small pockets of the enemy found a way in.
Was there hope in this symphony of death and decay? Faeril could not see it, there was no light this day. Mother Moon did not shine with guidance for the Kaldorei. The forests were pitch black as the night, Faeril trudged through them alone, for she’d been seperated from her militia women, from her hippogryph. Knocked from the sky, she’d landed in leaves. The forest saving her for now; only to send her back toward death itself. Death rode upon pale horses...the forsaken crawling everywhere in the night. For the enemy needed no food, no water, no sleep. The Dark Rangers and their pets could hunt to their delights. For all others had to fight or perish in their times of rest should they be found.
The night was long, it took her hours in the dark of night to reorient where she was. The elder woman in full combat attire. Her hair stained red and black from the blood of the forsaken and Horde warriors she’d encountered. No rest for the wicked she’d been told, she too must become wicked. ‘I cannot sleep, I cannot stop I must find the line...must...find my....’
Horde....Faeril saw them like a blight upon this land. They’d found a way over the mountains. No one stood a chance. Kalimdor was lost to the savages....
The Horde:
“SISTERS! BEHIND YOU! LOOK BEHIND YOU!” Faeril screamed, breaking her cover as she burst into a sprint. She had to catch up, she had to warn them. As other soldiers had been picked off she couldn’t let the Horde sneak up on her people!
But alas, they already knew. Many had somber looks about them, accepting the fate of the Darnassian armies. So few in number with no aid, no true back up. The main part of the Grand Alliance army would not make it. They could not make it. Not in full force, sure others had come, others found ways here. But it was simply not enough.
The Alliance was too far away to stop this.
“Hippogryph riders! Make for Lor’danel, make for Teldrassil! Take everyone you can and get them to ships, find portals. ANYTHING. Riders! Back. WE MUST MOVE THE LINE BACK TO LOR’DANEL. FOR KALIMDOR, FOR TELDRASSIL!” The resounding warcry of “FOR TELDRASSIL!” could be heard amongst the fighters. Many leapt for nearby hippogryphs, sabers, horses. Anything that could make it back north with haste.
Lor’danel hadn’t been given warning, there was no time. Faeril had managed to relocate her beloved hippogryph in the chaos. Hundreds of soldiers mobilized in any way, on foot, upon their mounts, some transformed and ran alongside nature. Everything knew to run. Run from the Horde, run from the killers.
Run away from death.
But alas as they arrived...the Horde had beaten many of the remants there. Catapults fired from the shore...Teldrassil was burning. Lor’danel was burning, the forest was dying with fires engulfing them. The last time any destruction of this magnitude had happened was due to Neltharion. the dragon that nearly broke the world. Fire raged, Faeril recalled Hyjal burning, how nature begged for help. The cries of death and fury consuming many around her.
The day continued, plumes of smoke seen miles away built up. Faeril knew many innocents were in Darnassus, but what of Dolanaar? Shadowglen? Starbreeze Village, The Oracle Glade? Innocents inhabited all parts of the tree. Knowing this Faeril urged Alor’el toward the burning World Tree. Toward death. the pair would risk their lives to find the civilians, find the saber cubs, the owls, saplings, worgen, anything living that had no chance of survival. If it could be picked up it would be. Airlift after airlift came for anyone in sight. Faeril found ships in the ocean, she found her people fleeing and brought those she took to whatever ship she could put them on. The navy had only the chance to take those Sentinels and their hippogryphs could find. Portals had been used in Darnassus, other key areas to save the people. But even those in the ranks of ‘saving’ eventually fell or had to stop thanks to the smoke. They too would die if they continued. Everyone knew, everyone saw not all lives could be saved...in fact....so much would be lost. For the brave few willing to take the risk...to be dropped off on the beach to run. Run north the people said, toward the mountains. Make for Moonglade, surely the circle would protect life? Protect their own kind? Would the Tauren kill the refugees on sight?
When Faeril and Alor’el were unable to continue their airlifts they went north, to a part of Darkshore they didn’t see the Horde armies. They both collapsed on the beach...staring at Teldrassil, at the navy, and at the Horde war machines in the distance. Their lungs full of what once was, smoke, and death.
Faeril howled into the night. She pressed her face into the hot sand and wept. Untold pain shattered the elderly woman’s frame. She could hear the cries of her people in the canyons as they ran, as they fled. If something found her now she’d die knowing she did all she could. Let an orc run a blade through her. Add to this awful death toll.
She howled for the Goddess. Where was the protection for her people? Where was ANYONE when an army this size moved on the Kaldorei? Her rage couldn’t be contained, it couldn’t be quelched. She threw her fists in the sand as a child in a fit might. But as she did so seated on her knees she...fell over onto her side. The Horde had no reason to do this. They had no reason! Now they could move on what little the Kaldorei had left....to snuff them out. Would her people not exist by tomorrow? Could the Alliance find the refugees along the trees? So many questions all blurred by her and Alor’el’s rage.
The hippogryph cried and screamed. So many of its kind fell alongside it today. As the tide came in so did the bodies. Kaldorei that hadn’t made it...their companion mounts, pets, visitors of the city that also hadn’t made it. Ambassadors, worgen.
But Faeril felt a thump as something hit her backside from the wave. A warglaive...a Sentinel Warglaive. She rolled over to reach for it, the tears welling back up in her eyes. “Ana’duna Thera....” Revenge. She will get revenge. Faeril Stood, lifting the glaive into the sky. The tree still burning in the horizon. She’d howl “ANA’DUNA THERA!”
Then everything went black. She couldn’t fight to stay awake any longer. Unconcious in the sands. Bodies pilling up around her as the tides brought in their death.
The death of her people.

“So Burns the Crown”
The burning of Teldrassil as it happens in my canon.
Fragments of Azeroth - [AO3]
-
It happened like an airship falling from the sky, like she were frozen in time, caught up in a molasses of paralysing dread.
Azshara impaled her azerite javelins into the base of the world tree and raised her upper arms to the swirling skies. The air bit at Keleria's skin, raising hairs and stinging her nose. She watched helplessly as lightning raced down to Azshara, streaming through the dread Queen and into the javelins as a crackling column of fury that drowned out all other light.
White hot explosions burst along the tree's surface at the point of impact, surging upwards in plumes of fire and shattered bark. Unnatural flames gorged on the wounds left behind, chewing at Teldrassil's dense and fortified flesh as if the wood were from a tree one might have found in the mundanity of Elwynn Forest. The blessings of Ysera and Alexstrasza meant nothing to such fire.
Explosions surged up Teldrassil's side, raining pulp and flaming chunks into the ocean, and Azshara's terrible laughter carried all the way to Lor'danel.
"The time of the Kaldorei is at an end! Embrace oblivion!"
Her legs wouldn't move. Keleria clutched her blade tightly, hands shaking, aware she should be moving but completely incapable. She couldn't take her eyes off the tree, this last refuge of her people--this was it. They had lost everything, every last part of their sacred lands.
The shores of Lor'danel erupted with the cacophonous hissing and roars of naga forces, newly arrived. They were being squeezed from both sides and still, Keleria couldn't look away.
The next explosion was massive. It ripped through the great boughs cradling the easternmost stretch, shattering the land and launching the fiery remains of Starbreeze village into the sea. It fell in great pieces, tumbling and breaking apart. Fire and smoke rose from the wound with greater and greater ferocity.
Another bout of laughter, sneering, victorious. Azshara urged the lightning along and explosions rocked throughout the bulk of the tree, spreading fire to the rest of it.
A great wind swept across the sea and knocked Keleria down. She lifted her head at a flash of silver light. It looked like a piece of the shining moon cut through the sky and collided with Azshara's eyes. She fell back as if struck by a warhammer, twisting away from the blow. Blood and scales sprayed from the naga Queen's countenance in a long arc and she shrieked in rage, disappearing beneath the waves.
There was silence as the water settled, as Teldrassil blazed and the wind began to carry ash and embers across the strait, the heat that followed was stifling, and Keleria swallowed thickly.
The cries of naga and faceless alike forced her to her feet, the fighting renewed, and she could barely feel the sword in her hands.
The horn of retreat cut the air and Keleria blinked, staring in its direction. Shandris and Tyrande were holding an opening to the southern stretch of beach where Ancients where most concentrated. Refugees and wounded Sentinels were fleeing through it.
Finally, she moved, racing through the town and blowing on her hippogryph whistle. She forced Etharadar to hang back in case she needed him, no matter how ferocious he could be in battle. She needed his mobility more than his beak or talons.
Reaching the beach, she turned briefly to observe the battle still raging and saw Sal'rasi and Asharii ablaze with their powers over fel and blood. They were a green and red beacon, drawing attention away from those unable to survive it. Many more were able to flee safely thanks to them.
Wings brushed over her head and Keleria turned, running to catch up with Etharadar and hop on before he lost momentum. She urged him into the sky again and banked hard, towards Teldrassil--towards Darnassus.

Zarachiel
The Paladin rests on a bench in Silvermoon’s bustling Bazaar district. His armor gleams, the deep cobalt blue accentuated by the thick golden mass of braids resting over his right shoulder. The pile of braids partially obscure the raised scar on his right cheek that marrs his otherwise handsome, broad face. He scans the energized crowds, the successful merchants stand in their colorful silks with fine cloth overhead, shading their wares in their portable wooden stalls. They hawk their wares, their vigorous, but polite shouts encouraged by the frequent exchange of gold occurring in nearly every stand.
His gaze traces along, similar scenes playing out over the expansive space with polite bows here, and red-faced apologies offered there. His eyes stop on a large, heavily-armored retinue forcing their way through the crowds, a few shout in dismay, but are swiftly silenced when one of the guards steps away and backhands a crier with an armored hand.
Taatje watches impassively until he notes a banner being held aloft by one of the crimson-armored guards. He sits up, a scowl deepening on his face as he notes the black eagle. ‘Blood knights. Quite typical of that dreadful lot,’ he rumbles to himself, no one around to hear the edge on his voice.
The formation surrounding a scarcely-visible figure marches forward in lockstep, their armor rhythmically clattering along. They continue pushing their way through the crowds on the meandering circular path that snakes through the entirety of the Bazaar. They eventually pass a dozen yards from Taatje’s position, only one with a hawk-face glances briefly at him. The burly Paladin holds his eyes with a faint scowl until the neat, well-disciplined rows of the formation draw even and he catches a glance in passing at the surrounded figure.
Zarachiel, The name pounds in his head like a gong while the scar on his face flares up painfully. His eyes remain locked on the center of the formation as he slowly stands, catching only scant glimpses at the Blood Elf’s black hair. The sounds of the busy market have faded entirely. All other thoughts gone except for the memory of his branding at Zarachiel’s hands.
He still smells the sickly-sweet burning flesh as he begins to trail the formation from a distance. The Paladin’s hands tremble slightly at his sides until he clenches them, the armor of his gauntlet’s groaning softly under the pressure.
The retinue is easy to follow, large tower shields hang suspended from the guards’ back, covering most of the entourage except for their shining crimson greaves visible below. From behind, it appears a monolithic ebony mass plowing; the visible crimson of their greaves seems bloodied in the light as if the crowds were trampled instead of shunted aside. He continues stalking behind, patient, yet tempted as the lion creeping on the hawk. The large retinue stops in precise unison outside a large ornate building; one of many that ring the outside of the bazaar. A few of the otherwise stone-still guards move aside as Zarchiel steps through and ascends the flight of stairs leading into ‘Sunbeam’s Wine & Spirits.’
The broad Paladin meanders to a nearby curiosities stall when he sees the retinue stop. He languidly strolls up to the wiry merchant swathed in an orange and red billowing gown. ‘Just stopping a moment,’ Taatje rumbles softly as he begins surveying the arrayed miscellaneous wares. The tremble is still in his hands as he feigns interest, but without truly seeing the items. He raises them and tucks them under each arm as he attempts to keep an eye on the retinue from his peripheral.
Taatje’s thundering heart marks anxious time while he waits and is soon rewarded with Zarachiel’s hated figure descending the stairs and rejoining his cloistered retinue. The figures depart, much as they came as the Paladin strides from the stand; the relieved merchant visibly relaxes at the strangely-behaving male’s calm exit.
He ducks into a gloomy alley and accidently sends a bottle clattering down the passage. A vagrant sits up shakily, obviously hungover and immediately draws a knife. The thickly muscled Paladin casually boots the would-be thief in the face mid-stride and lays him out flat on the ground as if he were reaching with both arms towards the far end. Taatje eventually reaches the opposite end of the alley and stops, hearing shouted orders and dull thuds. He leans, just enough to peek around the corner as a squat, hirsute manager shouts at a few wiry laborers working quickly to fill a wagon.
‘Faster! This should have been done sooner you loafers! For what am I paying you? Get it done!’ The little red-faced man goes to turn, but then stops and turns back with a soft click of his well-heeled shoes. ‘You oafs do know where to take these, right?’ The little man rolls his eyes and huffs. ‘It’s the largest manor outside “Starbreeze Village.” Though I should guess even you two can botch a simple delivery for one of our most important clients. Go!’
He turns and stomps back through the service entrance, his paunch visibly jiggling through his suit. Taatje turns on his heel and strides past the still-unconscious vagrant and back out into the bazaar. His hands have resumed their tremble and his heart beats as loudly as thunder.
Spotting his shop in the distance, he slowly approaches it, the blood draining from his face by the minute. Mortal terror and black fury rage in his chest as his plan begins to form. The little silver bells tinkle coldly in his thick mane of swaying braids as he ascends the stairs and heads for his office.
He must die, the Paladin thinks to himself as he seats himself at his desk and begins scratching out shakily-written instructions for his associates in case he fails to return. He turns, the form complete with the ink still drying on his large desk and peers into the fire for a long spell. His heart continues thundering along in fear, the fire having long cooled to mere ashes without his notice. Or I will die trying.

Module Task: Critique #1
Video Game: Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons
Dying in a game is, to many, an inconvenience. A small roadblock that disturbs the pacing of the narrative experience. So too in many cases, that the death of a video game character warrants the same reaction - a common method of instilling drama in the story or invoking urgency from the player and little beyond that. It is a rare occurrence when game designers can successfully communicate the permanence of death, and even more miraculous when they can invoke empathy from the player.
Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons is an example of such a miracle. The 2013 game from Starbreeze Studios is deceiving at a first glance; its Scandinavian-inspired, hand-drawn visual style, and brightly-hued aesthetics akin it to a product of gaming's casual sector. However, the juxtaposed ‘PEGI 16’ rating on the innocuous cover art gives faint warning to the grimly mature themes of the title.
The narrative-driven, fantasy game follows two brothers as they venture from the comforts of their village and out into a vast and dangerous world to find the “Tree of life”, and collect a magical elixir that will save their ailing father from death. Between these two characters, neither of them stand out as a ‘lead’ protagonist but instead compliment one another as “deuteragonists” in their quest. However, the player may feel more drawn to the younger brother, “Naiee” as it is revealed in the opening cutscene that he suffers from a traumatic aquaphobia following his mother’s death at sea during a storm.
Starbreeze employs the use of mise-en-scene and character actions to convey the plot of Brothers. The conventional dialogue between the characters is forfeited for a fictitious in-world language, leaving the player to decipher the meaning of respective contexts through the facial expressions and paralinguistic communication of the protagonists. This subjectivity extends to the environment that surrounds the brothers; as the game makes use of a pull narrative, it’s up to the players to use their agency and attention to spatial storytelling if they want to make sense of certain scenarios.
But where Starbreeze’s feat in character storytelling and relationship lies is in its mechanics. Starbreeze merges the ludic and narrative elements from the beginning and especially so in its control scheme, where the connection between the brothers is principally relayed. Each half of the controller is devoted to a brother - The left stick controlling the older brother, ‘Naia’ and the right stick controlling Naiee with both having their respective context-sensitive shoulder buttons. As the player progresses through the game and becomes more fluent with the yin-yang puzzle-solving sequences, it becomes apparent that the developer's focalisation rests on building a relationship that the player can feel through the controller.
It’s these mechanics that make the conclusion of Brother’s all the more poignant. By the time Naia is killed just as the brothers reach the Tree of Life, the player has become so accustomed to the control scheme that his absence creates a jarring shift in the gameplay. For the first time, the player has control over only one character, and we gain an understanding of Naiee’s loss because we feel it ourselves. Our other half of the controller isn’t there, much like his other half isn’t there.
The perlocutionary effect of Starbreeze’s epic was to disguise the themes of companionship and death with the overtones of a mature fairy-tale. More so than that, Starbreeze delivered an interactive elegy that succeeds in its unique approach to developing an empathetic relationship to the characters and cements itself among the ranks of integrity in interactive fiction.
