Watching this show is like everything I could ever wish for in a plot about a character wanting to be left alone. He sees the main plot coming and he says “nuh uh.” An icon.

The Mandalorian is literally a story about a supporting character.

Here are main characters, Bo-Katan and Ahsoka, hunting down big bads like Gideon and Thrawn, and Din is like “that’s nice, I’m just trying to find a really good preschool for my child” AND THAT IS HILARIOUS I AM FROTHING AT THE MOUTH WANTING TO KNOW THE MAIN FUCKING STORYLINE AND DIN IS REFUSING TO ENGAGE. HE IS LEGIT LIKE “not fucking today, not my fucking division” AND DRIVES OFF IN HIS SHITTY HONDA CIVIC WITH HIS GREMLIN CHILD THAT HAS ANGER ISSUES.

Now that The Acolyte is over, is it worth watching?

I’m not really into Star Wats beyond the movies and, somewhat, the Mandalorian. I don’t want to watch episodes x-y of some other tv show in order to fully care about something, sorry.

But Manny Jacinto is gorgeous

I’m just disappointed. Rant below. Also, fair warning of Din Djarin biases below as he is my favorite Star Wats character and this most likely hinders my view on the show

I really don’t want to be disappointed! I swear I want Bo Katan to have a redemption arc, to see her thriving. I want her mistakes and her sister Satine’s mistakes to be turned anew and prosperous. I want her to be in a position to lead.

But we haven’t been given a valid reason that she should yet, same as Din when he was forced to accept the Darksaber despite not being able to wield it. Like Din, she doesn’t feel confident about leading people, and this should (bc we can’t guarantee anything in this stupid fandom) hinder her ability to wield it. Not to mention that we’ve hardly gotten much callbacks and grief to what caused this hesitancy. Just a vague, “oh yeah, I ruled, and then I didn’t, and then my people were destroyed and scattered.” Like that doesn’t affect every Mandalorian? Also, I have a feeling that many viewers are unaware of her backstory! I know why she wants this. Show us why she wants this. Make this meaningful.

However, I feel like everything we watched Din go through was for nothing. I mean, we already had to go through the quick reuniting of Din and Grogu, which only cheapened the impactful goodbye in the season 2 finale. However, we had to get over it because the Mandalorian could not continue without the pair as the whole story is build on them. (More on this in a minute). We had a whole episode dedicated (misplaced, yes, in TBOBF when it should’ve been about Boba) to his struggle with the blade and even going so far as standing up for his right to have it in front of Paz. Forgive me for being foolish as to think this was setting up his struggle yet eventual triumph and acceptance of the Darksaber, if not at least leadership of some kind. He is the titular character after all, and dammit, I’m rooting for him!!!!!

The main thing I’m disappointed about is Din and Grogu being side swept in their own show in favor of Bo Katan. Sure, this is probably karma for doing the same to Boba Fett’s show of which I will begrudgingly accept. I want to watch Din and Grogu build their relationship after being torn apart and reunited. And I know that’s exactly what causal audience members do too. I don’t want a whole season dedicated to a long, drawn out reason for them to get back to their familiar grind. Make it happen! Get creative! Use what you have already established! Bo Katan’s redemption should be secondary. In fact, I think it would have been a lot more impactful if it stayed that way, or better yet - give her her own spin off story like a Boba Fett. Fans would eat it up! But making her center stage in a story where there isn’t room to do so??? That’s just bad writing and planning. I’m sorry.

The Unwitting Mechanic

Rey, a disabled mechanic working in a chop shop, is given the wrong package she in turn sends to Takodana at the behest of a friend. When it turns out the identical package she received was actually intended for an underworld gangster, she is inadvertently drawn into a gang war between the crime syndicate and a croup of decommissioned Imperial troopers turned mercenaries. Knowing the magistrate and town she sent the package to are in grave danger, she stows away on a bounty hunter’s ship headed for Takodana, hoping she arrives in time to avert disaster.

The mix and match series was started just by swapping out clothes, faces, and accessories of different characters to see what new characters could be created or improved upon. There’s not always an intended story behind the choices— More often than not I just want to see what fit and looked cool.

The Whateverse

Four years into Star Wars streaming and it’s high time we discuss structure.

It’s clear today’s focus is on building the lore that bridges Return of the Jedi and The Force Awakens. But that wasn’t readily apparent early on. In 2019 they gifted us The Mandalorian, a series that started out as a Lone Wolf and Cub space western but quickly morphed into a jumping off point for New Republic world building.

We next saw Book of Boba Fett, which began as a story about Boba Fett’s life post-Sarlacc but quickly morphed into an sobfest Din and Grogu reunion, plus a peak into Luke Skywalker’s New Jedi Temple and (heck why not) a cameo of everyone’s favorite Clone Wars character, Ahsoka.

After turning back the clock with Empire Era series, Kenobi and Andor, we returned to the New Repunlic timeline with Mandalorian season 3 which featured even more world building. Din Djarin fans were left scratching their heads asking, “where’s the Din?”

Finally Ahsoka. A standout series in terms of overall production. Yet it still can’t help but give us a wee bit insight into the New Republic. Just a wee bit. To keep us posted.

I can’t help but notice this ADD-style storytelling. It reeks of poor structure. It’s getting to me. I understand canceling Rangers of the New Republic. What I don’t is inserting clearly obvious subplots from shelved Rangers episodes into a single character series.

Why not just make a single character adventure movie and a separate ongoing, wide scope New Republic series?

Lucasfilm bas not released a feature film since Rise of Skywalker. They blamed everything: disappointing numbers at the theaters, the pandemic, creative differences, the writer’s strike….

But they did give the keys to Dave Filoni. Thing is, Filoni’s strengths lie with world building rather than single character single adventure movies. This is where Lucasfilm has to come in. Pair him with writers who can write the efficient short story style script that a movie requires. Produce a movie that features a much loved character in an adventure that ties into the greater D+ series.

Imho it’s a win-win. Existing fans get movies with their favorite characters and the joy of watching an era grow before their very eyes. New fans get a jumping on point for a lore that once seemed too expansive for them to dip a toe into.

And here’s the thing: nine of this is new. Other franchises already do this. Just not Lucasfilm in the last four years.

Sad.

Bring structure back into Star Wats storytelling. There’s time.
