I mean, GLaDOS was created by an act of (IIRC, nonconsensual, at best highly ethically dubious) human experimentation, and then had her head directly experimented on. So... yeah, pretty sure she’s exactly the sort of thing I’m talking about here.

She did some fucked-up things to someone who didn’t deserve it. I’m not saying she’s a cinnamon roll. But she’s not Evil Incarnate, either. She’s a broken person lashing out at things that remind her too much of when she was tortured. That’s not excusable but it is understandable.

@starboysisko re:  the accent post (responding this way instead of reblogging that whole thing) yeah, Marquet is challenging and I agree it’s easy to get swayed by the clear cultural influences of the place. That said the accent is kind of reminiscent but not an exact match of some Farsi speakers I’ve known?

This is also a case where things get really complicated because I'm in the US and work in a field in which many people are not originally from the US and also most people have graduate degrees. As a result I meet a decent number of people who were educated at least partially in a country that’s neither their native country nor the US, which means by the time I meet them I’m hearing an accent that’s something like “native speaker of Japanese, learned English from someone educated in Australia, did their PhD in Texas, now lives on the eastern coast of the US.”

i finally started watching star trek: deep space nine! assorted, mostly incoherent, thoughts on season one below ✨🚀💫👽✨

two minutes into the first episode of deep space nine: i have been seized with immediate love for commander dad sisko.

twelve minutes into the first episode of deep space nine: oh, jake. i'm in that weird position where i completely sympathise at his teenage plight because the face he pulls is Exactly the face i'd have made as a teenager having to bunk at some rundown, falling-apart place because of The Adults, but i’m also simultaneously like, c'mon, son. be nice to your dad.

keiko is a botanist???? and a mom?????? and i love her??????????

garkak’s “you don’t say?” routine at julian is PRICELESS, as is his “ooh doctor bashir ooh you’re not INTIMATING that i’m some sort of SPY, are you???” and the shoulder touching! it’s ridiculous. and i love it.

oh my god julian is so cute, he IMMEDIATELY rushes off to tell EVERYONE that he just had a lunch date with THE SPY!! he made CONTACT with me!!!! he’s UP to something!!!!!!!

sisko’s wild grin after odo says “she seems ... INTERESTED ... in me” is 100% me 

o’brien’s sarcastic, surprised little “well done, computer” is so relatable. you know he was just itching to add “you little shit” to that sentence. that’s exactly how i talk to my computer after it’s completed a basic, minor, elementary function. that’s just how you talk to computers

such a cute ep. i loved it to pieces. o’brien almost gets into a fistfight with a computer and adopts a dog. odo runs away from a romantic interlude and melts in a lift. julian makes the ambassadors of unhappiness happy. it’s all delightful

i cried through most of duet, what a fantastic episode. really well-written. nothing to say here, because i’m still crying. time for the season finale!

o’brien’s expressions are so funny his face after keiko tells him to be careful who he shares his jumja with is such a great mix of betrayed and offended >:’C 

the conflict thesis!! i was wondering if it’d come up! not subtle, but this is a nice set-up for it, especially with keiko’s school. i wonder if they’ll mention galileo?

“one must never look into the eyes of one’s own gods” / “i would do anything to look into their eyes” -- those are some Good Lines right there

i didn’t realise i was this ... pedantic? about fictional space healthcare because i don’t tend to care about details or even continuity that much, being a comics fan, but every time anyone touches literally any unknown substance, i have to tell myself that it’s the future and they must have invented a medical sanitiser -- a gel, a spray, something in the air, just some sort of invisible, off-screen, unnamed-because-it’s-so-obvious disinfecting... thing... that means that they don’t wear gloves or the like

galileo! i called it. now i want to make a star trek edit with that line from sarah williams’ the old astronomer

i really like sisko and kira’s relationship, how it vacillates from friends to foes one ep from the next due to their different positions, it’s very much a “working relationship” and it’s really nice to see the realities of how that, well, works, from day to day

i know i’ve said this before, but i’m so fond of odo. “apparently, he was getting murdered.” you tell it like it is, buddy!

this bajoran ensign around o’brien is Definitely Up To Something or she wouldn’t be getting this much screen-time

vedek bareil is a politician... but i’m nevertheless charmed by his offers of friendship to sisko for his political gain. and, also, all of his interactions with sisko. can i ship them?

i’m not really feeling sisko’s big speech. maybe it’s the quality of the writing there? but i think i prefer his intensity more in those one-on-one conversations, the small speeches, whether it’s with the the higher-ups or the lower-downs. i really liked how he talked to jake, about it being a matter of interpretation, and how the bajoran faith wasn’t something to scorn.

oh, god, there’s slow mo! at least the film score’s alright

still a great ep, though, especially ending with sisko and kira and their work-in-progress relationship -- which is, after all, a microcosm of the episode. i can’t wait for season two!!

(I got a third ask for 6, 12 & 13 too…It really tickles me that these are apparently either the questions y’all are curious about, or thoughtfully thought I would have the most fun answering, or both! :D)

12) Who is your favourite character to write for? Why?

Janeway, Georgiou, Tuvok.

The first two because they are my Absolute Favorite Characters, so naturally I love writing about them. I love the way their actors portrayed them, I love their characterization, and I find them personally #relatable while also being older and stronger and smarter and cooler than me, so it’s just a lot of fun getting to write my own fic interpreting them in various situations.

As for Tuvok…he’s also one of my favorite Trek characters, so I would expect to enjoy writing about him, but surprisingly, I find myself writing him and enjoying writing him more than I do other favorites like Chakotay or Seven or Harry. I read an interview a long time ago where a cis female writer described writing male characters as being like “stepping into a big, comfy overcoat,” and I think I feel something similar when I’m writing dialogue for a Vulcan character. 

I’m usually not one of the writers who has a “muse” that comes and goes, or who feels like “when I get in the zone, it’s like the characters are writing themselves!” I understand those concepts, but that’s not quite how I feel when I’m writing…usually. When I’m writing Tuvok’s dialogue, sometimes it almost feels like the words are just springing off the page once I step into his…Vulcan robes, I guess? Anyway, I love writing Tuvok-dialogue for that reason.

13) Who is your least favourite character to write for? Why?

The first thing to come to mind are characters I really dislike…but the thing is, if I hate someone I just never write them. One of the things I love most about fanfic is that I’m writing Literally Whatever I Want, and so when I sit down to write I’m the personification of the “lol bye” meme when it comes to characters I dislike or just don’t care much about. XD

So, having established that the only characters I really write for are characters I do like…the hardest character for me to write, far and away, is B’Elanna. It’s almost kind of funny, since not only do I love her as a character, I have some pretty significant things in common with her (engineer! often angry!), but she’s one of the characters I feel like I “get” the least on an intuitive level. I can write at least basic dialogue for characters I’m not remotely in sync with, like the EMH, more easily that I would be able to write a deep heart-and-soul level story about B’Elanna. And that’s okay. There are characters I can write, and there are people who do write B’Elanna brilliantly on that heart-and-soul level, and I really enjoy reading their fic, since it’s something I could never have predicted or generated myself! IDIC, right? :D
